Roy Clarke is the master of comedic banter. With Open All Hours, Last of the Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances he created some of the most memorable characters in British sitcom history
You can see why its a loved series.🤗🤗
Arkwright is a true Yorkshireman.Tight.He squeezed the pound notes so tightly the Queens eyed watered...thats a Benny Hill reference who was reputed to be tight.
I thought Benny Hill was (relatively) Generous, but never cashed the cheques he was paid - they were behind the clock when he died.
There is a shop in the town I live in with two cash registers like this one,the shop owner has called them Arkwright and Granville.
Ronnie is true genius and the guy playing Grenville is an amazing actor in his own right , love these guys
The mix of banter, props & physical comedy adds up to a wonderful show of laughs. I'm sure the women customers are based on real life.
Love to watch you enjoy this programme, hope you and your family are well. Love from the UK ❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
No one can hate this pair 😋😋
Watch in 70s on tv, watched ever since, video, now on net and also dvd...a classic in all senses of the word. Cheers
One of my favourites thanks for the reaction. 😂
Apparently the draw on the till was operated by a person in the back with a with a broom handle pushing it in and out so as to get the speed. The shop used for the external scenes is actually a hair dressers in Doncaster UK and it hasn't got a basement, that was a film set. It was threatened with demolition a few years back as part of a redevelopment scheme but survived. It also used in the sequel 'Still open all hours'' where Granville (still played by David Jason, and also has a few characters from the original series) has inherited the shop along with all of his uncles tricks an schemes.
And below this vlog is an advert for toilet rolls😂😂😂
OMG Alan thank you for little treat on a wet Sunday night in Glasgow (Scotland)mum also laughed loud @ the bit where he mentioned f-f-f-f-f-fancy man & the Mavis scenes in fact all of it is fantastic as you said why did you leave it so so long to watching open all hours please please don’t leave it so long for episode 4 & onwards love to the family as always mate peace mate ✌️ ps loved father ted episode can’t wait for more OFAH Derry girls & father ted & open all hours x
There isn’t anything like this out there anymore. Great review
Loved your reaction on this, two of our best loved characters, thank you
That box of Griddles crisps brings back memories, I could go for a bag right now.
This is my favourite episode! My great aunt and uncle lived very near to where this was filmed in Doncaster in England.
Quality like this will never be seen again , what a shame .
Only Fools and Horses .David Jason was the lead. Most popular comedy series ever in UK.
One of the best episodes in the whole series (IMHO). The writing and that sheepdog! 🐶
A glimpse into the past of how corner shops were an integral part of the community, at one time. Although, by the time these episodes were made, it was already on the wane. Arkwright was, of course, always opportunistic when trying to sell items he, 'over-stocked', on. All part of his charm, I guess. Granville being the perfect opposite to bounce everything off. Nurse Gladys didn't get much of a look-in, in this episode, but, 'wavy Mavis', was up to her usual indecisive standard! This was the one and only time we got to see the trap door and cellar, if memory serves me right.
Keeping up appearances is gold Must react
Nice, gentle entertainment, best wishes to you and yours, Mr. Beard!!
Ronnie Barker was such a great comic actor over so many years and his characters are always believable and the humour subtle . to see him with David Jason who went on to become as good , if not better is such a treat. David went on to add some more serious roles in A touch of Frost , and has revisited this in Still open all hours .
Well done,Alan(EB),nice to see Open All Hours back on the viewing list ! 👌👍
P.S. Got to love the regular family banter between Arkwright and nephew Granville, but Kathy Staff [Mrs.Blewitt] made her name as the ultimate '(huosewife)battle-axe' [ie see LOTSW's Nora Batty]. 😂
It was nice to see Kathy Staff and Ronnie Barker again. You probably know that 'still open all hours' was made years after this series with Ganville in charge of the shop
I recommend a series, the only one made called Clarence. It had Ronnie Barker as a very short-sighted man and his constant escapades. You can find it on UA-cam. It's a pity they only made one series, it's very funny
You'll never regret watching Ronnie Barker and this is one of his best.
Such a classic series for sure. Ronnie and David are perfect together.
I just sent your vid to my friends in Mayland. I hope they find it as enjoyable as you do. 😂😂
You should watch steptoe and son 😂😂😂 or till death us do part 😂😂😂 that's some old British comedy
Great cast and excellent writing
So glad you're back to this show
As someone from Chesterfield I can confirm she’s right, nothing good happens in Chesterfield.😂😂😂😂
This show is my default go to when I need to wind down and just go Ahhhhhhhhh !
