- This is a quick video about what to expect during a VA Compensation and Disability Exam for hearing loss or tinnitus. I wanted to make this video so that you all have a better idea of what to expect during the exam. Before your exam, make sure you can answer the following questions:
1. What loud noises were you exposed to in the military? How frequently were you exposed to them?
2. When did your symptoms start / get worse?
3. How does tinnitus affect your day to day life?
4. Did you wear hearing protection?
Thats exactly the information I was needing. Much better than some of these other channels that claim to be there to help us vets and then talk about themselves and the guest doctor they have on. Really frustrating.

I am service connected for tinnitus. I did have a hearing exam and one test, the word recognition test, I scored 92 in the right ear and 88 in the left ear. With those scores I stayed at 0% for hearing. They did acknowledge that I have hearing loss but I scored very well on the word recognition. I have moderate hearing loss in both ears according to the VA. The word recognition test is a recording and the person administering the test determines how loud the word recognition test is. My test was very loud and I know it wasn't at the right level but my challenge didn't change the rating. I will try again this year and hope that the word recognition test is at a better level to fully determine my hearing loss.

Cheers for this, been searching for "what does it mean when your right ear is ringing?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Meniley Deyilliam Method - (do a search on google )? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering the real root cause of Tinnitus minus the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my old buddy Taylor at very last got astronomical results with it.

My ringing started in basic training. There was no ear protection offered back in 1970 and M16's started my ringing. Then a year in Vietnam made it much worse with a mortor shell dropping so close my ears and nose started dripping blood. I draw 40% for ringing, terrible hearing high frequency, unable to understand conversations with ambient noise in a room or building or store, type 2 diabetes from agent orange, and now I'm putting in for hypertension due to agent orange. It's always a long drawn out process, so older vets like me, 80, do it quick before the reaper comes to take you on a trip. How I made it to 80 I'll never know.

@@ANGST97B2P Well, where I live, there is no VA examiner within a couple hundred miles, so the VA has informed me that they will accept a DBQ from a private hospital that they frequently work with. I have a virtual C&P exam for PTSD Friday the 29th of September, so I'll schedule the tinnitus/migraines exam for sometime next week. All I can say is that we vets must keep fighting and not give up.

Thanks this help think of the ringing in my ears. IVe had hearing problems all my life. Had really bad ear aches and ear infections. I ve had ringing in my ears as gradually lost my hearing and then I xould only hear thunder. I remember my ringing in my ears getting worse after losing my hearing. And itcsort of comtinued after the operation.
I'm really sorry to hear that, but I certainly appreciate your comment and you sharing your experience. Unfortunately, tinnitus is something we will have to live with, and hopefully some day there will be a cure.
@@ThePartTimeEconomist thanks the tubes did work for a while, the ringing never stoped and my hearing got gradually worse as I got older. The tubes helped me hear again, but not perfectly. The ringing and I think some side effects to the opertion I think.
Also we jumped out of C119's many times, possibility the loudest aircraft used for troop jumps. Special ops sometimes jumped from 600 feet. Your parachute barely had time to open and often your helment hit the ground on your PLF (parachute landing fall) and left your whole head ringing and hurting.
That sounds like more to do with concussions then tinitus. Granted not saying you don't have tinitus but you might actually have repeated concussions due to banging your head. Might want to check that out as well A whole slew of problems come from repeated blows to the head.
Hey . I Hope all is well. I have a question for you or anyone watching. I have 10 percent for Tinnitus and during my C&P exam the doctor told me that I was going to be awarded the 10% and additionally he told me to file for hearing loss because my hearing loss was substantial and that he was linking it to my incident on active duty. He further told me to file within the next 3 months so they will have to use the report he was preparing. So I filed for the hearing loss and they attempted to schedule me for another C&P exam through "Veterans evaluations services" . Its a private company the VA uses to do exams. I then I called the VA and they agreed with me that they will go off the first C&P exam. The term they used was to "Use original exam findings". But they they asked me to cancel the exam. I thought that was odd and they said it was because they would be able to cancel it in time and that if they didnt cancel it in time I wouldve had a no show on my record. So I went along and cancelled it. My question is - have you seen this before and does me cancelling it look bad for me?? I know Hearing loss is probably going to be a zero percentage, but since the C& P Doc told me to file i figured I had nothing to lose and I thought it wold be good to have the Hearing Loss service connected regardless of the percentage because I have Migraines and Anxiety ready to go as "Secondary" conditions to my service connected Tinnitus. Would love to know your thoughts. Oh , one more thing , My MOS was (BU) Builder in the Navy and thats on the DOD Presumption list for noise and hearing related conditions . Thank you. I had a horrible examiner, she didn't ask me any of these questions. The examiner had a horrible attitude, it was no surprise when I got the denied letter for tinitus. 🤢

