In the Netherlands a lot of supermarkets have monthly magazines that people can get for free. In those magazines are lots of cheap, easy and healthy food made with products from the season. It has weekly plans, stuff for kids and a lot more. It is great. They should do something like this in all supermarkets

    • @CyeOutsider
      @CyeOutsider 8 років тому +3

+volkoren98 Yeah, we have that in Australia too. The Woolies and Coles supermarket chains have a monthly magazine featuring cost effective recipes and feature articles about seasonal fruits and vegetables. I always grab a copy when I spot them. It about advertising their produce and products, but its also a great source of food information and 'how to' info. As Jamie says, you can be commercial as well as educational. And in fact, Jamie is the official representative for Woolworths supermarkets and his recipes and endorsements appear in the publication.

I've always admired Jamie Oliver for bringing the school dinners debate to the front and being so candid about it. I grew up in the 1970s with quality school meals that in retrospect, I took for granted. How lucky I really was. Keep at it, Jamie! You are a huge inspiration.

Jamie Oliver is making changes in the food industry, educating people and making them aware of what they are putting into their bodies.
We need to take control of what we feed our families, there is an obesity epidemic that can be changed by the choices we make. Learn and educate your children and family to make nutritious and healthy food choices everyday.

Wow...! This guy is brilliant. He's a great speaker, full of charisma, and he has the passion to achieve what he truly desires. I admire him. I'm from South Korea, and obesity isn't considered a really big problem there. But here I realize today, after watching this video, people die out of obesity. Now I wish many people to fight it and overcome the world-wide problem.

I love the way you presented this to the audience and to the public. I have to share something with you as well. They considered my daughter in the lower measure of their percentile measurements at her grade school physical. The doctor actually looked at her and told her, "Go ahead and tell your mommy to get you some McDonalds Milkshakes." That statement infuriated me! I work daily at teaching my children health and nutrition and this physician said this. My daughter's response? "My mom doesn't let me have McDonalds." Years later, this same daughter goes out with her Middle School friends. The parents take the group to McDonalds. The parents of the girl are surprised that my daughter would rather not eat than to eat the food like products served at McDonalds. She ate when she got home, a healthy meal. The other child's parents told me what happened. My daughter's reward, other than a healthy meal, I bought her an outfit to wear. :) We need to care about each other and about the children. Our own and the friends of our own. Thank you Jamie. Thank you. facebook.com/jenniwhipple

I'm English and have been exposed to a lot of Jamie Oliver - and have always liked him. I became a TED enthusiast in 2008 when they 1st started putting the talks online, mainly through a technological fascination with a guy called Ray Kurzweil. When I knew that TED was honouring Jamie Oliver - I was fascinated to see how the US would react and have been delighted to re-introduce my fellow cynical UK friends to what is actually real. He represents the BEST in the English character. Amazing.

I bake bread every week and we don't eat high fructose corn syrup. We don't bring home soda and chips (mostly) and you are in part to thank. Between you and the movie Food Inc. we are changing our lives. We started a garden several years ago and my family grows our food. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Keep it up! Noreen

Great speech, Jamie!!! America, my country, really needs to wake up about this. Whether you're for or against health care reform in any capacity, it HAS to start with how we eat. Let's not keep dealing with the symptoms. Let's take on the source of the problem! That alone would fix a huge part of the health care issue, I truly believe.

I was in New York only for a week. In the heart of it. And there I saw only 4 or 5 shops, that sold not only canned beans for food. Yes, there were few sliced apples, but no salad, no full-grain bread, no raw meat. And that was what I craved when returning to Europe.
It's strange when what we are eating as normal food counts as healthy food in other countries.

Not that the UK is much better than the U.S. in general, but I grew up in a rural area of Wales and moved to York and got completely used to excellent farmers' markets, bakeries and home-grown herbs etc., then moved to Australia. Though you can actually get really good fruit here, there's not much meat worth buying except for beef and fish, and good breads and cheeses simply do not exist. Other than plastic-bag bread, you only have a choice of white fluff (the kind that curls up around the butter knife) or sourdough. I even asked a baker if he had anything other than these two kinds of bread and he looked confused and asked me "what else is there?"
That's like a chef in an Italian restaurant asking what else he should be cooking other than pizza and lasagne.

I'm sad to say I'm the first generation in my family to have neglected learning to cook at home. I wouldn't say it's impossible for me but the habit's just not there. Worrying to think that if I don't want or am unable to keep spending money left and right for restos and healthy takeouts the decline towards daily McDonald's meals will start. TY for your activism Jamie! Inspiring.

