Daniela, my dad was also a tenor of the old school. Perectly trained. He could sing mi, or mu etc right up the scale perfectly. I miss him terribly. Loving your dads voice. He projects his voicet out there with such confidence. I am so glad I have found this on UA-cam. He has that power like Corelli.

His high C on "o teeeeeeeeeeeeeco almeno corro a morir" (0:50, bis at 3:58) is even more impressive than in the final notes "All'aaaaaaarmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!" (1:59, 5:08) Incredible!
I think the first high c in di quella is always more thrilling despite the singer because the singer is completely "nude" and in the second high c, often times the orchestra and chorus can mask over the singer. Filippeschi's insanely loud trumpet voice makes it that much more exciting
Hooooraaaah! I saw him on stage as Manrico and as Arnoldo in William Tell. He was tremendously exciting and like no other tenor in a dashing, Douglas Fairbanks daring-do style. His voice really was thrilling and generous and full of the sheer joy of singing.
Was NOT expecting the fermata and massive gliss. from G to C at 4:20. INCREDIBLE. Bravo!

Nel 1970 venne a Firenze per la commemorazione di Beniamino Gigli...in una sala attigua al teatro c'era un pianoforte e con l'accompagnamento del maestro Contini eseguì alcuni vocalizzi che partivano dal do 2 al do 4 e facendo vedere a noi fortunati, come si canta, e come si emettono gli acuti senza sforzo muoveva con la pancia il pianoforte!!! Vale a dire che senza il diaframma quegli acuti sono un sogno!!!grazie

guido greco, non si canta con gli acuti e basta. Filippeschi, bella voce sicuramente, ma emette dei suoni, delle note, degli acuti, ma poi per il resto e' un pezzo di legno inespressivo, un tanto al chilo. Kaufmann? E' un grande artista e comunque, meno dotato, "canta" e sa quello che canta. Filippeschi no, pare un carrettiere.

Filippeschi negli 40 e 50 a mio avviso non aveva rivali, almeno in ruoli come questo.In quegli anni se si voleva rappresentare il Tell bisognava ricorrere per forza a lui. Voce incredibile!!!

How is it that a tenor with so spectacular a voice is so little known today?!
Per la scarsissima considerazione che di lui avevano i critici musicali dell'epoca, che gli erano nemici, perché anche gli impresari prendevano molto male il fatto che faceva, ovunque, concerti improvvisati e gratuiti per il popolo che non poteva permettersi i biglietti e, infine, per la sua scarsissima propensione ad esibirsi in teatri molto lontani da casa sua che gli avrebbero aperto mercati musicali enormi. Piano piano il suo perimetro artistico si ridusse, la voce si rovinò per la sua eccessiva generosità e il mondo della lirica fece calare una spregevole damnatio memoriae su questo stupendo ed amatissimo artista che faceva "crollare i loggioni" ad ogni interpretazione (non che fosse una novità: Se Caruso, anni prima, non avesse scelto di cambiare aria ed andarsene a New York, avrebbe avuto una carriera ed un riconoscimento dal mondo lirico italiano forse anche peggiori di quelli di Filippeschi).
Un mostro vocale.

Dire che un tenore come questo non aveva volume è quasi da eretici, io sono giovane per cui non ho avuto la fortuna di sentirlo in teatro ma mio nonno, classe 1896, lo sentì all'Arena in Turandot, ti faceva vibrare i timpani da quanto arrivava e poi il metallo della sua voce è stato unico, pur con tutte le "pecche" che vengono continuamente tirate fuori dagli espertoni, noi amiamo le voci e quello che trasmettono e se l'ortodossia tecnica deve limitare la bellezza del canto puro che entusiasma le platee
Tanto di cappello per il metallo dello squillo...ma é metallo leggero.Ascolta qualcun altro...Comunque,averne oggi di Filippeschi!
Grazie per la risposta, una voce di colore chiaro, forse argentino per dirla seguendo la classificazione in base al metallo, i tenori praticamente li ho ascoltati tutti e li ascolto continuamente, vecchi e nuovi. E' chiaro che rispetto ad altri il colore della sua voce è diverso, più chiaro indubbiamente ma mi insegni che quando le voci sono così estese verso la zona acuta non possono per natura avere un colore scuro, forse Bonisolli è stato un'eccezione in questo senso..comunque per farti capire io sono per Di Stefano tutta la vita..
C'é un tenore unico che accoppia l'estensione acuta e squillante ad un colore cristallino ma con centri pieni,corposi,vellutati,tanto che ha cantato
il repertorio verista in maniera superba:é il fenomeno Jussi Bjorling.Ascoltalo e deliziati!
lo conosco bene, conosco anche una persona che ebbe la fortuna di ascoltarlo a La Scala nel Ballo in Maschera...tenori come lui sono fuori concorso per principio da quanto erano mostruosamente bravi

