  • I've been loving the "shirred" trend that is popular this summer, especially all the quaint midi dresses with puffy sleeves, so I thought I would try my hand at making the "Atlanta" dress from Daily Sleeper.

    This Is so cute! Thank you for the tutorial. This was part of my childhood. The dresses, Sundresses & beautiful maxi dresses I wore from birth to the '90s were full of these dresses & they really are comfortable & Beautiful on many shapes & sizes. Using many of the gorgeous fabrics they have developed since the 90's- would be beautiful too.
    They made a billowy long sleeve on one dress in particular - where the sheering was the entire forearm & the bodice, It had a baltic type print so it was really a Boho- Before Boho was ever a thing. lol
    . I am glad you've brought a bit of the charm back to this style -
    I have checked on that site where you gleaned the idea from & I don't care who you are - there is no way in heaven those dresses cost $490. US.. ..

    I think this is the most detailed shirred dress tutorial at youtube. I have 2 questions why you didnt sew a tube instead of adding the skirt afterwords and I didnt understand what is a bias tape tube 🙈 I will start cutting my dress today it would amazing if you enlighten me 😊

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  4 роки тому +1

      You should totally go for it! Okay, so about your questions...I don’t know what you meant by the first one, about sewing a tube instead of adding the skirt afterwards, do you mean an elastic tube for the waist? The bias tape tube is for the sleeve elastic and it just means sewing bias tape by adding a seam to both sides to create a channel for the elastic...hope that helps :)

    Did you wash the fabric first? Its so much less time consuming to not wash and iron before but a must, I always was taught, did you find it shrunk, causing unevenness in places? So impressed with your shirring technique, I found it daunting when I tried, but I may have wound the elastic too tight.

      Oh gosh...I can't even remember. Pretty sure it was about 4-5 yards

    I had this kind of dress about 5-7 years ago but then my mom whose just gave birth to my sister wore it and the bust area and the arm(?) area expand 😂 now I cannot wear it again

    I wish you would show the pieces as you see so we can see what they SHOULD look like a EACH STEP

      I know, it’s so hard to show every detail without it being super long. I would watcher other tutorials on UA-cam to see additional angles. Lauren Johnson has a shirred top tutorial

    Is it possible to undo the shirring? I have a dress with some, but it looks odd on me and it would look better if it was regular

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  3 роки тому

      I would think so...you will just be left with a lot of fabric

    Hi there do you have any ideas for how to raise the neckline?

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  3 роки тому

      So my neckline was originally much more raised...just deepen the under arm curves so it fits higher on the chest :)

    im wondering why you did the skirt separately, do you think it would look/feel the same?

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  3 роки тому

      You can do them together, and many do, but based on the math I did for the diathermy of the top, my skirt wouldn’t have been as full as I wanted

    What do you do for the itchiness of shirring elastic.. I love the way it looks but the shirred fabric has elastic on the inside and I find it very uncomfortable

    • @MaddieLynn

      This dress is surprisingly comfortable!

    hi! I want to start sewing clothes, but idk what sewing machine to buy... i have some money saved up, but dont know which to buy.... which would you suggest??????

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  4 роки тому

      Most sewing machines are good that have 3 or more stitches. I recommend Janome, but singer and Brother are good also. You can find some good deals on eBay. It probably needs to have a straight stitch, zig zag, and button hole....bonuses are speed control, 5+ stitches, and a self threaded

    • @MaddieLynn

      You should! I think I included the yardage in the description....but pretty sure I ended up using about 4 yards or less. If you make it tag me so I can see☺️

  • @jenniferbazan6662

    How do you determine the curve for the underarm?? I have never understood this 😔

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  4 роки тому

      Great question and honestly I kind of just wing it...lol....it usually depends on how I want my sleeves to sit and if I want my sleeves to be more set in or on the edge....I kind of just eyeballed it :)

    There is a huge difference between shirring using shirring elastic and English smocking.
    English smocking requires fabric, thread and a grid to use to make your pleats.. The decoration is done using thread on top of the smocking pleats. You can get a machine to make the smocking pleats, but they are expensive!
    Please explain that both are valid but very different techniques.
    I have used horse mane and tail pullings for an experimental project. That was fun.

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  3 роки тому

      Yes, there is a big difference but since this project was about shirring that’s what I wanted to focus on. I love how smocking looks though, so unique 💕 I really want to get a machine but they are hard to find
