Arcturus Military Wool Blanket Review: The Best Wool Blanket?

  • Review of my Arcturus military wool blanket:
HEAVY AND WARM - The Arcturus wool blanket weighs 4.5 lbs, with a density of 550 GSM (that means nice and thick). This blanket will keep you warm, period.
GREAT LOOKING, LONG LASTING - Loom-woven and hemmed on all sides with contrast lock stitching, our blanket looks right at home in the field or on your couch, while standing up to rugged use and abuse.
PLENTY OF ROOM FOR ALL - Large size (64" x 88") size will keep you and a friend cozy while camping, at a tailgate, football game, or an outdoor concert, or just as an emergency blanket in your vehicle.
80% WOOL - Wool is a time-tested natural fabric that will keep you warm, even when wet. The remainder of the blanket is composed of 20% hypoallergenic synthetic fibers for durability and washability. Wool is a naturally fire-retardant material. The blanket itself is not treated with any additional flame-retardant chemicals, making it safe for you and your family.
MACHINE WASHABLE - We make it easy to care for your new blanket. Your blanket is machine washable. Just set it "cold" and run a delicate cycle. We recommend using a detergent formulated specifically for wool for best results. You can also hand wash these if you prefer to keep shedding to an absolute minimum. To extend the life of your blanket, we recommend line drying, if possible. Dryers are hard on clothes and blankets alike, and line drying is much gentler. However, maybe it's the middle of winter, maybe you live in an apartment, maybe you'd just rather throw in in the dryer. That's OK! Just tumble dry on low heat. Note that there will be some shedding during the wash process. This is normal for loom-woven blankets, and you'll notice your blanket gets softer with each wash.

I just picked up an 80% 3lb 66"X90" wool blanket from Amazon for $25.00. It appears that the same blanket is selling for $70.00 so...I saved $50.00 by purchasing a different brand name, and I am very impressed with this blanket. I went back on Amazon to take another look at the Arcturus, and I think this 3 pounder just became a ground sheet for my bed roll! I don't have it yet, but I sure am looking forward to meeting it. I am already in love with this blanket; can't imagine how I'll feel when the Arcturus arrives. Very nice video. Thanks for the share, and be safe out and about in the bush!! Peace!

Ever since my old camping gear got pillaged, I was wanting to make a new camping gear setup. I recently did and when my sleeping bag arrived, i found it to be very bulky! I don't care so much about weight...but i need everything to fit inside/around my pack. I started to remember back when I was a small child. My grandad's old navy blanket from the 2nd world war was my blanket as a child. It was small, warm, and itchy. I started thinking about maybe getting another one. My sleep system already has the arcturus reflective tarp as my

Whipped edges are nice. i was lucky enough to get a couple of wool blankets at yard sales.. Looks like a good one.. My one i got from Amazon I put through the dry on "air" with a fabric softener sheet, because it needed to be freshened up. A lot of fuzz comes off.. i got an old style blanket pin at the same time.. that on stays in the Jeep. Thank you for the review, Steve

    • @pennsyltuckyreb9800

You need 100% wool for it to be completely fire safe. Anything less you're risking definite holes in it if an ember lands. I had a wool blanket somewhere in the 70-80% wool range that got completely shredded up by fire embers and I was being as careful as possible.
I scour antique stores up here in the North East and down into mid-Appalachia for vintage Hudson Bay Point blankets still in good condition and I restore them with lanolin oils and brush out the nap. Usually prices are around $150 USD for a 4 point in good shape (though current times have made prices skyrocket). 100% wool and the best wool blankets ever made.
I pack in both a "compact" -4° synthetic sleeping bag and a 4 point HB, especially in winter. The wool blanket is a great ground cover, warmth around a fire, and I'll stuff it inside the bag and be toasty warm (and not sweaty as the wool wicks away sweat) without needing an all night fire. With those and my other gear, food, water, etc....pack weight is around the 40-50 lbs mark (I'm not a grams counter thru-hiker, I like to be comfortable) which in the right pack that carries the weight well it's doable. And I have significant back, neck, and shoulder injuries.
If you're considering putting in many miles a day thru hiking though I wouldn't consider hauling any wool blanket...ha. They get heavy.

I do not trust any wool blanket to keep me warm in below freezing temperatures that is smaller than a Hudson’s Bay 6 point blanket (90” X 100”). Unless you are a very short or very fat person, this Arcturus blanket is too short and too light to keep you warm through the night. Open up your wallet and buy the right blanket once.
