Here is a tenor who could sing Arnold, Radames, Manrico AND Il Duca up tp the very end of his career, with beautiful sound, agility, diminuendi and stellar acuti. Bravissimo Filippeschi. (In this performance, he screwed up "Ella mi fu rapita", forgetting the text and rushing straight into the end... that was the only time I ever heard him fail...)
He was tremendously exhilarating to see and hear when he sang at Drury Lane with the last Italian opera company to visit London. I heard him as Arnold in William Tell and as Manrico and he was by far the most exciting tenor in the Italian repertoire. Unlike Corelli, who looked scared stiff when he sang Calaf, Fillipeschi sang and acted as if he really enjoyed it and knew his audience was enjoying it too. Maybe he is a little over the top here? but who cares when it is done so marvellously.
Out of frustration,I'm being facetious or sarcastic as also referring to my remark below 8 months ago.I think Fillipeschi is terrific.Everyone makes a big deal about how great Carreras Domingo and Pav.are, but none of those 3 tenors were capable of singing this aria the way Fillipeschi did.Yet only 1828 visitors to this page and 14 voters.Enjoy
This is a tenor with truly great versatility. His versatility comes to us in the excellent manner he sings each role and not merely in a total number of roles over 130.Great high notes, mezza voce diminuendo, with full control of his vocals and the ability to be heard anywhere in the opera house.Bravo Mario Fillipeschi
This man was truly a master. Perfect command of his technique in all registers, agility, well-developed head voice that allowed for diminuendos with morbidezza, and economy of breath. Notice how his phrases are smooth like when the clutch and gas meet at the right point? Very disciplined singer who left us these treasures on record to enjoy and learn from. Thanks for posting!
Cos'altro aggiungere? Nulla
A stellar performance, the into nations are correct when speaking &I as if one was speaking them, that is part of the art of singing opera to convey feeling as well as acting the role.Rene
what do you mean you cannot tolerate this is a alive performance and the singer who can sing these high notes HAS to do it.he kept the enthusiasm in the audience. in the studio he does not do it.he sings just the aria is written. best regards
He has the high note, he has even the piano, but not the understanding and the finesse. The rendition is slap-dash despite the piano. He wants to impress but not to make a character. I always had the impression he was stylistically nondescript. The voice is however good.
When Burney visited the retired Farinelli in Bologna he was told following story by his host : In 1731 ,at the height of Farinelli's fame as virtuoso, the emperor Charles VI gave him a gentle admonition ,which ,according to Farinelli ,had been of great service to him (Farinelli) The emperor :"Those gigantic strides ,those never-ending notes and passages ,only surprise ;and it is now time for you to please ; if you wish to reach the heart you must take a more plain and simple road . " These few words apparently brought about a change in Farinelli's manner of singing and from this time one he delighted as well as astonished his listeners .Filippeschi never reached the "delight" stage , he was stuck at the "impress" stage , impress by interpolating a high note at the end of an aria . Of course his road to delight should have been the opposite of Farinelli's who was a virtuoso . Filippeschi couldn't take the more plain and simple road because his road was already much too plain and simple ,he not being a virtuoso. In Filippeschi's case the road to artistry should have included small embellishments ,tempo rubato ,acting with the voice , in short ,rise above the challenge of the printed line and complement the composer .He never made it. I agree he was stylistically nondescript ,his Rossini sounds like his Puccini ,and both sound like a tenor who had business to do ,and his business was to impress .I also agree the voice was very good , it lacked only lyricism in the timbre and more agility in the technique ,and more individuality , to be truly one of a kind .But without lyricism half of any bel canto role falls flat because all interesting roles are lyric-dramatic roles . Without expression and nuance the dramatic half falls flat .
Dear Alex, Filippeschi caresses the music and seems to follow the score pretty accurately. The cadenza at the end of the aria seems very good as well. He's perhaps the only tenor style wise in the category of Lauri Volpi. As you say, the piano is good and so are the high notes. I never cared too much for some of his studio recordings, as perhaps you say '' Nondescript'' but the live stuff here on You Tube is exciting and very impressive. My goodness, would we only be so fortunate to have a tenor like this today or even yesterday. Enjoy
@@sugarbist I agree we would be fortunate to have a tenor like Filippeschi today. After listening again to this recording I still maintain he lacks finesse and understanding but I find the timbre of his voice agreeable, though perhaps not ideal for this role.
@@alexingresss2420 Dear Alex, many great and good tenors have taken liberties with the music in live performances. Besides the decent cadenza, diminuendo, mezza voce`, and ease of singing throughout the aria, perhaps he held the high B-Natural too long as well. Tongue in cheek. Enjoy

What an awful mistake to mention😂. I wish most today tenors forget to walk to the stage. Forever.

A diminuendo, Fillipeschi shouldn't have done that the Carreras,Domingo&Pav fans may get insulted

Easily high D. "King of tenors" Lauri-Volpi said, 3 tenors can only carry his luggages...

A great voice, but when a singer sings the aria again, it's all about the singer and not about the composer or the opera as an art form.
