I have loved Laurence since I was 17, I’m now 70 and always watch he movies when they are ow. Such an absolutely beautiful looking man. 🦋🦋🦋
TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES 🎥 🍿 FAN MEEESELF🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I thought he was the most gorgeous man who ever lived.
Great ACTOR AND SOO GOOD-LOOKING 💓💕💞💓💕 BACK IN THE DAY🌹💋💋 RIP
Sometimes we GO BACK to what or whom we are familiar with. I mostly enjoyed OLIVIER in Wuthering Heights as Heath Cliff
I also loved him in Rebecca as Maxim.
That was my favorite movie and book my mother and I cried everytime we watched it truly my soul ached for the star crossed lovers.
@@lola0204 OMG! I loved that book so much! And the movie also, thanks to Laurence Olivier who made a tremendous Heathcliff! After seing the movie, and when I read the book again after, I couldn’t dissociated sir Olivier from the character of the novel.
My favorite film withering heights with my favorite actor laurance Oliver, when I was young I loved those sort of movies and became addicted to this movie 🎥 because of Laurence I was in love with him and although he was 35years older he was then beautiful, rest in peace Laurance amen,God bless you 🌹💗💗💗💗🌹
Loved the actor, and feel honored to have been included as part of his audience throughout his career.
Vivien Leigh was every bit as prodigious a talent as Olivier. She was as strong and breathtakingly intelligent on stage as he was, all the while battling TB and bi-polar in a day and age when it was not understood, and there were no good treatments for it.
So? What’s your point?
Mary Goodson- I agree. Both VL and Olivier extremely talented actors. VL considered Olivier a mentor about stage acting. Seems that Ms. Leigh really understood more about the camera and silver screen. Her iconic roles as Scarlett and Blanche are legendary.
Olivier was right up there as one of the best Shakespearean actors ever.
I wonder how many of that era were stigmatized as mentally ill when it was more the effects of trauma/sexual abuse.
She was a better screen actor than him.
@@terrihilder8217 You’re absolutely right. Vivien was better on screen than him. Hence her two Oscars, while he only had one.
RIP The Great Sir Laurence Olivier ❤
Rest in peace!
@@AgeOfVintage Thankyou so much for your lovely reply 😊
Katharine Hepburn who was very well acquainted w/the couple, as proof she was one of the very few at their wedding, said that Olivier could be incredibly cruel to Vivian and always acted the superior. She therefore had no affection at all for the actor.
this is hard to believe, as katharine was there witness at the their wedding, only a few ppl got invited.
Spot on Robert.
Vivien could be cruel too. Plus she cheated on him with every Tom, Dick, and Harry. That's horrible. And very hard for any man to take.
@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 we only know about womenizer Peter Finch, all the rest is pure speculation.funny nobody came forward to say that they have laid Vivien Leigh, Vivien was ours and I
Have the utmost respect for her
I think Olivier was probably bi sexual. His attraction to men probably bothers him, tried to fight off. Of course you didn’t dare come out back then. Maybe why he was such a great actor. It was a kind of therapy. I do believe he loved Vivian, but she had a mental illness.
I was so inspired by this beautiful man so created a fan group for him on Facebook.❤
I came to understand from reading his book and interviews with Joan Plowright was that his workaholic status came from wanting to be absolutely certain that his much younger wife and family were cared for after he died since he was sure that he was going first.
I always enjoyed his many performances. It’s hard to choose just one and say ‘That’s my favorite’ although the recent remake of ‘Rebecca’ cannot compare at all to Olivier’s original Max de Winter.
He was so amazing in Rebecca, and the sets are like nothing else!
Hi Age of Vintage, what a fabulous bio on the late great Sir Laurence Olivier. He started his career on the stage, & was chosen for many Shakespearean plays. His marriage to Vivien Leigh was quite fraught with many ups and downs. Nobody knew she had Bipolar disorder, for quite a while, she was portrayed as being difficult to work with, but this was later related to her disorder. Olivier was married to her for 21 years before she passed away, of Tuberculosis. He played in many great films including Wuthering Heights with Merle Oberon in 1939. Rebecca with Joan Fontaine in 1940, Pride & Prejudice with Greer Garson in 1940, Henry V in 1944, & The Prince & the Showgirl with Marilyn Monroe in 1957. This was just a small selection from his prolific career. Whilst in hospital in 1967, he discharged himself from hospital, when he found out Leigh had passed away from Tuberculosis. Even though he was remarried, he & Leigh always had remained friends. He married Joan Plowright in 1961 & was still married to her when he passed away. He died of prostate cancer, kidney stones & ultimately was plagued by a crippling muscle disorder which eventually killed him in 1989. He is outlived by his third wife Joan Plowright who is 91 years of age. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺🎬🎬📽📽❤💜💖💚💛💙💕⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘💋💋

He had the most perfect face of any man or rather actor, that I've ever seen! Even that of 2nd best, Robert Taylor!
