    For those too young to remember, Bobby Darin was the highest paid, most celebrated nightclub performer of his era. He was a combination of Frank Sinatra & Ray Charles, but with a suave and cool that was uniquely Darin. He had a genius IQ and unsurpassed wit and charm. Both Sammy Davis, Jr. and Wayne Newton called him "the greatest nightclub singer in the business." Had he lived, he would have been an icon to four generations of fans---his appeal was that all-encompassing. RIP to a legend.

    Sandra Dee is one of the most beautiful actress in Hollywood. She was a good actress too. She had a very difficult childhood and suffered a lot because of that experience. All and all. She raised a good son. I still watch her old movies. So relaxing. Thank you Dodd for honoring your parents.

    I am reading Dodd's book on his parents "Dream Lovers". I know this video was about 7 years ago...his beautiful daughters are more grown, and more years have passed, but this is one sensitive and loving son and obviously loving father. Dodd, you have also been a privilege to know through the history of your parents lives that you have compassionately woven into your world to continue to share with us. Good luck in all your endeavors if you ever read this comment:) and many blessings to your family:)

      Thank-you Diane, Angela & Jill for your recommendation on Dodd’s book! I so appreciate your telling me( all of us) about his book “Dream Lovers”, based on his parents. I was totally unaware of Dodd’s book so I sincerely appreciate all of your comments! I absolutely am going to run out & get it & thank-you all for recommending it. On another blog/site showcasing Bobby Darin it had a play entitle “BEYOND THE SEA”, that had opened(w/ Coronavirus it may have sadly closed by now) that everyone was talking about. It is on UTUBE & Dodd opened the play, the first night. He was recommending the play on stage & I am now wondering if the play is based on his book, even though it is a different name. They were talking about this movie so much & so many comments recommending it, that I watched the movie today with my husband. I definitely will buy Dodd’s book “DREAM LOVERS” this week & can’t wait to read it! Thanks again for telling us all about Dodd’s book!🥰

    Bobby Darin won numerous Grammy awards, Golden Globe awards, Cannes Film Festival Awards; was nominated for an Academy Award. He is a member of ASCAP Hall of Fame, the R&R Hall of Fame; has stars on the Las Vegas and Hollywood Walks of Fame. He mastered rhythm and blues, rock, folk, jazz, blues, C&W, etc., and had hits in each of those musical genres. No other singer before or since has accomplished this feat. Now he finally got his Lifetime Achievement Award. It's about time.

      Well said. Even after all these years, it saddens me that Bobby, and Sandra's life was heavy-ladened with such sadness and sorrow. But God has blessed them with such a loving family. Thank you, Dod, for keeping the Dream of your Dad alive in the hearts of those who knew him, and those who will.

      I so agree with you SoothingChime15....Bobby was EXTREMELY good looking! I can watch his Dream Lover video all day long - the confidence and "swagger" he has on that stage, oh my gosh!!!! And that thing that he does with his shoulders and hands - he simply oozes appeal!!! The way he carried himself made him all the more attractive! And, I have to add too that I just love Dodd. I have seen him in a couple of interviews now and how proud Bobby and Sandra can be of this fine man .... I realize that we are seeing mere seconds of his life, but he truly comes across as such a kind, gentle, and humble man! You see so many Hollywood/show biz "kids" who either take advantage of who their parents are by trying to "cash in" on their fame; or, you see them excusing their own embarrassingly messed up behavior because of all that went wrong in their parents' lives - Dodd appears to have done neither of these .... rather, he appears to love both of his parents very deeply - in spite of their flaws and shortcomings - and he shows that love with such great respect and pride. I really admire that about him and how openly loving he is towards both Bobby and Sandra. What a wonderful son they have!

      I soooo agree with you Mosaic that I too, disagreed with Dodd, concerning his “father’s looks! “It was the “only “thing I disagreed with ( what a great son Dodd is!)but was shocked when Dodd said that in his speech! I thought “Is Dodd kidding??”🤣I thought Bobby Darin was handsome, sexy, full of personality & just downright gorgeous! He was so charismatic & literally lite up the stage when he walked on it. He was so savue, sophisticated just downright “cool!” Loved the way he dressed & remember thinking how handsome I thought he was as a little girl, looking at my mother’s movie magazines w/ Bobby & Sandy featured on every other page, back then! Ha! He was such a handsome guy & he & Sandra made an incredible looking couple! Bobby Darin was most definitely”good looking”, to say the very least!🤣

    Alexia are absolutely beautiful children!!! They would be so proud, if they were both alive today, to see the beautiful son & his family, that are left to carry on the touching legend that “was” Sandra & Bobby! Listening to Dodd give such a moving tribute to his parents that he obviously loved so much is heartwarming! Dodd’s father would be so proud of the moving tribute & deep love Dodd so eloquently spoke of, in his speech honoring his father! May God Bless Todd & his beautiful family! 🥰

    I have seen this a few times now and each time it touches my heart and soul deep. Dodd Darin is truly the loving son of his parents Bobby Darin and Sandra See. Dodd gave the most honest and touching tribute to both of his parents, especially his Dad. Seeing Dodd sharing this awesome moment with his beautiful daughters is something priceless that they shall never forget, truly a ' Darin History Moment' indeed. Of all the awards that Bobby Darin was awarded over the many years, even since his passing this is the most honoured one of all. No one has ever come anywhere near close to Bobby Darin's brilliance in this industry, he stands out the most accomplished of all singers / entertainers of all time. Dodd is right, "It is not the length of time a man lives but the legacy that he leaves behind him. Bobby Darin achieved this and how. An extremely honoured award long over due but all the sweeter for Dodd Darin and his family to treasure. RIP BOBBY YOUR THE TRUE LEGEND OF ALL TIME !!!!

