I appreciate it! 😁
So, I still suck at FL Studio...but I'm getting there and damn Harmor and Sytrus are insanely fun.
Maybe I should finally get these Flex instruments going 😅

Dude, if you were to make some tutorials about fun, endless and maybe more advanced sound design with Harmor and Cytrus, I'd enjoy the fuck outta it.
FL Studio is my jam. I've been using it since version 3 about 2001. I have used other DAWs such as Pro Tools, Reaper, Ableton and others. Ableton is the only other DAW that seemed to come naturally after using FL for the majority of my work. I love the concept you present of the shinning metal. Thanks for everything you share sir.
Why you didnt use just Cubase ???/
If only there were a fuckton of official how-to videos and a comprehensive manual covering everything hmm.. :D I used to do the same thinking i will know things just because i have used something similar in the past. But whenever i utilized manuals and how-tos I have saved a lot of time and energy! All the best

Awesome video as always.
Oh damn, imma make a poster out of this and hang it on my wall
This is a great video. Thanks for making it :)
Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy thank you. This was such a great project to do and taught me a ton haha. Probably learned more in these 6 days than I did in the last few months!
agreed! i’ve been using FL since 2009, and it’s sometimes hard to remember that we all approach everything in our own way.
Drop me in Cubase and I won’t remember my own name! But it’s weird to realize that not everyone works the way you do…it boggles my mind when FL confuses others, but it’s because it’s my native tongue :)
My most recent armor test has been working on this album for a client who needed professional-sounding filmscore-y outros, and god that pushed me to the brink of hating the whole project. But we made it, and the label listen through went amazing and everyone’s happy.
Sometimes you gotta test yourself hard, whether it’s figuring out FL or writing a totally new style that you’re totally unfamiliar with.
Proud of you VT for pushing through and winning 🖤
Good ‘ol Fruity Loops
Venus Theory's demo video was really promising for me. I have FL Studio but I am using another DAW for scoring. I once used FL studio for scoring but there aren't many resources to help me make it work for scoring. I hope FL Studio continues to makes it more freindly for film composers. I'm gonna switch back to FL if it does.
@@angeldayao Have you checked out Alex Moukala? I love his stuffs. They are pretty helpful, I think.
I think your UA-cam is becoming one of my favourite channels, showing the struggle through something you're not the best at is something we don't get to see often. Thank you for this.
Now that's a fine, strong last name you got there, sir. #kerrclan
thank you, he is my dad
I'd say let's give it up to Venus Theory. I also have seen this trend with other creators, and let's continue to support our favorite channels when the platform changes too
I love the humility. I went from Pro Tools to REAPER many years ago. I still feel that I don't know what the fuck I am doing but at the end of the day, I, like you, am creating something. Thanks for all of your efforts. They are appreciated and recognized. Thanks!
Dude. You are a legend.
@@toddhatfield5329 the legend is me!!!but not like all of you!!
Haha, I use Reaper and am learning pro tools rn. Hate it lol
FL Studio has been my DAW for many years (since FL Studio 4) and really only for 2 reasons: 1) I had "acquired" a copy of Fruity Loops 3 in high school (which was already starting to implement some DAW features) and had gotten pretty good at it, and 2) when I got my first paying gig, I got nervous about using "acquired" software. FL Studio had just come out and was offering lifetime upgrades for the reasonable price of $150.00. I've never looked back. I recently downloaded a licensed copy FL Studio 21 without shelling out a cent. Now that is bang for your buck.
I used Ableton for years as my daily driver, and spent many months using Reaper as well. Lately, I have gravitated to FL Studio---which I have used off an on for about 2 decades but never dug incredibly deep. In the past few months, I have dug deep and am truly amazed with the depth and the power of the DAW. Totally unconventional with lots of hidden gems. Gol, its primary architect, is a genius.
