Great tune... love these guys. The rock legends of the 80s and 90s were just predicting everything we see today. Or maybe they were just pointing out what has always existed and what will continue to exist.
"Or maybe they were just pointing out what has always existed and what will continue to exist." This right here. Shits been going on for a veeeeerry long time. The good artists alert you to it. Those who know, give an appreciative nod.....the rest just nod to the beat.
Granted, there have been “leaders” throughout history who have established cults of personality. Certainly, however, some have been more pronounced than others. They have been legitimately dangerous. Today, we have one of these pronounced examples in trump. That the lyrics of this song describe what he’s managed to do to this country is blatantly obvious. Unless, you’re one of the 10s of millions of adherents to his cult. Then, you don’t see shit. It’s baffling and absolutely terrifying.

The entire band is extremely talented! The singer! The drummer! The bassist! Mr. Vernon Reid DESTROYING that guitar!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The little girl throughout the video IS KEY! You see her watching TV, as the band plays the song, she becomes mesmerized, completely engrossed. Just as the song comes to a close, she leans forward to shut off the TV. This song is an indictment of the industrial complex that is the mainstream media.....ALL platforms of media. It is the 'Cult of Personality' that you can not take at face value. This song is around 30 years old... Relevant then...even more so now. ✌️✌️ Edit: The lyrics...'....when a leader speaks that leader dies...' I believe that it refers to those politicians, religious or spiritual leaders who do not or will not conform to the narrative that the true controllers want put into the public eye.
The band reunited in 2008 and have been together since, and have released 3 albums since (Collideoscope, The Chair in the Doorway, and Shade). Between albums and touring the band does do side projects but have remained together as a band. Last year they streamed a live show on UA-cam for covid relief early in the lock down.
@@scabaa2017 Glamour Boys was such a disappointing follow-up to this. It’s like a cheesy ‘80’s pop song. They released several great albums though and are quite under-rated.

The singer, Corey Glover was a movie star before this band. He co-starred with Charlie Sheen in 'Platoon". He's the soldier in the movie that stabbed himself in the leg near the end of the movie
One of my all time favorite fast hard rock song. Tremendous musical artists and a GREAT song, tremendous lyrics backed up with spectacular musicians. And the use of famous audio clips of people talking, like Malcolm X being the first thing you hear and later JFK and FDR ending the song was, in my opinion, beyond unique and was instead genius. Part of the genius of using pairs of famous people from the past was to combine people who were very opposite. Like using Joseph Stalin and Gandhi together. Polar opposites.
Corey is actually wearing a Body Glove (a popular 80's brand of active clothing known for their day-glow colors) "tank spring suit", a form of surfing wetsuit for mild-warm days. This song is more relevant today more than ever. Lex is right, Corey was speaking in the third person. Living Colour's music touches on subject matter that is relevant to the every day person dealing with certain life issues in a way that we all can connect with in a tactile manner.
These guys were the opening act for The Rolling Stones on their Steel Wheels tour, I liked their sound so much, I immediately went out and bought their " album". Yes, their album, before cd's.....glad you guys reacted to them. Enjoy your channel, keep it up!

I met these cats in 1990 in college at Frostburg State U. as they were playing a show and my fraternity, KZX, was providing security. They hung out with us for an hour before the show and were just so down to earth and cool, I will never forget them and tell that story now and then. He was riding on the exercise bike at the athletic center and asking us about ourselves and we were like you’re a rock star who cares about us. They were huge on the radio and never knew why they played such a small venue.
I was 12 years old when I first heard this song - on WWE, 'cus it was CM Punk's theme song. And this was before I became a metalhead, but I started watching WWE pretty much from the moment I was born lol. And so I ended up not missing a single episode of WWE in hopes that CM Punk would appear, so I could hear Cult of Personality. (:

When you didn't know Black guys could rock out so effing HARD. Death is a great early Punk Rock band from here in Detroit that a lot of people don't give credit to. Music has no hue
Oh yeah, Bad Brains (from DC) were another example of that, in fact I'd like to see Brad and Lex react to them - 'I against I' would be a good song to start with.
Yeah fantastic lead guitar, the solo sounds like someone coloring and suddenly starts scribbling crazy. Living Colour, the only black hair band I ever heard of.
When Lex says 'sloppy' I think your misinterpreting what the guitarist is doing. These guys are studio musicians. Primus is also considered 'sloppy' by some ears. Both bands are A+ musicians. Mariah Carey is a super talented vocalist. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Music is an individual experience. No one can say what sounds good to you shouldn't sound good to you. Keep on rockin' in the free world!
As a guitarist myself for 35 years , it is sloppy but it's still good to my ears. His commitment to the solo is what makes me enjoy it. If I was a producer at the time? Yeah I may have made him play it slower clean until he could play it fast clean. But the abandoned solo was still good.

