Pro tip: if you have a coin in your item slot hold on to it until you hit another item box so the your second items is guaranteed to be a defensive item

I don't know if you know this, but when you have a coin, don’t spend it, they provide a 100% of probablity of getting a defensive ítem (banana or other useful ítems to defend).
If you didn't know, hope this tip I gave you is useful for you. Also another tip is that when you get 10 coins, you actually get a little more faster.

Oh yeah, just to clarified that if you’re using Toad… Waluigi & Koopa Troopa are Toad’s rivals. Yes! You heard me, they’re his rivals.
Each characters has their rivals to face against. For example, Mario Vs Peach & Bowser, Luigi Vs Mario, Metal Mario Vs Pink Gold Peach, Tanooki Mario Vs Cat Peach, etc.
So, I hope you’ll understand what I’m saying.