Poor Millonety 123 down below. This is the first time I'm seeing his reply to me that was posted on the page, but not directly to me. First of all the .56 he says that Fillipeschi almost died ,so he almost died twice because he encores the aria. Then he says that 116 is a horrific diminuendo, which it is not a diminuendo. Then he says that Verdi did not write the high note which is true, but it seems that every good or great tenor has sung the aria with a high C or B-natural interpolation. That is except for Domingo at times. Apparently, He doesn't understand that M.F.'s voice was a heroic theatrical voice. Or perhaps he doesn't like the idea that even Domingo with his over 130 roles didn't have the ability to sing in this heroic style or have Gugliemo Tell, Puritani & Ugonotti in his repertoire. Fillipeschi was a complete tenor singing everything from Elisire D'Amore to Aida Forza and the like, employing mezza voce diminuendo, with great high notes in a verismo manner. He didn't choke in the passaggio or higher as Domingo often did.
In fact Mario Filippeschi is legendary at not scooping! He's the only tenor I've seen other than Galliano Massini and Jussi Bjorling who attack that Bb head on without any portamento or scooping. He takes it very cleanly.

Too much attention on trio bandits. In that time there are a lot of much better singers, OPERATIC singers. Too much noise. Mario is great here, not a shouting like you wrote in post, by some ignorant, but a heroic singing. What a great C with squilo. Yeah, he showed how it hard to sing C and then go to down, but this worth it

Alguien me comentó que le parecía un Kraus en lirico-spinto...y me parece que ambos usan la misma técnica vocal, con una dirección hacia los resonadores faciales, en especial los superiores detrás de las órbitas oculares. En el caso del maestro Filippeschi, cubre solo en algunos tramos de su emisión (el passagio), pero su agudo squillante , brilla como el de Kraus. Ambos confirman mis ideas acerca de la impostación vocal. MARAVILLOSO!!!!

Ma gli due tenori hanno cantato, con una technica vocale similare (piu apoggio intercostale-diphragmatico, e la voce in maschera...comme quando si pronunzia la "i", tutti glia altri vocali gli!!!). Oggi, quasi nessuno canta come queste artisti maravigliosi . Penso comme mi hai detto don Alfredo in gli sue master Class di Santander (Spagna) in 1996-97, che non e perche manca "la presencia de nuevas voces", e per che no hanni maestri di canto con vera e buona tecnica di canto lirico . The public applaused in the middle of the bis for the first (or the third, to be precise) high C. Filippeschi was a phenomenon. A pity he only recorded Mose, Norma and Don Carlo complete. For our pleasure, his Arnoldo and Manrico exist on radio broadcast but with half of his voice, a lot of more modern tenor would had recorded dozen of complete operas... He is just amazing!
I remember my father having a Gugliemo Tell on records with Filippeschi.
He would own the opera house today.
NO he wouldn't! He didn't even in his time, when he was clearly one of the top tenors around! Why? Because big houses little voices that sound 'pretty' whatever that means! Already in those days, the opera houses had begun shifting away from real, quality voices. Tragedy.
@Zubair Hossain Tucker, Corelli and Del Monaco whom all had large voices successfully shared the spinto dramatic roles from 1950 through 1975. There was also room for other tenors with smaller voices that also had great careers like Bergonzi, Bjorling and Gedda who were also very good singers. Fillipeschi also had the ability to sing Mezza voce diminuendo while caressing the music across a wide range of operas
@@sugarbist Yes, Filippeschi was a much more complete tenor than people give him credit for, however, the tragedy is that he isn't as well known as he should be. He had technique to rival Lauri-Volpi!

sugarbist Precisely! He's probably my favourite tenor and in my opinion no one sings the 3rd act Arnoldo scene in Tell the way he does! The high C from the studio version is probably the greatest recorded tenor high C ever!!

I agree with you!!! Although Lauri Volpi was basically unmatched and sung gloriously years before, I read that Filippeschi was the only tenor that at times made him feel intimidated. Those two knew each other very well! It's said that Volpi felt jealous of some amazing performances by Filippeschi. Particularly Aida. However, he admired and respected him immensely. I am NOT an opera purist per say and I am inclined to be open minded and magnanimous with today's singers, but I wonder if we will ever have voices in the likes of Fleta, Lauri Volpi, Pertile, Merli, Braschi, Filippeschi, Barioni, del Monaco, Corelli and other names that escape my mind now. The old school singers were really glorious!!! The state of operatic tenors nowadays is so low standard that it breaks my heart. It is really sad.
@@Verist4 This situation has been a while and is not getting better, those stars they created are so disappointing, we do not even have a Jerry Hadley on stage any more. He said many years ago that " opera houses, they assign singers according to their looks..." You can only pray that another Mario Del Monaco standing as Otello in our life time!

Indeed! Barioni's was much darker I think, though not as big and metallic. Barioni was a wonderful spinto! He sang an exceptional Calaf! Filippeschi however, was a rare true heroic tenor, with easy access to high Cs and C#s and the size of a dramatic tenor. You don't see voices like that today.... unfortunately....

Where are this singers now ?????? answer: NONE. That is the problemin today's opera. I was told by a dear friend who sang with Filipescchi many times, that he never left the theater without stopping the opera after his arias.

Quando si andava a teatro per farsi " prendere a DO in faccia " Poi sono arrivati i direttori " filologi" che giustificando l assenza di queste voci , hanno spostato lo " spot" su di sé A buon intenditor........
