The reason why some cosplayers--if not most--chooses to stay skinny or just have a good overall physique is because this gives them more avenue to cosplay different characters. These cosplayers don't just do it for fun, they also put love into it, passion and effort into it. To the point that it's not just about wearing the same clothes or having the same hair as the character they're cosplaying, they also make sure that their physique matches the character as much as possible.

The characters are having conventional attractive figures. Being overweight dressing like them are not "cosplaying". At least in asian standard here. Cosplaying is resembling fictional character. We asian made anime characters here usually are all white and skinny because it's the beauty standard here. Many asian went to some conventions in the west actually mindblowned by how free the "standard" in the west is. Most are true just gathering around for fun with budge clothes. Which is a good thing for many. You wouldn't even walk out your home like this in Asia as we always try to be respectful to others rather than enjoying freely ourselves. We know people on the street wouldn't enjoy us dressing like that with such a figure.
TLDR: Just enjoy yourself if you are in the west , who gives a shit. If you are in the east, respect our cultures. You can just quit watching anime or "cosplaying" if you are against something which has always been a constant for decades here.

"Prettiest" yes but not "whitest and skinniest", there's a ton of asians and plenty of popular curvy cosplayers too (curvy not used as a euphemism though). Cosplay shouldn't have to be about being attractive either - just look at male cosplayers. Just don't expect to get a huge following, most people aren't actually *that* interested in costumes.

Here's the thing. I think cosplay in person (at anime conventions for example) is much more about recreating the character well, maybe doing some iconic poses or whatever, and taking pictures with people who are fans of the character. I'll go up to someone who isn't particularly attractive and ask for a picture if their cosplay is done well and I like the character, sure.

I think its because in the animes the characters were mainly skinnier and more attractive so if the cosplayer is skinnier and more attractive and their body type is similar to that of the character they are cosplaying then obviously they have a much higher chance at looking like said character which is the whole point of cosplay. If you are fat and want to be a good cosplayer then your best shot is to choose a character that is also fat like you. I understand that’s not what you probably want to hear but it’s just how it works.

Although I have an ick towards people that cosplay characters that they don't know about (even on the surface level) and care about, I personally believe that a lot of these conventionally attractive people put a lot of effort for their cosplays so it's a no brainer if the masses give a lot attention to them, because it shows their hard work.
