I Upgraded My Motherboard and CPU Without Reinstalling Windows...Again!!!

- In this video I upgrade my AMD 5900x and MSI X570 motherboard with AM4 socket to a new 7800X3D and GigaByte B650 motherboard (AM5 socket) without re-installing Windows. This is the third motherboard/cpu setup on this original Windows 10 installation. If your hesitant about trying, hopefully this video will give you some encouragement.

Thanks VERY MUCH! I saw the first video and this one, and, in short, was also successful! I had several other issues after the MB change before completing my Win11 upgrade, but it has been successful. These videos really helped begin the process. Thanks!
Hm. Didn't work on two subsequent computers. One difference these two had over the one that did work was that they had SSDs (because of format type?). Anyway, I'm done, and glad it's over with. Thx again.

I just bought new CPU and Motherboard and was afraid that i need to erase everything.
I tried and all my drivers are conflicting with my old ones so I think I need to do a fresh install. I can’t even apply the new drivers for new board via usb. Especially after I flashed the bios.
I upgraded from am4 to am5 and my pc boots and says i have 2 drives, but neither are Bootable im not sure whats going on?

I currently have an MSI AMD B450 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 2600 and an Nvidia GeForce 1650 super graphics card. I'm really wanting to upgrade to the MSI AMD B550, Ryzen 5 5600x, and an MSI RTX 3060. Since I currently use windows 10, would this mean I can simply plug my existing hard drives into the upgraded motherboard, processor, and graphics card and have no issues since they're both AM4?
Chances are very good that it would work just fine. Backup anything that you can’t afford to lose, just to be safe.
So I wanna go from my gigabyte b450m s2h to gigabyte aorus b550 ax v2. I should just install the new mobo and boot up? I also probably need to update the bios on the mobo using a flash drive and press the q flash button. Do you think it will work fine? Also if it would require a windows clean installation what exactly would indicate that and how would I do it? I hope I’m not annoying lol
You should be able to just swap the motherboard and boot. Before you do, back up everything. Also, have a copy of Windows installer on a bootable USB. If you're not familiar with this, google it and follow the tutorial on Microsoft's website. You'll only need this if the motherboard swap doesn't work off your current Windows installation which is unlikely, but better to be prepared. Unless you need to update Bios to work with your cpu/ram, I wouldn't do the update until after the new motherboard is installed and everything is up and running.
So, I have a Gigabyte Gaming B8-CF motherboard, had it for a good long while. And I'm not sure where to even begin the upgrade for it. Had a friend help me a little and it seems like everything I can upgrade to is only compatible with DDR5 (Only have DDR4) and a higher end cpu I don't have. (Currently have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz).
Any way you could offer some advice? Would definitely help a ton, if not that's fine I can figure it out eventually :)
Ok, so I've been away from Intel for a few generations so maybe someone else can chime in and add to my info.
I don't know what you currently have for a cpu, but if you wanted to stay with your motherboard and ram, it looks like the fastest supported cpu is an i7-7700k which you can get used on ebay for about $100. Just drop it in and go. Sometimes manufacturers release BIOS versions that support more than the original list of cpus. You could look into this and see if the motherboard could support a more current cpu.
The latest Intel motherboards use socket LGA 1700 and you should be able to find many that support DDR4. So technically, you could buy a new Intel motherboard and cpu, then use your current DDR4 memory.
As for AMD, if you got to the latest AMD platform, the motherboards use socket AM5 and they only support DDR5 so you'd be buying all new motherboard, cpu and ram. But, you can still buy brand new previous generation AM4 motherboards and cpus that support your current DDR4 memory. Those cpus are still very fast even though they're a generation old.

I have gigabyte b250m gaming 3 and intel i5 6500 and im upgrading to aprus b550m elite and ryzen 5 5600x rn i dont have a activation key and i have that watermark but before i swap out everything im gonna buy a key.. is there going to be any problem when i swap like files/data lost? Im not changing my ssd tho..
Backup everything and then give it a try. Most people have had no problem upgrading their motherboard and cpu without reinstalling Windows.