I got out of the military Dec 96’ had annual hearing test since. They always told me “stop pushing the button there’s no beep” last year had a hearing test while working for DOD, and the Doc told me that’s a sign of Tinittis, I never knew that. I’m worried they will not give me anything for it, how do I prove I have it and get something for it?
Tinnitus never goes away. Sometimes worse than other times. but never goes away. in my case.... And it started in service while in field artillery in Germany.

I just had my test today. The DR was kind of wise ass. She said I have normal hearing loss nothing requiring hearing aid. I hope they don’t deny my tinnitus based on that. In my case they didn’t inject static on one ear while I repeated the words.

I didn't have any background noise. It was purely quiet when they asked to repeat the words. (This situation NEVER happens in real life) All the rest of your info would be useful to new claimers. TY

Very true! You are in a sound proof room when the test is given to repeat words. This is NOT a real life situation! They should give a test where they give you the test to repeat words with background chatter.
So, your saying they still don't know what causes Tinnitus. I wish they would figure it out. Mine's getting loud.
I have no records talking about tinnitus but it started 20 years ago when I was an airman listing to electronic signals. Can I still make a claim? It’s gotten worse over the years.
Along with my Service-connected Tinnitus I was also diagnosed with Severe migraines and Hyperacusis as directly related to my Tinnitus . I will be filing secondary claims for each as I have Nexus letters for both as well. Any advise for me ? Also on the VA form where it asks how to decriibe that your Migraines are connected to my Tinnitus. What should I write? Thank you ,.
I wish I could help, but I've got no clue on that one. They might be trying to see if the ringing causes the migraine or if both symptoms appear at the same time, but I really don't know there.

Just did my C&P for tinnitus.
I had the exact same testing done but I had to verbally say “yes” for the booth tests.
And the audiologists didn’t even ask me about my tinnitus. The only thing for that was a form they had me fill out where I had to write down where it stated and dates etc.
She jus lt had me do the testing, she filled out the DBQ and that was it, on to my elbow C&P lol
The ringing started immediately after the exposure to the loud noise, The issue is that eventually it stopped going away after a day or so.

Hey ,, I have a question. So i went for my C&P exam yesterday and it was with a private party Doctor /Audiologist contracted by the VA for my Tinnitus claim. It went astonishing well and he told me he was ruling in my favor and giving me the "service Connection". I was given a hearing test and he said it exactly matched the private party hearing test I was given months ago and it was from the same Doctor that gave me my Nexus letter, and he further said its impossible to fake. But he also said that I have moderate hearing loss and further said I should've filed for that along with my Tinnitus claim. He also said that if I decide to add the hearing loss claim within 3 months he would approve it and its service-connected due to the C&P report he prepared and the fact that I was a NAVY Builder (BU) which is on the DOD Tinnitus presumption list its all good. But he said it MAY not get me above the 10% threshold. So is it worth it to add the hearing loss claim and having it approved even if it doesnt raise my percentage??????? He also said I should go to the VA and get hearing aids. Thank you for your time . Whats your opinion?
I'm a bit confused as when I went the doctors themselves didn't approve/deny my conditions. Rather it gets sent to the VA raters and they approved/denied it. Unfortunately, I can't help there, but I can say that VA math is quite strange and ratings don't always add up like you think they would. If you search for "Hill and Ponton VA Calculator" you can find an awesome tool to see if adding an additional 10% would bump you up or not.
I will just wait and see what happens. I won’t file anything additional until my Tinnitus gets approved. Then when/if I get approved I will decide. Is it unusual to have my medical records lost ?

