Gran Vals Nokia Tune | Francisco Tarrega | Classical Guitar Lesson 1 of 2 | NBN Guitar

  • Francisco Tárrega was a true hero of the guitar with a prolific compositional output rivalled by few guitarists even today. In addition to being a wonderful composer he was also a brilliant virtuoso responsible for almost single-handedly developing modern classical guitar technique and establishing a solid repertoire.
    'Gran Vals' is the piece represented in this tutorial. If you are old enough to remember the ringtone from the earliest Nokia mobile phones then you would definitely have heard bars 13 to 16! Amazingly Nokia made their first ever identifiable cellphone ringtone using those bars from this piece. It is also known in Nokia terms as 'Grande Valse'.
    The piece as a whole is not overly difficult although the B-section in E major has some tricky moments with quick hammer/pull-off combinations and quick acciacattura or grace notes appearing throughout. A slight accent to the melody notes should be used and a steady waltz pulse should be maintained throughout the piece except where ritenuto or obvious cadences suggest otherwise.

    joshua rogers, I just met your video this morning, you're amazing and kind since you reply everyone. I've learned guitar from my 12 years old, your tutorial reminds me of my childhood when I was a beginner and learned this music and how my teacher taught me to put my finger on the right position.
    I have stopped learning guitar for many years. However, your tutorial makes learning again possible for me. The video just lit up my hope.
    Thank you and I wish you to continue. I'll always support you!

      Really, you said a lot of great things.
      ''It's a journey, not a really a destination when playing the guitar.''
      You also stated to aim for steady progress on the guitar, and if nobody else is listening, that's fine because learning the guitar is for yourself and it should be fun.
      Not only is it inspiring for me to continue practicing, it reminds me why I picked up guitar in the first place.
      You're doing a great service for us all. I look forward to learning a lot of songs with you!

    Wow- I’ve learnt so much about positions to play instead of jumping around the fret board like a crazy person, and then losing the flow of the piece. thank you!! This is the first more advance piece I’m learning to play, it’s been a challenge as I only have trinity grade 5 level knowledge while attempting something a bit beyond my current abilities- awesome teaching video!

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  5 років тому

      That's great Karen. I remember the crazy days of jumping all over the fretboard too. Grade 5 is a decent level for sure - I'd rate this piece around grade 8 heck it may even be a diploma piece but I can't really remember. You have to play stuff that's beyond your abilities to advance but I'm sure you already know that. All the best and let your fingers fly!

    Learned more about natural harmonics from 8:47-9:10 than my whole life ever. Also thank you so much for this lesson it's such a fun song to play. If you're still having issues with people stealing your content, try adding a watermark to your video or wear a t-shirt of your channel.

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  6 років тому +1

      Hi Mark. Awesome to hear that. Natural harmonics blew me away the first time I saw/heard my first guitar teacher playing them. That's a great suggestion. My current videos have a watermark but a t-shirt with my logo is a great idea man!

    • @markhanna5161
      @markhanna5161 6 років тому +1

      My friend I owe it all to you... Been practicing all day and it sounds so majestic haha. And that watermark looks more like a hyperlink in the video. Remember, you want something that they won't be able to easily edit out of the video or change in any way. Logos are perfect. Another idea is maybe after you make a logo (which I can help with if needed), print a poster or something of it and hang it on the wall behind you in your videos. I have experience with digital design if you want some free work done, anything for more of your tutorials man.

      joshua rogers Have you heard Brahm's 21 Hungarian Dances? Most people have only heard his fifth Hungarian Dance. And the only one that has lessons to play on the guitar is the fifth one. Perhaps if you have heard the other ones, you could post a lesson on how to play other ones, like the 11th one, or the 14th one, or another of some kind. Anyway, thank you very much for your videos, have a good one!

    man! thats harder than it looks ,lot of remembering ,,great for the rythm,thanks M8,looking forward to the second installment.A bit like how you must be feeling right now regarding the rugby id say.As i recall Ireland kicked the all blacks a rses for the first time ever last week, i think were gonna do it again in a few days time,im not tryin to rub it in or anything ,im just sayin is all :)

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  7 років тому +1

      It is actually harder than it looks. The rhythm is a little tricky - it's the grace notes that make it so. As far as the ABs losing I'm not too beat up about it. The worst thing is I asked my mate to stream it to me live via facebook at 4am in the morning. No shame in losing to Ireland though. They played amazingly that day and were deserved winners. With Connor McGregor winning his UFC I'm thinking 4 leaf clovers must be booming this year! Let's see how it all pans out...if you guys win I may have to block you from my channel :D

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  7 років тому +1

      I did notice that the Maori All Blacks placed a No. 8 jersey on the halfway line when they did their pre-game haka out of respect to Anthony Foley. That's the thing that I love about rugby too - there's a lot of respect and true sportsmanship between the nations. It's just great.

    Thanks for your great tutorial. Some thing i cant undestand. When you play the end of part one you make a barre on 5. fret with all chords. You could do a small barre on the first three cords and play the A chord free. Why dont you do so?

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  6 років тому +1

      You're welcome Gloria. I play it that way in order to sustain the A in the bass. If I played it as you're suggesting the open A would be cut short when I play the E on the A string at the 7th position.

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  6 років тому

      It's all good. I'm pretty sure I say exactly which fret and string you're supposed to play on (if that's what you're alluding to). Don't thank me too soon because I do charge for access to the second tutorial :)
