- The Ascent is the largest Subaru ever built, and there is plenty of competition in the midsiuze SUV segment. On the outside you will notice the Subaru traditional grille, LED lighting, 20in wheels, and raised roof rails. On the inside you will be greeted to soft touch materials, 18 cup holders and plenty of cargo room. Under the hood is a 2.4L turbocharged flat-4 that produces 260HP & mated to a CVT. Getting power to the ground is Subaru's symmetrical AWD system. Ia the 2021 Subaru Ascent a better midsize SUV than a Kia Telluride?

We have had our Subaru ascent touring for over a year. It has been extremely reliable and a very luxurious competent SUV. We originally wanted the Kia telluride but dealers were charging five to $10,000 over MSRP. We got 0% financing for five years and $2000 off the MSRP plus a very knowledgeable and competent dealership in San Antonio Texas. When you have a new vehicle you have a relationship with the dealer whether you like it or not. I just couldn’t trust a dealer willing to gouge his customers five to $10,000.
I just ordered the Telluride for MSRP. Just have to be willing to wait 3 to 5 months. Can’t wait

Got mine in February and sold it in October, couldn't wait to get rid of it. Whoever decided to use the CVT was drunk and whoever thought that having the car chime at every single thing is added safety didn't think about the fact that this drives people nuts and makes them want to actually crash to stop the noise abuse.
@@Eliehbk a belt/pulley style CVT isn’t a strong enough transmission for a heavy vehicle like this.

I just bought one and it's excellent. Love the boxer, the CVT, lights, cargo space, and the zoom! Just a very cool car.
We just traded in our 2020 Ascent Premium for a new 2022 Ascent Limited last week. They gave us almost what we paid 2 years ago for trade in value- unheard of. We did it because the 20 has a recall on it and the fix is not available. Easy call for us. My wife loves it. We had to order it since every new Ascent was either in transit or taken at this dealership. We added the Pano sunroof package- comes with 8” multi media with Nav, Harman Kardon with surround, stowable cargo cover and rear bumper cover.
Just recently purchased the touring edition for my wife. This is a great vehicle. The ventilated seat button is exactly where he pointed to in the limited. This is a great vehicle for a first attempt in a very crowded market.

Hey Joe, great review and funny also. I drive a 2020 Outback Touring XT … the Touring trim will give you ventilated seats. I agree with you as to the placement of the rear window wiper: placing it under the spoiler makes more sense since it would accumulate less dust and dirt when going over landing. We see you, Subaru!!! I remember the B9 Tribeca and its quirky styling then they dropped the B9 and toned down the styling and look at them now, bringing the Ascent!!! It has a lil ways to go to make it really stand out in the crowd but it's good for what it is...18 cupholders!!!! That interior is a good looking package too...ditch the CVT Subaru and improve the quality of the powertrain and boom, you'll be a in a waaaaaaaaay better position. Stellar review as usual Joe and Lori!!! Y'all got a breadth of coverage unmatched by many!!!

Have had mine Subaru Ascent Premium for a week and loving it
I've got a Touring model (7 seater) with a 2" lift kit from LP Aventure, Black Rhino wheels, with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires and absolutely love it! The lift, tires, and wheels completely changed the look and driving dynamics for the better. I'm spoiled by the java interior and ventilated seats, too.
Alan tell me more. I am considering the LP lift. Still loving it??
@@willbluem7745 - Absolutely! Zero issues with the kit. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t hesitate to go with LP again.

I think this is a good start into the very competitive midsize suv segment but I believe Subaru has a long way to reach to the top competitors of this class. It's a good first attempt but definitely improvements are needed. As well drop the CVT none of the competition has one. I'm scratching my head on why subaru decided to go with a CVT here

Actually, it's not Subaru's first SUV. That was the Tribeca introduced in the US in 2005. But NO ONE wants to remember that epic failure.
Because they don’t have anything other than CVTs and they’re not going to develop a new transmission just for the Ascent.
@@kermit1 On the other hand Nissan learned their lesson with the Pathfinder and replaced the CVT with a traditional torque converter AT.

Ok! I'm saying this as a person who has worked for Subaru before. That Ascent is beast. I drove that thing and I'm claiming WRX 0-60 times here. I'm actually looking at the Onyx Edition because to me, it kinda gives off a sporty vibe. Now if there were an STI model with a raw automatic instead of the CVT, was in the works, I'd heavily consider.

Palisade is the best on the market at the price range. Full digital gauge cluster, power folding 2nd and 3rd rows and the best looking wheels on the Limited trim.
Great review as always Joe! I would go with the Telluride over the Ascent. The Ascent seems outdated and after having an Altima, I wouldn't ever own a car with a CVT. They are terrible transmissions.
When you're a Type-R owner and park next to an Ascent ONYX Edition and can't stop the double takes... it says it all 😊
Pleasantly surprised and impressed. I was hunting a Telluride SX Nightfall in Colorado Springs and like others the $10k ADM is ridiculous at KIA. For God's sake, Porsche has a $10k ADM and the value/investment is FAR GREATER than KIA. Subaru is doing excellent at MSRP.

