Wrong. In chain of memories, Sora doesn't get his memories back, he loses them more and more as you progress through the game. He gets them back at the end of CoM and the beginning of Kh2

What about 358/2 Days? You never play Xion in the story mode! Even when Roxas' dumb butt was in a coma.
What about RE:Coded? The Sora in the game is a fake Sora made of data and code... like everyone else. Only King Mickey, Pete, and those brought with them are real.
"Spin offs?" OK this must be said and it must be said NOW! NONE of the Kingdom Hearts games are "spin offs" they ARE ALL PLOT RELEVANT! IF YOU DON'T PLAY THEM ALL YOU WON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!
Dr. Flash "Main trilogy" is just the idealistic view people have. "Main titles" don't exist in this franchise. I prefer to consider the three games with number titles as main console games meant to add more over all. However the other games ARE in fact apart of that story to the point if you where to go into Kingdom Hearts 3 without playing them you would have no idea what's going on. With 2 prequel games, 2 games that take place after the first Kingdom Hearts, and 2 that take place after Kingdom Hearts 2, each one introduces villains, heroes and side characters EXTREMELY relevant to the overarching plot and some are even considered better games story-wise compared to the number titles. Basicly what I'm saying is the number titles are the adventure, while the word titles are the heart of the game franchise. They add to the lore, the emotion, and add characters you would not even know existed unless you played them. ALL of them are important, and calling them spin-offs which means something irrelevant to the plot, but there to fill in space, which is something THEY ARE NOT! While I agree the titles are confusing, the thing about Square is that they never really get that gamers think simplemindedly. Like you for example. All it takes is a quick google search for that oh so convoluted title problem and your good to go. Yeah, if you honestly don't do a little research when tackling a new game franchise then how do you expect to get anywhere? I've had my fair share of experiences with prequels. Enough to know, you can never tell by title what game comes first. But there are some people who take these things at face value. Exhibit A: You. So yeah do I condone their way of titling their games? No, but I will never call ANY KH game a spin-off. Even the mini online game that's only available in japanese is plot relevant. Nomura said so himself. Why do you think the 1.5 and 2.5 remixes exist. They exist so gamers new to the franchise can catch up, and play through the games on a single platform. (With the exception of Dream Drop Distance of course. But who DOESN'T own a 3ds these days?) The point is, despite the bad naming all the games are relevant, and part of the main franchise. The games that have number titles are only the main console games, but in every other way these word title games are equal...and sometimes story wise are even more relevant. Sorry for the rant but you asked for it thinking you can argue this with me. Someone who came into the franchise knowing nothing and came out a master fan. Mwahahaha!

Actually you can understand everything without playing the side games, you just have to read up a bit, I can explain how most if not all characters are connected, why who has what, why who looks like who, so on so forth.

And reading up on it doesn't give the same emotional connection as it would if you played it. little bits of information hinting at the end I think the only way you could possibly understand all of it is if you looked up all the cutscenes. But it's still not as fun as playing all the way through a game.
the kingdom hearts story line is NOT confusing. it is only hard to QUICKLY explain the whole story to someone. otherwise i have never had a problem with the story.

For clarification, at one point in 358/2 days, Axel leaves for a while for *CASTLE OBLIVION*
COM happens in Castle Oblivion, and just so happens Axel plays an important role there.
From there, knowing both games happen before KH 2, we can garner that 358/2 days starts from when Sora becomes a heartless before getting exorcised by Kairi through the power of hugs, and COM starts at the part in 358/2 days where Axel leaves, and COM ends pretty much when Axel gets back to the World that Never Was.
... Where does that leave 358/2 days though? I mean, that basically means it is both before AND after COM

Ventus at the ending, loses his heart, this going to Sora, making sora a Keyblade user, and Ventus body "sleeping"
So, that would make Ventus at the ending, Giving birth by sleeping to a Saga.
"RE:" being a reply is a common misconception. It actually means "Regarding."
So if you posted "I think Metroid is the best Nintendo series" and I wanted to respond to that, I would write

It's similar to replying, but has a bit more functionality. Also, replies are usually built into communication software nowadays.

***** No, but it's still not a good title. Good titles usually roll off the tongue rather than just being a bunch of in this case related words being strung together. Uncharted, Run Lola Run, Game of Thrones, the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus are all examples of good titles of varying length that not only convey what the title is about but sound good doing so. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue doesn't flow quite as well.
I really need to play Kingdom Hearts again. Despite its flaws and convoluted-ness, it remains to be one of my favorite Disney video games.

I had flaws in the plot, but all of the titles tie in really nicely and fill in those plot holes. Its pretty solid and I wish it was a bit more popular.

