This film footage is priceless!
Big time!
HOW INCREDIBLE!!! What great footage ......and the only footage of Sutherland in STUARDA that I've ever seen!!! THANK YOU for posting!!!
Even now, in 2021, we can still feel the emotion! Bravoooo
Wow, Sutherland is the last person I'd ever expect to have slapped someone! Fierce! Gorgeous! Absolutely love this.
I know is was SHOCKED and SHOOKETH!! Lol 😝
I’ve never seen any other staging where Elizabeth I was slapped and I loved it haha.
I think, in Norma Major’s book on Joan, she mentioned that Joan slapped a man backstage for being inappropriate towards her. I may not be remembering it right, but I think it’s true.
This performance is fantastic. Great singing.
11:18 hahahaa loved the slapping
Hahaha that bitch slap Sutherland gives Tourangeau is perfect! Sutherland wasn't an actress but when she was on she could be totally robust and authoritative and totally convince you. Maybe it wasn't character immersion but it certainly wasn't a case of someone phoning it in. This was also one of her better late career parts and she's in terrific shape here.
Sutherland owns this role. Her vocal powers are their highest here. Her acting incredible
Does the entirety of this exist or just the nugget?!
WWWOOOWW!!!
I was there and Huguette Tourangeau was inpressive!!!!!!!
Wonderful dramatic singing by the leading artists. The other singers are very good also.
che meraviglia grazie molte, peccato che il video non permetta di vedere la scenografia sembra bella
Tourangeau, one of the strangest voices on the world’s opera stages. Bonynge gave her a career.
Charles Rhodes ■ AND for that ... the World owes Bonynge Great Respect !
@@cliffgaither no...
vicmanu ■ Thank you very much ! I'm a great fan of Tourangeau's unique voice. Much-appreciated ! ( I didn't like the slap ! 😒 )
The tenor is a show-off ! 😊 His voice is exquisitely beautiful.
Joan slapped her! OMG.
Additionally, the pithy and brief comments with no subtance denigrating this seem to comment on every JS video there is on yt to down her. I only know this because I've been on a Sutherland binge for the past month (like to watch an artist for a month to immerse myself) and the same pricks pop up in every comment section to down her. They're opera trolls and if you thought this part of the world wouldn't have trolls, sadly mistaken.
Tourangeau seems to have difficults on high notes. Sutherland enormous as usually.
Omg. Did she really slap Huguette?? It sounded like there was contact! 😬🤣
11:49 "Va preparati furente"
Is this Covent Garden 1977 or San Francisco 1971? (when she sang this role for the first time)
brava sutherland!!
A work by Huguette Tourangeau done with the utmost precision, in the times and lengths of the notes. Everything in own place: the low notes are low and the high notes are high. The scene has been spoiled by Joan Sutherland's exaggerated entrance with an inopportune slap, out of context and out of the attitude of a queen. That exaggeration was projected in the sound. Theatrical art and singing must be in an organic harmony in the opera.
Where from please ?
The slap is bad direction, besides which anyone striking Elizabeth I would have been run through or something. Maria should have just delivered the speech with quietly thundering dignity, letting the speech speak for itself. Sutherland = divine
non accordo ..... Era Brilliante
Good for Joanie, but oh dear - slapped or not, Elisabetta needs to end "Guardie, olà!" with a leap of a fourth, not a minor third.
Just a dress rehearsal... often singers dodge tricky spots saving their voice for the real thing.
@@LaDivinaLover You know as well as I do that there is a difference between "marking" and "missing," but it is more gallant of you to defend Tourangeau than it was of me to criticize her.
@@pitvla8 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣😂🤣
What a parody after Gencer and Verrett…..
I loved the mezzo, her voice is strong and her chest voice cavernous! I couldn't get anything Sutherland was saying. Unfortunately she was ineffective in the most dramatic moments. Leyla Gencer was the greatest in this role.
Pour conductor !
Orribile
Sutherland... ZZZzzzz...
Please show us how to do better. I’m sure you’re very impressive.

Check any other soprano...
It was fantastic, but certainly too much for you to understand, little troll

Thanks
There isn't a soprano in the past 60 years anywhere near her equal.
