Great video guys. If a .308 won't go through, I know a .22lr won't either. However, to quote a good friend of mine "A .22lr will kill the crap out of you".
Scott Boss There are dead people who would disagree. Yeah, a .22 won't do the same massive damage over a large area as a high caliber round will do, but a .22 will penetrate significantly into a body that it will reach vital organs. It's all about shot placement. One good hit with a .22 is better than 7 misses with a .44. Not that anybody would recommend a .22 for self defense over a .44, but I'm just saying that it's not complete crap.
As an ex-Corrections officer for the Commonwealth of VA, I wish they'd used this. I was always a little worried when doing a transfer or a hospital run with level III-A soft armor. I know that gang members favor the 7.62x39, usually in an AK or SKS platform. I was also a steel-worker and I know how abrasion resistant AR-500 and AR-550 are. Pretty incredible steel, and not terribly heavy.
Something that's not really mentioned in this review is that armor can be a great thing to have if you're just out plinking with firearms. If an accident does happen, or if there's a failure with your firearm, you have a little added protection beyond some safety glasses.
Great vid guys! One thing that wasn't mentioned as far as civilian use is just general protection when recreational shooting. Say you go out to shoot in the woods with some friends and a new shooter comes with. If they accidentally discharge a round and someone gets hit, body armor could be the mitigating factor between living (though a little sore and bruised) and trying to rush a friend to the ER from the middle of nowhere and them bleeding out on the way. Just thought I'd give it a mention... Oh, and one of these days I'm going to have to make the drive out to Moss (West Georgia, here). I've enjoyed all the videos and info, and Eric, Barry (RIP) and Chad just seem like a good bunch of guys.
I bought the AR500 plates and could not be happier! They are heavier then my ceramic ones but you wouldn't notice by wearing them since the weight difference is very small, plus the AR500 plates and thinner which is nice. I need to show this to the doubters I know. Also if anyone has ever seem or shot a .50 they will know that it doesn't matter what body armor you are wearing you will die from the impacted alone; no need for penetration (I am talking about a normal .50 not the pistol round).
Aleksandar Ćurguz not strange anymore. I’ve seen level 3 armor stop 5.56AP consecutively and then seen it rip through consecutively. Things that are manufactured are pumped out at a crazy rate I think each individual product is different molecularly. Not even with firearms and it’s accessories and stuff. Hell I’ve seen armored Sheetrock stop 7.62x39-7.62x51-7.62x63-.45acp- 5.54- and a bunch of other shit and then when he put 5.56 through it ripped through.
An awesome video, I use ceramic still, but this video will make me change my front plate, not both yet. Thank you both for this great info. R.I.P. Barry
Let me make something clear guys. I've never sat through more than 1 minute of any of his videos. Don't get me wrong...I'm sure he's an okay guy, but I just don't have time. I spend 70 hours a week producing this youtube content. I wish I could say I have time to watch youtube videos, but I spend time creating content, not watching it. Sadly, it's the nature of the beast.
So basically what I'm trying to say is that if there is some verbiage or other irrelevant stuff that you've seen some other UA-camr do, I can't comment on it, because there's a strong chance I haven't seen it.
Hey MrAllanHolman, aren’t you a member of the North American Man/Boy Love Association? You are pretty much suggesting that if a person uses a word then no one else is ever allowed to use it either. Since that is the case, you should feel free to stop speaking or writing, as every word you use has been used previously by others. This is a good idea for you to consider. Acting on It will leave you with more time on your hands to play with wang.
This video is very well done. I like how you placed the plates in a carrier and attached it to the ballistic body. Much more realistic than some other tests I've seen. Thank you.
Great video thank you guys for putting in the work I have to say that took a lot more than I thought it would. The AP 30-06 I was impressed with. Stay safe all!
Thehossusmc has a video of testing an armor plate in the desert. They shot it twice in the same spot with a .338 Lapua and it stopped both shots and it was home made from 1/4 inch AR500 steel.
