  • There are tons of videos telling you what you should buy, what are the classics, etc...
    Is this really what we need, is this really healthy, isn't it making the whole VC more homogeneous and conservative?
    Here are my disjointed thoughts about that, with some music talk in the process.
    Agree, disagree, discuss, never behave.

    Stunty, I don’t think I really understand that point where you talk about people goong after recommendations made by reviewers on YT or elsewhere. What’s wrong with that? I know collective minds always tell better than the opinion of one, but here we are not really there. We all know there are many good records, but I think we can also admit we keep discovering new stuff to listen to here. I listen to music since I was a kid, I got recommendations from “the influencers” of that time - a TV show, a radio show, some magazine, a friend, etc. Maybe I missed the point here, but if this is what you wanted to say, I don’t find it wrong. Thanks for your shows, very informative as always! Peace and get well!

    This is such a great video ... I think record collecting is sometimes about creating a narrative, finding connections between seemingly disparate genres, and making a statement about what you believe is essential in music. You, and many of the VC members who are most entertaining, are trying to confront orthodoxy with your collections. An archive of records is really an argument of records.

    Appreciate your ruminations on the dilemma of essential records. It should always be ones personal journey and relationship with the music. There will always be taste makers that push and promote the narrative and stories of records. I think most people ( I assume) buy records to capture a feeling or return to a moment in time. I'm rather new to your channel. Discovered it through your livestreams with Michael 45. Your words here describe exactly what I think about the current state of the record collecting community. I will always be a music lover first and a record collector second. Why collect stuff if you need others to tell you what to get? I don't have hardly any of the "must have" records people are talking about, but my collection says a lot about me. And when I browse through my records I get filled with emotions thinking about all the good stuff that's in there and when I found this or that record. Also, being interested in new music and supporting artists and labels who are doing new things, taking things further or in different directions... that is also important to me. Thank you for doing this!

    • @StuntrockConfusion
      @StuntrockConfusion  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words. It seems many people from the VC are either somewhat new to the hobby, or took a long break and returned more or less recently. And yes, this can be a community, and most people want to belong, in general. It may takes a little courage to break from the loud flock, and it doesn’t mean you can’t still be part of it if you want to. My record collection is insane, to me, and maybe only just to me. But as you’ve stated, that’s the only thing that should really matter. If it impresses others and you enjoy that, fine, but it’s just another added. Minor dimension. UA-cam is a visual medium foremost, so if you only show records no one knows about, it can be a little frustrating, as the sharing experience isn’t complete, which is why so many probably focus on widely accepted releases, an orobouros. Excellent. Baudrillard claimed that current society has replaced all reality and meaning with symbols and signs, and that human experience is a simulation of reality.
    I believe this can relate to these classics that people want to project a certain image but may not actually enjoy. It's the symbol of the classic and not the music itself.

    I had no idea there have been certain single pressing runs of 20, 100, 500, etc. I had no idea about how repress runs are pressed in a quantity based on license duration. I had no idea why a record was released on a particular label and then released on another label. That is golden information for anyone getting brain damage from looking through Discogs and teaching themselves about a record they have in hand or a record they are researching.
    An analogy here is fine art prints and fine art photography. It’s the same practice. This explains why in tourist areas there are print (litho and silkscreen) dealers selling Warhol, Haring, Lichtenstein and Miro prints for $1K, yet an original print is auctioned at Sotheby’s for $100K.
    That original print is analogous to the 1X original vinyl pressing. In the US those originals came out of a few regional plants (Pittman, etc) at one time; and then they stopped. Then the re-press license. Then the re-masters from specialty pressers like Analog Productions and MoFi.

    • @StuntrockConfusion
      @StuntrockConfusion  2 роки тому +3

      Michael. Remember though, that most records, more than 99%, will only ever get one single pressing, ever. looking at the MoFi, AP, etc is a little mioipic view of the market

      @@StuntrockConfusion True. And very true for the Japanese market, where I retired to (with one pressing and another a decade later). And true for the independent and boutique labels which you featured in your video.
      But it’s the mass market consumer titles; the western pop and rock & roll multi-pressed variants; that’s where many people start collecting from and get thoroughly confused.
      Oh, absolutely I set the boutique audiophile manufacturers apart from this.
      But you get into popular recordings that you yourself have grown out of, and I’m embarking on a similar path to get away from. The whole Led Zeppelin, Derek & the Dominos, Blind Faith, etc. Those have hoodwinked newbies to throw good money after bad and get frustrated or gotten convinced that only a rapacious $100 USD is the amount to spend on a single record. And that taints the hobby in my opinion.