Jamie, here in Japan there is a business model that might really help this situation, at least at the home level. I think you are the person to bring this idea to the English speaking countries.
For only a slight markup, people can have dinner ingredients pre-measured for the dinner's recipe and delivered to the home every night fresh. The meals can be ordered by number of servings needed.
They come with recipe books and all. The model is made more profitable by offering limited choices. Each customer can only choose one of several weekly menus. Each menu has the entire week planned out for you. This probably makes preparing the ingredients easier as they are just measuring out loads of the same portions for the same recipes on any given night. The company only offers 7 things on this particular day so they only need seven lines to produce. They then offer a wide variety to make sure everyone gets a balanced diet by varying the items offered from day to day. Also, by planning out a week at a time it prevents poor choosing habits on the consumers end. The customers can't choose to use the system in an unhealthy way by only choosing their favorite menu items even though those items don't add up to a healthy overall diet.
The economy here is not so different, so similar prices should be possible. The result is about 4$ per serving. This is clearly affordable by most obese as they are typically purchasing fast food at far higher per serving prices. In addition, the servings are rather generous, my family orders just two servings and it feeds me, my wife and our daughters that are 6 and 2.
4$ per serving is your standard quality food. If a customer wants steaks and finer cuts of fish on the menu, they can choose to pay slightly more. It doesn't include certain core foods that are easier to buy in bulk such as rice.
I think this would take your great idea of 30 minute meals and makes them far more doable for some of the more busy parents. In addition, by providing some of the prep work for them, this model would allow you a few more options to add to your list of quick meals. Instead of books, you could pair the delivered ingredients with UA-cam video instructions to save a little by not having to distribute all that paper.
I love your show. If this idea sounds at all like something you would like to get going in the U.S. Just email me and I can tell you as much as I know about it. I am just a customer, but perhaps the idea is enough for someone in your position to run with.

Its funny how the kids couldn't recognize and label vegetables correctly, because here in India, we learn a new language by learning the names of vegetables.
Well, not just vegetables. Flowers, colors, fruits.... something that kids can recognize and associate with. We were taught four languages in school, all the same way.

When I moved to England and first lunch at work and I had rice with mushroom sauce or something alike. And people were asking me "You cooked that?" Cause there wasn't any label where did I bought it. "Well, yes? Of course I did." At first I didn't know what were they meaning by that. Yes, I coocked it, so I do every time. Than I understood when I saw them all ripping plastic lid of a small bowl with something in it with a colourful label. And they were asking me all sorts of questions like what I'm doing is magic or so. That's just the way I was raised. You are hungry, let me show you how to make something for yourself. I would buy something ready but just for a snack. Not as a main dish.
And it's so easy.. As long as you have receip, you just follow simple steps and that's it.

This video is so inspiring! Our daily lives are filled with disgusting foods. We complain about our weight, and obesity... but no one is willing to maintain a healthy life style! My generation would rather eat a bag of chips, or a greasy pizza; rather then a bowl of fresh fruits or veggies, or a home made fresh nutritional dinner! We are constantly finding ways to loose weight..... we'd rather go on a temporary diet, then have a nutritional healthy life style. I hope my generation will wake up, and realize nutrition is VERY important!! And if we don't pick up our act, our health will kill us!

Maybe there has not been much progress as written in posts below however, we need to begin the change as individuals. Our self, and our children at home. The change starts there. Don't wait for governments to make these changes, you can make the change right now, this day on your own table! You can make your children's lunch and take it to school. You can put healthy food on your own table. You can make the change now. So do not pass this off as no change has been made. the change begins with us now, In our own home, our own life, our choice, our responsibility. Choose health and choose the change.

I work in a school that he worked with and all the kids eat fruit and veg as if it was the most natural thing in the world ( which it is) My sons all cook mainly because he taught them to be honest ( through his TV shows) although I like to think I encouraged them as well. Nice to see this mission! I've been cooking all my life and will make it a personal goal to help with this mission and will be looking for ways to reach out to the public and help teach others in the community to cook.

In Italy is now airing "Jamie's Food Revolution", and I'm so shocked for what i've seen!!!
I grow up with a strong food culture, and I've never tought that somewhere the situation could be like that... It's really scary!
Cooking with fresh ingredients, and avoid as much as possible fast food or convenience food, for me is the normality... For this I'm grateful to my family and to the italian way of life!
This people will be grateful for what you're doing for them!!! You're saving their lifes...

he brought a tear to my eye. his words are so obvious brilliant and curious that even I remembered where I came from to a point of shock. Shock from where i come from is so strange in itself but a point of shock what i grew up with.. to be blunt it's like he told us we are beautiful trees and the only water or feed we've got was a bunch of piss.
    God bless Jamie Oliver.

I love how passionate he is in this talk. Yes, he's a bit overly-romantic in some parts, but you can tell how horrified and fustrating the situation is just from the first second - He never stopped pacing madly for even a second.

I agree with you on that, teaching children about food is important, but I was never taught on what to eat and what not to eat. I learned myself as I got older, most children do too. It's not a forced decision if you can think on your own.

Great speech. I think Ramsay is the most talented chef I've seen but it's great that Oliver is using his status and knowledge for such a good cause, in such a passionate way. And the fact he'd been rewarded with a platform at TED is awesome.
