10 hours a week is my sweet spot because I enjoy seeing personality, mood disorder, and trauma clients so I find anymore than 10 really starts to burn me out!Community counseling agencies scarred me with their 40 hour work weeks with a various clients and 40% no show rates! Luckily I no longer work for a non profit agency and I have found I am much happier!
@@terseandtiny1746 They really shouldnt have us go to them right out of school, because once you get licensed u will likely never go back and then the populations served sometimes get left with burntout, angry, therapist who want to give there all, but just dont have it to give anymore. I sometimes wonder how much community counseling agencies contributes to therapist leaving the field within 5 years of being licensed.
That client cap completely makes sense to me! I'm glad you found your sweet spot after working so hard at an agency. I do truly hope the systems and values of our agencies can shift so they are sustainable workplaces for more therapists.
@@virginia4766 I don't have a second job as I am in school doing my Ph.D. but they 10 client a week sustains me because A. I have income from my husband and B. I am on a CPT % split with my company so I make about $65-$80 per each client. and any collateral we do (talking to other medical professionals on the clients behalf, filling out forms like fmla, ect) we bill $50 for every 15 min we are engaged in collteral services and get our % rate cut from it.
Thank you for this! I feel seen 😊 I have a part time private practice and I am starting to feel like this is enough for me. I don’t want to burnout and regret even becoming a therapist. This video speaks directly to my thoughts and feelings of not moving into full time.
Thank you for an honest approach to this field. It is so refreshing to hear this. If I may, my outside interests involve marketing, digital marketing, IT-web design, cybersecurity, and networking. Take a business course or pursue an interest that keeps you sharp. Two positive therapy thumbs up Doc.
I'm a student right now, but also self employed as a dressmaker/ custom clothier. I plan to always do both to keep balanced and be creative, which is really important to me!
I love that mix of careers! Before Private Practice Skills, I used to run an Etsy store selling my knit and crochet goods. I've since closed it, but crafting is such an important outlet for me still!
This is so cool! I worked as a florist for many years and dream to one day have a little floral shop/zen garden of my own. This inspires me to one day balance both. Maybe even have a little private space in the back to see clients!
@@deborahlara That sounds AMAZING! One of my "think big" dreams is to someday buy a building with an atrium in it and at least part-time use the atrium space for therapy sessions. Love these big ideas!
Deborah Lara Oh, that is my goal! Do it! I plan to incorporate nature/ecotherapy as a big part of my practice, and use a secluded area on my property for that.
My sweet spot is 15 - 17 clients per week. I have two teenagers and as long as they have needs, they are my priority. After they have moved to a new phase of life, who knows? I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. So far, I'm loving the work that I do.
I love that! 15-18 was my sweet spot when I wasn't a mom yet. Things have adjusted for me since then ;) But who knows, it might be my sweet spot again in the future. I love that flexibility!
I’m a full time private practice therapist and I seem to only feel motivated when I have a busy schedule. If I’m not busy, I don’t feel fulfilled. I guess I’m an exception 😂
Your videos are so informative! Thank you! I was wondering what your recommendations may be if you are looking to scale down your clinical load, such as having 20 clients per week but wanting to scale down to 10-15 clients. What is the ethical way to do this?
One option is to stop taking new clients for a season until things slow down. If you need the shift to happen more quickly than that, it's absolutely ok to refer out! There are different ways to approach deciding who to refer, whether it's based on schedule, keeping the highest needs folks on your caseload, or other options. I hope this helps!
im starting school this fall and I love this video! I actually switched to part-time work after a big burn out (working in sales) and I plan to continue this when I begin a PP :)

I think many of us were scarred by the agencies.

London do you also do additional work on the side or is 10 enough to sustain you financially?

Love this! I was working a 40 hour work week, and feeling burned out! I feel like my sweet spot is 12 clients/week!
I am so happy being a part-time therapist at this time of my life and intermittently I teach students with Autism. :)
That's awesome! And the most important part is that you're so happy with that mix. Love it!

That's an amazing mix of talents and interests! Kudos to you for exercising all the different parts of your brain that bring you joy!
Thank you, Marie.
That is a lot to juggle at once! Private practice has been a huge win for me while I'm in the early momming phase of life. Best wishes to you!

After 30 years in non profits I will be making more than I ever did and with fewer headaches and it will still only be working part time.

I'd assume as you close the excess client spots, don't open new cases

Way to go for filling up quickly! I hope your schedule has found that nice sweet spot since then :)