The exam was about 25 minutes in total. I got there a little before my appointment and they were able to see me early.
The Part Time Economist sir i went to audiology feb 15 i did that but the audiologist say this test not related to your claim do i have to do another test for that ? i call them again she said i have to file a hearing loss in the VSO then the VSO the one gonna schedule me for the audiogram test in relation to my claim ... and also the audiologist referal me to ENT ... so do i have to file a claim first to VSO in order to have another audio exam ?? please replya asap thank u ..

so on the white noise part of the exam, if you can hear the commands during that part, is your hearing good
Yes. If you can differentiate between "wall" and "ball" while having one ear filled with noise, it shows that your hearing is good at differentiating sounds. You could still have bad hearing if you did bad on the beep test though. I am not an expert, but I think each test is looking for a different kind of hearing loss. So you might do good on the white noise test but bad on the beep test.
My tinnitus gets worse at times .but seems to be getting altogether worse . I had tubes in my ears as a kid . Air craft carrier engine room .

70 percent disability ptsd and tinnitus 3 months ago someone dis decided to turn up the volume , dizzy and tired all the time now absolutely debilitating, already checked lungs, brains , and arteries going to try for 90 percent and stay home
Is a test safe if you have Tinnitus?
If you have some hearing lost and not eligible for a hearing aid, can you still be rated at 10 -20%?

To decide your claim, we need to complete your in-person claim exam. But we don’t know yet when we’ll be able to schedule your exam. We stopped scheduling in-person claim exams because of COVID-19. Now we’re starting to schedule these exams again in many locations. Find out where we offer in-person exams now.

I was just sent a letter from QTC saying that Ill be getting a C&P exam.
Im nervous. But I did get a Nexus letter from a renowned Ear surgeon saying my Tinnitus is directly related and was caused by my incident while on Active duty.
I just filed for Tinnitus I was a Navy Seabee and suffered with Tinnitus for years. My problem is I have medical evidence from a private doctor but i dont have any evidence to support from when it happened , which was in 1990. I went to my Senior Chief back then and he told me not to report it because they would hold it against me blah blah blah. So i dealt with it for years until i learned from You tube that I can try to claim it. So i havent even gone for VA Medical exam yet . The VA contacted me and said everything looks good and they will contact me regarding my exam when its scheduled. Any thoughts ??

I sent all my paperwork in along with my nexus letter which unequivocally states my tinnitus was directly caused by my incident while on active duty. The doctor stated that with a high degree of medical certainty that this was caused by the incident I explained while I was on Active duty . I have not been scheduled for any exam yet.
Two things that stand out to me and Id love to hear your opining. First is I don't have any sick bay medical records from the Navy because this was the late 80's and I tried to report it but was strongly advised not to, due to the fact that it happened at weapons training and if I did it could cause the NCO's in charge to possibly face discipline. Second is on my personal web page that lists all data with the VA regarding my case , it says they may make a decision without giving me an exam. Dont know what that means . Any thoughts ??
I only collect $165 month for tinnitus... what am i doing wrong?
I was only in the reserves BUT my active duty was engineering battalion explosives training. We actually blew shit up with TNT dynamite,C4, various mines claymore and grenades. One thing that happened which made me almost deaf for a day was a flash bang thrown at me which went off RIGHT next to my HEAD ....I have had ringing in my years ever since ...I had no idea there was compensation for it ...it really made me mad what that drill sergeant I think deliberately did to me doing a live fire exercise So my question is does 4 1/2 months of active training count as "veteran" ? Or does one actually have to have been regular arms or activated reserve in war time etc?? I would so love to be recompensed for the damage I feel that asshole did to me
You ARE still a veteran... I was in in 2008 until 2012 never deployed... only experienced training. I am still considered a veteran.

