Yes, I did enjoy it. Checkout the covers by Weezer, also Careless Whisper by Seether and Easy by Faith No More. Some songs have been covered many times and have a few strong but different versions. It might be interesting for you to do one of those and compare multiple versions. One that comes to mind is Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics covered by Marylin Manson, Weezer and others. Another good one might be the Beatles - Come Together covered by Aerosmith. Similar, both good, but enough differences to make it interesting for you to choose. And speaking of Aerosmith covers, try Remember (Walking in the Sand) original by the Shangri-las. 2 Judas Priest covers Green Manilishi - Fleetwood Mac and Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez and speaking of Joan Baez how about Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You covered by Zeppelin. That should keep you busy, not to mention highly entertained. I’m really looking forward to it.
Some of the songs I mentioned are ones where I heard the cover versions first and loved them and learned about the original versions later. It’s interesting that these “heavier” bands drew inspiration from the acoustic, singer-songwriter folk songs. But what is also great and apparent is that a great piece of art, great writing stands up no matter what and a great artist can interpret and transform it into a completely different style and it can still be great and move the listener emotionally.
Yes, great concept. Yes I am bias, but McCartney's version is just so iconic. Check out his live version at the 2005 Super Bowl. ua-cam.com/video/PRv6GvDRx9k/v-deo.html Please add to you list The Kinks "Girl You Really Got Me" and Van Halen's version. And Martha and the Vandela's "Dancing In The Street" and Van Halen's version. Thanks and God Bless.
Funny story...when GnR's version came out, McCartney's kids were in school and their friends loved the song. When his kids said well actually our dad wrote it and sang it first, no one believed them, lol.
Wings' live version is pretty rockin' too. McCartney has the bigger budget. This is the part of his show where he lights off the fireworks and explosions.
McCartney! I’ve seen him 5 times, always plays this. Saw him this past spring on Got Back Tour & at 80 still rockin! A musical genius. G&R does a solid cover! Thx for all your great reactions. Shows my age but I’m so grateful that I grew up in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. Such great music.
I absolutely love this idea of comparing versions of songs! On this one, although I love Axl, I have to go with the original Paul McCartney & Wings. Paul McCartney is a musical genius and the sounds incorporated in the original is just so intriguing! I remember my first time hearing this song on the radio; I was blown away and even more so through headphones once I bought the album. Looking forward to future comparisons.
Yeah, I mean C'mon ..Axl and company good but it's done differently. The original is how it's supposed to sound. GNR was smart to keep it in their wheelhouse. So it's a nice version but not the definitive one
Guns n Roses all the way for me. But i'm a massive fan girl of Axl ( can 47 year olds be classed as a fan girl? ha ) so no matter what, i'll pick them. Great video as always.
I love both versions. I listen to whichever I’m more in the mood for at the time. Can’t go wrong. FYI, U2 also did All Along The Watchtower. You could do 3 of them.
YESSS!! I saw Paul McCartney perform this live in San Antonio it was awesome!!! CHECKOUT George michael and Queen, somebody to love and Queen with Freddie Mercury as well. This is a FANTASTIC deuel
Better than either of these versions is when Paul McCartney does it live. Lots of fireworks, bombast and over-the-topness. The fireworks are used like another percussion instrument, which adds balls.
I've seen both live versions and I totally love Paul McCartney and Wings over GNR. although both are great there is definitely a special place in my heart for Linda and Paul McCartney!
I thought that was an original? It's a cover? I thought there were only 2 covers on those albums...this one and knockin on heaven's door? Here I've been giving Axel credit for those phenomenal lyrics and they aren't his.
That's fair. Both versions are really good for different reasons. GNR took a great song and made it a a hard rock version that fits in perfectly at their concerts. I'll bet Paul McCartney appreciated their version. Both really good, depending on what you're in the mood for.
Oh Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison vs Van Halen is one you might consider. If you do you should definitely do the Intruder/Oh pretty woman version by VH they need to be heard together
I've never been able to pick a favorite. They both have different parts that balance out. McCartney's vocals, per usual, are amazing. GnR took it and added a more modern sound at the time. I have both on my playlist. It's impossible to me.
Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through by Jim Steinman VS Meatloaf. Steinman originally wrote the song for Meatloaf but he didn't do it at the time so Steinman decided to record it himself. Thirteen years later, Meatloaf finally decided to record his own version of it. I'm really curious to see which version you'd prefer, I love them both.
As an old guy, who grew up with the Beatles, I'd have to go with Paul & Wings. Actually saw "Live and Let Die" in the theater when it came out. Guns n Roses cover is really good. There are live versions from both here on UA-cam. Now I guess you gotta watch the movie?
