A fairly comprehensive review across the Holley EFI products. Thank you for that, much appreciated. Very helpful!
Good stuff. Thanks for the breakdown. I'm entry level Sniper on my N/A BBC just getting my feet wet with EFI. Your class has helped me a lot.
Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I picked up a dominator because of this video.
I was going to go with a terminator x for my next project until I found out that they raised the price $400 for the system. I will stick with HP tuners and the stock computer.
I thought it looked more expensive than it was
My man just put Devin the Dude on there LMAO!
Perfectly placed too.
I would have loved to pay less for my ECU but I wanted the dual O2 sensors. Pretty much everything else about the Dominator is overkill for my application but it is what it is.
After watching this, I was thinking the same thing. Why on earth would Holley not be able to handle O2 sensors on both banks!!! All factory V8s have pre and post Cat sensors on both banks. These systems are supposed to out shine OEM stuff, Right??!! What logic was put into, “one wide band in one bank should do the trick”… am I missing something here guys?
@@Texasknowhow
Under federal law, Holley's ECU's aren't legal on emission controlled vehicles. Sensors before and after a cat are solely for emissions and not needed for tuning. You might not have emission testing in your state but federal law doesn't care. Do a quick search for "diesel tuner busted by feds". I'm not saying they'll go after you for modding your daily driver. They go after companies that sell parts/accessories that alter emissions.
Holley is likely doing it as a C.Y.A move. If the ECU could read pre and post cat O2 sensors it would be an easy sell for the EPA to claim the ECU was designed to alter what are clearly emission controlled 96+ vehicles. While the Dominator can use more than two O2 sensors, the first two are for monitoring left/right banks and the rest are only for individual cylinder monitoring.
I got a terminator X mainly bc I can't tune shit with a laptop. I just wanted the thing to tune itself well enough to drive to shows and scoot on the highway.
I think this video just made me solidify my decision in getting the haltech elite 2500
EFI sucks. I’m 55 and I’ve been dealing with EFI since the eighties.
Look at your phone and what it can do.
Look at a gaming console and look what it can do.
And what they cost.
Now look at your EFI ... what a rip off.
EFI is still the future. Lol give me a break.
They’re milking us.
LQ4 going into 96 tahoe with auto trans, looking to daily drive, might boost it down the road, leaning towards the Dominator, but not sure if it is overkill.
Thank you Joe! This helped me decide! I'm going with a HP. Has plenty of inputs and outputs for my hotrod pickup!
Your ad libs on the videos are amazing. They crack me up.
HOLLEY EFI TERMINATOR X MAX STEALTH 4150 - BLACK 550-1012 can you compare this one?
I got my HP/NTK mostly due to the fact I had zero plans for boost and did not need all the outputs. It is going in a footbrake bracket car, so I want to be able to control most of the junk manually. Really only output I have set up so far is the nitrous, but that is a long ways off before I play with that.
Sounds like a Dominator will be in my future. The internal logging and extra outputs will be a huge plus. Building a twin turbo ls gbody.
Got a deal on one about 3 years ago, and it’s been sitting in my closet until I have a reason for it. You just can’t go wrong with the amount of input and output the dominator comes with
Have any experience with the Edelbrock Pro Flo 4? It's a fully sequential setup I was thinking about using one of my big block Ford
The devin cut in there made my day lol
Id love to hear your opinion on the sniper. I have a super sniper on a turbo SBM and I really like it. I would never run it for a serious set up but a fun street strip car, it's great. At least in my opinion. It does have it's downfalls though
what are the down falls?
Thanks for clarifying on the difference 👍👍
It is garbage you have to use a Holley dash. Term x doesn't allow racepak or other aftermarket options. Only way to set up custom gauges is to reverse engineer the proprietary Holley can bus protocol. Something some aftermarket companies did.
Thanks for the info bro, I was looking at the 550 EFI for a first time buyer for my C6 Z06. I can pair this with the 6.86" or 7" dash as well correct?
EDIT: Corrected the dashes do work on them lol sorry I forgot to rewind to that part.