Alan, its great to see you revisiting Open All Hours.👍
Thank you for reacquainting me with OAH. I grew up on amazing stuff like this and your reactions do it justice. We sincerely thank you, Keith & Jill now very happy in Australia
We all used to watch this when it was shown on British TV! Ronnie Barker was one of the best comedians we had back then and then, David Jenson going onto Only Falls and Horses too! Great shows!
Every small town in Lancashire and Yorkshire had a corner shop just like this. You need to understand that this was a typical mineing town getting ready to go to work down the coal pit. The coughing was a result of exposure to coal dust.
Ronnie Barker the best unrecognised actor. Comedic perfection. His Fat Belly Jones US country singer would be a blast for you!
You’d Love Last of the summer wine.. Some old geezers in Yorkshire .. but it’s humorous
Ref the "sheep dog" at the time there was a telly advert for a company called Dulox( ed; check spelling) that used an Old English Sheep Dog, it was very popular :)
Ronnie Barker, the big one was a comedy genius, creating so many top class characters. He also wrote many sketches under his own name and several nome-de-plumes, such as Gerald Willey, he started on BBC radio in the late fifties on a radio show called The Navy Lark the moved to television under the tutelage of David Frost, working with John Cleese and Ronnie Corbett.
He and Corbett had a long running t.v. show called The Two Ronnie's.
Might be worth having a look at their three men sketch Cleese, Barker and Corbett a fantastic sketch only two minutes long,
Now I am craving a fig biscuit...and Oxtail Soup :(
That old English sheepdog was adorable
"Fiiig Biscuits!!"
...This was good, but my favourite episode was the one where they were trying to make their own firelighters.
Sometimes it's difficult to watch episodes, there's too many good episodes of other shows that you get hooked into haha
The toilet rolls are like Eve in the garden being told not to eatvthe apple......
Pure innocent fun northen England in the 1970's/ early 80's
its odd you should say he hears more gossip than the hairdresser as in real life the shop front that is filmed as the exterior was and still is a hairdresser :D
Genius comedy for ALL
David Jason and Ronnie Barker. Two legends!
Classic 🥰
did you know after Ronnie barker had past for the 40th anniversary of the show the made another series called still open all hours with David Jason as Granville now the shop owner running it with his son
Im sure barker used to write a lot but did it under pseudonym man had many fingers in many pi pi pi pi pies
See if you can find Ronnie Barkers episode of Porridge Series 2, E5 - Happy Release where Blanco (David Jason) is cheated by Norris.. I saw Blanco a couple of times before I realized it was David Jason
Well... Lucky ole 'Mrs. Beard'!...😉😆Great episode. Love this show, thanks!🇬🇧
Try watching David Jason in another Great Comedy - Only Fools & Horses. Long running series. Absolutely Brilliant.🇬🇧😊
Love Your Reviews EB
HILARIOUS ❤ UK
If there a thing on shopping,. The smaller an item the more expensive.
he should watch four candles
The cybermen are the second oldest doctor who villain. It was 1966 and the last story of William Hartnell. Because Hollywood was buying the daleks for a series of films the bbc needed to replace their prime baddie. The second doctor sees them the most and I consider this the golden age of the cybermen. Most of these episodes were destroyed when the bbc wiped many tapes. Although a lot have been restored mainly using cartoon. Watch out for tomb of the cybermen it is considered as classic cybermen as genesis of the daleks was for the daleks
Brilliant show very funny
Love it 😂😂
Love the Brit series. So well done! Kudos!😂😂😂😂
All before the vile supermarket's

Those were the days when people paid by cash...now if you try paying by cash they look at you if your a bank robber.👍🤭
Ha ha, he was gaslighting the doubtful customer 😅
What happened to your UK visit? Were you just blowing smoke?
No, I plan on visiting. Things have worked out the way I've wanted to. I planned on visiting next month but I announced it last year and everything fell off a cliff views wise which affects my ability to do things, like travel.
👌😂😂😂❤❤
Have you watched Phoenix Nights yet ?
Couldnt get into it
🦀💜👍👍💜
Try watching "it ain't half hot mum" . Now thats funny..
Generous to a f f f f fault.
Open All Hours is a classic but I think Porridge was even better, also with Ronnie Barker. There isn't one single episode that's not funny.
😁 ✌ 🇬🇧 🏴
Been waiting for this here for a long time YES, don't be to long for the next one😂😂😂❤ Oh and if you think David Jason is good here then PLEASE DO only fools and horses, here on UA-cam
I live in Chesterfield, I remember when I first saw this with my family, very odd to get a mention on TV.
I always like to think that Kathy Staff's characters of Mrs Blewitt and Nora Batty were related.
You can't help but admire Arkwright to sell you anything , I have always wondered between him and his female equivalent from Last of the Summerwine - Aunty Wainwright who was the better seller?