Seriously, all I said was, which wrestler you liked? but if you want to just start hating, instead of reading a bit about cm punk's history then chill, I'm not going to read it and quote it for you, I was trying to change the subject but you bring it back up Punk again.
The first reaction to this song I've seen where they're not shocked that Living Colour are black rockers. It's refreshing, actually.
"Type" is my favorite song by Living Colour. It wasn't one of their more popular songs but the 'beat' switched-up a few times and showed how diverse they could be.
yes!!! Finally someone else mentioned it.
The term cult of personality refers to creating an image of a leader that is not questioned or criticized.
GREAT SONG!!!! Never gets old!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘💜
🤣 Richard Simmons! He's actually wearing a Body Glove. That was the most dope surfing suit back in the 80's. I loved this when it originally came out in the late 80's and actually saw them them live here in Cape Coral, FL just a couple years ago and while Corey Glover may not still have that head of hair he had back then but the man's voice is still fire!
Living Colour was a great band...This was their best song...but "Love rears it's ugly head" needs a listen as well!!!
Yes... Love rears it's Ugly Head... I 2nd the motion...
Also Open Letter to A Landlord, Glamour Boys, and my favorite deep cut, Funny Vibes
@ Paul Jansen IS still a great Band !! And no those where the singles, they have much better songs
'Type' from the next album
That lead vocal, and the guitar riff, unbelievable!
Great tune... love these guys. The rock legends of the 80s and 90s were just predicting everything we see today. Or maybe they were just pointing out what has always existed and what will continue to exist.
"Or maybe they were just pointing out what has always existed and what will continue to exist."
This right here.
@@ImaDieHrderLkeMyKidBruceWillis I used to consider myself liberal until leftism went off the deep end. So, I guess I'm a conservative now, but I know a lot of brainwashed people on both sides.
Politics is a cult in and of itself. If you give yourself over to either side, you're in a cult.
@@2Quietus Nailed it. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
@@ImaDieHrderLkeMyKidBruceWillis Meanwhile, Joe Blow runs this country into the ground. All I know is we weren't paying 5$/gallon for gas or $30 for a steak under the orange man. I'll take the mean tweets instead.
Love this album. Back in 1988 these guys were WWAAAYY ahead of their time.
Awesome song! C.M. Punk's (wrestling) music.
I was gonna say.. Who's going to mention the most incredible return in recent wrestling history???
This song drops a massive pipebomb!
I remember hearing this for the first time as a kid in the late 80's. Loved it then and still love it now. These guys are very talented musicians.
I've always loved this jam. Living Colour was one of those bands that pioneered 90's alternative rock in the 80's, like Faith No More they were ahead of their time musically. Just ignore the neon body glove, their fashion was stuck in the 80's.
A band that was awesome in their day, but also ahead of their time. Corey's voice is off the charts awesome!
Great song. Love that guitar. He’s a top player.
The entire band is extremely talented!
The singer!
The drummer!
The bassist!
Mr. Vernon Reid DESTROYING that guitar!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The little girl throughout the video IS KEY!
✌️✌️
Edit:
The lyrics...'....when a leader speaks that leader dies...' I believe that it refers to those politicians, religious or spiritual leaders who do not or will not conform to the narrative that the true controllers want put into the public eye.
This band was amazing, and looks like they are about to have a reunion ... thrilled! love@Brad & Lex!
yeah loved this album
The band reunited in 2008 and have been together since, and have released 3 albums since (Collideoscope, The Chair in the Doorway, and Shade). Between albums and touring the band does do side projects but have remained together as a band. Last year they streamed a live show on UA-cam for covid relief early in the lock down.
@@frankdtank7444 Good to know !
Frank D Tank , they actually reunited in 2000 and CollideOscope came out in 2003.
Definite late '80's vibe to this one. Good message.
They were amazing and I only wish they recorded MORE albums. They had quite a few hits!
What other 'hits' did they have? This is the only one I ever heard on the radio.
Type and Glamour Boys are two more that were on the radio and MTV...back when they actually played music videos.
@@scabaa2017 Glamour Boys was such a disappointing follow-up to this. It’s like a cheesy ‘80’s pop song.
They released several great albums though and are quite under-rated.
@@kdog909 That was the point. They were pointing out how that poppy crowd was full of plastic people that didn't realize they were hollow.
This is the song I have been waiting for you to review since I first came across your page. Glad you got the meaning, the solo will make more sense the more you listen to it. Always love watching you guys discover new things!
The singer, Corey Glover was a movie star before this band. He co-starred with Charlie Sheen in
'Platoon". He's the soldier in the movie that stabbed himself in the leg near the end of the movie
Corey was actually in the band before he did Platoon. He left for 6 weeks to shoot in the Philippines.
This guitarist Vernon Reid is is one of the most underrated of all time
agreed
Living Colour are great because every single member is so ridiculously good at what they do
Corey is actually wearing a Body Glove (a popular 80's brand of active clothing known for their day-glow colors) "tank spring suit", a form of surfing wetsuit for mild-warm days.
This song is more relevant today more than ever. Lex is right, Corey was speaking in the third person.
Living Colour's music touches on subject matter that is relevant to the every day person dealing with certain life issues in a way that we all can connect with in a tactile manner.
Lol Body Glove was all over the place back then and then all of a sudden it just disappeared
These guys were the opening act for The Rolling Stones on their Steel Wheels tour, I liked their sound so much, I immediately went out and bought their " album". Yes, their album, before cd's.....glad you guys reacted to them. Enjoy your channel, keep it up!
I saw that concert in Indianapolis...Corey Glover had fallen off the stage the night before and still had a goose egg on his forehead. I actually went to see Living Clour...I mean I like the stones and all. Have to admit though...a whole new respect for the Rolling Stones...what a fucking show they put on...OMG.
Always been a kick azz song, if you listen close you will hear how his voice and SRV's voice sounds almost identical in a lot or areas.....singer is Danny Glover's ( the actor ) nephew.
Never knew that, and that was one of my favorite songs.