Those are fantastic. I have mine and sadly I don’t use it anymore. The volume knob crackles so loud. I used the spray cleaner and a few weeks crackling again.
Good eye! Yup, still surprises me how good they sound so many years later! I also have the volume knob issue, but if you don't use it, no crackles lol. I just have the Logitech's volume set high and use the Windows system volume to change volume. Easy to do with the volume adjustment knob built into my Corsair keyboard. You really need to hook them back up!
DO you actually know how much performance is left on the table vs complete clean install? Can you test it with an external Windows 2 Go Live Install maybe? would be interesting to know.
Interesting idea. Maybe a subject for another video? To get a true baseline, I'd also have to do a fresh install to compare against W2G...hmmm

This is just what I was trying to find, seen so many split opinions of it and nothing solid. This is pretty much irrefutable proof that on the same installation it does work. I'm doing a similar upgrade, both mobo and CPU(MSI x470 Gaming Plus Max, and Ryzen 7 2700x), to the am5 platform(MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi, and Ryzen 7 7700x), same Windows 10 installation(Win10 home). Although I might turn off secure boot and TPM before making the switch, would turning those off matter or not really?
EDIT: Did the change recently a couple weeks ago. No reinstall of windows required. No issues also. What did surprise me is that I no longer had to call microsoft to get a new license
What did you do? Mine wont work and I've always had painless upgrades
@@NovaDoll Before the swap, I turned off secure boot and TPM, I haven't found answer regarding those so I turned them off to be sure, since the mobo and CPU had them on by default.
Once I started gutting the PC, I just swapped the two out, put them in and made sure everything is in where it needs to go, and it booted just fine.

@@NovaDoll If you're hard drive is not formatted to GPT and is on MBR, that *may* be what's causing it, and if so would require a reinstall if I'm not mistaken unless you formatted it to gpt beforehand. Since modern mobos are on UEFI now instead of Legacy/CSM
A good method for motherboard switch, is to go into safe mode, uninstall and delete all drivers related to motherboard. boot into safe mode after motherboard switch to install new mobo drivers. should work. I have upgraded my windows 3 times and from intel to amd.
Thanks. I agree, if it's crucial that you have a success, using Safe mode to prevent Windows from loading drivers would reduce risk of conflicts with the new install. Still though, there is a lot of empirical evidence that it's not necessary.
Whats so special about this? Most tech channels use the same windows install on the same SSD to test each of their new builds. So the same system is probs used on dozens of different builds every month or so, and it always works. Don't see no reason why it shouldn't work, really. It always worked for me.
From what I've been reading, it's quite a divisive mindset on "Yes you absolutely should" to "No you don't need to"
I can't get mine to boot at all. I'm so frustrated. I have always taken my drive with me and never needed to do anything crazy since 2015. I have even cloned my drive and can't get it to boot. Any advice. I'm going from AM4 to AM5. Old NVME works fine on current computer.
Can you get into BIOS? Does BIOS see the boot drive?
I have the same issue. mine boots straight to bios says my drive is there but not Bootable
@@PIFDIY Yes. Had to rebuilt my EFI
@@NovaDoll Could be something wrong with the drive's MBR. If you can boot into Window's recovery, you should be able to repair it. Might have to Google this for information on how to fix MBR.

I took my SSD from my old Alienware and put it in my new rebuilt pc and no issues

No, it should run just fine.
That's a much easier upgrade. You shouldn't have a problem with it.

Dont think much of the Gigabyte B650 gaming motherboard, we had nothing but bother with them and DDR5 ram. had to RMA 3 in a row. Gave up and went with Asus

Never upgraded your computers cpu or motherboard I see. Lets just say Microsoft thinks you should have to buy another license if you do and the rest of the world does not.
@@danielmurray1805 I have multiple times, its very common, the licences are now all digitalised, so its assigned to your Microsoft account not the PC
There was no rule in the book that said one has to...reinstall windows with new hardware.
Unfortunately... I've seen a lot of ranging from "You absolutely should" to "No you don't need to"
@@raevenent751 I think it's a good blanket advice statement. Not reinstalling windows with a mobo/cpu swap CAN lead to issues. Reinstalling windows immediately is often relatively convenient, and very rarely detrimental. If you know what you are doing, solving said issues without reinstalling windows is often possible, and reinstalling windows at a later date is always an option. That being said I just did the same upgrade as this video without reinstalling windows (5900x b550 -> 7800x3d b650) so :/.
I don't think it's harmful advice, or even wrong, it's just a blanket statement that has exceptions.

Thinking about it before, I think it's because most modern mobos are on UEFI, and if you had a hard drive on MBR then that's probably when a reinstall of windows will be required since UEFI requires the hard drive to be on GPT
@@raevenent751 switching from 7950x3d to 7800x3d seems to cause a fair bit of issues though. Hard to say what is or isn't the issue.