The greatest actor ever! My favorite.
He was terrific in "The Boys From Brazil".
Yes. He morphed into a totally unrecognizable LO. He was a master of his craft.
In my opinion his performance as Richard lll will live forever as the greatest performance ever to grace the screen. That Hamilton Woman is up there as well.
I loved "That Hamilton Woman", "Rebecca", and "Wuthering Heights."
I saw Olivier's film of Richard lll when I was fifteen, and was the only member of the audience crying because of his death at Bosworth! It turned my love of history from the C18th to the Middle Ages, and has lasted for more than 60 years.
@@soniamacdonald9193 same here. I was about 14ish & my Father (he loved history, all of it),told my Mom I was staying home from school because the local PBS was showing Richard lll w/Olivia. That day was the day I really started to love HISTORY & LITERATURE. My Father gave me many gifts but that one has lasted my lifetime.🌞
@@corineusa1454 Looking back, it's funny that the film drew me to Richard lll because, for starters, all the actors are FAR too old for the characters they are playing ... but we mustn't look to Shakespeare for historical accuracy but for all his other immense talents, including drawing in the two of us and no doubt many others to History and Literature. Best wishes.
Absolutely! Richard III was my favorite character by Sir Larry ❤
I only know Olivier from movies , but I heard SirJohn Gelgud ,Sir Ralph Richardson , and Sir Alex Gunninesx all say the greatest portrayal of Hamel that was performed on stage was by Olivier.
You can see his performance of Hamlet on film!
Yeah there's a version of both hamlet and Henry V (filmed at the crown no less). Both are very good if you can track them down :)
@@halo2d Odd that Richard III wasn't mentioned. It created quite a stir when it came out.
I love your voice . A very professional. suave performance. You did Sir Lawrence justice to his being the greatest Actor of the 20th and the 21 st, Century . Bi polar is a terrible disorder n even medications are not a known cure . I do hope Vivian n Sir Lawrence had some memorable private moments together as well as in performing together. Excellent narrative🤩. Thank you
Thank you very much! 🙂 ❤️ I hope you will like my other videos too! 🙂
Laurence, the great.
Vivien Leighs emotional termoil took its toll on him He loved her but it was messy. He chose to seek comfort elsewhere. Great actor what depth.❤
I have always loved Olivier...so gifted and devoted to his craft. His trilogy if Shakespeare films were groudbreaking. He put together the National Theatre only to be shoved out. In frail health, he worked to the end because he was supporting his family. An intense life...
There so many movies in which Sir Lawrence Olivier thrived... He was one of the best actors of History
So true!
he was the best Heathcliff,
Elizabeth, you are so right ; I can’t watch any other actor in that role. The way he uses Isabella is really haunting (and scary).
Timothy Dalton, my pic
He was the ONLY Heathcliff.
No one has been the best Heathcliff on film as yet in my opinion.
I think so was RALPH FINNES
Bipolar is a sad Disease that Vivian was diagnosed having. Personality changes ups and downs. Being so mean to the one you love. And then loving. Out of control!!
It's difficult being with a person like that and Sad.
I learned in one of my film classes that to prepare for the film version of Othello, Olivier worked hard and learned to speak at a much lower pitch than his natural voice, to better fit the character. The effect is pretty amazing.
And then when the film came out, some reviewers complained about the unnatural "processing" used on Olivier's voice. There oughta be a law...
I would love to see more about Vivian Leigh
We know Vivien Leigh had mental health problems though no fault of her own but still the most gorgeous looking woman in the world.and a terrific actress.
R.I.P. SIR LAURENCE OLIVER . " WUTHERING HEIGHTS" --- THE VERY BEST " HEATHCLIFF" !!!! BOTH HOLLYWOODS BEAUTIFUL COUPLE & BRITAIN. L.O.& V.L. ---- "REBECCA " WITH JOAN FOANTINE "HAMLET" GREAT STAR'S !!! FROM U.K.
That Hamilton Woman is another great film by Larry. I enjoy watching Mr. Lawrence O. on film. He was so graceful.
LOVE THAT STORY
🙇🏻♀️👸🏻
He said he was very happy after leaving her. With Joan I feel he experienced calm, peace, Children Normalcy. Why so little-about Joan & Laurence.?