@@DJBVWA you are correct, I should have checked the facts first, I have believed that all these years lol
When you were thinking of the workout informercial guy I was like Gene Simmons! 🤣 this is what it is to get old I guess
If you're going to be a one-hit wonder, have a message!! They had other songs, but this the only one most know. But what an important song for history and the future. All timer.❤🔥
They had other great songs, this is the only one the radio played.
Type was just as big.
@@Yourfavgirls-w5d Hense one hit wonder.
Not a one hit wonder; they had 4 Top 20 songs from the first two albums alone.
saw them live in 92 in their prime they were unreal,do memories can't wait, middle man, funny vibe, never be satisfied,type...i could go on all night so many bangers to pick from
when ever I hear this the uncontrollable urge of screaming CM PUNK! CM PUNK! takes over me like the holy ghost. Great react.
I had a friend in high school who loved Stone Cold Steve Austin. Anytime we would start his theme song (Glass Shatters by Disturbed) he would stand up, smack his hands together and flip the double birds. 🤣
Oh hellz yes! I love y’all so damn much!
That moment when we all know the guitar solo is in fact coming, and we can’t wait to see Lex’s reaction! 😍😍😍
Their song Glamor Boys is a totally different vibe but just as good lyrics. You have to do that one next
Great song, on the same level as Solace of You. Totally different “vibe”, still great!
Well, he came back! With the same song!
Brad & Lex. Love the both of you. Doesn’t matter what music your playing . I’m a child of the 70’s. But I love the chemistry you two youngsters have. It’s so fun watching you discover stuff I grew up on. May you live as long as you want. And may you never want as long as you live. God Bless.
BRAD.....All rhythm parts are riffs, if a song has 3 rhythm change ups then it has 3 different riffs ....aka guitar riffs. Bass guitar lines can also be called a bass riff. LEX is spot on
Not sure where you got that idea from.
Riff
“a short repeated phrase in popular music and jazz, typically used as an introduction or refrain in a song”
Nothing to do with rhythm.
Smoke On The Water has one riff.
@@RoverT65536 Because I have been a guitar player for over 3o years and that's what we all call them then and now...Mr. Know nothing from outside a definition in a books world! hahaha

@@SIXX2772 , I generally regret when I end up making comments and am often wiser, sticking them in my “not sent” folder. I could have phrased my first comment more politely. I’m old, heart attack a few years ago, and it is interesting how easy it is for comments to bring up emotions getting my heart pounding. I'm not allowed to get angry anymore.
It sounds like I may have offended you since you are calling me names and such. I apologize, I could have been nicer.
I've been a drummer for a while so maybe you can take that as my excuse. I used the definition because it was more precise than what I would have come up with. Nothing to do with changes in rhythm. It seems you have been taught, and perhaps been in an environment, or of an age, where is it used differently.
Oh, good, now my heart has calmed down, thanks for today's exercise. Cheers.
@@SIXX2772 , and in more humility I will say, I was a old rock drummer, so say no more. I did have a limited definition of the word riff and you were more right than my original thought.
Vernon Reid was a beast on guitar. This song never gets old
The early 90s was an acceptable time for people to wear short sleeve short surfing gear out in public.
As a surfer my whole life it has absolutely never been OK to wear a wet suit anywhere but in the water. I remember when this came out great band, great song, unacceptable wet suit.
It was the 80s, but whatever
That solo gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it. I still have the cassette for this album
“Metallica started sloppy and an then got way good.” Don’t think I’ve ever heard that before. You’ll change your mind eventually. Keep Rockin y’all. 🤙🔥🤘
I think she meant as they started so raw in Kill’em all and then when ride of lighting came out they got so much more refined.
This is a great song.
“Youknowwhatimean” 😄
The good Old days, when the colour of your skin didn't define the style of music you created.
I remember seeing this video when I was a kid ( think I was like 6 or 7). I was blown away by the imagery and Corey Glover's voice was so good to me. I loved the combination of the more metal driven guitar and the groove of the vocals.
Black Death from Cleveland
Tosin: "Am I a joke to you?"
Living Colour was the first band to win the Best Hard Rock/Metal performance award at the Grammys
Sloppy? What is sloppy about this song? This song rocks from start to finish
Yeah.. their reactions are disappointing for me ... usually everybody like it very much!
@@commenceenavoirmarre I agree I feel like they don’t understand music outside of rap at all.
You guys did this one on my birthday. One of the most amazing pieces of rock 'n' roll ever.

Unique. This song is a freakin banger.
I wonder if Vernon ever plays that lead solo the same way twice.
