In Neuro Linguistic Programming we speak about the 4 stages of learning. Here they are if you're interested.
    1. Unconscious incompetence = I don't know I can't do 'X'(Trad, drive a car etc). Which means I'm unaware of specific activity that I cannot do.
    2. Conscious incompetence = I know I can't do 'X'. Simply means I know I cannot do a specific activity.
    3. Conscious competence = I know I can do 'X' because I've practiced and achieved the result/activity competently.
    4. Unconscious competence = I am no longer consciously doing the activity competently, I'm unconsciously doing the activity competently, and conscious awareness is placed once again in fovial attention. (Instinctive Trad)
I thought someone might be interested in this perspective so I'm sharing it.
Loved the video, Jeff!! Robert Carter said something in a video he did that I love and have adopted; Everything you do should have a positive influence on your shot.
I find you and Robert encompass that attitude!

I've been shooting traditional -primitive for 50 years and like you I shoot all the time. For me and my set up, my shots are all the same out to 25 yards, no problem. My problem with pure instinctive beyond 25 is if I look to the right and pick a target and I look to the left and pick a target at what I think is the exact same distance, let's say 30, I will shoot each the same with the same sight picture because that's what I think I see. The problem is if I put a range finder on each, one might be 27 and the other is 33. But due to terrain or trees or brush they look the same, so I end up shooting a little high or low. Longer distances are worse. Over a lifetime of shooting, I have developed a slit vision aiming method at long distance that has become very natural, but I really need to know the distance to be spot on. Apparently, you don't have those issues but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, and love your channel and recommend it to all.

Good evening, Jeff. Except for when I was a teenager, I've only been shooting a traditional bow, a longbow, for the past 2 years. So, thou I have taken deer each year, my experience is very limited. But thanks to you and others, I have finally come up with an arrow that I am shooting reasonably good. I think, lol. My arrow is an Easton Legacy 600, cut to 29.75, a 75gn brass insert, a 135 Simmons tree shark, weighing in at 457, pulling 36lbs. If you know of an issue that I might be overlooking, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts, if you've the time to answer. If not, no worries. Thanks for the videos.

I did a little bit of instinctive shooting, which felt really weird to me. I still aim with the tip of my arrow but when I got my hermit x10, I was trying to shoot it vertical but it wasn't working for me at all. I canted the bow and didn't look at my arrow and I was pulling off all my shots at 10, 15, 20, and 23 yards. I find it interesting to make a successful shot without staring at the arrow, but I still rely on it at this point for preference. I'd love to switch to instinctive.

    • @digitaldogs233
      @digitaldogs233 3 місяці тому +2

Why? When using your dominant eye is way more accurate than instinctive, and even in instinctive the brain knows this thus without realising it your dominant eye is doing the work. That's why instinctive only works at a short distance. I get it, instinctive sounds cool. But think about it, why would you need peripheral vision if your aiming at a dot? You don't, and what's really going on in the brain is its 99.9% using your dominant eye for true aim, other wise a sniper rifle would have 2 lenses, but then your 100 yard shot would be way off because your mind is getting mixed signals. Jeff may not want to except this but even having both eyes open your brain is using your dominant eye, it has to, its programmed to.

@digitaldogs233 I like to try new things. I'm actually left eye dominant but shoot right-handed. I picked up trad archery in january this year after 13 years of not shooting and I'm learning g a lot more than I did back then. I'd like to shoot instinctive and with aiming.

@digitaldogs233 Sorry, I didn't see your whole message. I'm not shooting past 23 yards right now. I honestly don't know enough about it to say what's right and what's wrong. @@richardstheman1 in Trad, nothing is "right or wrong" bro!! It's "what works for you". Olympic archery is very different, there certainly is "right and wrong" in Olympic archery.
There are old outdated models referencing "brain function" as "hard-wired" unchangeable traits, and while this is true to a minority of brain functions, it's false when it comes to "Neuroplasticity" in the new field of Neurology. What that means is; the brain, that follows the Mind, has traits of plasticity, meaning it's highly influenced by Mind function changes to accommodate those changes, ergo - the brain rewires to accommodate the Mind functions that generate behaviours.
A fundamental differentiation between Mind and Brain is that the Mind goes beyond the body, the brain is contained within the body. Two very differing distinctions that effect the neurology and it's wiring. The field of Neuroplasticity debunks the old models used in archery for a long time, like target panic can never truly be overcome. Not true! Never was true.
In my opinion, to make a real "choice" of shooting style in archery, one must try, and effectively produce the desired results of, each form before identifying which form is most conducive to a person's current neurological conditioning.
      Aim small, bro!👊💥👊

@@brettellis423 I completely agree with that. That's why I like to be open-minded and try different things to see how it works for me. And months later, I still tried different techniques to see if it would work better for me than what I was previously doing.

Jeff thanks for all the great material. Question: I just got back to shooting my recurve after 20 years and have been paying attention to your videos and really getting back to my old but new way of shooting such as three fingers under as I use to shoot split. It seems to work better. The question is thank shoot instinctive and right handed but my dominant eye is my left. I wear contacts which one eye is for distance and one is for near sightedness. How do I perfect my consistency being right handed with dominant left eye? I think getting back to shooting that I’ve been blessed to find your channel and all the quality information you share. I’m hoping to shoot some 3D tournaments soon. Thanks

For example I shot split finger for 30 + years watched one of your Videos and tried 3 under and immediately shot better.i believe instinctive is best for hunting hands down. I been sitting here drawing my "air bow" thinking about back engagement, turning the shoulder, anchor, all the things you talk about. With an "air bow" if you go through thr motions your forward hand is "the sight" it makes a natural V which is actually right where the shelf is. Point being...grab your air bow and "pick your spot" you will find your "v" on the top of your forward hand is naturally on the target. Interesting.

Well we all have a dominant eye, that's why instinctive can only really be trusted at around 25 yards. The only way to get a good shot in beyond that is with your dominant eye. That's normally what a coach will find out before you even pick up a bow, it can determine whether or not your a right or left handed archer. Especially when your using a traditional long bow that has no sight widow, the arrow is your only point of sight. Shocks me that some ",trainers" won't even mention dominant eye, when is so important Especially at distance.

Hi Jeff, thank you very much for your good videos.
I like your shooting method very much. However, this archery method is slow to load the arrows and is not suitable for rapid shooting.
This is no problem in the United States, because the hunter can hire another person to protect the hunter with a rifle, or at least the hunter can carry a high-powered pistol to protect himself.
However, this is not possible in my country. In my country, it is illegal to own a gun. And in my area, brown bears and black bears often appear. Therefore, rapid shooting is a must.
Jeff, you are an expert in archery. Could you design a fast way to load the arrows and shoot arrows with your archery method? This fast arrow loading/shooting method should be able to shoot one arrow per second.
    Thank you very much.
Your help will be deeply appreciated.