The 358/2 days is wrong isn't it? You don't play as Xion besides mission mode. But that could be a separate meaning. Don't you only play for half of the 358 days as they do a lot of time skips, that could be the literal meaning
It's correct. The thing is that even though you don't play all 358 days Roxas still experiences them. Except for that time he was in a coma state. Then Xion experienced those days hence the 2 in 357/2 days
I think the /2 is for the last mission of the Roku fight, counting as half a day. At least, this is what I was told.
The "over two" part comes from the fact that Roxas left the organization for two days before he was caught and had his memory erased. It even tells you in the game that after 358 you go over two days. "Three five eight, over two, days."
Something tells me you only own the HD remix version.
just to clarify: He got the 358 days part, but the 2 days isn't because you use two characters. It's because both characters are connected to Sora
As other people have mentioned, Chi is pronounced "Key" (explained in BBS). Also, another key point for "Birth by Sleep" is that Ventus's heart is sleeping inside of Sora's.

Type Masters Gnoggin is clearly not part of the Game Theorist channel or group of channels. There is clearly overlap in the communities of the two. I think Gnoggin would be best described as a friendly competitor to The Game Theorists.

I think that what explains the sub title better is that in Birth by sleep at the end the act of Ventus losing his heart and that heart taking refuge in Sora causes Sora to be able to use Ventus' keyblade. So Ventus' "Sleep" causes the "Birth" of the series main hero.
It's been confirmed that after the Xehanort Saga is concluded in Kingdom Hearts III, that a new Saga will take place, where you once again play as Sora and his friends. There are also reports of Square Enix negotiating with publishers about Kingdom Hearts X [chi]coming to the west.
Eh, I'm cool with there being a new saga and everything but I think I'd rather see Sora and the crew ride off into the sunset to make way for a new set of characters. They could honor Sora as a hero across the worlds and players could hear NPCs telling stories about him and Riku and things. I dunno, I'd personally just rather have fresh faces.

Ok so gotta point this out, how in the he'll could they continue the series like they are? Seriously with them using Disney movies as levels they're gonna run out pretty quick at this rate and I can't think that using subsidiaries like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilms would add a lot since only one of them has a substantial amount of IPs to choose from unless they make the star wars level as big as the previous kingdom hearts installments.

Chain of Memories also has a more metaphorical tone in that these memories are being created to manipulate Sora, therefore they're chaining him. I think it's pronounced ki as in X-blade.
"Re:" originated in Rome or something, usually meaning "regarding" or "in/with reference to". It was regular letters at first but email also adapted it. It doesn't mean reply in email, as it's part of the subject name. Forums also later adopted this sort of thing but it happened in email first.

I thought the 2 in 358/2 meant that while Roxas has an entire year, Sora has only 2. While Sora was in the thing, it took 2 days to heal, but Roxas, in that time, had 358 days.
I have a complete story based around the KH series with a keyblade that can be wielded by only one, (Called the Ultima X V due to its design) that can spilt the weilder into 7 parts: themself, light, dark, heartless, nobody, unversed, and dream eater. Each individual keyblade (There is 7 of them) represents one of these forms.
I was always under the impression that the name 358/2 days came from the fact that you play through the 358 days of Roxas' time in organization 13 and the game had an average play length of 2 days. So you're going through 358 days over the course of 2 irl days
Problem. You never play as Xion in 358/2 Days. With that in mind, the title, as near as I can interpret it, actually illustrates the fact that Sora's memories are split between Roxas and Xion: Most of Sora's memories are in Roxas, all except for his memories of Kairi which lie sleeping in Xion.

Chain of Memories, you're not gaining memories back as you progress, once you step in you forget thing and keep on forgetting the deeper you go, and false memories are weaved into place, he might 'remember' 1 thing, but he can't remember anything else as even locations and the people he's already met escape his mind.

Master Xehanort (BBS) is evil and takes over Terra's body, forming Terra-Xehanort, who just goes by the name Xehanort. This guy becomes Ansem the Wise's apprentice, then promptly goes apeshit, makes a Heartless machine, starts Organisation 13 and splits himself into a Heartless and a Nobody. The Heartless steals Ansem's name and is the antagonist of Kingdom Hearts 1. The Nobody uses an anagram of Ansem X as his name; Xemnas, and leads Organisation 13 as the main antagonist of Kingdom Hearts 2.
Actually Xehanort' s Nobody's name is Xemnas. Ansem + X = Xemnas

You can't think of your heart as your soul since Ansem wrote in his diaries that every human consist of his body, his heart and his soul. Also if you take away one of the components away either a heartless or a nobody comes to existence
Kingdom Hearts X is probably pronounced "kai," not "chee" since the character we use for X is also used for the greek letter Chi pronounced "kai" as in kite, without the "t" sound.
Yay Kingdom Hearts!! Love that series so much. Played the first game a lot! And bought a PS2 just for the second. As I did with the 3DS, PSP and PS4... Gotta love it....