I bought my armor today at their facility. They really treated me well and fit my armor to me! Glad I live within 20 miles of their facility. I'm likely to purchase another as it doesn't get better than this and I'm looking for a custom home armor. My purchase was for rifle threats with mag pouches and holster. Not mentioned here Front and back plates came with my gear for a really fair price!
I got the ASC level III plates with the PAXCON Line-X build up from AR500 for my Banshee, the same vest as used in this test. On top of that, I bought spall guards from D-RMOR Gear for my plates.
Great video. Your video production is some of the best of all the prepping channels. Enjoy your knowledge and time you put in. Thanks for serving as well.
Every review ALWAYS leaves out the common AR 55gr M193, which will go right through AR500 at closer ranges with a 16+in barrel. btw LVL 3A is the highest NIJ rated SOFT kevlar armor, LVL 3 (HARD) is for typical FMJ rifle rounds and LVL 4 is Armor piercing (APM2). AR500 1/4in is LVL 3.
OUTSTANDING. I too am used to ceramic plates and was skeptical about these plates esp. w/ spalling. I think I might be sold. Good review. Keep up the great work.
This doesn't have to do with the vid but anyway in your opinion wich one of the pistols I'm gonna mention is better? (in terms of capacity, efficiency and looks): -The German Luger pistol (Parabellum) (9mm) -The c96 Mauser (9mm)
Just FYI, Level 1 soft armor doesn't exist anymore on the NIJ ratings. The lowest NIJ rating you can now get is level 2A. Level 2A will stop anything from a 9mm -.40 S&W. Level 2 will stop 9mm -.357 magnum. Level 3A will stop .357 Sig - .44 magnum. This plate will not stop rifle rounds. Level 3 will stop 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball. Level 3 is tested to 6 shots. It will also stop the lesser threats. Level 4 will stop .30-06 M2 AP. It is tested to 1 round. So, being that the plate that was shot is a level 3, it over performed, which is just awesome. The level 2A through level 3A for pistol threats, and the level 3 for rifle threats, are rated for multiple hits. They test them, where they make sure the rounds are spaced. Just thought I would throw that out there.
I've also seen these AR-500 armor plates stop a .338 lapua magnum (standard lead projectile) at under 100m. Twice. Also, these plates were never intended for .30-06 M2 AP ammunition, that's lvl4 armor or better. That is impressive.
I'm surprised that the .30-06 penetrator didn't go through. The guys at Demolition Ranch tested this armor with a .308 penetrator and got it to go through.
Awesome video guys! These plates are the same ones my company carries, and I have to say as a LEO and former veteran myself, these are the best choice, considering the price.
He made a reference to a 50 cal... to people who don't know a us marine scout sniper team used one in Iraq one day (just a story I know) 1.5 miles out a bullet from a barret penetrated a wall and hit 1 combatant cutting him in half and passed through into the man behind him also cutting him in half... I really don't think a plate will stop that
Superb video. I like the fact that you tested the armor in a carrier. It was much more realistic that placing one plate in a card board box. Keep up the excellent work.
Every review I seen the coating starts to split at the edges. It looks like your holder took some small damage. I wonder if a little duck tape would keep the coating intact longer. Honestly I would like AR 500 to make a Kevlar jacket for the plate.
I didn’t think that level 3 plate was supposed to stop .30-.06 because of how fast that round is. I’ve seen vids where 5.56 xm193 out of a 24” barrel punched right through those 3a plates, cause of the velocity you can get from those rounds.
ERIC, How about the crush factor trauma, bro? The broken ribs from the higher velocity/heavy weight projectiles impacting the body armor system? Been there, Done that, Got the t-shirt, the broken ribs and the scars , and wore them all out repeatedly from Vietnam to the sandbox bro. Thank You for an other great production bro.
I can't imagine why anybody would give a thumbs down to this vid. I liked it immensely. I've been trying to make up my mind getting some body armor for home defense. This definitely gives me a great deal off favorable info. Thanks!!
Yeah it stopped the 30-06 m2 and the 500 mag, but when you get hit with either one of those rounds I dont think your getting up right away and heading for cover. The guy you hit would probably be in the ground doing the crappy flop for a while.
