Thanks for the shout out sir! The Toad was going to be a comic book two pack for the Xmen movie. You would get the movie toy and a comic book version. I think it was only for Canada but I could be wrong. It was 20 years ago. I was supposed to do Sabertooth as well. I did the Wolverine and it got used all sorts of ways. The idea was each figure would look like they were engaged in a fight with each other. I was given a full green light to design everything. That's why the Toad clothes are all patchwork and Wolverine has the proportions and wounds. Have a good one!
Hey Phil, I dug around your Instagram a bit. I didn't realize how many figures you created from my childhood. That's got to be a cool feeling to have positively impacted millions of kids' imaginations - you certainly did mine! Glad Toy Shiz gave you a proper shout out on here.
@@chrish7983 It really is very cool for my old ass to meet so many cool folks that have such a positive memory of my work. I'm still at it. Planning on finishing a few toy lines of my own this year. Keep an eye out and thank you very much for the kind words Chris!
I still have all my toybiz mint in package from series 1 to 17. Every time I've made attempts to list and sell them I stop myself because going through them I realize how much I love them and its a reminder of things I will never come upon again as a collector nowadays. Everything from the paint details to the actual packaging. They are truly unique and they always bring me back to a time when being a collector / toy hunter was simple and fun. I bought my series 1 wave at a Gamestop of all places in the Garden State Plaza mall for 9$ a piece plus tax while I was on a date lol. Great times.
Anytime I see them out in the wild I try to snag a couple and now have 8 of the ToyBiz figs. I remember seeing them in stores when I was a kid (I'm 24 now), and although I never had any growing up I still get nostalgic getting them and going through the comics they come with and seeing the ads of the times inside. It's honestly like opening up a tiny time capsule.
It's ironic that Toad is not only a joke of a character in the comics and Marvel Legends line, he will probably be the most sought after figure of the anniversary edition wave!
This video brought a smile to my face. Lots of nostalgia about Toys R Us, and seeing these figures for the first time. Your enthusiasm, positive vibe, and general attitude towards collecting is great. Even if you point out the flaws it’s done with a sense of humor. The end comments about life is so true. Keep up the great work! It’s appreciated.
The Toad base was a reissue from the Spider-Man Classics Series 1 Man-Spider. You can see the three-toed footprints where the figure can be made to stand.
I laughed when you described the IronMan backdrop. That was a lot of words for "it's a stark satellite". Great review. The irony is the new versions of these don't do anything for me and with the raised prices and cardboard backdrop I decided to pass on all but Cap.
I still kick myself for passing on Toad when he first came out. I had the other three and my dad took me to Toys R Us to pick a toy. Wave 2 had just been released so I decided to grab Namor (who ultimately peg warmed hard) instead of the Toad they had available. Looking forward to him being released by Hasbro. I miss the bases/large BAFs and included comic. I also remember them being $8. Dang it inflation/increased shipping cost/increased cost of plastic!
I remember seeing these for the first time and snagging the variant hulk. I've always thought toad was an odd choice for wave 1 with the other 3 being who they are. I honestly miss toybiz.
I didn’t start buying them until first appearance Spiderman. That’s when I looked at the large Sentinel upper torso and it clicked my head “wait a minute this thing is gonna be huge!” So I went back and bought the other five figures. Then I bought the galactus series and all toybiz until hasbro took over. Too be honest I didn’t like the early legends as much. I saw wave 1 in the store and I wasn’t impressed by them. Now it’s cool to see how unique those figures are compared to the more uniform legends of today. One pick up I’ll always remember was I bought Marvel Legends doc ock, omega red, and the four armed Shredder from turtles 2003 all in one pick up at Walmart. Fun times.