After witnessing Leigh's performance in "Gone With the Wind'. alone, any man could understand Olivier's lifetime of obsession with her but equally his occasional repulsion. Vivien Leigh was not the type of woman to tread lightly on the consciousness.
He should have not left her as in sickness and health I also think Vivien Leigh would have lived longer as he would have got her in to hospital as her cough got worse, Larry knew her more than anybody else.
@@lawrencesait3432 I agree. There is a lot of guilt to go around. Sadly, as human beings, most of us share in it.
@@lawrencesait3432 well, I gather that she was unbearable. I think he had to get out to save his sanity. He did hand her over to s.o who he trusted to take care of her.
Vivian was wonderful, but Olivier was a genius in the field....no one can compare to him.a chameleon who you could not recognize from role to role.
So true!
100 % agreed 👍
Don't mess with Vivian Leigh, Laurence.
Seems to me, she messed with him.
Loved him in the Entertainer !!
Yes, that is a great movie! Thank you for your comment! 🙂
So many people say this was his finest performance outside Shakespeare. While I love that performance, in my opinion this distinction belongs to his work in 'Long Day's Journey into Night'.
Two highly talented people, and an emotional and intellectual match. Both desperately needing that now highly coveted self love and alignment instead of the approval of others.
Here are the greatest Olivier films I have seen thus far, from each decade:
-"Marathon Man" (1976)
-"Spartacus" (1960). I would put "Othello" in second place, in relation to what I have watch from the 1960s.
-"Carrie" (1952). I would put "Richard III" in second place, in context of what I have seen from the 1950s.
-"Rebecca" (1940)
-"Wuthering Heights" (1939)
My favorite Olivier role was that of Dr. Christian Szell in Marathon Man. The "Is it safe?" scene is acting at its finest. Note how Olivier asks the question in many different tones & not the same way each time.
That seen was scarier than NY horror movie. It terrified me.
He couldn't relate to Hoffman's acting technique. So different from the method.
Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite movies ever.
How dare you discuss who 's better??? The Oscar does not measure a person's talent!!! Both was very great. Larry was classic actor and person.
I liked him in boys from Brazil.
I just watched that again after decades. It's still so good. That fight scene with Gregory Peck was just remarkable.

I loved both actors, but it could not be easy being married to someone with mental illness, back then it was not widely understood, I read that one day she hurt his face and eye, and he couldn't take any more, who knows what goes on, between a couple, both I feel loved each other, but life and its problems get in the way!!!!! Great, fair video!!!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
It was VL who had worn an eye patch because of an injury caused by Olivier. They both went to an event that both she and Olivier attended the next day. In an Anne Edwards biography it mentioned that they had fought the night before at Notley Abbey over Olivier's ongoing affair with Joan Plowright. It is also on another UA-cam video about the background of why she was wearing an eyepatch.

What about Laurence?
Thank you Ruby! 🙂 I'm glad you liked the video and I hope you'll like the others
You might want to check your subtitles: while your voiceover says"hankering" re a role Olivier wanted, your subtitle says "knackering", though perhaps the part was.
It must be very difficult to be married to someone who is molding himself or herself into someone else for a role. Marriage is a difficult achievement, when you work at it, Vivien Leigh was a vision, and Olivier was perfect....perhaps such perfection is hard to live up to.
You said he was disgusted by film not theatre. Laurence Olivier was a huge, and I mean huge, crush of mine. Heathcliff, Hamlet, Richard the Third. I thought he was the greatest actor of all time. I'm sorry he suffered so much, but all the great ones do. They probably need it to go deep.
I've heard stories of where Olivier was not very kind to Vivien as she descended into the dark depths of mental illness. I also read where she walked in on him entangled in the arms of another man (some say it was Danny Kaye) and then he had her committed to sanitoriums and subjected to horribly cruel electric shock treatments. He was a cruel man. I am glad that Vivien insisted on being addressed as "Lady Olivier" until the day she died.
🤔. I’d read a couple books before deciding. Not being facetious, but whatever you’ve read sounds really slanted.
I think they were probably pretty awful to each other, it seems many “great passions” end that way.
I’m sure the both had huge egos, neither of them understood her illnesses or the behaviors it caused in them both.
@@victoriawhite3662 Insightful comment by you. I agree. In several biographies I have read, both Olivier and Leigh could be abusive drunks at times towards each other. What I have gleaned from biographies, there were non- stop parties when they lived at Notley Abbey. Everyone from Bette Davis to Gary Cooper to most of the acting and stage royalty from Hollywood and the UK were there at different times. Even Churchill was in on the act, getting both to appear in a pro UK film "That Hamilton Woman" at the start of WW11. VL had frail health(tuberculosis) and her bipolar episodes got worse as she got older. This was before lithium or anything like that was available. What a shame. Can you imagine how many more movies VL would have been able to do if she had better health? I have read that both cheated. Both were consummate philanderers. Even when Olivier was with Joan Plowright and Vivien Leigh had Jack Merivale in her life I think they both still cared deeply about each other. I have read that they kept in touch by letters right up until VL's death in '67. Letters that were in the Leigh estate after her death.
