How George Carlin’s '7 Words' Caused a Landmark Supreme Court Decision
Вставка

- For decades, George Carlin was one of the most original and popular comedians to take the stage. His “Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV” routine is often hailed as a masterpiece of standup comedy and helped him get the title of one of the best standup comedians; it took society’s taboos and hangups to task while being flat-out hilarious. Carlin’s seven words are so notoriously profane they got tangled up in a court case, which took on the FCC’s power of censorship and landed in front of the Supreme Court.

It was a disservice to censor the words in question in the video.
I've listened to George Carlin's 7 Words routine since he first performed it. However, I just found it funnier hearing Jon Meecham using profanity. Bravo. He should do it more often. His diction adds a certain class to them.
I think You need to upload a uncencored version of this.
I was going to subscribe but your censorship made me change my mind.
Man I glad you made this video. Thanks you so much. Your my hero. Okay the reason I am so grateful was because I already know this history, but I learned a lot of new facts and details. Before seeing your video I only knew a short version of this. Now I know the full story. So anyway back in 2013, when I explain what I knew back then to my family at dinner. My twin brother did not believe me and he (my twin brother is very arrogant and so meanly sarcastic) responded with such arrogance, like he was saying their was no way something like this would happened because of the first amendment. We can say what ever we wanted on the airwaves and he sarcastically said to me: “You know what, your exactly right James, your the smartest people in the whole world”.
Those insults really affect me emotionally, man I was crying like a baby because I spend a lot of time learning, studying and reading this very interesting and shocking history only just end up being insulted by his arrogant asshole. So seeing your video today proves what I learned back in 2013 was not false, it was true. Thank you so much
This man definitely is a legend in comedy. A lot of his bits where just words of wisdom just told on a very funny way.
Exactly!
And now we have a whole new list of seven words. And we have a whole new generation if uptight, self-righteous virtue signalers.

The irony is, those seven words still end up being censored on youtube.
The fact of the matter is that as the country has drifted further and further into the right wing, becoming more and more economically anarchistic, more and more moral authoritarians have realized that the deeper you descend into the unregulated, undemocratic private market, the less state law applies to you. Including the constitution and supreme court.
Libertarians and most other right wing ideologues cry for smaller government because the industries that manufacture their consent are part of a _big club_ that wants more power, less restrictions on how they can use it, and less responsibility for their actions.
That _big club,_ is the one you ain't in. They're not stupid, but the people they brainwash are.

@@YourIdeologyIsDelusional I agree with a lot what you said, except the bit where you blame this on librarians. I'm not a librarian, but I I can tell you for a fact that a librarian government would not be out for as much control as our current one is. Ironically, still a standard law practice or not, we're living in a world where the kind of content and social interaction people consume on a daily basis makes the supreme court's decision on this matter completely irrelevant. Almost everyone in first world countries consume their media almost entirely on the internet, from the younger generation that consumes independently produced social media content almost every minute of every day, to the older generation now replacing Television in large part by subscription based services like Netflix that are not bound by the regulations of the FCC.
When Carlin wrote and performed this bit there was not a single avenue of media in American that people could consume without the FCC or similar censorship board looking at it first, now you are living in a world where easily 95% of the media you consume the FCC has absolutely no control over whatsoever.
Lenny Bruce and George Carlin would be proud.
But the media are now more powerful and corrupt than the FCC ever were ...... it's turning into an Orwellian dystopian nightmare....... although alternative platforms are springing up to counter that.....Rumble, Parler and so on

I bought the album, my parents listened and laughed so hard they almost had tears in their eyes. Of course, my parents and I went to see Blazing Saddles in the theater when it first came out and my dad thought Month Python and the Holy Grail was one of the funniest movies he ever saw so one can see they were a bit ahead of their time in such thinking. Also, they were big fans of Lenny Bruce, I found out later.
Anyhow, here’s to you, George, and thank you for helping us learn to relax and just let some things flow.
the guy was both a comedian and a philosopher. he is one of my favourite comedians of all time.
I remember being a teenager and playing The Seven Dirty Words on LP for the first time. My friends and I were on the floor laughing.
"... Increased by 69%..."
Me: Nice.
Highly recommend any of his stand-up! Best in the biz! May he rest in peace.
R.I.P. George. He was the Best and still has never been outdated. As now in 2020 with covid-19 looming all around us, He did totally relevant routines warning us of such a thing. 👍
The FCC won't let me be or let me be me so let me see
Try to shut me down on MTV but it feels so empty without me
Little hellions kids feeling rebellious
Embarrassed, their parents still listen to Elvis
They start feeling like prisoners helpless
'Til someone comes along on a mission and yells "bitch"
A visionary, vision is scary, could start a revolution, polluting the airwaves, a rebel. So just let me revel and bask in the fact that I got everyone kissin my ass

They're excerpts from the work of an up and coming rapper called Eminem. Tipped for stardom, apparently.
my FAVORITE comedian, when i saw this on my feed i immediately clicked
Yes got to see him 6 Times and Every time I left a show I could not wait to go back
The second you read the list, you earned my like. Proud of you!
50 years later we have new words you're not allowed to say
Like him n her n it lol
I stopped watching the second it became obvious those seven words are censored in this video. George Carlin would have had a field day with the prudish hypocrisy and squeamishness of that.
You can do it just not on youtube. You can but youll risk losing sponsorship
@@fumothfan9 Then they shouldn't be covering Carlin. If he were alive today and saw this shit, he'd ream them for profiting off of his legacy while practicing things antithetical to his message.
The man risked jail and fines for making his statements, fuck sponsorships, fuck monetization, fuck censorship, all of that fits into the category of capitalist exploitation of our sensibilities he argued against for years.
Bowing down to corporate masters and making their jobs easy by making controversy unprofitable and making things sterile and prudish. Excitement and experimentation are difficult, so fuck it, give everything soft edges so they don't have to work harder to entertain an audience. Appeal to the lowest common denominator, simply because it makes more money rather than entertaining you and providing useful truth you can apply practically. Just sit there and be placated by non-offensive, sterile, garbage.
it's disgusting.
I agree 100%
I think Carlin would understand why the words are censored on UA-cam. Just because it shouldn't be illegal to say certain words doesn't mean that you should say anything you want. There are consequences to verbalizations that free speakers may want to avoid. Freedom of speech is a trade-off.
In society, we trade our freedoms for survival--to work, to make money, to take that money to a grocery store, and trade it for food. The alternative is to live outside of society and shout obscenities at the trees while convincing yourself you live in total freedom. The reality is that you must be quiet so the animals you need to hunt for food aren't scared away. Self-censorship is a necessary human reality.
Thinking about why we make these trade-offs of our freedom for our survival is the key to a rational life. Carlin had a way of waking people up to rational thought. It was never really about saying bad words in public.
In other words, swearing is no longer as bad, but it can still cost you your paycheque in certain situations. Such as needing to be advertiser friendly on a social media platform.
I still bust out laughing when I hear him say the words and the way he says them 🤣
