their corrupt influence really affected companies like atlus , they dont care about female protagonists and when they make one with a female MC they make sure it is mediocre compared to their male MC exclusive games. buddism and confucianism gave boost to sexism and misogyny. meanwhile while sexism exists in the west there are more examples of player choice and more female MC games. The lack of respect towards females in general are also a factor to Japan population decline, not just financial reasons. a japanese girl was interviewed and she says its a thing in Japan where a lot of boys don't beleive in "ladies first" and want to place themselves first in everything. So like Korea, more girls reject the opposite sex since they are not treated as equals.

I think it's an important point of distinction that there are no substantiated claims of Sega having yakuza ties prior to the Sammy buyout/hostile takeover in 2004. The exodus of employees and shift in culture was enormous - it's literally a different company in all but name and just a small handful of employees. As an old Sega die-hard, it's beyond sad to see the degree to which they ruined Sega's name and reputation. There have been occasional highlights (the arcade division stayed solid until the late 00's, Valkyria Chronicles was uncharacteristically Sega for a 2008 game), but I almost wish they could have just been put to rest rather than be Sammy's front.

@@gjergjaurelius9798Never did get the Yank insistence that SEGA was American due to Standard Games as they really aren't when you analyse everthing objectively. Sega of America is the newest one, and it's often treated as the black sheep part of SEGA, though Sega Europe technically predates it but even calling the now defunct Standard Games American is a bit of a stretch because although it may have some limited operation in LA at one time, it was actually started in Hawaii - a land that is not only not geographically American mainland but actually has as much history with nations like Japan, Scotland (the nation that makes up the Northern part of Great Britain) and Polynesian figures from these lands etc.
Though it's monarchy had successfully united the lands for just 80 years, the Hawaii Princess - Ka’iulani was not only the daughter of Archibald Cleghorn, the Scottish born (from Edinburgh) horticulturist and collector of customs, she also became the leading voice in the campaign that would restore the Kingdom of Hawaii after the monarchy was overthrown in 1893.
Looking at the current State Hawaiian flag - it uses the British-wide UK flag called the Union Jack (which is the blue and white Scottish saltire (matches the Sega logo), the red and white saltire of Ulster and the red and white cross of the English national flags combined) which began to be first designed in the year 1606 - after James VI of Scots took over the English throne in the year 1603 along with the Scottish nobility - which began the process of what would lead to the political union between the two kingdoms of Scotland and England by 1707, so why is that you might ask?
Because the Hawaiian king had flown it out of respect for King George III and as a sign of friendship with Britain. During the War of 1812, Americans on the islands were unhappy with such a partisan act. ... When Kamehameha commissioned a flag for the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1816, the designer incorporated the “Union Jack”.”
Interestingly though, Cleghorn, who is remembered particularly for all the planting of the banyan trees became a great close friend and advisor to the King Kalakaua and the Queen Lili’uokalani and also served as the Royal Governor of Oahu in the 1890’s.
When the famous Scottish author who wrote the most famous pirate lore - Treasure Island - Robert Louis Stevenson met Cleghorn and his family after arriving in Hawaii on assignment for a US publisher. The Journalist Billy Kay detailed how Stevenson, then one of the world’s most famous writers following the success of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (also written by Robert) become an ally of King Kalakaua and the royalist movement and was also a regular guest of the Royal Household, where he had a lot of hospitality and drink and where he met Princess Ka’iulani when she was 13, the niece to the King. It was also Scotland that modernised and industrialised Japan after the Scottish Enlightement and before the USA got involved with Japan after the war, Thomas Blake Glover of Aberdeen in Scotland is considered the father of modern Japan and is still revered there and is popularly known as 'The Scottish samurai' and has statues in Japan.
But that aside, on SEGA itself, it's most immediate direct antecedents would be Seizou (Nihon Kikai Seizou) and Goraku (Nihon Goraku Bussan) and Rosen Enterprises as well as Standard Games, so you could say analogically these four are like SEGA's grandparents and most immediate relatives. That's not to say there was never any American input, but SEGA is a lot bigger than just American involvement and when we make this claim based on one element of SEGA, it's useful to take it all into consideration and weigh everything up.
P.S. As well as Sega having some Asian root and a strong western heritage to a degree, if you're wondering why the name 'Service' was used with the colour scheme etc, it was because at a time, SEGA made content for 'Service men' during the war effort - that was the core audience of who they made products for so the word 'Service' was used as part of the name to combine with games- i.e., 'SE' from service - to 'GA' from Games = SEGA.
It's kind of like the Sikhs or Samurai's motto of 'to serve' in both their military heritage.

I know that everyone's experiences are different, but for me what got people worldwide into the Yakuza was obviously Beat Takeshi, right from Violent Cop, there was a resurgence in interest for those films throughout the 1990s.
I'm a massive fan of Yakuza movies and have worked my way back into the 1970s and classics like the Graveyard of Honour films and even further back with the Zatoichi films. I also do like the Yakuza games, but from watching all those movies first.
You know on the DS lite 42 games or clubhouse games there is Hanafuda and I got to enjoy it a lot, reminds me of the sort of thing that Samurai would do, it being based on knowing flora and the seasons, like in Samurai art and poetry. They do explain that it was their first game that they made, so I suspected before your video started that any Yakuza connection for them would be connected to the Hanafuda cards.

