  • I bought a not working TaoTao 50cc scooter on Craigslist for $200. Can I get it working?
    I have corrected the title removing the GY6 as it has been pointed out to me this not a GY6.

      My teenage bike was a Yamaha CA50. I had no idea how to maintain it. I put gas in it but never put oil (it was a 50cc 2 stroke. You didn’t have to mix the gas. It had a separate tank and automatically mixed the oil). So, in short, without oil that was the end of it. Too bad. It was actually a nice bike.

    The reason the fan gear broke is because there is supposed to be a washer between the gear and casing that gets forgotten during assembly, the washer acts as a ride for the gear to keep the gear from digging itself into the casing thus breaking the kickstart

    This is actually a great video on what is NOT the problem and how NOT to "fix" this scooter. The starter is accessible by removing the seat cowling. However, if you are determined to remove the belt cover (great if you want to inspect the belt), there are two access points towards the bottom and front in which you can insert a screw driver and pop the cover off after removing all bolts. DOH!!!! I haven't even finished the rest of this video or the series 2 of this video, but hey, why not watch it until my part arrives from Amazon today to figure out what else not to do. The kickstart clamp is a snap ring, and you can get a set of snap ring pliers for $3.99 at Harbor Freight. The gasket underneath the belt cover is there to prevent dirt and water from entering and boogering up the components underneath.

    the GY6 is the engine design (TaoTao uses a clone of this), used in a few makes and models of 49cc scooters. that's good tho because there's lots of aftermarket parts for these engines.
    you can get 8-10K miles out of them but you need to get in to it every other year. tight spaces to work on, but they are simple. kickstart is a common problem

    The odds are, that you'll get that case all back together, and then the Bendix will finally go out and you'll have to take apart all that good work. If you're even in the slightest amount of doubt, replace it all or take it all off to replace the one piece later. Not much later...
    Oh, and on the carb, it is serviceable, but it's a true p i t a. I had an old Tank TK 50cc scooter exactly like what you're working on and I can tell you you're better off buying a new carburetor starting from scratch if you don't have a lot of precision tools. I can remember using a thin guitar string to clean out a dirty jet back when I owned mine. You got to be careful because if you mess up the diameter in the jet reaming it too much you'll have to rejet. All in all I kept that thing running for ages before it finally fell apart to the point I couldn't write it anymore
    congrats on your purchase though, those things are amazing when they work and you'll definitely get an education. It's a very serviceable bike and is more forgiving and most people think. A lot of it is just in the care and maintenance. Take care of it and it'll last running into the ground and it'll leave you on the side of the road

    Square nut usually goes in the battery terminal spot and a bolt gets put in to hold the wire. Wire should of had round wire connectors on them for the bolt to pass through and connect. Easy fix thou and if something has a gasket put one back. Snap ring pliers are what you needed for the clip. A screw driver would of worked thou. Dash turn light staying solid usually means bad bulb or ground

    • @Obecny75
      @Obecny75 5 років тому

      I've actually seen on cheaper vehicles that the turn signal light on the dash stays solid when the turn signals are on. Depends if the turn signal itself was flashing or not. (I haven't gotten to that part of the video yet)

    That battery is not the same as comes with Tao Tao those square hook ups are standard in riding lawn mowers so I suppose if you go to tractor supplier/ Lowes or home depot you can find the connections . It's to hard to explain but simply a block with threads goes in the open square hole and you screw the bolt through the eyelet on the wires so actually you could find a square bolt that fits into the opening and get connectors to attach to the wire ends

  • @LilHoss

    I tried my best to replace the kickstarter like you did, but I couldn't get the shaft of the half moon gear to go thru enough to put the lock washer in place. I did get it to work by putting the gear in just hooked on the short hook, put the snap washer on it, then took a screw driver and pulled on the long side of spring and looped it around it's post (it wasn't too hard). The whole new kickstarter is a booger to get in!!!!
