    I've had a wool blanket in my life for as long as I can remember and beyond. I'm a hillbilly from down in the Ozarks, I'm 73.
    I like this, it is something most people don't ever consider or, even think of. In the Marine Corps part of my field issue was a wool blanket, a light weight stop rip poncho and poncho liner. There were a few times we even drew field jackets. In ITR and BITS,right after boot camp, we were taught numerous strategic uses of each of those three main field issue items,,,
    Good video, thank you young man,,,Semper Fi mac
    It can get cold and wet out in the bush, even on a firebase you spend at least 20 hours a day out side,,,no matter the weather,,,

    As a kid I put the corner at my head, made it hang over, cover my face, sit cross legged on the blanket, pull the lower corner up by my feet over my lap, and cross the 2 side corners over me. I would fold the triangle covering my face under, so a double thickness on my pate, and face free.

    I had friend fixate on what she called a marsh dress. It was a large tube of fabric found in the marshes of Northern Europe. I think the size went from wrist to wrist and floor to above your head. Then there was a clasp or two. While in the tube you can over your head, clasp it at the shoulders, shift it forward, use a belt, create a pocket. Very much the same here, but in a tube.

    • @123elnat
      @123elnat 5 місяців тому +1

      Just for the record and for anyone interested in researching this further, the technical name for that kind of dress is "peplos," and they were often open at the side instead of sewn into a tube. I know of only one or two that were recovered from Danish peat bogs, but they are commonly illustrated in Classical and Hellenistic Greek art.

      @@boa1793
      If my memory serves me correctly, it appears to have been the standard female dress in northern and central Europe up until the early Middle Ages, aka Dark Age, when it was replaced by dresses more along the lines of a long male tunic. It is shown a lot in Greek art, but since these depictions are largely of goddesses or other mythological figures it is possible that the illustrations reflect an earlier costume rather than what Greek women actually wore at the time. I might have an article on that somewhere in my archives...
      I suspect that one of the reasons why it persisted so long is because it would be very easy to accommodate pregnant and nursing mothers, since it is essentially refitted every morning. I did a guesstimate once that a wool dress represented something like 500+ hours of labor - shearing, wool-prep, dying, and weaving - so doing away with the need for dedicated maternity clothing was probably appreciated...It is of course possible that there were climate specific reasons as well. If your friend wears one a lot she might have some insights.

      @boa1793 5 місяців тому

      @@123elnat , Thank you. That was good info. I haven’t talked to her in decades! I’ve thought about how long they put into making those “dresses.” Their wool was probably uncomfortable, too.
      I love watching costumes in movies about the 1800s because they hadn’t figured out sleeve fitting yet. That and tall the ways tailors try to make a sleeve fit. It’s just so fascinating!

    Your video reminds me of a book I read by Jean Auel called Earth's Children (a series) where the "cave people" used all those folds like pockets to hold things that they would gather as they went along. I'm hoping to find a video that would show how for that. Stay safe!

    I really appreciate your video, it makes blanket robes much less complicated when I get up early and am sitting here at the computer in my underwear drinking coffee and watching the Trump news. I've been Buddhist since before birth and I hope you will not give it up entirely because it is not in conflict with Christianity. Christians in general are just in conflict with Buddhists. Many people have tried to convert me, heathens are hard to find these days. I politely resist. But you can be both, if you are open-minded.

      My American high school best friend, whose ancestors came from Asia, met in what used to be a small Texas town (several decades ago) filled with misinformed generational concepts, often would correct people who called her oriental.
      She’d say, “People can be Asian. - **Things** are oriental!”