Hmm. This actually surprised me. I'm very familiar with both versions. I went into this thinking that GnR would be my favorite version. HUGE GnR fan. I've never been the biggest Beatles (and the individuals) fan. Not saying I don't like them, but I never appreciated them very much when I was younger. I definitely do now. However I think I actually like Paul's version a TINY bit better!!!!! Maybe it's because you played it first? I don't know. I think I hadn't really thought about the fact that Paul's version is pretty hard too. So, thank you for doing them "side by side". It made me think more than usual about the song. Nice reactions. I'm quickly becoming a fan of you. I keep checking back because I DEFINITELY want to see your continuation of the Les Miserables 10th anniversary concert. lol. (Only part 1 has been released by you so far, at this point)
You had to go and pick this for your first Vs. This has been weighing on me for a long time, but I have to go with Paul. If you're gonna beat the original, you really gotta take the song to an entire new and great place. As great as the GnR cover is, it just doesn't reach that next level for me. I was thinking about this concept of covers not too long ago, and I'm glad you've decided to do it.
"What is this?" "This" is the theme song from the James Bond 007 movie of the same title. C'mon man. Won an Oscar and everything. Live a little...watch the movie. See the beautiful young Jane Seymour (smokin' hot). The 2nd best Bond (Roger Moore)...and the infamous bayou sheriff. ha ha haaa
Hey Salvo Nice format! As a bass player and devoted Beatles/McCartney fan I naturally going to lean toward the back Wings version hands down. If you're going to check out live versions, may I suggest the one from the Wings concert film Rock Show. You mentioned Let's Spend the Night Together by The Stones and Bowie... Great choice. Here are a few more... Move Over by Janis Joplin and Slade Crazy Horses by The Osmands and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band Superstition by Stevie Wonder and Beck, Bogert and Approve Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo by Johnny Winter And and Rick Derringer Roll Over Beethoven by Chuck Berry and ELO Jumpin' Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones and Leon Russell White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground and Mick Ronson Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix and Derek and the Dominos This Flight Tonight by Joni Mitchell and Nazareth Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix Stayin' Alive by The Bee Gees and Bruce Springsteen New York State of Mind by Billy Joel and Barbra Streisand Have fun with the format. Get into deep dives, spontaneously throw in live versions for further comparisons. I'm definitely looking forward to more of these.

In my mind the original of any legendary epic classic the original will almost always have the edge, especially when it was written and composed by that original artist. Hendrix’s version of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower being an exception for me. Also, like Manfred Mann’s version of Blinded by the Light better. Anyway, back to this, I also think it’s great the level of contrast and “heaviness,” “dramatic epicness” the original is able to create with the orchestra even without super loud, heavily distorted guitars. Just killer composition and orchestration mastery by Paul and his “blissful” voice only adds to the contrast between the 2 parts of the song. Nothing against G’n’R, it was a decent cover. Generally a band covers a song to pay homage and respect the original song and artist and maybe add their own little spin or personality to it and I think they did that, but no way is it better. That said if either version comes on I’m listening to it, not turning it off. Great, classic song from McCartney.
Joe Cockers version of with a little help from my friends rivals or surpasses the Beatles version as do many other of his covers the same can be said even better by Linda Rondstadt whos covers almost always outshine the original not to mention the Pentatonix and let me add the the Beatles were 1 of the best cover bands ever
@@robertkern9911 yes, agreed. 👏👏👏 I don't know if I'd heard Paul's version before. I have to agree with you, his was better. Guns n Roses is an acquired taste, Axl's vocals aren't for everyone. I do like Paul's version tho We want more plzz!
Personally, I *love* the orchestra-going-bonkers thing of the original in this case, so Wings takes it for me. Although GnR making it more of a singalong stadium rock thing totally works. There have been some great Bond themes over the years. I'm particularly fond of Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name"- give that a try sometime. ;) As far as comparing originals to cover versions like this, I don't see any hard & fast formula.... if you're feeling something in particular, pause & talk about it. We'll know which ones are catching your ear more by the fact those will be longer than others! :)
Man Salvo, they are not absolutely great!! I’m going with Wings, The originators of this song. Bro, Wings had a lot of great very unique songs. Thx bro. Rock on!!¡
Paul McCartney and Wings, not Paul McCartney and THE Wings. There is no "the." Paul really rocks it in concert, complete with fireworks and explosions.
You never heard Paul McCartney before? Have you ever heard any of the Beatles' songs? Paul McCartney was one of the Beatles. Surely you have heard some of their songs somewhere and maybe didn't know who it was! TIME to make a deep dive in to the BEATLES as well as Paul McCartney's solo works.
Gotta go with Wings. If I can make a suggestion, try Sympathy for the Devil. Original by The Rolling Stones and the cover by Guns n Roses. The GnR version plays over the end credits of Interview with the Vampire.