Really cool video!!! Although the the plate stops the bullet from penetrating and killing you, the likely broken ribs and possible sternum that come from sheer impact still might. But at least it's nice to know you have a pretty solid chance! Can't wait to see what you guys do with the ballistics gelatin in later vids!
It looked like Chad's "miss" with the .357 would have come pretty close to or maybe even hitting that left rotator cuff. All-in-all, that AR500 rig looks like really nice/high quality stuff that actually works above and beyond. Thanks for the video.
Always thought it would be a good idea to have one of these if you were in the woods in an area that has alot of hunters running around during the season. accidents happen, could save your life.
This may be a dumb question, so please bare with me. That carrier has magazine pouches on the front. If those pouches had magazines in them, and a bullet struck the magazine, would some other the rounds in the magazine discharge due to the kinetic energy/ potential sparks(kind of far fetched) the powder within the cases are being exposed to? Thanks to whoever can answer this for me, I appreciate it.
Why no mags in the carrier? That is how you would carry it correct? Loaded mags in carrier. It does seem to be a waste but, it would be collateral damage to the gelatin
Hell yeah. '06 is one hell of a round. Thats why I'll always prefer it over some new fangled 308/7.62/30 cal rounds. I mean even as old as it is, its still at the top of its game for its age. I think if youd of handloaded some stouter loads, the 06 would have made short work of it. Not dissing the armor or anything cause I just saw it stop an 06. Barely, but still stopped it. Mad respect, 06 is a Powerhouse round anways.
modern .308 is roughly equal to ww2 era 06' rounds, and even if you compare modern .308 to modern 30-06, there is only about 100-150fps and ~100ftlbs energy difference. negligible if you ask me.
the extra case capacity does offer some wiggle room in working up loads, especially with heavier bullets. But the .308 is rated for higher pressure than the 06'. And my point was that when both are pushed to the max, the difference isn't nearly as much as one would think, especially with bullets weighing less than ~175gr.
Eric, are you guys testing the new level IV or the IIIA? This plate took a beating that nobody else has been able to replicate. Tim was blasting through the ones that he was testing with 30-06 and 7.62x54R. Even .308 I think I'm glad I bought these.
That is some pretty fucking hardcore armor. I'd never imagine we quite had down the tech for such a relatively small plate that could stop a .308 AP round. Obviously if dude is shooting your vigorously it won't matter if you can't hit cover... but still a pretty good level of security to have, busted ribs or otherwise.
Uhm. That first vest, a PASGT vest, was not used in Vietnam. It was issued in the 80s, made of Kevlar, and it will stop a knife. Go ahead and "try to penetrate right through" that soft armor with a knife. It will stop some handgun rounds, but no one seems to know what rounds under what conditions. I've seen thinner Kevlar vests stop 9mm rounds. Apparently, sometimes that old PASGT vest stops handgun rounds, sometimes it doesn't. No one really knows.
The normal/old Kevlar, like that used in a PAGST vest, doesn't stop knives. It'll resist a slash or cut, but not a stab. The 'stab-resistant' soft armor, like Kevlar AS (Anti-Stab), is a fairly new innovation.
Body armour will stop a round if you are hit in the armour plate. The plare is designed to cover the most vital organs to try and keep you alive. Your best option is avoid getting shot in the first place. Body armour doesn't make you bullet proof. The impact energy from the round is still going to feel like you have been kicked in the chest by a mule. Just look back at the close up slow motion footage and watch the ballistic gell flex. I work in law enforcement and wear ceramic plates everyday and that carrier setup is heavy enough after a 12hr shift. The steel plate and coating is a great job but way too heavy for my liking. Useful test though.
Thank you for this exciting demonstrative video guys. I've never seen anything like this before. I'm not a native speaker but all of your vids are crystal clear so again thanks for your work.
Excellent and informative plus entertaining. As you state . Tactics are the number one defence. Would be interesting to see just how much energy is needed to run around in that kit !
Thanks for the hard work Eric and chad I learned a lot today from this video!!! Now I'm courious about soviet rounds such as 5.45x39- 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r. Well I trust the both of you will make a video about those calibers vs AR-500 armor.