I always thought that Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days meant that since the game begins with a flash back to Roxas' first days in organization 13 (then goes on from there STILL in a flash back mind you), it takes place in 1 day, the very final ending of the game though takes place on another day which is 2 days... he us remembering 358 days in only 2 days...
"Re" actually comes from Latin and means "pertaining to". When replying to an e-mail, your reply is "pertaining to" and usually contains or refers to the previous message, thus, "Re".
Fun fact Xion is the first unlockable character you get in mission mode (well the Logic is there)

After the Xehanhort Saga I want the new Antagonist to be what I call "Chasers", beings who are willing to be "Somebody" (like Nobodies). These "Somebodies" wish they existed in the plane in which Sora and company currently reside, where they feel like they are full beings.
I hope they go to where Xehanort was young and we get to play as him as he ponders about the balance of Darkness and Light.
OBJECTION! In coded, you play not as Sora, but Data-Sora, who existed within the digitized journal. The actual Sora doesn't even show up outside of the opening and closing cutscenes.

In KH BBS This old guy says there is an ancient letter called Ki, which resembles an X. Also, the X Blade is actually the Ki-Blade. Just, yknow looks like an X

The Chi in Kingdome Hearts X is pronounced "KEY", much like the legendary X Blade for the KH series.
Just on a random thought... couldn't be that in the title "Kingdom Hearts X" the X is a the greek letter "chi", which is phonetically identical to pronouncing the word "key" as in "keyblade" -> "X-balde" which you can also pronounce "chiblade" using the greek letter chi.. japanese will read it without the strong 'c', alright but that's japan

I was told Coded was between 1 and 2, but i haven't played it yet.

I believe it was announced by Nomura himself that KH3 would be the last game for the Xehanort Saga....so anything that comes after KH3 would be the start of a new adventure totally, and not connected to the events of the previous 7-8 games. The only connection they may have are characters or worlds in common, but the plot would be unrelated to the Xehanort saga
I'd much prefer that after the Zehinort saga The following inslaments stay primarily on home console and focus exclusively on whatever sage come after place after Zehinort saga.
Well I see some problems with his claim about 358/2 days' title explanation.
He says you play as two characters but I don't remember playing as Xion for the story. If you go by multiplayer logic then you can play as the whole organization plus sora, riku( if i remember right ), donald, goofy, and mickey.
The game is about Roxas' solid year within the organization. However, the game continues 2 days over the cap. 357 being the day he runs away, and 358 being the day he tries to attack the organization. I feel it translates to "This game is about the 356 days he was in the organization and the extra 2 days he wasn't".
not "all the worlds we're sleeping" just specific ones that never woke up even after they returned from darkness.
Kingdom Hearts in the beginning was a game I was hesitant to try because I did not know what to think. Of combining Disney and Final Fantasy but now it is probably my number two favorite RPG franchise. Only behind Final Fantasy of course. All hail Square Enix lol. But I will have to say that Kingdom Hearts can be very addictive game series.

counter theorys?: matpat does a theory but if something comes up that changes the theory then it's gnoggin's job to make the counter theory (like the sonic speed and pyro's sex theorys)
and/or mini theorys: like normal matpat theorys but are alot shorter (10 minutes or less seeing how most matpat theorys are around 15 minutes)

Watched this yesterday on a console, so now, blindly from memory, some (one-sided?) responses:
- Chain of Memories: The title's dropped in-game a couple times, from a villain mid-way and Namine in the end-game, but to say Sora's regaining memories is a little misled.
- 358/2 Days: The "over two" does seem most as Roxas/Xion, but Xion's not playable outside of Mission Mode, IIRC.
- [Dream Drop Distance]: IIRC, the "distance" is between Sora and Riku, not the worlds, how they're connected ("Drop") while still being far apart (within their "Dream"s).
...But yeah, those titles. 358/2 Days is the most convoluted, but KHx[chi]'s the hardest to type (because of that Greek leter shizz).
Roxas was only in the organization for 357 days and then Xion dies, the 358th day he got out into the digital Twilight Town. you get to play from the perspective of 2 people.

I would like kingdom hearts to stay on the home consoles. It baffled me that they started releasing the games on handheld platforms. To this day, I've only played 1,2, and re chain of memories on my PS2.

358/2 Days made more sense to me by the fact the story pretty much ended on the 358th day half way through that day. Basically 358 and a half days.

