Hey Tom! Great video. Have just gotten an NT1 5th Gen about a month ago and love and agree with everything you said. Run this with a Procaster and a VideoMic NTG and this was a Really good review. Going into my AI-1 it works a treat under XLR. The Procaster requires an SE Dynamite, but the AI-1 gain for the NT1 is way down at about 11 o’clock/40%ish (~24db?) under USB, Rode Connect sets it up nicely and I can’t notice any difference in raw sound in my DT770 headphones. Zero latency … yep… it’s a challenge Biru I connect the headset to the NTG that is also on Connect and latency to ULTRA Low and it seems to me to be close. But then… I typically only do Voice so less important…. THANKS and WELL DONE!
Comparing both listening through some cheap gaming headphones, there's a small difference in sound. The 5th seems to reject better room noise and "focus" more the sound, while the 4th seems to have noisier background and a bit "airy"

Hi Tom. Thank you for the review. I don't use the USB functionality a whole lot, but it came in handy when my interface failed and I still had to run meetings. That's a tough one and I've definitely been there but sadly don't have a silver bullet solution. I usually just try all manners of players and screwdrivers until something works. The tricky part is if it ended up being crossthreaded.

For me to make the jump, it would have needed to provide much more USB functionality like you said near the end of your video. Unless, of course, the RØDECaster Pro II got a firmware update that included 32-bit float recording...

Honestly, both mics are wonderful and have a VERY similar sound so you really can't go wrong either way. I think you can get the Lewitt with a shock mount for a bit less money than the Rode, so if you're on a budget, that might be the way to go. Depending on where you buy from, you could order both, try them out, and then return the one that you don't like. Sometimes the best way to choose is to use things in your specific environment with your exact setup.
Thank you so much Tom, you have answered all my questions for this new device. Are you able to take a look at the new Rode XLR video capture device that was just released. I really want to know if it can be used directly into a camera...
I just got my Streamer X the other day. Since it's a capture card it's really designed to take signals FROM a camera rather than TO them, but I don't see why you couldn't run a cable from the headphone output into your camera if needed.
As for the Condenser vs. Dynamic, i think that for a room, with no treatment, Dynamic is the best. I've tried a 20€ fifine condenser mic, and it sounds good, with no echo once setup, while a more expensive (and worse by any means, don't buy them, please) blue yeti sounds awful, even after the setup of an EQ, echo all over the place.
@@tombuck me neither. Tried to clip with NT1 5th, exported on 32 and it wasn’t clipping. Perhaps you could try too to check if I’m correct or not. Cheers!
So many great options! The Sennheiser wins for price and simplicity hands down. But the Rode has a lot of fun technical features if you're the kind of person who likes to poke around in apps and tweak settings to your heart's content.

@@tombuck Ive been playing with it, I like it a lot, but it’s pretty harsh on sibilance with my voice even when tilting the mic and using a de-esser. I’m going to treat my room & I ordered a wind shield. Hopefully it helps :) love the videos man
@@coleedwards1634 it still sounds good but will be a night and day difference with the foam paneling. I actually foam paneled my room the other day. I still didn’t think the microphone was the best fit for my voice and went with the Neat King Bee II instead and it sounds amazing!
Hey Tom! What about using two NT1’s or two condenser microphones in a small room for recording a podcast? How would you deal with the bleed? (I switched to two SM7B’s as they tend to catch less of the sound coming not directly frontal). What would you use?
Glad the video helped, but to add to it, the biggest thing is really just understanding the mics' pickup patterns. Multiple NT1's or other condensers are super common on podcasts. Usually positioning them around 45 degree angles from each other helps to prevent much bleed and then things sound terrific.
A very general rule of thumb is that condensers are better for untreated spaces (although I would encourage you to go with whatever you like the sound of). The SM7B is a classic if you have enough preamp power to run it. The Shure MV7 is a more budget friendly dynamic alternative.
Tom, great video as always! What are your thoughts on these mics versus the Podmic USB Plus? Also, what tabletop mic stand are you using in this video? I am looking for a good one in addition to my boom arms.