I faintly remember way back when me and my dad would go toy hunting for marvel legends and we would buy entire waves and sell the Bafs on eBay. Simpler times
I have been steadily collecting Marvel Legends ever since this first wave and I like to have my quintessential versions of each character. This first wave Hulk is still the one I have on the shelf. For whatever reason, I have always loved the look of him more than most other Hulks even with his gorilla arms 😆
I bought Cap at a comic book store, probably in 2002-2003 when I began my "adult" collecting of action figures and really diving deep down into comic books. I still have that Cap figure in my collection to this day and he's still awesome and still in great shape. And I think it may have well been the only Marvel Legends figure that I had until the first Magneto came out, then another long span after that, probably not even until the Hasbro days. Cap and Magneto were always my top 2 Marvel characters of all time.
Man, what a fun trip down nostalgia avenue. I had the Cap and Iron Man from this wave, opting to not replace my Mego Hulk with the slap happy Hulk. Toad was an easy pass. Twenty years later and I'm chomping at the bit for the new Toad.
This was a really fun review. I was 14 when these came out in 2002 so I definitely remember them but I was so deep into wrestling figures at the time that I didn’t pay too much attention tbh.
I remember back in 2002 hunting for WWE figures in KB Toys and stumbling across Marvel Legends wave one. I was blown away. I scooped them and haven't looked back. 20 years later still collecting Legends as well as other lines but I will say after receive Galactus I be winding down.
I still have the OG Cap in my display, I want the new version and I'll probably store the old guy somewhere special to protect him but he's still a fine comic version when posed. I think the originals looked awkward in neutral but once you had them on a shelf they looked great.
Loved this video! It really brought back a lot of great memories! I wish Hasbro and Marvel will do more of the 20th anniversary figures and bring back the bases! I have no problem paying more money for a sweet base for my Legends! Keep up the great work Toy Shiz!
Great video Shiz. Love your content. I'm really excited about these 20th anniversary figures reuse or not, so much nostalgia. I always thought my Iron Man base was a building too like some stylized miniature base till I finally was replacing the poor old fella in my collection and I was like holy crap its a dang satellite.
I grabbed Toad the first time I saw them. Only other choice was Cap that day. Took me about a month to track down the rest. I never did open that Toad. It’s a shame the only other version we’ve gotten since was the movie version. (And X-Evo?) I was skeptical when they reused IM for Magneto, then again for Rhodey. WtF, ToyBiz? 😂😂 And yeah, I wouldn’t mind getting the occasional “base wave” instead of a BAF, these days. At least DST *tried* to let us build a Danger Room, but the last gasp from ToyBiz was the X-Evo line. 😢
Bro No joke. We had it lucky when Marvel legends started. We didn't have to worry about 60 figures coming out at a time. We had the opportunity to collect them all.
The OG Cap came with actual working slings for holding his shield along with the cip!😱🔥...I'm waiting for the 20th anniversary one and am SUPER DISAPPOINTED Hasbro did not do this!😑😑😑😑😑
My dad was so disappointed when I shunned the wrestling figures in favour of these figures. I got mine from a store called Woolworths in the UK. I only picked up captain America and Ironman as I'd just started to read marvel comics a couple years before coming off the animated shows. I was 10 so girls had started to peek my interest but I'd still ditch them to watch Power Rangers and DBZ. To me even though its dated now the captain America will always be one of my favourite of all time that head sculpt is still pure fire.
Thank you for this look back, sir! I remember picking these up. I actually started with the Spider-Man Classics red and blue and black suit figures. Will you be reviewing the the 20th anniversary figures? Curious to hear what hour think. I’ve seen some mixed reviews.

Awesome, ty. I had all three except for Toad… just no personal interest. I gave a bunch of mine away to a Mom years ago for a kid’s Christmas… I gave him the Face Off Hulk (was never a fan of it really, hated the hands and lack of articulation). I was never able to find the Toad Figure. I have duplicates of the other 3 figures with 3 still in their packages. I have quite a few of the old Toy Biz figures in their original packages. I have all the figures to make another Galactus. I wish I had enough to build the Sentinel as mine fell off my shelf and shattered beyond repair. I was crushed! 😂🤣😂🤣😂 Win some lose some.