Fantastic info. Ty for making these videos.
whats efi good for beetle 1973-76 ? thanks to help 🙏
Awesome vid Joe. Gonna go with Term XMax in my Fairmont. Just a simple 5.3 turbo/4L80
Fueltech to the front
Definitely cover at a minimum the xflow 1375 please. This is what I'm running and familiar with. Running single 7875 on a 351w
Is the hp capable of utilizing a strain gauge shifter?
Very good video, learned a bunch. Definitely appreciate you putting this info out for free!
Joe Simpson Good info man. So how would you compare Haltech vs Holley stuff
Wonder what the dominator goes for price wise
What would you suggest for engine trans package if your running a 6l80? I’ve been told neither of the Holley options will work.
Legit information and great production quality these days! Excellent video brother!
I'm doing a hemi swap 5.7 or 6.1 I just want it to run the motor and tranny and be able to tune when I change the cam to be able to get the most power thanks
I'm looking for something to run a Maserati motor. What would you suggest?
Hey, I'm having a hard time deciding on what system is gonna be the best or right. It'd going into a 2012 silverado, along with a lq9 with 4" stroker crank. It currently has a 4.3v6. It's not a daily driver or used to haul anything. Do I need a system that talks to the body control module, or not? I've looked at Fitech systems, but again, just not sure! Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
saved, invaluable knowledge that I will eventually need when I get off my ass and work on my car
hey i know this video has been up for a bit but i forgot i had a question until i am getting closer to installing my holley ecu. So long long story short i bought a holley terminator ls (#550-660). I thought it was a steal (lol oww) on sale during xmas 2020? maybe 2018? anyway it was about a month later the terminator x was released and i see sloppy mech showing it being used a junkyard truck. I had committed to a cathedral intake and still wanted Holley's self tunability so I was sold on this unit although im only running a cammed NA 5.3 its money spent a while ago so im not stuck on the terminator x being cheaper. however im wondering why the terminator ls is never mentioned. I was told it can run alcohol injectors and i have trans control with dbc. Its a very impressive unit but the lesson was learned to wait until you need something to buy it. Joe if you have a chance could you compare the terminator ls ecu, the only things i can find a difference between the x and ls is the computer housing and alch injector capability>? Is this just an in between unit of terminator x and the dominator? thanks if you got the time, and thanks for your channel helpin ppl like me get real tuning info from someone with a sense of humor and gets it. Im up in jersey i was thinking about driving down for a tune!
love to hear your sniper recommendations
Sniper yes.
It’d be cool if you could go through the sniper EFI
I have a 67 Pontiac gto with a 462 running 13.2:1 and was thinking of starting my journey with efi
If I want to run mpfi with a throttle body and a blower on a classic engine with no need for transmission control or fans. HP with a Holley throttle body would be my best option for what a need vs affordability?
Hey bud summit racing has a bunch of holley dominator ecu in stock
They come and go. They usually don’t last long!
Yes do a video on all the sniper ecu I was looking at the sniper 4500 1500hp capable units
Let me get one of those junk terminator X’s floating around lol
How do you feel about the haltèch nexus v5? I think the built in PDM is flat out genius and should become industry standard
My biggest gripe with X is the O2, i have to replace mine about every 4 months. Running 93 pump gas btw.
I am doing something unique. Going to see how high I can wind a NA Pontiac 400 if I go fully counterweighted crank, billet caps, h-beam rods, light pistons, dry sump and "whatever it takes" for a valve train (have to make a good guess as to what the bottom end will take in manual trans road-racing sports car type usage -first).
I am going to fab an IR intake with a HUGE bank of outboard motor reed valves right at each inlet. It'll be fun to mechanically eliminate intake reversion. Also: -at below -peak rpm it'll store that air for the next inlet-opening event : D
Because no reversion it will hardly matter if the injectors are timed or not. If I could more or less mimic mechanical constant-flow I would prefer it. I'd rather run shower head injectors anyway (yes - it would take a hell of a transfer function and real good intake stack temperature sensing requiring some processing speed and power) with altitude, temp, throttle angle, rpm and O2 inputs only.
Any guess on if anything shot of a Dominator will accomplish this? Holley isn't much help . . .
