  • Drivers view of a Porsche 936 at Le Mans... Amazing 340 kilometers (211mph) run at Le Mans, France... Watch as he passes the slower Porsche Carreras like they're standing still. Driver is narrating in German gear changes and strategy as he makes his way through the course at Le Mans Subtitles in English. Pretty Awesome...

    This is definitely a Martini sponsored drive, but definitely NOT the Martini Porsche 917K that smoked the competition in 1971. This is Le Mans 1977, and this is the Group 6 Barth and Haywood Porsche 936, car No. 4,. chassis 001. It blitzed everything that crossed its path for 23 hours... Even Jacky Ickx ended up sharing their drive after his own 936(winner in '76 ) took an early nap. He nearly had a total misfire in this car too but Jurgen Barth dragged it over the final hour to win Le Mans, still by 10+ laps over the 2nd place Group 6 Mirage-Renault.

      ...smoked the competition in 1970... not 71.
      1970 was the first win for Porsche

      @Pulsonar 5 років тому +9

      @@therealsharps The Martini 917K (chassis 917-053) entrant No. 22 driven by Marko and Lennep did smoke the competition in 1971, and covered a distance record that stood for nearly 40 years. It was not until 2010 that the Audi R15 TDI plus (chassis 204) entrant No.9 beat this record by only a single lap. Nobody said that a Martini 917K smoked the competition in 1970, it is well known that the Porsche Konstruktionen-Salzburg 917K (chassis- 917-023) entrant No. 23 driven by Herman and Attwood brought Porsches first overall win in 1970, and the nearest Martini Porsche was the famous 'Hippy' art-car 917L in 2nd place.

    This is only excerpt from a video of Porsche at Le Mans in '77. Patrix446 is correct, this is a Porsche 936. Specs for the 936 are: Single turbo flat 6, 2140cc, 540 hp. The car weighs 1540 lbs, and has a top sped of 205 mph. From 1976 to 1981, the factory entered Porsche 936 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times with Jacky Ickx ('76, '77, '81). Various sources give a top speed of 217 mph, I think that figure is for the later spec 1980 cars.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 9 років тому +5

      Really nice to see a cool headed response to this. Top speed claims are invariably overstated. The ACO speedtrap figures (the only ones I trust) show this car doing 353 km/h (218.8 mph) in 1979 and then 356 km/h (220.7) in 1981. The ultimate refinement of the 936 was in 1983 when one was clocked at 371 km/h (230 mph), the fastest of any that year but I think one or both of these later variants had closed cockpits. You might know more about it than me. This is the 1983 car:
      www.lemans-history.com/imagens//1983/24h83_15_porsche.jpg
      That was the Joest version. The Kremer version, called the CK5 looked like this:
      www.lemans-history.com/imagens//1983/1983-22g.jpg
      Both were 936 chassis and neither had ground effect.

    340knmh in a 936 is probably a realistic speed down the Mulsanne, I don't believe that any 917 reached 395km/h (246mph) down there as is frequently quoted. Donohoe was clocked at 240 in the 917/30 which had double the power.

    • @aureliobrighton1871

      What I read was:
      "1971. In the pre-test, Derek Bell revs his 917 LH engine to 8100 rpm on the highest gear on the Hunaudieres straight. Back in the pits, engineer Norbert Singer calculates the corresponding speed must have been 246 mph/396 km/h.
      and
      "The 1971 Porsche 917 LH is almost synonymous with the exceptional Vic Elford and his race at Le Mans.
      Elford returns to race with Gérard Larrousse in the same car. After intensive wind tunnel testing resulting in the development of covered rear wheels, the right-hand kink at the end of the Mulsanne straight can now be taken at a full speed of 380 km/h."
      To me its unbelievable anyway :).
