  • During an active shooter event, rapid decision-making and effective communication are crucial - and that takes leadership. Leadership can happen at any level. Whether it’s a contact team, rescue task force, or even perimeter, the first arriving officer often needs to step up as the team leader. Waiting for a higher-ranked officer can be too slow and costs lives. By building from the ground up, those with the most situational awareness remain actively involved throughout the incident. It’s not about rank. It’s about getting the job done - no matter who is put in a leadership position. You can prepare for leadership, just as you prepare for entry - put yourself in the role and plan how you would handle it.