Hell ya, would love to see a video like this on the Sniper line up...especially for guys looking just to retrofit and upgrade something old, for reliability purposes.
Already filmed it just gotta edit it
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest nice...thanks man
Building a LS for a Jeep/Rock Crawler... Also using the dual throttle body Edelbrock which means I am going to have to use a Dominator. But I also want to use a 6L90e... Terminator X Max now has the option of running the 6L80/90 yet as far as I can tell, the Domimator still can not run those transmissions...?
Great video, thank you. So, I purchssed the term because I didn't do as much research as I should have. It was the thing to get. It was 2023 and went with it. The car is going to be a street strip car, but heavy HP possibility. It's a f1x modular setup. Non drive by wire and non electric transmission. Am I f'ed with this setup? What I mean by that is, can it handle a 1000 crank modular vehicle setup? Also, the tuner that tuned my car was a complete rip off and now I'm wondering if he even fully tuned it or just let the term base tune itself? The Dyno sheet shows no air fuel ratio throughout the graph. Just shows hp and at what rpm. I can send the Dyno sheet. Also, I never got the handheld. Never knew it even supposedly came with one. So he kept it? Is that so I wouldn't see what he DIDNT DO, Or the lack of? It's been a heavy mess with this shop. They really screwed me. Anyways, should I find a used JUST dominator ECU and plug it in? Will the car run, or will I need to have it tuned again? Also, I have the Holley smart coils and digital dash. If you could help out, it would truly be helpful. Feel totally tooken advantage of. I certainly know much more now than I did then. Thank you. I did like and subscribe
Hindsight is telling me I should have bought a Dominator and not a Terminator X Max. as I think I'm running out of inputs and outputs. Honestly at first my thinking was it's just a street car and just want 4R70W control.
Add the can I/O box you are GTG
@427gt already have one for it. Since now the AC is going back in too as well as a few other things not originally planned I may end up needing a second can mondule
I’m running the Terminator X because I’m poor and running high impedance injectors. However I did ditch the poverty 3.5” display for a 7” Holley display 🧐🎩
The 3.5 is nice especially for data logging.
I want to add, the tuner made me let him purchase the unit and said that this was the one to go with because it is soecific to a 4.6 modular engine? Thats what i was told. He also charged me 2500 for it. Later i see that i could of gotten it for about 1700. So, he made 800 on me for ordering it. Said he wouldnt tune car unlesss he purchaed it. Had my car all apart, so i felr stuck. I feel like a fool, but thats what it is. Again, i can send the dyno sheets and all receipts. Youll then see the robbery. Thanks.
I'll stick with the terminator x max I just need to run my 6.0 LS and my 4l80e in my 2nd gen ram 2500 4wd just going to put a cam headers maybe a small turbo that's it but probably just gonna do a cam and headers maybe intake it's going in a heavy ass ram 2500 4wd with 6 inch lift and 35 in tires the 6.0 gonna give it some ass definitely but not gonna be a race truck just gonna be somthing that sounds good have some ass and a big ass truck
Do a sniper ecu please some of us like the carb look
Whst work u recommend for a big block Chevy what's a ton of ram port injection and dual throttle bodies
which product you think is best for 2F Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 40 engine? Thank you.
Thanx Joe, it's refreshing to get a honest, bias opinion. I am putting a 2003 LQ4 with maybe a larger cam and a TBSS intake into a 89 Chev truck. I am not a seasoned mechanic or tuner and this is my first swap. Do you have a recommendation on what system to use? I am from Canada and the Terminator X Max (I will be running a 4L80e trans) is about $2400 before tax to buy up here, any help would be greatly appreciated.
X max is most cost effective option. Dominator is the only other choice but it’s way more expensive
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest Thank you, Dave
A lot of good info
Hey joe i have a question. Do you know why a holley terminator x ecu will only crank an not give any spark or fuel? It wont pick up any rpm signal at all. Im starting to get concerned that the ecu is toast.
Everyone I help brings me a terminator…. They want bump, boost controller, dual fuel pump control, shift solenoid, fans, low impedance injectors… etc…
What would you recommend for a car making 3,500 to 4,000?