Reaper, Ableton. FL Studio....tells a persons ability of musicality without really telling us
Yup, i used ableton and fl, and while ableton is pretty cool, i feel like you can do more stuff more easily in fl studio. A lot of "hidden" features that are super convenient
Also the zgame visualiser is a huge bonus
@@Pabloesc571 Childrens toys. I use Cubase along with Native Instruments and Dorica....that is what REAL MUSICIANS. FL Studio and Ableton are GREAT TOOLS because it allows non-musicians to make music
@@HuChing-ob4kk 😂😂😂
I've used FL Studio for about a decade now. There was a time, about 5 or 6 years into using it, where I thought I had reached a standstill. I assumed I had maxed out the DAWs potential, and I became frustrated with how it felt my music wasn't constantly improving like it initially was in those early years. I tried some other DAWs, like Ableton, but I never felt that comfortable with them. In the end, I abandoned my old music project out of this frustration.
Those were dark times; I lost my creative outlet, and in turn, I felt like I also became lost without it. Late into 2021, around Christmas time, I got really high one day and was doing my favorite thing that I like doing when I'm high, which was listening to music. At the time I was really getting into noise and experimental music (Merzbow, Prurient, Sissy Spacek, etc.), and it gave me an epiphany: what if I got back into FL and just threw out all of my preconceived theory and techniques and patterns and just experimented with it? What if I just went all out, like creating a purely abstract painting of random colors, shapes and textures, trying to make something cohesive out of chaos? What if I just... played with it? After all, it started off just being a fun thing to mess with when I was a teenager. Why not try to revisit that mindset?
What ended up happening was something truly extraordinary. I managed to create sounds I had never heard before. I was creating things I had no idea I could even make. Just like that, I was officially back at it. That creative outlet I once threw away had been fully restored and completely reimagined.
I'm fully convinced at this point that there's nothing you can't make using FL. It's not about the DAW you choose, it's about how you choose to use it. Kind of like how they say the best programming language is the one you're most comfortable with, I feel like that can be applied to DAWs as well.
What a remarkably helpful, humble and human lesson from an artist with the heart of a teacher.
I just recently went back to FL Studio after almost a decade of ignoring it simply because I started on it. I’m actually back on pretty much full time. Once I got over the “make unique” thing for midi clips, I realized how powerful and streamlined it does things compared to other DAW’s.
Fl's piano roll is awesome
Its not a REAL DAW it s SOUND-MAKING TOY for "beatmakers" with no musical experience/talent
@@HuChing-ob4kk woah someones really offended by the fact someone uses a DAW you dont like
@@fbiopnpl1200 There is no "offense" in telling the basic truth. I can tell what age group you are in because..ANYTHING you dont agree with triggers an emotional response in YOU which you then start projecting as someone else being emotional..you a guys are just WEAK as people...
FL Sudio was created and market for people with ni musical talent to make them feel they are making music..specificvally for EDM and hip hop...its not offensive to say that..Ive been using DAWS since their early inception..and I used Frutiy Looks (now FL Studio ) when it came out in 1997..
Composer arrangers and REAL musicians do not use Fl Studio or Ableton because they are too limited music wise...nothing for YOU to get emotional about..there is just a difference

fl has a extremely frustrating early learning process but getting past it allows you to hold the entire world of music in your hands
everyone fears burnout but on the other side of burnout is invincibility

Just wanted to give an immediate thanks because I've been putting off becoming a Patron for a while, out of... laziness? Typical procrastination? Other reasons I can probably come up with that are all BS. When I start watching one of your videos, I know I'm going to learn something, not just about you, or about a product or a concept, but about myself. Your presentation styles have grown over the years and for me, you're absolutely worth supporting as a creator, regardless of the subject matter. Thanks for all of your hard work to present us with knowledge that was likely gained from other hard work (or any number of other experience types).
Just thanks.
fl is very convenient there at the top all the icons are available and when pressed they give you work with what you need.and the most significant plus is that a piano roll and a VECTOR-TYPE playlist, that is, they can be made to the full screen and work with the editing of notes!!!But you're professors.....Here there is a genesis synthesizer of the 1st version, because as you know, its second version has recently been released, this is a synth that no one likes, and I used it to create a cool track in a couple of hours that recorded it in 2018.I really like his chorus and delay effects section very much!but there is not a big problem that it works perfectly only in the 32-bit version, but for me it's almost an obstacle, I love this complex and incomprehensible vst synth!!!people are very boring and they can't do anything from a small synth, but I can squeeze out the maximum using even the pitch of the notes, you can get a completely unusual sound.but today is the age of professors and you are all smart here
This is the program I use for my tracks, so yeah, I feel your pain. The first time I started using was so frustrating that I wanted to toss my computer overboard, but then as🤗 Keep using it, You will succeed in the end. And this is coming from an inexperienced music producer, by the way.