I'm always amazed at how people are so bewildered, despite Nintendo's name are literally [DUTY FREE] Heavenly/Pleasure Hall/Shop so it's pretty fitting when it was founded way back then, people really did have a wonderful imagination; i guess that makes for a good content, i suppose.
    .
NIN:任 = Duty as in Duty Free, idk why people seems to interpret this as something else.
TEN:天 = (Ten)gu but it's more used in context as "Heavenly"/"Pleasure", or activities related to red light district.
DOU/DO:堂 = Hall, can be used as shop.

Interesting ..doesn't surprise me though ... never mind Japans consumers ....think of how big it was in the West when Nintendo and Mario Bros came out in the 80's.
Almost every kid had one or a old school folding hand held.
I was obsessed with those hand helds.
Like the really nice heavy ones with the gold covered tops and bottoms that had a scrolling screen.
Remember the sky blue Mario hand held that had a full Mario game that scrolled sideways and the game would switch up for different levels?
Pretty cool for it's time and pricey for what it was.
Asian girls in my elementary school would bring them back from Hong Kong.

Did you know Hiroshi Yamauchi wasn't actually a human being? He was a vessel that enclosed 7 yakuza oni spirits from 7 different regions in Japan. These oni monopolized the gambling in Japan with the hanafuda Nintendo cards and put a spell so that no other company could produce cards, truly evil.
Yamauchi, often referred to as "大魔王 ティラノ天堂" (Great Evil King Tyranotendo), tyranized the video games market with his monopolic practises, it is said that the Master System or the PC Engine didn't actually ever exist, and that they were invented time after so hide the fact that the Famicom was actually the one and only console existing in Japan.

Hmm...not enough context laid down for the yakuza. That you said that they were "mafia" is, while close, not exactly right either. The reason they think themselves as chivalrous is because yakuza originally started off as mercs who protected towns and this eventually evolving into it becoming a protection racket and evolving further from that point.
That kakuribeya is just a common thing done by companies. Employees the company wants to remove are placed there and given menial tasks. The idea is to sap the employee's willingness to work until they choose to quit. That way, the company can't be held liable for forcing the employees to quit since they choose to do so on their own. It's a grey zone.
What's also a grey zone is pachinko. Legally, it's not gambling because, if I remember how it was explained, there is no direct exchange to money happening. You bring your winnings to the exchanger next door to redeem them for items like you would in an arcade using tickets. If you ever played the game center in Pokemon red, blue (green), or yellow, that's exactly what this is.
Another comment said it already, but I'll say it again, that whole break down of the Nintendo name is such a stretch. Pick whether you want to provide information or theorize, not both because that's confusing and very possibly misleading.

Today, all games are beautiful, but they lack a certain verve or magic, if I can use that word? Great story, graphics that fit and musical scores that were top notch. I think one other important thing to mention is that pachinko, like other gambling machines, don't only turn a profit but the system is ideal for laundering money. "Dirty" money gets turned into tokens like metal balls or chips and wins are later paid out with that money now clean. The profits are also hard to gauge because things like winning percentage on modern gambling machines can be adjusted.

5:50 As someone who studies Japanese and has a decent knowledge of Kanji, this entire section just seems like completely conspiracy theory levels of silliness.
天 isn't just used in tengu 天狗, It's also used in 天気 Tenki for weather or 天才 Tensai for genius. You could've picked either of those or many more of the other words that use that kanji to come to a conclusion but oddly chose Tengu?
As for 鼻 nose and 花 Flower, based on where you place intonation the words are actually completely different which is contrary to what you stated at 6:30. THis quick video demonstrates that (ua-cam.com/video/_ST6PQPa99c/v-deo.html) Also, Hana はな is also a female name such as the late pro wrestler, Hana Kimura (木村花).
Kanji actually isn't that complex and once you learn Japanese, it makes a lot of sense. I think maybe consulting with Japanese speakers before making videos like this woud help.
    8:40
Did Nintendo founder yamochi *possibly* show appreciation to his main customer base with his company's name there is certainly some sort of connection...
Possibly? Is this a factual video or mere theory with no evidence?

    • @anikihistory
      @anikihistory  Рік тому +9

You're right, it's just a silly theory but one that i wanted to talk about since i thought it's interesting, especially since no one seems to be sure what Nintendo actually means 😊
As for the whole kanji thing, the theory links 天 to 天狗 instead of other words like 天気 because of the Tengu's symbolic meaning for gamblers, which also brings the whole Hana thing into the mix with the rubbing of the nose as a code etc. Though i am far from perfect when it comes to Kanji, i think that the Japanese do have a tendency to use them in creative ways that go beyond their literal meaning, which might also be the case here, who knows right? 😁
