I have seen articles about them thinking of doing this with Ukraine. Since Russia is threatening countries that deliver arms to Ukraine, some are demanding Ukraine transport the equipment themselves, specifically the highly controversial fighter planes they were talking about giving Ukraine. They were talking about setting up an airport on the border to land the planes at and then Ukraine can transport them over the border similar to Canada in WW2.

The issue with the plane swap is that the Polish planes are equipped differently than the Ukrainian planes, and so while the model number may be the same, the Ukrainian pilots would need extensive training to use them.
The Polish planes have totally different electronics and weapons systems, and so while a Ukrainian pilot may be able to fly the plane just as well, if they have never used the advanced targeting systems and comms gear, they won't be very useful in battle.

Quick correction.America did not declare war with Germany. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour th US declared war on Japan, and as an alliance existed between Germany and Japan, Germany was obliged to support Japan and thus declared war on the United States.

There was no such alliance between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany.
Rather, Adolf had an emotional moment -- and just did what came to him.
Japan proceeded to stiff Adolf at every turn -- almost -- as when he begged them to attack Siberia -- or send the IJN into the Indian Ocean.
Both actions would've had world shaking impacts.

@@davidhimmelsbach557 Take a look at the Tripartite Pact AKA The Berlin Pact. An agreement between Germany, Italy & Japan signed in Berlin Sept 27th 1940.
It was a Military Alliance which was joined later by, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia & the Independent state of Croatia as well as Slovakia in that order.
This alliance became known as the Axis Powers.

    • @randomobserver8168
      @randomobserver8168 2 роки тому +7

Germany declared war because Hitler saw what he foolishly thought an opportunity. The Tripartite Pact did not oblige any of its members to go to war unless another member were attacked by a party they were not already at war with, NOT if the member attacked someone else. Germany would have been obliged to assist with all political, economic and military means if the US had attacked Japan. Technically, Japan would have been obliged to assist Germany if the USSR had attacked it. I'm not so sure Japan would have lived up to that commitment the way Germany did. That's a compliment to Japan, whose strategy was otherwise pretty dumb.
Since Germany was the aggressor against Russia, and Japan the aggressor against the US, the Tripartite Pact only applied as far as its general clauses about who had which spheres of influence. That the Germans and Japanese made an extremely half-baked attempt to fight a common war was gravy, not the main course.
Phrasing treaties like that, creating opt outs if a party were the aggressor, was a common way to keep one's commitments to one's allies under control and retain some discretion. Pre WW1, too. Technically Germany had to come to Austria's aid because the Russians had mobilized against Austria, they did NOT have to assist Austria's invasion of Serbia.
Evasive phrases like "political, economic and military means" are common too. Surprising how often "all military means" can be interpreted as military assistance short of war. Though the Tripartite Pact's phrasing is stronger than some.

There is a big disconnect between the people who are worried about treaties, and those shooting at whatever, just because they can. Like what they were doing in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The people doing it didn't realize that it would probably kill the troops they sent in. They just saw a defensible position where the Ukrainians wouldn't willingly go to.
I'd fully expect them to continue doing bad things. Eventually the rest of the world will force them to stop. They're just delaying, because of the whole World War 3 thing.

For a lot of people, especially people who have never been there, the flags are interchangeable. Honestly, I see the UK flag used a lot to mean England. Usually, the correct Scottish and Irish flags are used for those, as people know that they're separate countries. And to international people, the flag of Wales may as well not even exist. They don't realize they're all part of the UK. They also see all of the British Isles as being "England".
Don't worry, it isn't even just that part of the world. They'd not even know the Caribbean islands as anything other than a cruise ship and vacation destination.
I'm assuming that you even noticed and pointed it out, you're in England, or somewhere near by. My perspective is being from the US, but listening to people all over the world. So they'd take the propeller off, carry it across the border separately from the airplane that was dragged by a tractor or horses, then reinstall the propeller. Seems like a lot of work though, I'd think by the same logic you could carry the keys (if WWII military aircraft used such) separately from the aircraft - it won't fly without them (unless you hotwire it but we'll ignore that) so it wouldn't be a "complete aircraft."

The fact of the matter is, it started at different times for different countries, so it's no more stupid to say it started, from an American perspective, on Dec 7th 1941, as it would be to say that, from a Chinese perspective, it started in 1937, or 1914 from a German perspective.

It's an approach that blends a bit of anthropology in with the history. The part I disagree with completely though is your end date, because Japan wasn't defeated until 4 months after Germany. Houlton, ME, had a similar arrangement. Planes would be flown into Houlton and towed across the border into Canada via tractor.
Houlton also had a POW camp in WWII as well.

A couple of mistakes for the inevitable corrections video:
Repeated mentions of England while using the flag of the entire UK, making it unclear if you are referring to the sovereign nation or the constituent country.
Joking about Canada becoming the 51st state in the US at a time when there were only 48 states.

It's not a mistake, until late in the 20th century it was normal to just say England, everyone knew what was meant, and so the narration uses the historically accurate term.

0:11 I flew out from Newark after being exhausted from a school trip on dc and New York. The flight got delayed by 3 hours and we flew out at 3 in the morning, I arrived at home in the morning and got no sleep. On top of that, school started tomorrow. So yeah, I never went to Newark ever again and I 100% agree Newark sucks.

I've been to the International Peace Garden and when looking at the map, I wondered why the airport was doing that. Thanks for the answer! Also, rather ironic they did this at a place called the "International Peace Garden" (although the international peace being referenced is that between the US and Canada, the point still stands).

Another slightly less well-known reason the US didn't get involved was the supporters and members of the party from Germany in the 30s. Like the Madison Square Garden rally.

Another reason was the atrocities committed by the nazi party were not really discovered until the late 30s or early 40s. Concentration camps were not internationally known and mostly kept in-house on a need to know basis. Thus the nazis were seen more as power-hungry guys than the monsters they were made out to be since then. This was also a critical turning point leading to America wanting to go to war with germany if i remember correctly

Avey Field (WA/BC) and Piney Pinecreek (MN/MAN) are the only airports that still cross the border, and only Piney Pinecreek seems to be some place where you could really land and then choose which country to enter. At Avey Field, the likely spot where the planes were moved into Canada has been blocked off The Canadian side of Coutts/Ross airport seems to survive as lines of trees where the taxiways and apron used to be, but the American side has been plowed flat. A more accurate title for this video is "Why so many Airport Runways used to cross the US-Canada Border."
