By the way...I am proof that Ketones work! Memory was becoming a problem and brain image showed shrinkage more than normal for age. Within a few days of Keto and not taking statins, I got my brain back. Meaning my awareness, clarity, memory was available and noticeable. Grateful! Still have not had a visit with neurologist yet...

I have seen and heard a good number of videos about how ketones could help dementia like Alzheimer's, so this doesn't surprise me, but it is great news for hard evidence!
My mom has early-mid stage Alzheimer's (not yet diagnosed but pretty obvious) and I have tried to encourage her to go low carb if not keto -- even buying low-carb foods and preparing such meals whenever we eat together (or for her leftovers). But she is now 79 and it's been hard for her to give up her favorite simple-carb foods and food brands. No matter how many times I've told her about the benefits of low-carb, keto, and time-restricted eating (IF), she doesn't seem interested, or doesn't remember any of it anyway. So if someone already has short-term memory loss and short attention spans, what tactics can work to get them on board with keto, IF, or other beneficial changes? Are there experts on health motivation for elderly, forgetful, and/or stubborn people? If so, can you interview them for your show?

My mother has late stage Alz and was diagnosed as such over a decade ago...we saw signs of slippage, so we tested her thru a simple online test, the results of which advised a meeting with an MD, which she did also. Once she was diagnosed she had to face/admit/accept that she had Alz and then she easily accepted the treatment from the Dr. (Unfortunately it wasn't the keto diet.) I would recommend getting her tested soon as that may be a sole motivator for her to take action with treatment. Maybe she can even get tested at a more keto-friendly/alternative health care facility, so you could avoid the mainstream treatment approach, which did not help my mother. Caring for a loved one with the progression of dementia/Alz is nothing I would wish on anyone. Wishing you good luck!

Very informative...thank you. Wish our family had known this when our mother was first diagnosed with alz 15 yrs ago. My brothers and I would have gotten her onto keto asap. She is still alive but in a home care facility and extremely advanced stage now. It was incredibly sad and difficult to watch the disease strip her of her verbal eloquence and her agile, well read mind and reduce her to a mental shell of what she used to be. My hope is that with this new research others won't have to suffer thru watching (and caregiving) of their loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer's. (And as a form of both better health AND prevention, I am glad to be on the healthy version of the keto diet myself...thanks to a guy named Dr. Berg here on youtube.

Hi Joel! You are so good to be so caring of your Mom. My sister was diagnosed w/early onset Alzheimers in her 50's. She is now 65 and has been on a memory care unit for 3 1/2 years. Her husband is still working...Their youngest daughter is just out of grad school at age 26. Sadly, my sisters original neurologist was not innovative and was opposed to things like coconut oil. I've followed Dr. Perlmutter (and others, Dr. Bredesen) to educate myself. Lots of my family (my brothers) just were not interested. I am also on Keto, I also follow Dr, Berg! God bless you, your Mom, and all your family! I do believe "Food is Medicine" and hope more will come to believe it & eat accordingly.

Since the typical Western diet is so heavily centered on refined sugar it would have been interesting if there had been a third group in the study where participants were asked to remove all added sugar products from their diet but otherwise eat as normal including foods like whole fruit. Perhaps the results for that group would have had also registered a meaningful improvement in quality of life. Does refined sugar damage the mitochondria more so than any other substance we ingest? Thank you for the comment - I admit there is a lot I do not know about Alzheimer's, but I think it is important to try and develop testable theories to see if we can improve our current treatments for it. That is all I am doing really. So far, from what I see in my own patients, the data seems encouraging. But if I find out later on that the ketogenic diet is harming my patients, I will be the first person to admit it. Hope that makes sense and if we still disagree, that is ok. Very best, Matt.