Do you think the dominator would be capable of running air suspension control? The current level/height sensors are a 0-5v sweeping pot. Already looking at a xmax for the trans control (6.0 turbo ls with 4l80e) but if It will do air ride control the dominator would be worth while. Thanks.
Doable, although most ride control is now dependent on iPhone app. If you find a Dominator get it and run the whole car. ECM BCM TCM, with a Holley 12.3 Pro Dash,,, also if you can find one........
After looking at multiple ecu options, I can say I am a little disappointed in holley's base tune for mod motors. Its incredibly generic and I understand it is a base tune but the tunes from the megasquirt pnp and the haltech I went with were much more worked out in multiple areas such as idle, spark, and transient throttle. This is supposed to be one of the biggest things about the termx is that it supports the big american 3 (company) V8s. Yet the aussies that barely got any mod motors have a better tune out of the box.
I went with Holley term x max against my better judgement. I think I should have gone with the megasquirt. Would you buy another megasquirt?
@@frankrey7676 I bought a haltech elite 2000. I do really like it. The only negative is that I had to buy a jumper harness and wideband controller. So all of that takes up more space. The megasquirt pnp sits right where the stock computer does. I would definitely like to try a megasquirt setup but I currently like my haltech so much I dont want to switch.
Well said 🤙🏼 Holley should hire you for ad's like this.
I have the terminator x Max i need to plug the TCI paddle shifter run in the terminator ecm
My head hurts with all the different stuff out there.. I have been looking into a stand-alone unit for my LT1 gen2 sbc this motor has the "opti spark" and no rear distributor hole in the back of the intake which is in a 4thgen f-body camaro .. note: intake manifolds for these engines are non-existent that will fit under the cowl of a 4thgen f-body that I can use a distributor there is not enough room unless you cut the cowl... which i do not want to do just wish there was an easier option that doe snot requires tp spend thousands to get rid of the old odb1 PCM..
I've got a 97 S14, Its got a 5.3 LS from Yukon truck, T56 from 01 Camaro, whipple supercharger.
Runs on stock GM ECU, clean custom harnesses. Dakota digital for gauges.
The car currently running lean, RPM/Speedometer gauges not working properly.
Initially was thinking to get a Dominator but the price is high on those, after seeing this video, Terminator x might be a good option for me.
Only thing is that I've heard the harness that comes with Terminator x aren't that good, and 3.5 inch screen won't display everything, only oil pressure, temp, AFR, timing. also as you mentioned in the video, it doesn't have oil&air temp sensors.
So my question is that should I keep using Stock ECU since it should easily handle 1000hp, and just go with a 7 inch display and a GPS speedometer adaptor?
Hope my question make sense, any tips will be much appreciated and thank you for the video.
Daily cruise only
I'm switching from a F.A.S.T. XFI to a Dominator on my car. I have two sets of injectors with one set on pump gas and the other set using 116 race fuel. The Dominator is going to be transitioning them as the engine builds boost. Along with that, I have three fuel pumps, dual PWM cooling fans, a transmission oil cooler fan, a 4L80e electronic transmission, C02 map controlled wastegate, 7 pressure sensors monitoring pressures, I'm thinking about dual oxygen sensors...just because I can😁. The DOMINATOR is the one to get if you want the best. There's just SO MUCH MORE options on the Dominator than the XFI can offer. Should've bought it before the economy went to shit.
Im not very smart in this kinda stuff but the dominator is $4,000 where the X is $1,700. Like i said im not very knowledgeable in this but id say that for the price the x is perfect for a street car. Assuming you not gonna run boost
DOMINATOR... But Not Available... "Inquisinator" says that's weird... What about the Denso cross on the Bosch O2. What makes the NTK so different?
2:15 What is that ?
Inside a tunnel ram manifold, maybe ?
Math channels
What would you recommend for a big block 454? I would like to find a old Accel Super Ram intake or maybe a GM performance ram jet intake. I'll be running a procharger as well. Also will have a 4l80e behind it, I currently have a TCI stand alone controller for that. But I wouldn't mind a ECU that controls all of it.