@@terrihilder8217 great truefull comment.
@@mangot589She was very difficult, cheating on him, being nasty to him. I think that naturally he reacted by not being kind. What do you expect of him? He endured it for a long time and when he could take it no longer, he handed her over to s.o. he trusted to take care of her.
THANK YOU....
Thank you Iris! 🙂
No award nor performance should ever trump how people treat other human beings!!!!
In the end will God will not ask how many awards or achievements you received in you’re lifetime but the impact of kindness you portrayed in your lifetime to others! How did you contribute within your power to make the world a better place! Unfortunately ego and greed seem to take over a lot of people lives.
Olivia spent hours with Vivien after she died she was the love of his life, sexual promiscuity is one of the symptom of bipolar disorder
So they both had bipolar since they were both misbehaving with someone else. Is that right?
@@noregrets7469 l don't understand how people can run
Down Vivien Leigh, she was the greatest actress England ever had,
And the most beautiful, and she was
Ours and not a yank, bye.
@@lawrencesait3432 The truth isn't running down. She was mentally ill. Fact.
When his ex wife the famed GWTW actress Vivien Leigh died in July 1967 Sir Laurence Olivier was full of misgivings blaming himself for Vivien Leigh's misfortunes.
He was partly to blame, no doubt about it.
Got to the end, still wating for explanation for all that sufferin'.
Tough father, sexual repression, a bipolar wife who was nasty to him and ran around with everybody, he didn't like film. Enough for you.
The use of a simultaneous spoken and written narrative is an interesting choice. It obviously allows people to better understand what is being said if they have difficulty with the spoken language or accent. However, it also tends to accentuate just how slowly the narrator is speaking. The average person reads three to five times as fast as they speak. I found myself reading the written narrative and figuratively twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the narrator to catch up. The other alternative was to skip ahead and miss some of the photographs.
The written narrative also creates some problems when there are typos. For example, the narrator said, “Both Olivier and Leigh were secretly hankering for broader fame.” In the written narrative, the word “hankering” was mistakenly misspelled as “knackering”. “Hankering” essentially means “to long for” or “to desire”. “Knackering” refers to the slaughtering of animals. Were they longing for fame or did they want to slaughter their fame?
The woman, Vivien Keigh, is blamed for breaking up Olivier's marriage then ? Really ?! Well, it takes TWO TO TANGO, honey ... maybe drop the misogynistic bias ???
She was mentally ill. Very difficult to take. Grow up!

@@AgeOfVintage Thankyou so very much love Ruth 💖💖💜💜⚘
So tell me which obituary did you use?
Be Kind.
Personally, I thought he was better outside of Shakespeare. Just loved him in Spartacus; and believe it or not, he was a superb Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opposite Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner.
Are you mistaking him as Big Daddy and the other actors? Burl Ives was Big Daddy, Elizabeth Taylor was Maggie, Paul Newman was the son.
I think he was a bit dogmatic. His way or the highway! He had low tolerance for those who were not classically trained theatre actors. He also seemed to hold 'a look of arrogance' in his demeanor. Not sure of the over the top appeal.
Very well said. And politely.
That's yr opinion. A minority one.
At 1:52, Olivier is with Jean Simmons, not Vivien Leigh as captioned. Jean Simmons was Ophelia in his Hamlet.
Very well explained ... Great Channel 👍 New here" just subscribed ... Big Like 💙

Loved him. Named mt son after him.
Best role was in the Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman
Larry was (I only saw him in The Wuthering Heights) one of the greats - plus, you cannot be an actor wihtout theater but you can act in mere movies. British actors are so excellent (those who actually are) because it's probably in their genetic material, just as Russian Ballet is in te Russian blood...also having great schools for thise arts. British actors, at least, with no drama training are not true actors! Theater has no cameras/angles/zoom, you have to act your heart out as Sir Olvier did or Larry as he wanted to be called!
In my humble opinion Olivier and Vivien L. were highly sexually attracted ,but otherwise not very compatible in daily life i found out in my research !
They were highly compatible in their daily lives until Vivien’s illness really took over. Their estate Notely Abby was THE place to be when they entertained. The website Vivandlarrydotcom has a ton of information about their shared life. ( I has zero affiliation with the website, I’m just a fan)
Vivien loved him more than he had loved her.