I think one of the most impressive aspects of this product is the price. A carrier and 2 level 3 plates for under $400. With that much capability that seems like a steal.
Years ago I had the argument of wether or not body armor is legal with a friend googled it to show him 2 hours later i designed a custom vest that came up to like $2000. Maybe not now but bookmark that
Just thinking about how that plate is designed, and i was thinking why not put a small lip on all the sides to redirect the shrapnel away from the body.
Just watched this and the other AR500 video you did, enjoyed them as I have your other videos. Like every other body armor review video I've seen though you're shooting at the plate straight-on, 90 degree angle, and it's my understanding that in most closer range cases people don't square off against a shooter (assuming they're in a typical shooter stance), so if you are to do another of these videos I'd love to see a plate shot at from a more realistic angle (45 degrees?) to see if the plate performs as well or if the projectile penetrates the coating but travels along the plate surface, deflected, exiting the side of the plate somewhat intact. Would also be interesting to see how other plates (ceramic, foam, uncoated steel) would perform at the same angle. I'd do the test and make a video myself but... Canada.... :/
That was very cool and it really helped me make my decision about buying my body armor. Thank you I would however really like to see how it holds up against a .300 Win Mag w/ 190 grain hpbt.
30/06 and 308 are very close, the last test would have been nice to see is a 300 win or 7mm with the black tip or Barns, but I thought for sure the 30/06 AP would have "defeated" that armor.
When your done shooting the molle vest I will gladly take it off your hands. That is if nobody else does. Thanks for the videos over the years by far my favorite gun UA-cam channel. Thanks guys, miss berry though. You guys ever thought about making a outtake video. The funny out takes. Thanks again I'll shut up now.
Ribs are gonna be sore, but very impressive demonstration!
Lol I'm sub to you
OMG FUNKER I LOVE YOUR VIDS
oof
Id rather have sore ribs then a dead brain.
Broken ribs probably.
FINALLY someone shot this while in the plate carrier so that I can see how well the carrier stops fragments (which seems to do well)
Great video guys. If a .308 won't go through, I know a .22lr won't either. However, to quote a good friend of mine "A .22lr will kill the crap out of you".
22 is the best by fare for protection
A Vietnam era flak vest will stop a .22lr
22 is crap ...that's all
Scott Boss
There are dead people who would disagree.
Scott Boss a 22lr will make you just as dead as a bazooka..............
I miss hearing "welcome back everybody this is eric and barry"
I know 😭. (Lol 5 years later) .
Chad's cool, but he'll never be Barry cool...
I met berry with the lost art cut shell video
Very good point that I never even thought of
Awesome video Eric!
You should have tried the 7.62 x 54R steel cored.
Why not fold the edges of the plate forwards to reduce the dangers of spalling.
Ended up getting some III+ with extra thick antispalding coating from AR500 armor and they are good quality. This video is what made my decision
I bought the AR500 plates and could not be happier! They are heavier then my ceramic ones but you wouldn't notice by wearing them since the weight difference is very small, plus the AR500 plates and thinner which is nice. Level III armor survived 30.06 AP ?? Strange
That's not russian lvl III arrmor...
Level 3 is rated for 7.62 mm full metal jacket going 2700 fps.A 308 AP will go straight through it so yes I was surprised with the 30-06 results.
@@bensingleton9146 ultra strange 😀
Chad adds a valuable addition to the information level of the channel. You guys ain't even bothering to take names.
An awesome video, I use ceramic still, but this video will make me change my front plate, not both yet. Thank you both for this great info. R.I.P. Barry
Philosophy of use?!?!
I didn't know you guys took Nutn's job.
Let me make something clear guys. I've never sat through more than 1 minute of any of his videos. Don't get me wrong...I'm sure he's an okay guy, but I just don't have time. +Iraqveteran8888 ceramic plate or ar500 ? in your own opinion.
Hey MrAllanHolman, aren’t you a member of the North American Man/Boy Love Association? You are pretty much suggesting that if a person uses a word then no one else is ever allowed to use it either. This video is very well done. I like how you placed the plates in a carrier and attached it to the ballistic body. Much more realistic than some other tests I've seen. Thank you.