I have a bunch of Samson tabletop stands I found on Amazon. They're cheap and they work great. I've been really impressed with the PodMic USB so far. I do like the sound of the NT1 better, but the new PodMic is no slouch. And if you're planning to use it primarily for USB, then you can save your EQ settings to the mic itself so it always sounds that way. It also has the benefit of more physically controls and a headphone output.
Great video! I was wondering, can you record via USB and XLR at the same time? I do portable podcasting services and being able to this would be amazing as it would allow me to not just have a quality back up audio stream but some clients like having the audio recorded on their own devices right away instead of having to wait for me to transfer to them. Cheers!
I tried this and couldn’t get it to work unfortunately. I agree it would be an awesome bit of redundancy. If you need a backup though, you can run it through an XLR recorder like the Rodecaster and then also record via software on your computer (this is true for any XLR mic).
Interesting. I am actually thinking about trying this microphone out to replace my Shure SM7b. I love the way SM7b sounds but I notice some hiss due to the nature of dynamic mics and just how much gain is required to get SM7b up to a good level.
I love the sound of-NT1 5th Generation and would only be using it for personal use, chatting with friends etc. Would be using it in an untreated room aka my bedroom, some have said it picks up too much sound in an untreated environment so I was a bit hesitant. Like I said Im not using it for professional use I don't mind if it picks up an occasional motorcycle speeding by I just wouldn't want to hear echoes. Other mics Ive looked into were the rode podcast mic usb and the rode nt usb. Any input/suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
I LOVE the sound of the NT-USB+. If you're primarily planning to use it via USB, then that's a great way to go, especially since it offers more physical controls and a headphone output.
Thank you for all you said. I am a beginner and just bought this mic. Hope you can tell me how to get the software for the Rode nt1 fifth gen. Thanks a lot. Martin ( the Netherlands) thanks again.
Do you guys think it’s a good idea to trade in my rode nt1 for a sm7b my room is super noisy from fan, cars, my bird being mad and I should’ve done better research and I tried speaking close up to the mid and Turing up the gain but I still sound quite with the background being equally as loud 2what should I do?
I wouldn’t trade for it. I have SM7b and notice a sort of white noise in the background due to the high noise floor as a result of having to crank up gain to get usable levels out of SM7b (even with Cloudlifter and a good pre-amp).
This one really works best about 6-12 inches from the speaker. A shotgun or pencil condenser mic is better to be boomed out of frame (the Rode Videomic NTG or Audio Technica AT897 are a couple relatively affordable options).
I couldn't handle the wait, my excitement running HIGH, For that king of mics review, I could no longer complY. 😉 So I decided, "Forget it! I'm getting the Podmic USB NOW!” I couldn't resist its allure, I had to take a BOW. Hey, Tom, what's the scoop? Share the joy, don't delAY! Some overviews are floating around, lighting up the WAY. We're all thrilled and eager, ready for the grand revEAL, Let us in on the secret, the magic this mic can WIELD!
Honestly, I think either will perform well for that, so it really depends on whether or not you like the way one sounds more than the other. If you're planning to mainly use it via USB, then I'd recommend the NT-USB+ because it has more physical controls and a headphone output.
Rode now has XLR cables! They’re the perfect shades of each color. I would start there and use adapters as needed. Their headphone cables are good for 3.5mm.
I think this would be a bit more versatile, especially for singing. Although if you’re planning to use it mainly through USB you might prefer the additional physical controls on the PodMic.
I am using the NT1 (4th gen, exactly the one you have) in a untreated room with wave XLR interface, with the USB option, will I get the rode connect software filter with the 5th Gen even I am using a none-rode interface?
AS I understand it, once you adjust the settings with the software they'll stay that way anytime you use it as a USB mic with or without the Rode software, but it won't apply to XLR>
thanks for the reply, so I would be better off getting the Rode Streamer X to try to fix the the background noise from the original NT1? was trying to avoid to replace the interface @@tombuck
Has anyone used one of these with a super clacky keyboard behind it? Does it pick up all that sound? My MV7 just stopped working but I love the sound of this mic im just wondering what the sound elimination is like if theres a fan in the room or a clacky keyboard.
The SM7B sounds much more muddy in comparison, but from what I know, it's also intended to be EQ'd (so it's almost like the most flat/neutral sound profile possible to start with).