haha yah, i finally finished music theory courses and went into fl…I was like “man, and people think learning music theory is hard 🤣” but just like that subject itself, it’ll all click in eventually…although I may just take a premium paid course to speed up the time
@@CosmicHarmony58 good for you, man.✌️✌️✌️
Learning FL Studio is getting harder and harder the more previous experience in music production you have. I believe when an experienced non-FL producer goes to hell he is forced to produce with FL for eternity
@@user-iu2go5fc1h 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@Astrocicada the most amazing thing is that fl studio is the most convenient, the simplest, where all the icons when clicked give full access to everything and almost everything there has a vector interface and I sincerely feel sorry for those who use ableton
You CLEARLY continue to create some of the best music creation related videos anywhere on the 'net, but I must admit that I am interested in the emotional/psychological impact that this journey has had on your life and your willingness to share it and talk about it, because invariably I find myself sharing your pain in my own endeavors. This isn't easy, making music and sharing it with the world or creating it on demand for clients who know f***-all about music production, but I cannot imagine making my living any other way (other than my fine art paintings).
Keep doing you, brother, and I'll keep watching, learning and empathizing (is that a word? Meh, it's the internet, I've seen worse).
Totally agree. The mindset discussion re: creativity is so on point. Have you tried listening to the 'Finish More Music' podcast? It's a goldmine on creative mindset.
@@richardridings7511 No, but I'll give it a listen. I'm pretty good at finishing music. Tomorrow (Monday 2-13-23) I turn in the music for my tenth album since 2010, to my label. More is better, though (as long as the quality remains).
Feeling hella inspired right now. Reminding myself that I shouldn't expect actual flight from the first pair of wings I throw together from canvas and scrap lumber. Being comfortable with discomfort is the hardest part about learning and growing. Your courage is remarkable, bordering on insanity, and I have nothing but respect for what you've achieved here and your sharing of it with the world. Thank you.
FYI: in case you didn’t already know this, one tests one’s mettle (not metal). Just trying to be helpful😀
Another lover of English descends upon the typo with a ravenous gleam in their eye.
Aye. 🍻
Man I had to search for this, I was like “no way I’m the only one” 😭😭😭
My guy just turned opening FL Studio into Rocky movie with them stretching shots and motivational words. Smirk aside, your channel has been a big inspiration and endless library of information on my music journey. Thanks to you for most part on finding and learning gems like PaulXStretch, Vital and Surge XT. I also really like the philosophical aspect you have on your channel to what's/why's and how's of creation. FL studio was indeed my first DAW long time ago.. now on Reaper, talking about the learning curve. Keep them great videos coming VT.
I am also trying to learn Reaper. I had not touched a music instrument in over 15 years. I used to play drums and guitar with a couple of local bands that basically just played the local bars and what not, until the heroin addiction got me. I'm 44 now, and finally have a small collection of instruments to start recording some music. If your serious about using Reaper, I highly recommend checking out Kenny from the YT channel "Reaper Mania". He has content ranging all the way from complete noob to advanced power user, his stuff has helped me immensely.
Due to circumstances in my life, I quit making music back in 2010 and eventually lost the use of FL Studio as I was using an associate's copy to make music up until that point. I've only just managed to finally get a copy for myself and am finally returning to it after 13 years. Even for something that was second nature to me back then, it's... quite challenging now. That challenge and unfamiliarity was manifesting as an overwhelming sense of anxiety on the first day or two. On day 3, things just started to connect. Frustration and anxiety became curiosity and excitement, and then finally genuine purpose and an eagerness to improve. I really wish I had come across this video sooner because this comment will likely be lost in the shuffle, but still. Great video, dude! Thanks so much for sharing this one.
Ive got a TON of admiration for you, SOLELY based on the synopsis of this video(in a nutshell). Thanks for your work, ESPECIALLY for everything you've posted on Pianobook!