    A great example of what you are talking about is Trout Mask Replica. I don't know how many people in the VC have that album and hate it or don't get it. They most likely have it just because they heard about it in the VC. I picked up some Keith Jarrett CDs for a dollar a piece yesterday. I never hear about him in the VC, (I don't follow many VC UA-camrs) but he's one of my favorite pianists. It's funny because many times I hear suggestions of "great musicians" in the VC and when I check them out I don't really get the hype. I wish I had more experimental albums, but I buy cheap so a lot of my collection is just what I run across.

    • @StuntrockConfusion
      @StuntrockConfusion  2 роки тому +1

      Trout Mask is a good example, but it largely predates the VC. I remember reading articles in the early 90ies, in rock magazines, on how important it was to understand it and it’s brilliance. Good musicianship wouldn’t be a cardinal point as far as I’m concerned. So many prog rockers and modern pop composers are incredibly skilled musicians, and yet largely fail when it comes to relevancy and the so crucial sense of “danger”, for lack of better words.

    Hey Stunty, loved this video, mate. Spoke to me a lot, something I think about all the time... what does my music collection say about me (not specific to format, as I think that some music is better on a specific format, i.e. ambient on tape, jazz on vinyl, etc - just my opinion). I am a big fan of Jazz from Japan, so I spend a great amount on money on some of the LPs, and I always wonder if an album is worth $200 + because it has never been reissued.
    Great topic and at the end of the day, there's a massive difference between collecting and being a music fan - the same way there is a difference between audiophiles and music fans (to quote Thurston Moore - "Audiophiles listen to their sound system, music fans listen to the music"). Thanks again for talking about this.

    Very enjoyable, Stunty. I think like other expressions of art some classics are deemed so because of the impact they make socially-culturally. I think you address that point when you showed Nevermind. I have a copy of Closer and also My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. These latter albums (especially in the case of Loveless) were purchased based on reputation more than any direct connection I had with the music. They were not part of my own musical biography when they first appeared. Radio (both AM and FM) played an incredibly important role in exposing me to all sorts of music growing up. Certainly the records my parents had were not deemed "cool" --- and so it was left to me to embrace groups and singers that I discovered via radio and of course via my peer group - i.e., various friends growing up. Therefore, the Beatles and Jesus Christ Superstar, and Pink Floyd etc... etc... became part of my own musical identity --- thus paving the unique musical path I know walk. #NurseWithWound 🥰

    • @StuntrockConfusion
      @StuntrockConfusion  2 роки тому

      Yes! The thing to remember - and to aspire for, IMHO - is that amending that musical biography should always be pursued, as it is self growth. You make some interesting points. One thing that is special about music is that it is an entirely subjective experience. There is no permanent physical outcome like a painting or sculpture to critique. Perhaps that is why we fetishise the record as object instead, as if it is the music it carries. I suspect for most of us in most cases what we think of as classic is centered around what we were listening to when we were 15 or 16. I was that age when Closer came out having just discovered John Peel so it was and still is a very important record to me. Nevermind I liked but it wasn't important to me in that I already knew a lot of the music that influenced that record (Pixies) so it didn't sound very different or that special to me. I agree with you about buying records - it's more fun to take a chance on something that is obscure and relatively cheap rather than spending a fortune for a deluxe reissue box set of something that you already have. Even my favorite music I don't need 17 different takes or demos or live versions of the same song.

    Really liked The Oscillation! 😊 Good stuff. Well, FWIW I've been collection vinyl for over 40 years and I've honestly never understood how all these people just go out and buy everything new. For example, on the Steve Hoffman Forums where are great and I've learned a lot there, during say the release of the KISS remasters, I thought it was so odd that just about everybody who posted bought EVERY album. Almost everyone was buying EVERY album. I have never understood that. Yes, there are SOME of theirs that I like or newer releases of ones that I don't have AND happen to like. But, EVERY album...?
    So, in buying albums I've always ONLY bought what I really like. I always think it is so funny when people say, 'Oh I have 5000 albums and there are a lot I don't even listen to and I have to get rid of' I'm like... Well, WHY did you buy them in the first place then...? Silly... AND wasteful. So, the 2400 or so that I've collected I know I like and I pretty much will keep.
    As far as trying 'New Stuff'... About 25+ years ago my friend and I would go to all the used record stores here in the San Diego area. It was a lot of fun. And, many times I would go through the $2-$5 section and just grab a bunch of albums of which I knew absolutely NOTHING about. If the group or album name caught my attention, or the artwork on the cover, or especially the song names, I would go ahead and get it. So, even to this day I still have all of those, groups that still are unheard of but some really good stuff! 😁
    Like you say, we definitely need to just listen and find out what we like. I still appreciate these VC 'Authorities' when they suggest albums that they really like, but honestly MOST of the time I just don't care for these supposed 'Classics' I do NOT like Dylan, or generally speaking Tom Petty. I like a few of the Stones songs. I absolutely just do NOT care for Singer/Songwriter stuff, which pretty much eliminates a *LOT* of what most people buy and talk about. NO interest... I would say that out of all the albums that are suggested on the Steve Hoffman Forums, there are maybe about 5% TOPS that I end up liking and/or buying. So yes, you are quite right. I didn't realize that as you suggest that there are SO many people that just BLINDLY follow what others suggest. I certainly do not see any genuine benefit from that at all...
    Nice philosophical stream of consciousness BTW! 👍 I heard about you through Michael the 45 RPM guy. Oh, BTW I have had the original Loveless (and their other original releases) ever since they came out 😊 DAMN good group! LOVE the Shoegaze stuff (as well as some of the Ambient stuff you were playing) I'm most definitely going to check out The Oscillation.

