Missed the Tide at Birdham Pool

- Sailing from Royal Clarence Marina, Gosport to Birdham Pool Marina in Chichester Harbour on Zephyr IV, a Westerly Ocean Quest.
We negotiated the passage through the Submarine Barrier between Horse Sands Fort and Southsea beach and then a gentle sail to the tidal gauge at Chichester harbour entrance and up into the harbour to Birdham Pool. We sailed all the way through the harbour to Birdham Pool with a favourable wind, a real pleasure. Then a gentle relaxed weekend except that we missed the tide at Birdham Pool and had to stay longer than intended. Trapped by an absence of water.

Hi Dave good to have met up on Sunday I enjoyed hearing about your time living and working on the Hambale it would make a great winter film
Regards Ken
Hi Ken, it was a pleasure for me too Ken. I think we have a lot in common :-) It would be good to meet up whilst sailing. My email is dave@westcomp.couk. Send me an email and we can stay in touch and maybe organise something. Best Wishes .., Dave
An area I know well, having sailed out of Chy Yacht Basin for several years and even with a shallow draft vessel (catamaran) had to be very mindful of the tides, especially at springs!
Hi Tony, Well that water certainly goes away, I was quite surprised. But we had a nice meal in a quirky cafe and walked round the perimeter, admired all the old boats and before we knew it, it was time to go. A wonderful place for dinghy sailing I think.
Nice to see West Wittering from offshore. That was the beach we would go to as a family as often as we could. I remember walking to the west point where I could see dinghies and perhaps they were racing. The sand there goes right out and I was only knee deep but quite a way from the beach. Not sure if it was a rip tide or just the tide current negotiating that point but I suddenly struggled to stay upright although barely past my knees I had to fight the water to get back to the beach.
@@sallyniemann8360 well that's a surprise, I never knew you went down South. The tidal flow at the entrance to the harbour can be very high. All that water in the harbour pouring out, or in, through quite a narrow entrance.
Lovely place though. Take care, Dave
Hello Dave, I’m really enjoying your videos so thanks for sharing your adventures. I’m interested in doing something similar and wondered what sailing experience or qualifications you have? I completed my RYA day skipper in 2022 and have only done one bare boat charter in 2023, that was a week in the Ionians. I appreciate uk coastal sailing is a different proposition so was just wondering about your experience. Thanks again for the great channel 🙂
Hi William, I suppose I'm reasonably experienced. I took a Yachtmaster back in the 1970's, pre GPS etc and sailed along the South Coast mainly, with occasional trips to Channel Islands and some crewing on bigger boats. I packed up sailing in the early 1980's and took up Gliding. I bought Zephyr IV in 2020 and started sailing in 2021. Big learning curve with modern navigation but the harbours and coastline and tides haven't changed much, so I'm pretty happy with charging round the Solent and channel. I still have charts and use them when in doubt. My advice would be to do short trips and build up your experience and skill set and before you know it you'll be comfortable.
Where are you based ? I take people out fairly often to show them the Solent harbours etc.
@@davesailing thanks Dave, that’s really useful to know. I live in Bristol and would love to join you for a trip sometime.
Hi William, give me some dates when you expect to be available and I'll try and get my time on the boat to coincide and we can meet up. My email - dave@westcomp.co.uk
Dear Sir Robin, please ask your flotilla to try not photobombing Dave on Zephyr IV!
Very good Max, we had a good laugh at that. Bill and I are currently in Newtown Creek I.O.W. JUST COOKING TEA :-)
@@davesailing just got back from a somewhat demanding day sail! Falmouth Week is in full swing, lots of classes racing in Carrick Roads and 15~20 knots from the NW! I made sure I kept out the way but it was a wonderful sight! You two have the most excellent rest of your week!
Just in ! Is that where you went? With love from Curlew River DeltA 26.Ed moored at Royal Clarence.
Hi Tarkon, That was a couple of weekends ago. We're in Newtown creek at the moment. The Folly Inn up the Medina last night and the mouth of the Beaulieu River the night before. Not sure where we're going tomorrow, see what the wind does. Best Dave
Great stuff