You should see when Paul does this in concert, he does it every concert he has ever done. During the instrumental part, there are flash pots going off in front of the stage and behind the band, laser beams everywhere and if it is in an outdoor venue they also set off fireworks behind the stadium... ua-cam.com/video/NRqfnYPOoU8/v-deo.html and when the song finishes, like it does on this recorded version, they set off a huge BANG with smoke, Paul has to cover his ears. It's always the highlight of his live shows.. I don't care for Axel Rose's voice, it just seems very "wobbly" to me. For me, it is hard to listen to.
You've never heard Paul McCartney? THE F*CK? The Beatles? How can you have not heard The Beatles? SMDH. You young people. LOL! Dude...like seriously...how can you have a music reaction channel and not have listened to The Beatles and Paul McCartney? That's like saying you're a rabid basketball fan but don't know who Michael Jordan is...while wearing a pair of Air Jordans... PS - Check out McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed. Everybody talks about Axl vocal range - 5 octaves but Macca is his right there with a 5 octave range himself. And he writes better songs...
Hey! To be clear I have I have “heard” Of both I just haven’t listened to either. That was a bit confusing sorry for the confusion there. I haven’t got to either one on this channel but it’s been on my long list to listen to Paul McCartney and now I will be definitely starting a rabbit hole with him considering how much I enjoyed his vocal! I will check out your suggestion thanks 👍
@@SalvoG if you react to Maybe I’m Amazed, a fun video idea that no one else has done would be reacting to both the studio and live versions. Both versions are really good and different people will say each is better
Good idea to do this comparative review. In this case I would give Paul McC version extra points for originality and the high contrast between the slow parts and the faster parts of his version. I still love GnR cover though because it is heavier and Axl has a voice to carry it wonderfully. Adding to your suggestion list of ‘VS’: ‘Easy’ by The Commodores and then Faith No More’s version.
I don't know man. Music has never been a sport, it's an art. What's the point of choosing winners? VS. seems like an outdated MTV gimmick. I'll stick with your traditional analytic song reviews.

As far as comparing originals to cover versions like this, I don't see any hard & fast formula.... if you're feeling something in particular, pause & talk about it. We'll know which ones are catching your ear more by the fact those will be longer than others! :)
Man Salvo, they are not absolutely great!! I’m going with Wings, The originators of this song. Bro, Wings had a lot of great very unique songs. Thx bro. Rock on!!¡
Paul McCartney is a genius.
Paul McCartney and Wings, not Paul McCartney and THE Wings. There is no "the." Paul really rocks it in concert, complete with fireworks and explosions.
Definitely gnr
In a Paul McCartney vs Axle Rose match up the Beatle ALWAYS WINS!
axl rose his voice isn't a patch on paul
Great reaction!I vote for Paul!It was fun too!
Glad you enjoyed
Paul McCartney and Wings’ live version, (with pyrotechnics), will always win out.
I'll bet you have heard McCartney before!
Gotta go with Wings. If I can make a suggestion, try Sympathy for the Devil. Original by The Rolling Stones and the cover by Guns n Roses. The GnR version plays over the end credits of Interview with the Vampire.
Wings all day long!!!!!!
GnR crashed this for me. You should do Welcome to the jungle its one of the songs made them mega famous. Great song
one of thee worst covers ever IMHO
Hey! To be clear I have I have “heard”
Of both I just haven’t listened to either.
I'm sure you don't really mean to be so harsh. We must remember that mainstream music during his entire life has been nothing but hip-hop and rap.
Honestly, if either version of this song comes on the radio, I'm turning the dial.
is nice, but version Guns live is best
Of course Paul wins
Gnr>
Good idea to do this comparative review. In this case I would give Paul McC version extra points for originality and the high contrast between the slow parts and the faster parts of his version. I still love GnR cover though because it is heavier and Axl has a voice to carry it wonderfully. Adding to your suggestion list of ‘VS’: ‘Easy’ by The Commodores and then Faith No More’s version.
Not even close dude lol. Wings 100%. Gnr Version is badddddd imo, never was a big hair metal guy though. Like glam rock but not glam metal.
Sorry but guns n roses version is more exciting and alive
I don't know man. Music has never been a sport, it's an art. What's the point of choosing winners? VS. seems like an outdated MTV gimmick. I'll stick with your traditional analytic song reviews.
Fair enough! I get that perspective. It’s just for fun, didn’t want to make it toxic serious ya kno? Thanks for being here !!
@@SalvoG Yes, fun should be had! You're young ... I'm old. Sometimes I forget that. I do love your reactions. You're a very sincere and smart young lad and clearly have a natural talent for broadcasting. Rock on SalvoG.
Love Guns And Roses, but with this song Wings has it all.