I thought the fourth generation mic sounded better. It is unlikely that Rode changed the internal specs for the mic. The big change is the USB input. 32 bit recording is not a function of the mic, it is a function of your audio recorder. I have heard experts question whether most mics can even take advantage 32 bit/192 htz recording. So it is possible that Rode improved the RT1 mic's ability to handle high bit rates. However, if this was true, then Rode would not say that the sound was unchanged. Also, to create a mic with the ability to handle 32 bit and 192 htz recording is likely going to be VERY expensive. So I doubt that the 5th gen RT1 handles 32 bit recording any better than the 4th generation.
From what I understand (and admittedly I'm no expert on this), there is new hardware inside the mic that allows for it to handle processing and 32 bit float.
@@tombuck I am no expert either, but I have listened to sound experts address 32 bit/192 htz recording and say that very few mics are capable of capturing that massive scope of sound. In a way it makes sense because this is cutting edge technology. The sheer amount of information that a mic must input for 32 bit / 192 htz recording is staggering. It will be interesting to see how the microphone industry responds. But a second issue arises in that even if the mic is capable of competently inputting all of this information, a substantial part of it is beyond the range of human hearing. So measuring equipment must be used to even check if the mic is indeed capturing all of the information and range. I have a Tascam X8 audio recorder that is capable of recording 32 bit/192 htz files. But I have not used 32 bit recording because of the massive file sizes and because I question whether any differences will be discernible in my recordings. I record original songs that I write on guitar, which do have a very wide vocal range. So I only care about the range of sound that the human ear can detect. The Tascam X8 does provide protection against clipping in very low ranges and very high ranges if I use 32 bit recording, but in real world use, I have found it very difficult to make audio recordings clip when using 24 bit/44.1 htz recording parameters. For "high-end" musical recordings (like Tidal) that streaming services offer, It is my understanding that they use 24 bit/96 htz recording settings. So that would appear to be the top-end range that the human ear can actually discern. However, I am learning about these audio engineering principles right now and so there is a lot that I do not fully understand. I do find my 24 bit/44.1 htz recordings to be excellent. Since many streaming services may not accept 96 htz recording rates, I have not used that setting yet, though the X8 will record at 96 htz easily. All this comes back to the original question, what exactly would Rode do to its NT1 Mic to facilitate 32 bit recording? Perhaps add better input capturing range? But that would be VERY expensive and I don't think they could sell the mic for $250.00 if that was the case. Also, doe the Gen 5 Rode NT1 record a 96 htz and 192 htz rates better than the Gen 4 NT1? That might be possible with a hardware change in the mic circuit board. I would like to hear Rode's sound engineers address these questions because 32 bit recording will be the future standard for the audio industry in my opinion.
Did you really say: "You don't need any additional adapter to mount this shock mount?" If you use an Elgato wave arm (which happens to have a 1/4 inch mount) you *do* need an adapter 3/8 on 1/4! 😛
Hmmm, One my office isn't treated because unlike you I use my office for all kinds of things. So as much as I love the Earthworks Ethos, my standard Mic is the Rode Procaster, to my voice is a cheaper version of the Shure SM-7B. The mic (NT1-5th) is puzzling to me. As you say it a very good XLR mic but then you basically paid for all the stuff (4 D/A converted etc) for nothing. And if you're using it as a USB Mic again, it's very good, but you can't monitor it now their logic is, well it's 32-bit so you don't need to, but that a BAD habit we don't want to start! My podcast is Audio only so I don't care how big the mic is. But if you're doing a video that mic with Pop filter is HUGE and is NOT something I think you should use. The Earthworks mic is great as you can be 6 to 8 inches away and still get great sound and is out of the way. Ok, that is my professional thought on the subject.

Love the 32-bit float, but still just makes me appreciate the Lewitt 440 even more. Just such bang for buck.
Tom do you have a video on how to EQ this microphone? Im using the rode castor duo
I’ve been sticking with the default NT1 preset for the most part and like it quite a bit.
@@tombuck Ive been playing with it, I like it a lot, but it’s pretty harsh on sibilance with my voice even when tilting the mic and using a de-esser.
I’m going to treat my room & I ordered a wind shield. Hopefully it helps :) love the videos man
What is your experience with it in an untreated room?@@Boofcan
@@coleedwards1634 it still sounds good but will be a night and day difference with the foam paneling. I actually foam paneled my room the other day.