    • @hategreed1
      @hategreed1 7 років тому +18

      Frank Sinatra was a great singer and a fine actor. However, Bobby was both of those, Frank's equal or better. Bobby was much more at ease as a performer, and better at making the audience forget anything but his amazing singing and dancing and musicianship. Sinatra was ofen uncomfortable and awkward. I personally always feel uncomfortable watching Frank, I have empathy for his discomfort. But Bobby was a COMPOSER and a virtuoso musician (five different instruments, performance mastery). Frank was neither of those. Bobby was also a gifted impressionist, and gifted with accents. Frank was not. Really no comparison of their talents.

    • @bryanismyname7583
      @bryanismyname7583 7 років тому +9

      There are a number of reasons why Sinatra was considered to be the top singer, even by many musicians and singers. There was his unique phrasing ability and his sense of how the music should feel and sound. Bobby Darin no doubt was one of his talented successors, but he was at least partly influenced him (as son Dodd acknowledges), as he did for many in the generations that came after. What Darin had that Sinatra may not quite have had (though much had to do with the desire to do so) was the ability to effortlessly go from music genre to music genre successfully. Sinatra didn't like rock & roll so he rarely ventured outside the standards, but if he had wanted to I'm sure he could have done it well. Anyhow, you can enjoy and admire both performers without putting one down.

    This is just my personal view, but I didn't see the point of mentioning the name of the person who didn't want Kirby as an opening act. What's the point? The story could have been told without mentioning anyone's name. The person was simply representing policy anyway. The story could have favored his dad without mentioning names.
    Darin in fact was an extraordinary talent. "Mack the Knife" must surely rank among the great pop records of the 20th century. He was also a gifted composer and, even more than Dylan, changed personas. His other talents included impressionist skills and acting, as his son also said. I thought his later folk-styled songs were as good or even better than his earlier pop songs, though, like Anka and the Everly Bros. he was identified too much with the pre-Beatle era. Frankly, to my mind at least, Paul Anka is a far greater song composer than Paul McCartney, but you couldn't tell that to the Beatle generation . And Darin was, to my mind, more original than Dylan. But you could never tell that to a Dylan generation.

      Mentioning The Names Of Discriminatory Power Players " Is " Still Important. Not " Every " Club Was Blocking African Americans. I've Read That The Man Mentioned Had A " Personal " Bias..& That Is Why His Name Was Included. Everything Else You Said Is " Right-On-The-Money. Darin...Should Be Remember..As One Of The Greats !!!

      I agree with you, James. I mean, first of all, it's pretty clear that Dodd didn't mention names with the intention of hurting anyone; and certainly, the incident happened long enough ago, why would it even matter that Dodd said the person's name? He was simply sharing a heart-felt story about Bobby that would help convey the type of man he was - a story that obviously impacted Dodd as well in some way. I personally was very touched to learn that Bobby even cared about such things, and really never thought a thing about the names of the people - just that Bobby fought like that for someone else. It is confusing to me why some are bothered by such things (like Dodd mentioning a name) when really, that was so insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

      Mentioning the name meant nothing more than another part of his dafs story. There eere people wirh those views. And then there was Bobby Darin and people like him who used his position to make a change. Thankfully he did. That's the importance of the story.

    2010?!?!? It took that outrageously long to recognize BD's Lifetime Achievement? WTF?
    And not during the prime-time televised Big Show Grammies. Boy, the rigged system sure didn't want the stars they invested in (Sinatra, Bennett, Dino, Martino) to have competition, did they? CRAPitalism STINKS.

      I agree too! It infuriated me that this “tribute”(?????) was not given during the actual GRAMMIES!” What kind of “tribute” is that? Let them cut out some of their “moronic jokes”, that aren’t very funny anyway & drop a commercial & then they will have enough time! They need to properly respect and honor an entertainer that was absolutely extraordinary, never mind this “side bar”, back room quasi tribute! I realize this was done a few yrs ago but I don’t care! “THIS AWARD/TRIBUTE NEEDS TO BE RESCHEDULED & REDONE, SHOWING PROPER RESPECT TO BOBBY DARIN DURING THE “GRAMMY’S” MAIN SHOW & not as a lack luster after thought, pushed in the background! I realize the actual award was already given & that is unimportant. Honoring this incredible man, showing his memory the proper respect it deserves needs to be redone on prime time & I for one, plan on sending a letter in to the voting body & as many addresses as I can find, as well as personally calling them, to tell them how I feel! Bobby Darin deserves better!🥰