Matt did the same round on Demolition Ranch, 30.06 black tip. Punched through both level 3 and level 3+...
I was planning on complaining about every youtube channel doing AR500 tests, but watched til the end. Good job on the realistic tests.
Chad doesn't need armour when your a cybernetic organism, great vid, was hoping for an ammo dump or 50 cal
It appears to be level III armor, I'm surprised that it stopped m-2 black-tipped.
Great video thank you guys for putting in the work I have to say that took a lot more than I thought it would. The AP 30-06 I was impressed with. Stay safe all!
those vests have been sold out for weeks on the website... and here yall are destroying one... good job and thank you...
What is that clicking noise heard after every trigger pull? If it's the trigger reset sound, it sure is loud...
Thehossusmc has a video of testing an armor plate in the desert. They shot it twice in the same spot with a .338 Lapua and it stopped both shots and it was home made from 1/4 inch AR500 steel.

Blown away with how well that anti spalling coating held up. Seen vests that have been shot 4 times and the rubber covering the front just pops off
I bet Chad never loses a staring contest
Lmaooo was literally looking for this comment. Cause I thought the same thing
👀
This was the best 500 armor test ever made!!! Good job and thank you guys.
I would like to take this time to thank you for your service to this great country Eric. I hope you and your's have a safe and happy Memorial day.
(in terms of capacity, efficiency and looks):
-The German Luger pistol (Parabellum) (9mm)
-The c96 Mauser (9mm)
It looks like that 500 magnum at the end left a bit of "hammer bite" on his thumb when fired.
Thanks Eric! I bought a set of these plates last week, but its good to see an informative in-depth video on them. Good going!
Just thought I would throw that out there.
i was very impressed seeing lvl 3+ stopping 30-06 AP, strange other videos shows 30-06 AP flies straight thru the armor
Demo Ranch's vid pounded their plate like crazy before going to the AP round.
Another good video. Nice Garand. To think I qualified with the Garand when I was in the military. Wish I was young like you fellows.
Love my od green plate carrier with ar500 front, back, and side plates good to know they can take multiple hits like that!!
Would have liked to see the back of the first plate. And that was another plate for the second part of the vid, no?
Awesome video guys! These plates are the same ones my company carries, and I have to say as a LEO and former veteran myself, these are the best choice, considering the price.
Great video! I had purchased mine a year ago! Well worth it! Glad to see more support for the ar500 line x plates!
Chad made some valid points to own body armor that i never thought about...Good Video.
I wished they would do a big bore rifle video like 458 win mag or lott.
Great vid. Keep in mind that the body can get leathel damage by the shockwaves from the hits.
I'll be very satisfied knowing that I bought a great product and knowing it can take good hits!! Great for doing security work!
Every review I seen the coating starts to split at the edges. It looks like your holder took some small damage. I wonder if a little duck tape would keep the coating intact longer. Honestly I would like AR 500 to make a Kevlar jacket for the plate.
Nice video! I just watched a AR500 vs ESAPI video yesterday but it was a few years old and i like youre videos better!
I didn’t think that level 3 plate was supposed to stop .30-.06 because of how fast that round is. I’ve seen vids where 5.56 xm193 out of a 24” barrel punched right through those 3a plates, cause of the velocity you can get from those rounds.
Very nice video and short explanation of body armor. Pretty impressive how little shrapnel escapes for how many rounds you put into it.

I can't imagine why anybody would give a thumbs down to this vid. I liked it immensely. I've been trying to make up my mind getting some body armor for home defense. This definitely gives me a great deal off favorable info. Thanks!!
Great review guys that plate stop more than I thought it would good stuff to stop the rifle rounds.
I can only imagine what fun Barry would have had in this video! May he rest in peace!
Yeah it stopped the 30-06 m2 and the 500 mag, but when you get hit with either one of those rounds I dont think your getting up right away and heading for cover. The guy you hit would probably be in the ground doing the crappy flop for a while.

But at least it's nice to know you have a pretty solid chance! Can't wait to see what you guys do with the ballistics gelatin in later vids!