I still didn’t think the microphone was the best fit for my voice and went with the Neat King Bee II instead and it sounds amazing!
always my bet mic teacher on UA-cam @Tom Buck, Great Work Bro
Had no idea this could record 32 bit float! I have a TLM 102 but want to downgrade and get 2 cheaper mics
It’s a great one! I really love the sound from it.
You should. There are better mics out there for much cheaper.
A real selling point on these Rode mics are the very low self noise of 4 dB.
Yeah! They are ridiculously quiet.
Hey Tom!
What about using two NT1’s or two condenser microphones in a small room for recording a podcast? How would you deal with the bleed? (I switched to two SM7B’s as they tend to catch less of the sound coming not directly frontal).
What would you use?
Haha, got my answer around 15/16th minute ;)
Glad the video helped, but to add to it, the biggest thing is really just understanding the mics' pickup patterns. Multiple NT1's or other condensers are super common on podcasts. Usually positioning them around 45 degree angles from each other helps to prevent much bleed and then things sound terrific.
The4th gen is warmer in sound. Offering a bit more low end.
The beta for the RCP 2 supports 32 bit integer
NT1 5th generation Only the USB connection has the 32-bit float? what about the XLR connection? thanks
What micro would you recommend for untreated space environment?
Just for my house, I want to record audiobooks.
@@tombuck what a shame. Thanks for trying! And yeah that's what I do, except with the sound devices mix pre :)
Good for ASMR and talking. (At the same time) 😊
No hisses or anything, Just a pure voice audio. (With 32-bit float) 😁
Haha, that part of the video felt so strange, but for a more skilled person than me it could work really well!
@@tombuck yeah, i think so. =)
do you use the5th gen nt1 in a treated room? was thinking about purchasing it but id just be using it in my bedroom.@@ItsRyukin
Interesting. I am actually thinking about trying this microphone out to replace my Shure SM7b. I love the way SM7b sounds but I notice some hiss due to the nature of dynamic mics and just how much gain is required to get SM7b up to a good level.
Hello, which of the two is better to reject plusive, Rode SM6 , Rode SMR Shockmount ?
I love the sound of-NT1 5th Generation and would only be using it for personal use, chatting with friends etc. Would be using it in an untreated room aka my bedroom, some have said it picks up too much sound in an untreated environment so I was a bit hesitant. Like I said Im not using it for professional use I don't mind if it picks up an occasional motorcycle speeding by I just wouldn't want to hear echoes. Other mics Ive looked into were the rode podcast mic usb and the rode nt usb. Any input/suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
The fact that the audio is not very different from the NT USB+ convinced me that I should get it over the NT1 and get a week of groceries instead! :)
Thanks for the video. Could you do a comparison between the NT1 5th Gen vs the NT USB Plus?
Do you guys think it’s a good idea to trade in my rode nt1 for a sm7b my room is super noisy from fan, cars, my bird being mad and I should’ve done better research and I tried speaking close up to the mid and Turing up the gain but I still sound quite with the background being equally as loud 2what should I do?
I wouldn’t trade for it. I have SM7b and notice a sort of white noise in the background due to the high noise floor as a result of having to crank up gain to get usable levels out of SM7b (even with Cloudlifter and a good pre-amp).
can i boomed it out frame and still give good voice ???
This one really works best about 6-12 inches from the speaker. A shotgun or pencil condenser mic is better to be boomed out of frame (the Rode Videomic NTG or Audio Technica AT897 are a couple relatively affordable options).
Has anyone found these colored windscreens for the Samson Q9U?
I haven't found specific ones, but the PodMic ones can be shimmied to fit.
Is this 🎤 good for ASMR? And can it be hooked up to a phone to recorder it? Or is it only for computers 🖥 🤔
Did you ever purchase it?good for asmr content?
I couldn't handle the wait, my excitement running HIGH,
For that king of mics review, I could no longer complY. 😉
So I decided, "Forget it! I'm getting the Podmic USB NOW!”
I couldn't resist its allure, I had to take a BOW.
Hey, Tom, what's the scoop? Share the joy, don't delAY!
Some overviews are floating around, lighting up the WAY.