Aphorisms are helpful if they are not turned against ourselves. Pushing is good. Self abuse is not. I really liked the steps you outlined for the project. FLS is a great DAW for in the box and all around great sample-workbench. The shortcuts are obscure and powerful - so certainly frustrating. I still prefer Cubase for working with outboard gear, but still use FLS for idea & loop generation. Thanks for more inspiration.
It's encouraging and validating when I see someone I look to for instruction and inspiration go through the same struggles I do. The honesty and vulnerability of this video is beyond appreciated.
I am reminded of my favourite demotivational poster from 25 years ago with the quote “if you can’t do something well, then learn to enjoy doing it badly.” These words have made my life much more interesting.
Great video and amazing advice! Thanks for this. Also fyi it’s test your “mettle”, but I love the idea of letting your metal rust to make it shine again.
Yea, I'm pretty sure he knows that. That's the point.
Classic millennial mistake
I switched to Ableton completely last week after using Logic Pro X for 4 years, I thought it would be a pain but to my surprise I got the hang of it in just a few days and now my workflow is like twice as fast and efficient.
yeah fl studio is just way different than anything else out there. most other conversions are likely easier
What features did you find quicker to use?
@@ethanwimsett the biggest noticeable difference for me is that the plugin workflow is wayy more efficient in ableton, you can add a plugin/effect/whatever in less than 3 seconds by just doing CTRL + F and typing the plugin name, while in logic you have to navigate multiple dropdown menus to find what you’re looking for. Also tweaking parameters is far easier with ableton because basically every effect is “opened” up at all times in the bottom bar, also makes creating new automations far easier. Also the quality of the ableton stock and max for life plugins is really good. As someone that often has 4-10 effects on any sound, the workflow change is amazing
@@ethanwimsett Like all Daws, each have a workflow...And each daw can match your workflow... Not everyone plays, not everyone uses loops, not everyone writes to film etc..
Each to their own I say...
Again.. Whatever works.
Your vulnerability is a wonderful trait. Not enough people on YT are willing to expose themselves in such a manner and I’ll give you a thousand kudos for this video.
This is the way.
The fact that there is so much content on Fl Studio speaks volumes. People who don't even use FL are now trying FL for views because its the thing to do... it cracks me up. Fl gets a bad rap because of its beginnings. It has evolved into a powerhouse. Yet it still gets sh*t on, mainly because its workflow is so different from all the others. First impressions really can be lasting. It started out as pretty much a toy or a game and many think it still is.
It looks like FL Studio may have traumatized you a little bit. My first instinct would have been to reach out to Benn... Thank God for having a power user, to walk you through all of the madness. Great ending! 👏 You seem better, having gone through this...thanks for sharing.
Tbh, what madness? I mean, ig if you use the true madness that is ableton, having a straightforward and easy daw suddenly in front of you can be disorienting, but it's still strange.
@@lexruptorWhat do people find so difficult about Ableton? I haven't really used FL, but to me the UI seems pretty cluttered and confusing compared to Ableton.
@@lexruptor I feel you on that one. Definitely not a fan of the Ableton workflow. I used FL Studio (Fruityloops) then moved on to Logic Pro. I use Studio One now, and periodically take a look at FL Studio, so I get the frustration of attempting specific tasks that are generally fluid, with a more linear DAW. My first return was after 15 years of not using FL...it was a bit weird.
@@lostecho4394 And that's what I think about Ableton, confusing old html website look which is quite uninspiring and it doesn't even have a proper piano roll
@@clickbaitpro Wdym? The piano roll isn't the best out of all of the daws, but it certainly is a proper piano roll that does it's job pretty well. You can also modify it to make it better if you really want. It also looks nothing like an old website, and I can't really understand what's supposed to be so confusing about it. It's only confusing to you because you are used to something else.
I just checked the FL Studio channel for your trailer and man, it’s really really great! You did a great job 👏
Thanks! Definitely an uphill battle for me personally but such a good experience overall, learned so much in only a few days and learned a ton about my own creative workflow.
One thing to remember when using FL Studio ...SAVE !!! SAVE!!! SAVE!!!!!...You can enable autosave times so that when weird coincidences happen youll be able to recover or start from where u left off before your session crashed.