I think that you will probably have to file again separately for the hearing loss. When you go to a CP exam, the VA is looking to see if there is evidence to support the disabilities that you claimed. I haven't heard of the VA finding something that a service member didn't claim and giving it to them anyway. Best of luck!

1975 a bunch of ncos lined us up 450 ft away from a roaring jet engine. I had a general hearing test it wasn't for tinnitus . They said I had lost some hearing. I used to get a really loud buzz electrical kind of tone but that stopped and I mentioned it stopped and I hadn't had it for a long time. Now I feel stupid because I'm on record as saying it hasn't happened for a long time. VA if I could put an ad on in the medical record. They said yes and I'm going to do that. Because at night when it's quiet it's hard to sleep with the tinnitus constantly ringing in my ears it's not loud but there's two levels and I wonder if anybody else has the same situation.

I am not a VA rater, but it certainly seems possible that you could get it depending on how bad your symptoms are and how you do on the exams. If you google "Duty MOS Noise Exposure Listing" you will see that the VA lists some occupations as "High Risk" for hearing loss, and others are rated as "Moderate" or "Low Risk." Depending on whether you were serving in a low risk or high risk MOS, this could affect their decision.
They didn’t play any other noise when I did the speech recognition test. They also didn’t ask anything about tinnitus even though that’s what I went for

I honestly don't know about that. I know that I only claimed tinnitus, but they evaluated me for hearing loss as well. I obviously didn't have any, but if I would have had hearing loss, I don't know if they would have counted that or not

Worked on a Claymore range, @ Bragg, & multiple other ranges training El Salvadoran troops & ROTC summer training camps, always around big booms, then on Green Ramp waiting for our taxi to go play @ Bragg, short mortar rounds going off, yup now the phone rings, headaches etc. if I could answer the phone they could keep their % drives me nuts, & to think the Orange or yellow foam ear plugs were to prevent damage come live in my Vodka Fukit world. I should have went to college and road the free FJB tuition train.
I don't know how effective the ear plugs were either. I always wore mine, but they can only do so much when you're inches away from a howitzer on a salute detail or the engineers are blowing a door off a building. Thanks for stopping by.
For all the males trying to get tinnitus rating. If you have a talkative female in ur life. Turn the TV on , get on the phone internet and have her sit next to you just blabbing away. It should help with the hearing test part.
If you had to raise your hand when you heard a noice or repeat words back to the tester, how do you know they didn’t write down whatever they want. Sounds very fishy. A machine has a print out and can’t be manipulated (easily) where as a person writing results can definitely cheat against you.
Will lack of military sick bay records ruin my Tinnitus claim ?
From the VA Website, "Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services, the Veteran’s character of discharge or service must be under other than dishonorable conditions (e.g., honorable, under honorable conditions, general). " So, as long as you aren't dishonorable, sounds like you should be good.
Fucking sucks man. I think my hearing is getting worse the second. I'm 31, I wear hearing aids, and i think i honestly piss people off simply because i repeat everything like 10 times. You can obviously see hearing aids if i turn around. :' ( idk what to do. Lady asked me for something, and my response was Excuse me? she repeated it again, and my response is, I"M SORRY? she legit gave me a evil look.. I can't fucking help it, i just can't... ugh and the TINNITUS DRIVES ME CRAZYYYYY...
I did the speech test but there was no background noise, was test performed incorrectly?, I left the test wondering how that determined my hearing loss when it felt like someone was literally talking directly into my ear .
I couldn't tell you. all I know is what they did on my exam. I don't know if there is some standardized protocol for what they are supposed to do. Good luck on your claim though.