We're all thrilled and eager, ready for the grand revEAL,
Let us in on the secret, the magic this mic can WIELD!
You’re the best. I can’t think of anything clever to say, I just love this 😁
Rode NT1 5th USB Version VS Rode NT USB+ which do you think is better for rap vocals, youtube and twitch?
Honestly, I think either will perform well for that, so it really depends on whether or not you like the way one sounds more than the other.
If you're planning to mainly use it via USB, then I'd recommend the NT-USB+ because it has more physical controls and a headphone output.
Hi Tom, do you know where we can get cables that match the colors of the RCPII? Mic cable, and 1/4 to 3.5mm cables
Rode now has XLR cables! They’re the perfect shades of each color. I would start there and use adapters as needed. Their headphone cables are good for 3.5mm.
Hi Tom, which microphone stand are you using in this video for the NT1?
if i wanted to shoot both podcasts, voiceovers, and singers would you recommend this or the podmic usb?
I think this would be a bit more versatile, especially for singing. Although if you’re planning to use it mainly through USB you might prefer the additional physical controls on the PodMic.
Thank you
Hope it was helpful!
The 145db spl is what makes it worth the upgrade
How do u get that crisp and crunchy sound from ur mics? Mine sounds very normal.
I am using the NT1 (4th gen, exactly the one you have) in a untreated room with wave XLR interface, with the USB option, will I get the rode connect software filter with the 5th Gen even I am using a none-rode interface?
AS I understand it, once you adjust the settings with the software they'll stay that way anytime you use it as a USB mic with or without the Rode software, but it won't apply to XLR>
thanks for the reply, so I would be better off getting the Rode Streamer X to try to fix the the background noise from the original NT1? was trying to avoid to replace the interface @@tombuck
what has been your experience with it in a untreated room?
How did you get a floor stand to hold this mic? It’s so heavy
In this video I only had it on tabletop stands, but they held it just fine 👍
@@tombuck yeah mine is on one now but not enough room for table in room I’m using
The new one has a brighter sound
How does it perform against Shure mv7?
It has a brighter sound and USB C is a plus, but the MV7 has more on-mic functionality, including a headphone output.
@@tombuck Thank you. I think i am gonna keep my Sm7.
Has anyone used one of these with a super clacky keyboard behind it? Does it pick up all that sound? My MV7 just stopped working but I love the sound of this mic im just wondering what the sound elimination is like if theres a fan in the room or a clacky keyboard.
It’ll likely pick up a little more room sound than the MV7, but it’s not too bad. And the quality is terrific.
16:49 imo rode's mic sounds a lot better than shure sm7b. It is a lot more clear. Sure's mic sounds like a cheap mic in a sock
The SM7B sounds much more muddy in comparison, but from what I know, it's also intended to be EQ'd (so it's almost like the most flat/neutral sound profile possible to start with).
Hey Tom! would you say the Audio-Technica BP40 still holds up? Thinking about upgrading for voice overs
I've never used the BP40 myself, so I can't say. I do know that every AT product I've ever used has been incredibly durable .
@@tombuck thanks for the reply and feedback!
4th Gen for me too. Less sibilance
Hi Tom, Is it possible to connect the NT1 5th with usb-c to Android mobile phones?
In theory, yes- but I don’t have one to test it for sure.
@@tombuck thanks Tom
I hear the difference but I like the old
Hi
Rode NT1 5th Generation or shure mv7 ?!
Best For youtube video ❤🙏🫠🥺
It really comes down to whether you prefer a condenser sound or a dynamic sound. I’d lean towards the NT1 personally 👍
@@tombuck Thanks Tom♥️, my room is not acoustic. Is nt 1 still a good option?
Tha BEST 👏
HAha, Elgato is definitely the odd one out by choosing to make 1/4 20 they're standard mic mount 🤷🏻♂️
I think your combo of Earthworks and Procaster is quite a winning one. Really covers just about all the bases and scenarios.
the 440 pure sounds like the rode if it was improved
مايكرفون nt1 يصلح للغناء
It is not MFI compliant, it does not work with smartphones via USB. Bummer. I remain with my 4th gen.
Really? I saw another review where a guy had it connected to an iPhone and it worked (allegedly with slightly less gain)