That Scar Heavy is sooo nice nice set up
Spall is metal fragments coming off the armor. Splash is the fragments of the bullet.
At least that's what they taught us in tank school.
Funny, the miss with the 357 would have killed the guy dead. There is a pretty major vein right around that area.
Honestly, I think this production is better than if the Discovery Channel had done it.
It looked like Chad's "miss" with the .357 would have come pretty close to or maybe even hitting that left rotator cuff. All-in-all, that AR500 rig looks like really nice/high quality stuff that actually works above and beyond. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for serving our country!!! You should be appreciated for what u did I hope u know that!
Always thought it would be a good idea to have one of these if you were in the woods in an area that has alot of hunters running around during the season. accidents happen, could save your life.
I love the smile and the quote " it smacked the crap out of that" after shooting it with the 500........... :)
The first 2 min of the video all I can think about is... no dont shoot the plate carrier i need a new plate carrier.lol
Believe it or not, I've seen a .45 acp round bounce off of one of those kevlar frag vests at 25 yards. I was very surprised.
It's highly unlikely that ammunition would go off. Grenades/ flashbangs/ other munitions have a higher chance of going off if you get shot.
thank you for the response
Why no mags in the carrier? That is how you would carry it correct? Loaded mags in carrier.
It does seem to be a waste but, it would be collateral damage to the gelatin
Hell yeah. '06 is one hell of a round. Thats why I'll always prefer it over some new fangled 308/7.62/30 cal rounds. I mean even as old as it is, its still at the top of its game for its age. I think if youd of handloaded some stouter loads, the 06 would have made short work of it. Not dissing the armor or anything cause I just saw it stop an 06. Barely, but still stopped it. Mad respect, 06 is a Powerhouse round anways.
modern .308 is roughly equal to ww2 era 06' rounds, and even if you compare modern .308 to modern 30-06, there is only about 100-150fps and ~100ftlbs energy difference. negligible if you ask me.
spyderxtra777 You're correct however, non-standard loadings of 30-06 can be MUCH hotter than a .308.
WW1 and WW2, the '06 is perhaps the most proven round.
the extra case capacity does offer some wiggle room in working up loads, especially with heavier bullets. But the .308 is rated for higher pressure than the 06'. And my point was that when both are pushed to the max, the difference isn't nearly as much as one would think, especially with bullets weighing less than ~175gr.
.308 newfangled? It's like 60 years old, lol.
Will it stop Russian/Chinese type's of ammunition?
WHAT AN AMAZING VIDEO!!! Guys your channels is incredible right now!
Eric, are you guys testing the new level IV or the IIIA? This plate took a beating that nobody else has been able to replicate. Tim was blasting through the ones that he was testing with 30-06 and 7.62x54R. Even .308 I think
I'm glad I bought these.
Awesome review. Good info kept interesting. Now to the ar500 website!
Great video guys!
Please make more armor tests videos. The guys in law enforcement and in the Army are following those videos in UA-cam
Bad quality control or hearsay? Didn't he say Iraq and not Viet Nam anyways?
The normal/old Kevlar, like that used in a PAGST vest, doesn't stop knives. It'll resist a slash or cut, but not a stab. The 'stab-resistant' soft armor, like Kevlar AS (Anti-Stab), is a fairly new innovation.
Kevlar is fibers, doesn't and never has had the ability to stop knives.

I've seen someone try to stab through a Kevlar vest. Not close. But, let's see the test video.
Agree, hope the person shooting hits the 12 x14 inch plate and not ones head!
With that much capability that seems like a steal.
i have a set of their plates different brand carrier, they have great plates.
Years ago I had the argument of wether or not body armor is legal with a friend googled it to show him 2 hours later i designed a custom vest that came up to like $2000. Maybe not now but bookmark that
Haha great vid timing. I just picked out a Plate Carrier today and I am getting AR500 Lev III Rifle Plates
Really good video. Enjoyed it. I am shocked it could stop the M2 AP.
On an unrelated note, that M1 is in *beautiful* condition.
This video definitely has made an AR500 customer out of me.
Convenience store clerks should wear body armor...
thank you for protecting and serving our country!!!
