  • Internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Alice Coote performs Xerxes's plane tree aria, or 'Under thy shade', during rehearsals of Handel's Xerxes with English National Opera's orchestra.
    About Xerxes:
ENO's Olivier Award-winning staging of Handel's Xerxes returned to the London Coliseum in the autumn of 2014.
Centring on the rivalry between Xerxes and his brother Arsamenes, Handel's comic masterpiece mixes humour, sexuality and seething emotions. With dazzling music and soaring singing, Xerxes is an enthralling night of fun, joy and biting social satire.
With spectacular designs evoking Vauxhall's pleasure gardens in the eighteenth century, Nicholas Hytner's much-loved production has earned English National Opera the reputation as an international powerhouse of stylish and adventurous Handel productions.
Hear internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Alice Coote sing the title role for the first time at ENO, alongside star counter-tenor Andrew Watts who returns as Arsamenes and Sarah Tynan as Romilda.
    About English National Opera:

We saw this wonderful production last night. Alice Coote was superb, as were the other cast members.

This is good, but I still prefer Ann Murray's performance.