Learning FL Studio was confusing. I thought every DAW had to be like this. When I demoed other DAWs, I couldn't figure any of them out. So, I tried Reaper out of curiosity because it's cheap so I won't lose much if I dont use it later. Hated it at first, but liked it after figuring it out thanks to the youtube videos on Reaper. Then, every other DAW became very easy to understand. FL Studio also made more sense after using Reaper.
Something about the way FL Studio works... Once I used Reaper, all other DAWs just make sense. FL Studio is really the odd one of the bunch.
It's because most daws are made for audio engineers, it's all technical, whereas FL is made for the general end user, so it's simpler, more straightforward, for people who are musicians more than technicians
@@lexruptor true. When you start as a producer, FL is the bomb. But when you grow and become a seasoned engineer, you start to look beyond FL Studio even when there is nothing wrong with it as you just find it less intuitive for engineering. It sure gets the job done, but given alternatives you'd even pick Reaper for engineering.
I think it's rad that you went out of your comfort zone! I really appreciate your videos and your goal of encouraging people to create - thanks! I personally love getting dropped in the middle of something that I know very little about and figuring things out along the way.
This had me chuckling at so many stages through the video. But on the serious side, it also highlights the many challenges we come across in our lives, not only testing our technical abilities but also our mental ones. Once again TOTAL RESPECT 🙏
I scrolled past the Image-Line video in my feed and I thought it was strange to see you were using FL, since you never used it in a video. Then it all made sense when this video came after. FL is my DAW of choice, but I know how quirky it is after trying Ableton. It's not the easiest to understand and there's some things I don't like about it, but good work for going out of your comfort zone.
"Test your metal" is actually "test your mettle" 👍
Thanks. Am Dutch, never heard of "mettle" before.
I'm so sorry you went through that frustration and pain, but THANK YOU for posting this. It truly does help to see (not only know, but see) that even people as talented and skilled as yourself face the same issues and hardships the rest of us face. I'm not yet in my dream job of making sounds/music, but even with a completely different background, I find your videos to be immensely helpful and inspirational. I wish you the best and I sincerely hope you keep making these types of videos. Your music is amazing and these videos are equally amazing.
I really like your dad's quote: "if you feel like the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." Good stuff.
Those 6 "basic steps" you defined are certainly useful to keep in mind! as you go through these "stages" in the creative process it's like closing one door behind you which can also give a sense of progress. I will try to keep these in mind as I go out there and ..
Have always wanted to try FL Studio as well, as soon as it runs on my OS I will do just that.
FL does run on Windows and Apple. No Linux tho'
8:09 I feel personally attacked… but SERIOUSLY thanks for the thoughtful discussion about topics like this.
FL studio is the second DAW I learned 3 years ago and it's the one I have stuck with. So I know how hard it is. I think what kept me going was the community.
In my experience, the fastest way to learn FL I've found is to just hover over something you wanna learn and press F1. On top of that, keep the page of hotkeys open so you can CTRL + F the heck out of it.
Well, Mr.Theory, you're a better man that me. I downloaded and installed a trial version of FL Studio about 2 months ago. About 2 hours later, it was uninstalled. I never want to see FL Studio ever again.
One of my mottos is "Dare to be stupid." Because if I'm not making mistakes I'm not learning. Thank you for having the courage to do in public what the rest of us do in private. I hope it helps someone who thinks they suck.
I've been a die-hard FL user for close to 12 years at this point. I love it as a DAW, and I've found it incredibly inspiring and fun to work with. AND it has a STEEP learning curve. It works VERY DIFFERENTLY from pretty much every DAW on the market. It is so freeform, so malleable, so quirky, that it took me WEEKS of tutorials to even figure out the basics, MONTHS to feel comfortable in it, and YEARS to feel proficient with it. The fact that you were willing to attempt to learn this beast in such a small amount of time is FRIGGIN IMPRESSIVE. Massive kudos.
Honestly I find this inspiring. To see someone who is so cracked at his craft be humbled by changing it up like this reminds us you're still human, and I respect very much that you're showing it online.
