- "Earthquake game". The crowd reaction to the game
winning touchdown (12:25) was said to have registered on a local seismograph.
October 8, 1988. This was Auburn's only regular season loss. - Спорт
My date and I were sitting on the first row behind the Auburn bench around the 40 yard line that night. Couldn't see a damn thing for most of the game because the Auburn players and staff blocked our view; until that last sequence of plays. I remember pulling off I55 and going to the bathroom at a rural convenience store in Tickfaw, LA on our way in to the game from Jackson, MS that afternoon. On an impulse I bought a cheap Auburn cap in that store having noticed on a rack as I was coming out of the store. I carried it into the stadium stuffed into the back pocket of my jeans. The section we sat in was mostly Auburn players families and other Auburn fans. One of the player's Father saw the cap before kickoff and asked "Oh! You gonna wear that when we beat LSU tonight?". I replied, "Nope. I'm gonna tear it to shreds when LSU wins this game."
Great story GEAUX TIGERS
J Stan Smith when lsu made that play and it got loud, we’re your ears hurting and did the stadium shake?
The cheers after that TD were so loud it registered as an earthquake on the seismograph at the LSU Geoscience Building.
A seismograph records MOVEMENT, not sound.
Notice the word....Motion.
"Seismographs are instruments used to record the motion of the ground during an earthquake. "
@@Jack44MThe cheers were so loud that it shook the stadium and the ground under it. That's what you call... emotion.
@@Jack44Mdo we care? Go Tigers!
At 14:21...that's me in the LSU drumline.
Maiiiiiiiii o has returned
Mike Patrick play by play for this game and the one in 2007 (Flynn to Byrd)
I was 6 years old and was sitting on the West side on the other 5 yard line, by the student section. Was absolute pandemonium
Robbie White did your ears hurt?
@@jacksonreviewsthings2558 My mom was in the student section. To answer your question: VERY much so. They went to celebrate at a frat party and their ears were still ringing so the fraternity turned the music down for everyone.
Here it is 2023 and this clip never gets old. Imagine if the stadium would have had the seating capacity they have now, it would probably have been louder. Love that there have been more times the stadium has registered due to the noise.
Wyoming was ranked 16th in 1988?
blacksabfan Wyoming was ranked???
They were pretty good that year. They finished 11-2, which included a 10-0 start that got them as high as the top 10. But what kept them there was them being in the WAC.
TCI Cable hadn’t made it to Walker yet, so my dad and I listened to this game on WJBO. I was seven, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
I'm a diehard LSU fan & was in Army basic training stationed at Fort Sill Oklahoma when this game was played! We were on a training exercise in the woods when i had to go back to base for KP duty the next day so i sneaked my walk-man with me & was able to listen to the game on the radio!!👁❤ LSU💜💛💯💪
8:48 "Fuller's gonna have nightmares about this" LMAO
One could make an argument that this prevented a Notre Dame-Auburn title game
That 4 down & 9 conversion, with under 2:20 left in the game, is one of the most underrated plays in LSU history.
Man oh man. Tell me the next time a Heisman candidate quarterback leads his team to a win with just 7 points…gets them on the final drive…and needs multiple fourth down conversions to do it…at home!
Thanks Brandon, I was in LSu drumline in 86 and was in the northendzone during this game....Phi Boota Roota
Took him 4 tries, but Fuller finally caught a pass.
12:39 the game winning touchdown that the fans scream so loud on it was registered as an earthquake 😂
It was actually the fans jumping in the stands that caused the earthquake.
The tigers purple jerseys look so much better than The white!
Jill Conner hell no
Not really. I honestly think that the white looks better but they need to wear purple more.
Chicken4life I think every time LSU is going to wear purple. They should wear those white helmets as well
Tech Zero nah everytime we wear purple with white helmets, we don’t play that great. For instance the Troy game, Vanderbilt game and another game this season
Chicken4life forgot that🤦♂️
if only to have a time machine
Eddie Fuller had a terrible game that night. Who could have thought that he would be the hero in one of LSU's greatest games?
12:39 - The play that created an ‘earthquake’.
Probably because Auburn was higher ranked and had a better overall win-loss record that year.
We could've beat LSU and played Notre Dame for a National Championship in 1988
lol but u didn't skrub LSU 4 lyfe
lsu don't want ND anymore=owned
Wow
war eagle, my dad was at that game too
I love LSU's drumline
Hard first date to top.....
So why did Auburn go to the sugar bowl if they lost this game?To lsu.
Because you still gotta have a better conference / overall W-L than a team even if you beat them!
Because Auburn would bring in more money with fans traveling and staying in hotels, etc...
That was the huge controversy.
Both had identical conference records, except LSU won the head to head. According to the Sugar Bowls own rules and regulations, LSU should have gone. It was a massive story with all kinds of conspiracies and ugly accusations.
Years later, someone who was on the Sugar Bowl committee came out and said it all boiled down to money.
Of course, that was his perception and what he had experienced.
This was before these giant TV contracts and payouts. Payouts from Bowl games were huge for these universities. The Sugar Bowl paid out around a million dollars to each school.
Much different than today, where schools get paid for TV appearances, and conferences make hundreds of millions in TV contracts, alone. Which is split between every conference member.
Whatever the bowls payout now is small potatoes compared to the TV money.
Still doesnt top the bluegrass miracle!