I have the Captain America figure in the regular release and the Golden Trimmed edition. I actually somehow got three of them. Two normal releases and one with the Gold trim. I opened one of them and it still stands tall in my display over a decade later. Now I also collect Hasblow, and I do like their releases, well some of them. Their distribution SUCKS THOUGH! Also their BAF series is crap in that they make you buy figures you couldn't care less about in order to get your BAF! Hasbro's Spider-Man classic line was incredible! BUT nobody ever had them. Stores here got one case if that, and they never made the shelves. X-Men as well. Gamestop took pre-orders for Beast. I gave them my cash💸💰🤑, but on the release date? Gamestop said we didn't get enough to fill the pre-orders? Call back in a month. I did. They didn't! I never saw the Beast figure OR MY CASH?!💸💰🤑 So my comments for Hasblow are less than perfect. Toy Biz Legends never had this issue. But they also gave more items, better accessories, and they seemed to CARE!
No doubt..Toybiz Legends blows out Hasbro one's still to this day with all the sculpts and articulation going on..loads of accessories cool detailed base..comic book. Nuff said.
The only Toys I want from the new Hasbro Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary line are the new Ironman, Captain America and Hulk excluding Toad since he's not part of the avengers but The God of Thunder Himself Thor who should have been in the series one wave than a x men type character like that slime bogger himself Pal!
I'm glad I stopped collecting at that time. The initial line was a ugly mess. Still want to kick myself sometimes because I didn't grab the sentinel. The only one from that era I still held onto was the stealth wolverine. I thought the scale was odd. But now it's my preferred scale for my collection.😝😄👍
Why am I doing this to myself, all of a sudden I want to buy this wave with the 0 dollars I have IT’S NOT FAIR THAT I WAS BORN TOO LATE TO BUY THESE CHEAP
It's obvious how far we've come... BUT... I still don't understand. All the way back from Spider-man Classics, which I had, you had an ab swivel, the LEGS would easily do the splits... I'm not talking about the finger and toe articulation, but even figures like Cap could do the splits all the way, easily, IM got close. So WHY did we have to go through years of terrible, ugly ball hip joints that looked terrible and never worked quite right? Even today we're barely now starting to make figures that can casually do the splits, and not all of them can, only those who have a newish buck and for whom that kind of flexibility is character appropriate. Maybe I'm a noob, I've only been collecting for 3 years now but I just don't get it.
I must say I was never 100% on board with ToyBiz's Legends..... Their "anatomy" was super wonky and the joints were super loose, so dynamic posing was out of the question.... They also went a bit overboard with articulation so they looked like marionettes..... I did however praised their paint applications.... Even male characters had painted on lips..... they also made unique sculpts for a lot of the characters.... I must say I collected SOTA's Street Fighter figures instead during this period....
Those sota figs came out years after smc/ml set the standard for mass market toys. Toybiz figures are far from perfect bit there was nothing like them in North America at the time.
Idk if people are nostalgia blind but I’ll never understand the “toy biz figs we’re so much better” like how do you look at them and think they look better, the limbs are all out of scale and weird, the wash is just kinda random and just dirty looking, maybe some figs looked good like fin fang foom or dragon man but overall just didn’t look good
Thanks for the shout out sir! The Toad was going to be a comic book two pack for the Xmen movie. You would get the movie toy and a comic book version. 6.99? For all that? God damn you inflation.

Idk if people are nostalgia blind but I’ll never understand the “toy biz figs we’re so much better” like how do you look at them and think they look better, the limbs are all out of scale and weird, the wash is just kinda random and just dirty looking, maybe some figs looked good like fin fang foom or dragon man but overall just didn’t look good
But they were just so much better
more paint, more articulation but way less charm than the simpler Toybiz Marvel figures
Back in the day when they put effort into the figures