Hey you! Just wanted to let you know that vital video reeeeealllly helped me. Thank you so much man! Can’t wait to finish watching and sharing this one ❤❤❤❤❤
This is seriously like the most inspiring video ever!! Thank you so much for all these quotes! Yay Benn for helping! Must be nice.
I get you totally 😂😂😂. As a primary FL studio user making a mock-up of any kind in FL studio is a big pain, that’s why I learned cubase and ableton 😂
As someone with a hard drive of ideas and very little finished projects, this is inspiring me to just sit down and dedicate a day to building something.
I work in the creative fields as a photographer and animator and can complete projects for clients and things I dream up in those arenas, no problem. Music is a whole different beast.
Some of the tracks I’ve made that were the best received were the ones where I sat down and just kept it simple, didn’t over think it and basically willed it into existence.
It’s so easy to get lost in the details and the process that nothing ever gets done. I suffer from choice paralysis and falling down the sound design rabbit hole rather than keeping it higher level and refining it later.
Thank you for your inspirational and “behind the curtains” content. It’s a good, grounded wake-up call that can be applied to many disciplines.
FLS is like a video game. When you finally hit level one, level two will be twice as hard and this goes on up to level 2048.
I think you have one of the most honest and down to earth channels about being a creative on the internet. Massive fan and wish you all the best.
I swear, as soon as you said "Sometimes the most powerful stuff has a learning curve, but that's how you get into the good shit" I got a Unison chord pack ad... The timing was just too beautiful!
When starting my journey a couple years ago, I chose FL solely based on the look and vibe of it to simplify my decision, and I haven’t been disappointed.
Thank you for showing so much willingness to step into unknown territory; it's really inspiring!

then there is learning FL in a few days.
I was a user of FL for a long time. But one day I found that I don't like its' features. So I switched to Reaper in 1 week. After 5 years I never have regretted switching
You probably didn't give it enough time, or you're more technician minded than musician minded
@@lexruptor I had been user of FL for 5 years. I guess it's enough time 😅
@@lexruptor but I admit FL's piano roll is the best 😎

haha! I've used FL Studio since I was 15 (I'm 36 now). Back in the day (when I was 16), I actually wrote a song that ended up in the "cool stuff" demo folder. It was called Unleashed - Ambience Outburst.
Fun fact: Smosh actually used that track (without permission or anything) for their Food Battle series. So you know, over a 100 Million views with my track in the background, and no attribution. Yay.
I still use FL Studio to this day becuase, well... it's what I know, and I love not having to learn something else :)
I am a Cubase and FL user. I love Cubase, but there are definitely some things that FL is amazing for. One advantage over Cubase is that FL just references audio files rather than store them in a project folder, which means you don't have to copy all your samples into each project folder. FL also has one of the best piano rolls in existence.
I entered an audio academy wanting to play with FL Studio so bad and not knowing what Ableton Live was, now I graduated and Live is my all time favorite while not wanting to touch FL Studio ever again. Pretty funny how things can turn out.
BOTH of those arent DAWS but soundmaking toys for people with no talent
This reminds me of of when I just started out as a chef few years ago. I always knew how to cook food at home for my self and so occasionally I did agency work for a stadium and hospital where the work was very easy I only had to cut the vegetable or food the food was already cooked and I had to plate it up. Then I realised I like cooking more the more I worked for the agency I was in my safe zone and didn’t wanna get out . I had opportunity to work for a better agency with better pay but it was for an actual chef position. This is where I really started cooking and it was really really hard at the beginning, there was many times I wanted to give up but I had a very supportive girl with me who always gave me words of encouragement and after like 2-3 week I entered a new level off cooking and I sharpens my steels.
As an FL Studio producer and composer for some 16 years, this is how I feel with Ableton and Logic lmao.
FL Studio is a great DAW. I have been using this program since 2006. I started it when a student told me to quit Magix Music maker and really start making music.
It wasn't FL that taught me how fun playing with effects is, I'll always give Magix credit for that.
Was I the only one who didn't struggle with FL when learning it? When I was learning I just had the manual from Image-Line open all the time until I didn't need it anymore. Now I'm learning Ableton at the same time!
bro reliving my 6 years in 6 days
I have 10 yrs in FL, and I confidently feel I know 20% of it, lol. Sometimes I'll prank someone when the say "Oh wow that's so cool I want to do that..." I say sure here's a disk with Fruit loops, you'll have so much fun!" And I wait for when I see them again lol.