So holley advertises Terminator Max as being able to do drive by wire? Is that not true? Researching an LS swap and seems like terminator max would be easiest route for a decent cruzer.
Yes the x max will do drive by wire
super helpful! I will be going from the terminator X to the dominator here in a few years with a new engine setup. good to know I can use the same harness etc
So I have a question. I finally installed my Xmax with trans controller. My question is that I havent gotten it toned, but just let the system do its thing. Is that ok?
I mean if it runs it runs but why spend all the money on something and not use it to its full potential?
Let’s see that sniper video so I can link people over to your channel for not one but two videos.
My biggest issue with any aftermarket system is how reliable are they? It’s one thing if I inject my 340 or swap in a Hemi in my Duster. But I also have a 79 Ramcharger that I take to the middle of nowhere. As of now I run a carb on a mild 360 magnum. It will eventually get a 5.7 Hemi. As of now the plan is a Mopar ECU. I know they are not the easiest thing to tune but they are reliable. I don’t want to be stranded 100 miles from civilization on some mountain. I can’t call AAA.
Would love a video on the sniper.. I just bought one a few months ago and not really sure if I shot myself in the foot
If you haven't installed it yet, swap for a Terminator Stealth setup. The Sniper is the worst throttle body EFI Holley offers.
@@michaelallen2501 already installed it.. at this point it’s personal.. gonna make that thing my bitch 😅
awesome video and lots of into! im looking to convert my 91 3000gt vr4 to e85 with a flex fuel sesnor. can i use any of these ECU to do that? will i need to re-pin or replace sensors since mine are older mitsubishi? any info would be great as im somewhat of a beginner!
Being I don't understand half of what you're talking about...you just convinced me that I don't want EFI and I'll stick with the good ole carburetor!
I'm installing a 351W into a 70 Bronco. I can't decide if I should use Terminator X MPFI or Stealth TBI. Naturally Aspirated, 400hp and a manual transmission. Advice is welcome
Devin FTW
I'd really like to see a sniper video
I want to put fuel injection on a 1963 chevy 292 inline 6. Sequential injection won't work because it's siamese port intake
Hi,…I have learned a lot and appreciate your knowledge. Question. If I get a Holley ecu and have the car tuned… does the ecu allow the tuner to lock the ecu/tune? Does the Holley HP/ dominator have traction control built into ecu or you have to buy another box?
I bought one of the last foxbody kits, terminator x. Haven't installed it yet. Just put a junkyard 5.0 engine back in it and gonna try to start it on factory ecu to make sure it's all good before I go into putting the terminator in.
You have to fix your twitch, HAA HA , Great timing I was just on this merrygoround and I found the info helpful, to say the least!!
Can the universal terminator x 550-936 run MSD's DIS coil near plug.. ?
Street strip car, true street events. 427 FI 94mm turbo, th400, radial car. Leaning towards dominator
Would I terminator be fine for a booster 302 running 93? Not racing the truck might make a pass or two but the transmission is a limiting factor for me at the moment, or should I go to a hp/dominator ecu
Hi Joe, on your opening screens at 13 seconds you show a clip of what appears is a 3.5 screen with an rpm shift type indicator display on it? What ecu or software is that? Can you get that type of display on any of the 3.5's.
Clark Kenneth Moore Gary Brown Scott
What about HOLLEY EFI TERMINATOR X STEALTH 4150 2X4
X-Max enjoyer here...have you seen any type of waterproof case for the ecu? I only have room to mount it in the engine bay and ran into a problem on power tour where water ran off the hood and onto the ecu and it's pretty much useless until it dries out. i solved it by duct taping the seams for the moment, but that even feels sketchy for me. i'm half a mind to open the case and pot it.
Bought a Terminator X. Ran out of advanced tables almost immediately. Regret not buying an HP.
I remember back in the day deleting the ECU in G-Body’s and square body’s lol
I’m looking at the terminator x max stealth Since I’m running a carb intake with a hat. I will keep the boost low but also needed the trans control for the 4l80e. I didn’t really see too big a price difference.
Can you use more than one Holley CAN I/O MODULE. I think you CAN.
