Regardless of so-called Daesangs. For me, the song/record of the year 2021 is IU's Celebrity.
Other than having hard data in digitals to back it up, I simply love how it was able to bring people from all over on Social media to celebrate themselves + each other regardless of social class, culture, language barriers, etc.. It is a song that is about celebrating and prizing one's life, the underrepresented to value oneself's unique individuality regardless of society's pressure for conformity, while also breaking apart what has been perceived to 'make up' a celebrity, ie/ the clothes, makeup, following rules, image-making etc.. It is also the performance of the night for me because of the new arrangement especially the beginning, the uplifting ending, and the whole gorgeous production from the IU team.
Actually, I too immediately shared how you felt upon the first view, a mournful and almost remorseful beginning even for a fleeting moment before the visible transition into a better positive mindset. This deliberate art direction confirms the belief there's a high probability 'Celebrity' is one more in IU's series that had been inspired/referenced to IU's biggest muse Sulli (Peach, Red Queen, Eight etc.). The transition from the Strawberry moon clip into the Celebrity star in the night heavenly sky, frozen in time, immortalized. The visual references have always been there if you look hard enough in the MV and its Special Clip, especially the styling/hat very much recall the episode of Hotel Del Luna when Sulli had featured in. The vintage room-to-room set/curtains/furniture interiors, IU's hair clip from the Special clip recalls Sulli's Goblin MV, which also played on the themes of identity, personas, dress up dark emotions/melancholy in a whimsical way. I find the most healing and touching part of this version was the wall-to-wall of IU's real-life friends like Yoo In Na in their everyday life normal clothes and funny moments, and of course how she keeps referring to her Uaenas who are her real life 'Celebrity' and inspiration. IU's love is real and she really delivers them through her work and art. What an amazing artist!

During the Celebrity performance, dresses are shown by the background performers. I have seen her wear dresses like them, I think in "IU TV" clips. I wonder if they were actual dresses she has worn on stage? Keep in mind that I am no expert in fashion.
There were definitely dresses from the Celebrity MV, but I'm not sure if others were from other stages... I might need to lean in closer to the screen and confirm!