She also felt he was the superior actor, maybe her own anxieties destroyed the relationship in long term.
But they had some passionate and great years together, what more can you want?
Most relationships are not made to last forever.
Maybe so; over the long term. From an Anne Edwards biography it did say VL considered Olivier an absolute mentor on stage, in plays. And she learned a great deal about the stage from Olivier. She knew her limitations on stage. She didn't have the booming voice that Olivier did. Although it has been said in biographies that Ms. Leigh understood the camera and silver screen probably better than he did. Don't think VL felt as if she were in Olivier's shadow on the silver screen. Both were very talented. And Olivier was a great Shakespearean actor.
Olivier's son Tarquin, from his first marriage has a UA-cam video where he explains that his father Laurence Olivier considered VL the love of his life. And that was when he was married to Joan Plowright. Sometimes when a relationship turns toxic, you have to move on. And they both did. Back then there were few options for bipolar or mental illness.
A lot of his suffering was self induced...
He was obviously HARD on himself.
No offense, he seems a cad.
Well, I had no clu he was disgusted by the theater! I waited till the end but didn't expect your last statement. We may assume he was less disgusted with the latter than with the cinema, where he had such a wild ride with the love of his life, probably felt ashamed of his affairs after Leigh had the miscarriage/contracted TB and the discovery of her Bipolar Disorder as the cause of her personality. His personal life doesn't affect his acting genius, and rumors always surround someone who is this talented! That's for the seedy tabloids and teenagers!
CHameleon yes Olivier. BUT dont forget the multifaceted performsnces of Vivien going from Scarlett O Hara to Her role in A Streetcar Named Desire.Big contrast.😊😮😮

Self obsessed and self absorbed you mean.

Laurence Olivier reportedly had "relationships" with other male actors. I am not supporting or rejecting this idea, but it has been reported by numerous sources. Vivian was said to be distraught. Was the master class actor battling internal conflicts? Who is to say? I simply enjoyed his work, especially in Hamlet. A Complex fellow in any event.
Danny Kay was the subject of the rumored report I saw. Again, I haven't a clue to its validity, but Vivien Leigh was dying of Consumption at the time and deserves Respect. I want Her represented fairly. Apparently, she had cause to be heartbroken. Whether male or female, his meandering ways were legendary.
Vivien Leigh was one of the most beautiful, talented female actors of her era. Her emotional outbursts are commonplace amongst performers, God only knows how long she had been sick with TB. Consumption is not TB in it's entirety. Consumption is the Final Stage of TB. She Was Sick For a Good While. Please remember that.
I hold a very special place in my heart for the forever tortured Vivien Leigh. Please be kind.
@@margueritehudsell4454 i do too. What I've read shows that she was very kind and considerate to others. And when her mental health affected her behaviour, she was very concerned if she had upset others and sought to make amends.

He was terrific as Danny Glover in ‘Othello’
I believe leigh destroyed her marriage due to her illnesses. This was real love but in a bad scenario.
Don't play lightly with repressions from an uber-religious father of this type. Experiences of children, especially at the fragile period of puberty, may have devastating impact.
A year and the title is still wrong.
I'm very sure it's not 'Why Did Laurence Olivier Suffer IN His Entire Life?' There shouldn't be an "in" there, possibly 'Suffer FOR his entire life' but not "in", not in that sentence
I agree.
When he left Leigh no one thought he was a cad. It was widely known that Vivien Leigh was unstable and that she had treated him badly for years, despite her being the love of his life.
You may want to do some reading about what some longtime friends of both such as Katharine Hepburn thought about Olivier after the split with VL. It wasn't flattering about him. It was "widely known" that Olivier had a noted ego. As Ms. Hepburn said, Olivier was a "great actor" and a "small man." Although many true friends understood that as VL's issues with mental illness had put a real strain on the marriage. What a shame this was before lithium was available. It could have made a real difference. I think the marriage had turned very toxic by the mid-fifties. That's not good for anyone, including Vivien Leigh. I don't blame anybody for leaving. It wasn't working at that point. Btw, VL had Jack Merivale in her life. He wasn't the great passion that Olivier had been, but there is a whole lot to be said for having a relationship with someone you can get along with and have peace of mind with. Merivale was very attentive to Ms. Leigh. Kind of reminds me what Lucille Ball said about living with Gary Morton after Desi Arnaz.
Did this narrator actually say: " Bona fidee"? Hahahaha!
Weren't both Olivier and Leigh together in "Fire Over England"? I know she was. That was a good movie also.