Tinnitus filed, C&p exam completed, waited and waited, award letter received, hopeful, letter opened, read NOT service connected, anxiety and depression take over, negative thoughts racing, higher-level appeal questionable, hatred and sadness settling in, Smoking cigs for weeks to come highly likely. I'm really sorry to hear that. So, did they find evidence of tinnitus but just couldn't connect it to your service, or did they not find tinnitus at all? If you don't mind me asking, what was your MOS? I think that a lot of their decision about hearing loss/tinnitus comes from whether or not your MOS is listed as "high risk" on one of their forms. If you were a high risk MOS like 11B, 13F, etc, it might make sense to talk to your VSO and think about an appeal.
The Part Time Economist my award letter stated no evidence of Tinnitus in military records and no medical diagnosis in civilian medical records (post-military) in a reasonable amount of time. My Marine MOS is Aviation Maintenance (6072) “Highly-likely.” My award letter stated that I do in fact have a diagnosis of Tinnitus. Medical examiner stated in letter no link between my tinnitus and military service - stated that my tinnitus is most likely do to other factors. I did file disability claim almost 20 years after I got out of the military. I am considering HLR and contacting my VSO, DAV. Besides, an appeal can’t hurt me, right?! Lol🇺🇸😎
@@csucujo Best of luck to you. It is important to follow all the steps, gather documentation, etc, but at the end of the day, it seems like sometimes it simply comes down to luck and how the cards fall.

Pender RBLX Brother...always appeal! Always. I have fought for my service connected depression compensation for 10 years. Went all the way to the BVA and got remanded back to the Columbia, SC regional office. My C&P examiner took one look at my records and her jaw literally dropped. Seems like my 1st examiner said I had a family history of depression that was NOT aggravated by my naval service. The BVA remand decision disagreed. All I have to do is stay alive until my final decision is prepared and I will get 10 years of back pay. FIGHT for what you have coming! Never give up! We got your six.
Can they prove that you have tinnitus by asking you questions about your MOS and military experience alone? I have a c&p exam coming up, and I know I have tinnitus. I just don’t have supporting evidence from a doctor or from sick call.
There is a list of "high risk" mos that are assumed to be at a higher risk of hearing loss/tinnitus. If you were one of those MOS, that can help, but also be sure to mention anything else. If you were in supply, that might not be a high risk mos, but maybe you got tasked out on some detail that exposed you to loud noise. EX: salute detail, or maybe you got deployed and pulled security on a flightline. Anything that can show you were exposed to that loud noise helps,
I was a 25U but rode the gun for the commanders truck in OEF and I did see direct combat and was issued a CAB.
So for the tinnitus date, I just wrote down the same date my CAB was awarded for the firefight we were in. I really dont see how they can deny that but I was around plenty other explosions. Even as a Paratrooper I tell people that the C17’s and 130’s were loud as hell and they didn’t always give us ear plugs.
But I used my CAB date. I just got out of the exam so we’ll see what they say!

Theyre sending me to a private Doctor, an Audiologist. Not the VA
The best I could say is to be honest and don't downplay what you went through. If you can't hear something, you can't hear it. If you have ringing in your ears, you have ringing in your ears. If you have a symptom, this isn't the time to ""soldier on" and act like its no big deal. Don't exaggerate of course, but if something is causing you trouble, they need to know the extent of that trouble to give an accurate assessment. Best of luck.
Hey ,, I have a question. So i went for my C&P exam yesterday and it was with a private party Doctor /Audiologist. It went astonishing well and he told me he was ruling in my favor and giving me the "service Connection". I was given a hearing test and he said it exactly matched the private party hearing test I was given months ago, and he said that's impossible to fake. But he also said that I have hearing loss and further said I should've filed for that along with my Tinnitus claim. He also said that if I decide to add the hearing loss claim within 3 months it would be approved and service-connected due to yesterday's C&P report he prepared. But he said it MAY not get me above the 10% threshold. So is it worth it to add the hearing loss claim and having it approved even if it doesnt raise my percentage? He also said I should go to the VA and get hearing aids. Thank you for your time .

I know national guards at 80.pct and vietnam war veterans at 10.pct. my friend carried the m60 in vietnam he got 10 pct hearing loss a national guard got 80.pct. and he is not even considered a veteran. Sometimes they take 2 minute's, and screw the VA out of hundreds of dollars every few minutes
Folks w/ tinnitus need to start pressing the VA to look into possible brain inflammation as a possible cause. Good luck