Great video with some beautiful messages and super useful information, Cameron! Learning is such a complex process… it requires a lot of perseverance to overcome challenges and tackle that which is uncomfortable, but without that effort growth can be pretty slow (or nonexistent). Thanks for your work and keep on keeping on!
I used FL Studio for many years and still love it. I switched to Ableton like 4 years ago and must say I prefer the workflow, sample-handling, racking, GUI etc... but FLS will always have a place in my heart.
step 1 - foundation: gotta give the thing existence
step 2 - details: gotta give the thing life
step 3 - define: gotta give the thing a face
step 4 - refine: gotta give the thing purpose
step 5 - subtract: gotta give the thing only the right things
step 6 - assess: gotta give the thing one last look and do not look back
OK, I thought it was some review-ish-based video, not an existential essay. 2/3 into this and still nothing about FL directly. OK, well, just misunderstood.
Really auspicious timing for me to be seeing this video … I’ve been learning a new daw myself and feeling a lot of these things, minus all of the time crunch, professional stress, and general existential angst … The message still resonates. Love your videos and your music. Thank you for being Venus Theory 🫡
10:46 Made me think of the classic quote: "Dude, sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something." - Jake the Dog
"delusional provocation of perseverance"
Man, you sometimes just hit it so on the mark.
I'm an academic (music is just something to do when I get free time, but much of my research does focus on motivation and perseverance), but I can't count the number of times that things you've said apply to my field as well. But this was definitely one of them! Thanks.
I don’t get to experience the financial pleasure of getting paid for my work, but after 20 years of changing DAWs 3x and just recently buying an MPC, I feel every bit of this!
I wrote that I hated Ableton and had tried it 9 times 4 weeks ago.
Last week, I completed my first Ableton live course. 11 hours!
I’m about to start another! Who knows what you can accomplish!
What freaked me out was when I seen what Tim Bergling (Avicii) did in FLS... when he was only 23 yr old! I said he sold his sole to the Devil. He said he learned it because it was too cold where he lived and never could go outside. That's not it because I lived in a small town and there not shit to do lol.
Dude lived in Sweden, _It gets REALLY COLD_ in the winter (and if you live near proximity to the Arctic Circle, you get 30 days of night…without the vampires )
Thank you for this video. I needed this, and I have the same problem. I'm learning FL studio as of a few weeks ago, and I know the struggle. This has changed my perception on learning it, and has inspired me to make something awesome.
Cameron, I just added this video to my shortlist of favorite videos ever. And as for the final result, if ImageLine decided to put your video right beside a video made by a man with 20+ years of experience with FL Studio in their bundle page, I would say it was at the very least good enough. And considering it all led to this video here, I can safely say you made something (two things, actually) awesome.
You did great, Cameron, and you made us proud. Thank you.
Thank you for all you do!! Amazing work as always.
This happened to me yesterday but with Reaper. Never used it before, had 48 hours to score a short film, and I decided to go with it because i could playback the video while recording midi (my first daw was LMMS, quite limited in that aspect). I had to learn a lot about the program in little time (fortunately it wasnt as unintuitive as i had feared)
The main pressure was the time limit, and had to compromise a lot on constantly playing back my tracks to judge them. This made me just compose and compose to get the full, action-synced, leitmotif charged score that was required. I think it definitely could have ended up better with a day or two more, but after all... it is done, and honestly im proud i could pull it all off in just two days and with a daw i handt ever used properly before.
That line you used about assessment "one last look, and do not look back" is exactly what i felt before rendering the mix. Metal tested.
"If your goal is to reach the top of a staircase, every step except the final one is a small failure. In other words, it's impossible to succeed without failing many times." - guy working at Game Stop.
I wish more creative folk put out honest things like this. It's much more reflective of the real process. And the thing is that we all know that internal, what, despair/fear/hopelessness/existential-angst-way-out-of-proportion-to-the-reality-of-whatever-the-specific-project is... But seeing someone else go through it, too, makes it easier to bear. Or, well, that may not be true. It still sucks just as much to go through it. But when you can remember that others shared that same feeling, you don't feel so alone and like the spotlight of failure is shining just for you.
