      @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863. Hello. I came to this video because I’m experimenting with V69 thread to repair/modify my dinghy sail and make covers. My machines are all “vintage” straight/zig zag , I’m using a Newhome 509 at the moment, and use 15k bobbin cases. I tried V92 thread but that was impossible, and I’m close to getting an acceptable stitch with V69. I have a number of cases to work with.
      I did get nesting on the underside of the calico I’m experimenting with, even with my top tension at maximum. This has led me to slackening off the case spring screw to the point where it’s virtually dropping out. The case I’m getting close to a result with, I removed the spring and
      gently eased it to try to remove some of its “springiness”. I’ve just ordered a case tension device to add some science to this process.
      Do you have any advice ? Thank you.

      @@californiadreamin8423 Hi, Thank you for your message. I had to google V69 thread as I had never heard of it. When I have read up on it it is used conventionally in the top and bottom of the machine and not the way I am using thick thread in this video. ~they suggest using a size 100 (16) or 110 (18) needle and making sure that the cone of thread stands at the back of the machine so that it can lift up from the top of the cone for a smoother feed to the machine. There are some handy tips on using this thread on the website : sail rite.com. Perhaps you could try their tips ? Good luck

      @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863 Hello again and thanks for replying. I’ve managed to tweak the springs in two 15k bobbin cases now , and achieved a reasonable stitch. I’ve changed from leather to jeans needles as I understand they have a finer point, and gone down to a 90 needle to see how it behaved. I reasoned that a smaller diameter hole in the old Dacron sail Im experimenting on…..prior to cutting from it material I’ll need ….and it went through the material more easily…..of course it is physically weaker , but time will tell.
      The motor on the 509 stopped and yesterday I replaced the capacitor in the hope it would fix it. It did. Next job is to use my jeans needles to shorten….my new blue jeans !! In the intervening period, brushing up on basic sewing, Ive been using a Belair straight/zig zag , Japanese “clone” machine which I bought on eBay for £24. It’s a little rolls royce, very smooth, and it gave me my first success with the V69 thread.
      Shortening jeans is quite a good test of a machine…..so I’ll use both machines , one for each leg 😳
      I look on the Sailrite site frequently, but I never thought of checking it out for tips on V69 thread, so thanks. I’m off to Skye soon to try out my dinghy , so the pressure in on to modify the sails with reefing points. Thanks again.

    I’m not sure if I missed this in the instructions. Do you have the walking feet down? I tried to zoom in but I couldn’t tell for sure.☺️
    I have a pair of jeans that I need to hem. I’m trying to match the stitches which is a triple stitch with a thick bobbin thread. In my case, I think it’s similar to Gütermann’s Extra Strong Thread in the bobbin. When doing a stitch like this for hemming, would you put the bobbin thread through the tension holder?

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  8 місяців тому

      @jenniferstinert5498 Hi, yes, I do have the feed dogs or teeth lowered on my machine for this technique. If you are trying to match the thread in a triple stitch then you are probably best using Gutermann Topstitch thread in the top of your machine and follow the following instructions. As you will be sewing conventionally, have your feed dogs/ teeth raised.
      For machine stitching with Gutermann Topstitch, we recommend a thinner thread in the bobbin such as Gutermann Extra Strong or Gutermann Natural Cotton. We also recommend a sharp, large-eyed machine needle such as a Schmetz Topstitch 100.
      Hope that helps

    Hi Claire, I see you don't put tape around your hoop. A friend told me I need to put tape around my hoop. I have an ordinary hand sewing hoop my Grandmother gave me 50 years ago. It's been sitting with my sewing gear all these years and sadly, I have never used it, so I thought I'd give machine embroidery a go. My hoop looks like yours.

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Sue, no, you don't have to put tape around the hoop. When I first started doing this 30 years ago I too was told to wrap my hoop. It isn't necessary for free machine embroidery. It was done for hand sewing to protect the fabric from being marked by the hoop when it was kept in the hoop for some time. Some people like the fact that the fabric is gripped better in a wrapped hoop but I don't do it and it's just fine. I say give it a go Sue

      @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863 Thank you so much for clearing this up for me Claire. I am busy gathering all your information and gathering my threads etc and then seeing what I can do with it all. Something simple and small, I think. I am slow to get started with all of this despite my keenness because other things seem to crowd out my life but the time is getting closer. I think too not having anyone to do it with me keeps me from getting into it too, well I have you, but you live in England and I live in Australia so it's a bit long distance. LOL. @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863 thanks for the quick response. is it possible to do with the hand look quilt stitch? I tried the size 5 thread but I think it's too thick cause it's not coming up to the top of the fabric. I'm trying to reproduce a sashiko look with a machine. but I think normal thread is too thin looking. do you know what thread I could use? is it possible to loosen the bobbin tension on brother machines?

    • @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863
      @clairemuirfreemachineembro7863  4 роки тому

      @@rubesdubes I think the size 5 is too thick for that. I would just experiment with different threads. If you have a drop in bobbin on your Brother machine there is a bobbin designed for bobbin work, enabling you to put thick threads in the bobbin. If it's a front loader I'd use another bobbin case and slacken the tension on it. Have you tried tightening your top tension as well?

    • @rubesdubes
      @rubesdubes 4 роки тому

      @@clairemuirfreemachineembro7863 thanks. yeah I have a drop in that uses 15j plastic bobbins. I didn't know there were different bobbins you could use, what do I search for for loose tension? I saw that some people loosen the tension on the bobbin case but I checked mine and it has a green dot on it that blocks me from using a screw driver, so I wasn't sure if I should mess with it. Yeah my top tension is as high as it goes. I ordered the thickest needle I could find to try to make a bigger hole for the thread. If that doesn't work I may need to use a normal sewing thread. I was thinking a 12wt thread.

      @@rubesdubes Hi Kitty, I've just re read my reply and realised that I missed out the word case, sorry. There is a bobbin case designed for bobbin work. If you have an Innov-is machine then Brother sell a Brother Bobbin Work Kit which includes the bobbin case designed for thick thread. I wouldn't alter your existing bobbin case. You don't need a large eyed needle because you just have invisible thread on the top of your machine and the thicker thread in the bobbin. It is an effect that I don't use but I do know there are some videos out there on it. I hope you sort it and achieve the look that you want.