Pretty sure birth by sleep was the "birth" of sora's ability to wield a keyblade after ventus went to sleep in sora's heart. But eh.

one problem though... Kingdom Hearts Coded (and thus Re:Coded) has a DIGITAL Sora traversing this digital recollection of the worlds of KH 1 and Castle Oblivion at the behest of Mickey after the journal that Jiminy recorded the first game's events (and Namine, to an extent, recorded the events of Castle Oblivion) that has been digitized gets corrupted, AND not a post KH2 Sora, who at the time of this game was back home on Destiny Islands with Riku and Kairi.
I can understand how you and others are not too knowledgeable in this title... There was not much story relevance to this title in the original phone game, a little more with the secret ending on the DS, but not enough to purchase it... though finally, on the 2.5 ReMix on the PS3, the cinematic version of this title has enough added to it (2 plot relevant scenes) to finally be relevant enough to the series and help set up KH3 and possibly beyond, but at this point it is just that infamous useless game in the series and most people still don't give its story a second glance (KH VCAST withstanding of course)
The funny thing about the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days game is that in the advert, over here, they some how made the most ridiculous mistake ever....the game, in the advert, was called 357 over 2 days....HOW CAN YOU MESS THAT UP IN AN ADVERT?!
I want to know what King Mickey was up to during all of these events. The most we ever got to know was in BBS. In all the other KH games Mickey made such short appearances but where was he in all of those other times? What was he doing? What was his personal Quest during all of those events? More importantly what happened between BBS and the First KH game? Mickey meets Ansem the Wise somewhere in there right? But Scrooge Mcduck Was traveling with Merlin at first. The Gummi Ships weren't present in BBS. So when did the Gummi Ships start to get used? Scrooge was supposed to be with Mickey at some point or at least according to references in KH2 right? When did all that happen? Radiant Garden was still standing in all it's glory at the end of BBS. So when did it fall? Did Mickey fight darkness or even Heartless when Radiant Garden fell? Mickey met Ansem the Wise and was using Gummi Ships right? It says something about that in the Reports. I think there is still more for Square Enix to explain here. Too much has been left hanging.

That's really the only thing that appeals to me in these games, Not because i'm a final fantasy fan, I ain't the biggest fan of those games. but It's kinda because I'm a disney fan.

The reasoning behind 358/2 Days is literally said “Three hundred, fifty-eight days and a half.” The game takes course over 358 and a half days.
The Soundtrack makes me so sad everytime I hear it but its beautiful.
Regarding KH:358/2 days, you don't really play as xion in the game, or if you do, it's a very small part. I understood that the "/2" was referring to this game being set before KH2. Great Vid though :)
I know everything that needs to know about Kingdom Hearts. I have all of them. I understand the game perfectly, if you're really into it, it isn't that hard to understand. I just watched the video just to see if he got his information correct or not.
Actually, the X-Blade doesn't use the same X that we use in our English. The X is actually pronounced "Key" or "Kye", so the X-Blade can be called the "Keyblade" or the "Kyeblade".

Michael Maximus Because even though Disney owns Marvel and Star Wars, they aren't Disney films. It would ruin the atmosphere that the Kingdom Hearts games accomplished. You might bring up my point about including Dreamworks and Pixar. They both have a similar feel to Disney, That is why I mentioned them.

Michael Maximus Cinderella, Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and several others weren't originally Disney films. However, they were adapted by Disney and are now in the "style" of Disney. Do you understand? Big Hero 6 was adapted by Disney so it has that Disney finish. Marvel and Star Wars are so far from a Disney feel that putting them into Kingdom Hearts wouldn't serve a purpose other than blatant advertising.
Kingdom Hearts would be cool if I didn't hate Mickey Mouse characters and if I gave a shit about Final Fantasy characters.
Now if it was a crossover between Looney Toons and Fire Emblem, I would be all over that in a seconds.

Yeah, I have to agree. I never liked these games because they don't seem to know what tone they're going for. You can't throw together dark emo characters like Cloud with cheeseball characters like Donald and Goofy and expect to be taken seriously!
Hell they could even add in Hanna Barbera and CN characters. Let me think about things for a second...

Ummm actually "coded" probably has to do with the journal as well. Bit of a deeper meaning in all of these names after all. Maybe not DDD or χ though... χ is always lowercase in KH BTW, so it's never actually an x.
The first Kingdom Hearts isn't as bad as you might think, at least among players who actually know full well on how to play the game. I honestly had a blast playing through KH1 Final Mix for the first time.
I thought KH 358/2 Days was called that simply because it spans and starts 358 days before the events of kingdom hearts 2.