You are awesome man. Thank you for your information and life education experience that you share with us. I hope in the future to can afford to be your patreon too.
hahahahhahahahahahahah the anger is a added plus of fl studio lol
Also this video would be completely different if you had an fl key it takes out some boring stuff if you are used to a mpc type workflow but the whole controller was worth it for the undo redo button used it to many times to count already forget ctrl z
Just before you went on to ask for help I was thinking "this guy needs to ask for help", so that made me very happy. I'm a data consultant 9-5 so I've learned by now that if you find yourself in a situation where you need to do something quicker than you're able to learn to do it then IMMEDIATELY you should seek help. glad you did it bro! :D
used fl for 15 years, switched to ableton and I love it tbh
Love your honest approach man! Very inspiring and true.
I really enjoy hearing your take on the whole creative process/creative life. You put such a lot of thought into these videos. I always go away with plenty to think about and quite often, there are things that are applicable to other aspects of life too. That kind of intellect shared for the benefit of others is gold dust - thank you!
I decided to get "serious" about producing music somewhere in april. Threw out my old "collective" FL Studio 12, got a license, a midi controller and some VST stuff.
Ever since, I've suffered under the self-imposed pressures that weren't around when I decided to make some effort. But funny enough, as it does interest me, I do learn - albeit slowly.
Fruity's straightforward look is somewhat deceptive IMO. But I always feel warm inside when I realize just how limitless the possibilities are. It's without a doubt the best deal on software I ever got. And I don't say that lightly.
With some luck, by this time next year I will have found the confidence to call it a day on learning to be able to play, and start playing again to be able to learn.
I think it's important to show that it's not easy. It's not a walk in the park. This is a great motivator to when times are tough. That all artists go through this. And it's a part of the process that must be accepted to move forward. Amazing video as always.
I am a long life user of Cubase, composing, arranging, recording, mixing, teaching. One of my students was insisting on learning FL Studio. I was resisting, I have no time to learn a new DAW. At the end I bought it and I started learning it the last few days. It gets me frustrated, simple things running or setting up in cubase seem like a huge obstacle here. The piano roll is missing (or I think it is missing) things I was expecting to be there and simple! Thinking to give up but then again I bought it. I will give it a try. FL Studio people there may be things in Cubase that you can learn from! Still there are some very good things in FL Studio. Some others not so good though…😮
As an FL Studio user who is learning a new software that has nothing to do with audio, this is pretty inspirational.
The metal….. Nice. Also, is that beer you’re drinking? Nice. Do it live! Drunk!
Your videos help me a lot. I turned 30, studied music now electronics and making music was always hard. But always worth it. It is getting harder for me to keep going and many of the problems i have, seems like you have them too. It is kind of cool to know i am not alone with the struggle. The struggle not to quit, even if you could anytime.
Yesterday, I was setting up to play a game for a bit when I started listening to this in the background. The message really resonated with me. I'm very much a beginner musician, and being keenly aware of it, frequently run into challenges to my skill. However, after listening, I felt inspired and encouraged. So, I saved my game file, closed it, and sat down to work.
Several hours later, I finished a little remix, from start to finish. It's my first time doing something like that, and I’m actually quite pleased with the result. So, I decided to play the game I'd started earlier and chill until I'd get tired. It turned out, I had saved my file as the prompt that pushed me to begin: "Do Or Do Not". I am very happy to report: I did.
Thank you for making this and sharing your insights.
I love the attitude, love the spirit of testing your metal, love that you didn't give up, and the final result is awesome! Thank you for planting the seeds of growing as a person, as a creator. "go out and make my metal rust", I'm on my way~
love your work mate.. the score sounds great.. youve created a quality channel..

One important "saying no / yes" to projects is **Scope**. If the challenge that is presented seems bigger, then gauge the time that will need to be spent. As you take on projects estimating that time becomes a crucial skill. Then you'll be able to take those more left field projects knowing that you're not gonna spend an eternity on it fumbling around with the tools
This is how I feel any time I try to learn ableshit. FL Studio user for past 15 years. 10:37 is pure gold. Nice video.