    couldn't agree more with your reflections. the whole question of what records and the fetish with editions etc. is almost obscene as music separated from personal experience and life is pointless. your SAWII example is excellent because that record at the time was a profound experience, also communal in that we shared the record (probably on tape first) with friends via copy or lending and it was a soundtrack to the city and reflection of my psyche at the time, yet my present self no longer identifies with. indeed it was someone else who lived it and that moment with love/experience and even the place itself is lost in time. anyway, back to work. cheers friend

Usually poor music as well of course.( I don't have any records by the Stones, Petty or Dylan........horrible, I could not look myself in the mirror). Yes, VC very mainstream, but have been quite a few alternative folks over the years, probably most have left?

      For Teenagers? In a way yes, I don't feel the need to put it on as often as before. What to get from it at its most, I indeed already got it back then. But we aren't machines, yet, and a certain level of totemism can have its purpose. As you already know, I'm mostly with you on most of those acts, but I don't see the point in berating anyone who has a genuine love for those. Just don't sell us those as universal beacons of whatever you feel those are.

      @@StuntrockConfusion Beating?> I'd advocate torture then hanging, if repentence is not forthcoming. Dylan has long interested me, in a sense he's anti music, if you think about it. Should have stuck to poetry.
      I suspect Joy Division suffered due to the New Order effect- an unlistenable band, from the little I'd been exposed to. I recall hearing Transmission in 79' then going out to buy it the next day or two, it really stood out at the time. So distinctive, intense, urgent sounding. But a few years later it seemed less impressive. I had their 1st Lp for a while, but sold it, too many 'fillers'. By the age of 18 I was moving away from indie/alternative music. which is primarily for teenagers, or made by them even.
      VC has a lot of collectors Stunty, who are not always that interested in music. But it is a shame that folks are still by and large buying the same types of muzak sold in large quantities before. Jazz is especially depressing, the more average or poor lp's tend to get repressed for big money these days. I sell vinyl, everytime someone orders a Led Zeppelin Lp I die a little!

    I agree with you on almost everything - especially being your own boss and not following others' ideas of what the 'essential albums' are. I also think people really fall in to a trap if they only want audiophile pressings - this is such a narrow range of stuff that comes out on those pressings and if you look at a lable like MoFI, its enough to turn your stomach, taste-wise. That is some real conformist s***. I would be so bored if I had to listen to that music all the time. However, I do think reissues are super important in a lot of cases, and I am definitely waiting for them. That Aphex Twin LP you have for example - I can't pay $300 plus for it on the secondary market so am dying for a reissue. And during that time that I am waiting - I hate when I have to see others flaunting their copies around!! No offense ; )

As i had owned in my lifetime probably 20000 records.it feeled like in my early record collecting times like you have to manage them. When i Started buying records there Was no many TV Stations,nointernet only Radio or music magazines with such horrendous Reviews you just can shake your head just stupidity .but in the City were about 20 recordshops never any Lack of records.so i experimenting with records and gave them a try until i decided to purge them or keep them.records were cheap you could always get records inthe 1,2 or 3 Deutsch Mark bin wich had been 6 month or 12 month in their existence not yet Sold because Nobody ever listened this so i builded my Taste for music. I studied as you explained inyour finding Gold Video .Well money Was not always there to buy the Blockbuster records but only sometimes advertisement fooled you around and you get manipulaled with the hype. After the deep listening you find Out that this music Not always clicked with you..So i kept every record i bought for 1 year and in this Time every record get a second or third chance by rehearsel. The ones i dont keep i tried to sell on a fleamarket wich happened every year in Front of my place were i living. This used to to be the biggest 1 day fleamarket in the World as it was written in the Guinness book of records. They name it flohmarkt Vohwinkel as you can See via UA-cam. Its always last weekend in September .then i can have always quit a couple of hundreds records and have again space to buy the new ones.i never buy online i love to buy in the wild.and i am a very lucky guy sometimes i found really more than Gold in the wilderness.and try just to have fun.but i also experienced the opposite matter by guys who havent really relaxed vinyl collectors and they stressed Out too much.really fuckers and mostly nearly militant.they mistook this Hobby with bizniss. Pure moneymaking Thing.