Excellent video. I've owned a 2011 Outback since new, and my daughter owns a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT since new. I think that Subaru tends to evolve their exterior designs ever so mildly vs Hyundai ( & sister company Kia) in complete overhauls.
I think the difference between Subaru & most of their competitors is that Subaru tends to focus on buyers who look for more practical qualities in their car rather than superficial aspects to a car.

a beautiful SUV , some small changes with the overdo of the Chrome. You can do the dark Chrome on the grill and replace the endless chrome on the back with the same dark chrome or something else. The excess chrome gives it a lower look of price value.

I am digging the Ascent more every time I see another video showcasing its additional features including the off-road capability of the Ascent. I have totally scratched the Telluride off my vehicle purchase list now. A new 2023 Subaru Ascent Limited or Touring vs 2023 Honda Pilot Trailsport video would be helpful to see once the Trailsport is available.

I would like to see that comparison too, although I might prefer to see the Ascent vs. the Pathfinder or the Ford Explorer. At least in Canada, the Pilot is significantly more expensive than the Ascent, even though you get fewer features. The Pathfinder offers similar value to the Ascent, but I like the adaptive headlights on the Subaru. The Ascent is currently my #1 choice, but I am holding out for the Mazda CX-90 to be released before buying. I am sure that the Mazda will be more expensive than the Ascent, but if there is a reasonably priced hybrid trim, that is what I will get. If the premium for the CX-90 hybrid is too much, then the Ascent seems like the clear winner for my needs. Not really sure I understand why everyone but Joe seems to think that the Telluride and the Palisade are so much better.
Telluride ride was stiff, inside seemed plasticky, Palisade was a dream, but still felt high and had to apply more pressure to the accelerator. Ascent had a comfortable ride but still drove like a car. Small hint: the boxer transmission is a revelation - lower center of gravity for better handling and only Subaru and PORSCHE use them.
CVTs would be awesome if they were manual.
No really, imagine having a afterburner-style lever that lets you set your ratio, that would be a new and fun way to drive

Subaru Ascent reminds me of the Isuzu Ascender. It always sounded like Ass-ender.
But Raiti... When are you going to do a review on the Chevy Trax? I have seen one for the Sonic RS & Sonic "Turbo", Malibu, Impala, Camero, Corvette, Blazer, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, and Silverado. But none for the Chevy Trax. Also, Lori you are doing a fantastic job making the cars and Raiti look great.

Paying insane markup prices for a Kia…. 🤦♂️
*The most buffoon decision anyone can make is paying $5-10,000 above msrp for a Kia Telluride that will ultimately leave the buyer upside down in their purchase.
Be smart and pay at most sticker price, but preferably less at closer to dealer price.
This can be done with Subaru, Mitsubishi and in some rare instances even Hyundai.
All of these vehicles will provide you with at least 3-5 year warranty and will be a smart buy. Subaru vehicles being the one that will hold its value the most.

Because KIA and Hyundai’s entries are the #1 and #2 rated in their segment, respectively.

Idk. It looks like a 2015 Sienna and a 2012 Mazda CX9 had a child. Waiting on my 2022 SX Nightfall telluride...so I'm a little biased. Plus, I like the tow capacity and HDA on the Telluride too vs this. 😁

I bought the exact same vehicle in the review. I was looking at the Telluride before buying the Ascent. I am glad that I did not buy the Telluride though. I cannot stand when dealerships want to charge such a huge large amount of money over the asking price of a car, in my opinion its stealing! If you get into a car accident and you paid 10k over the msrp, which is what the Kia dealership I went to was wanting to charge me. I went to the Subaru dealership in Pensacola Florida and they were not charging that stupid markup. For what my family needs, this is a great vehicle for us. Plus I prefer a Japanese built car vs a Korean made car. I think they build a much better high quality car vs Korean automakers. The eye sight technology it amazing. I think the Ascent could be a little more sportier than what it currently is, and wish they had a hybrid version, since this suv gets such terrible MPG's. The cvt does take some getting use to, especially in lower speeds as the vehicle is not sure which gear it should shift to. Other than that another great review from you Joe. I appreciate your honesty when reviewing every vehicle. Keep the videos coming. Lastly, in your own opinion, would you have purchased the limited trim for 43k vs the Telluride which for 43k would be a base model? Thank you again for your time.

Great job on the tour, as usual. I do like the safety eye watch system camera and a couple of other features. However, I would not trade my Palisade Calligraphy for it!

Telluride offers so much more: comfort, tech, sexiness, and charm
These have always looked more like a car than something like a Telluride. My first impression every time I see one. The one I drove had very light (disconnected) steering. Good power, though.

Hi joe and Lori, (the Subaru head lights looks like a older Tesla model s and the old Volvo s60 (becuase the headlight assembly is chrome no black), anyways just by the exterior styling I choose the Kia Telluride, but what would you choose. Or more vehicles in this category like the new Jeep grand Cherokee L, dodge Durango, kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, toyota highlander, (and some vehicles).
Edit: Most Subaru's are nice (except the new SUBARU WRX (to much plastic and abit outdated) and this Subaru ascent), but at this point for me one of the best looking 3 row vehicle has to be the (unpractable) Mazda CX-9

I traded in my 2010 Murano for the 21 premium Ascent. Murano had one of the best, if not the best, CVT of its time. I don't think a CVT paired with a turbo is a good combo. It's been a year now and I am at 18 mpg. I never had a turbo before so, yeah I punch it a lot. Bottom line: For what I paid (35K) & the features I got, PLUS symmetrical AWD, Ascent wins the best value for the money award hands down. As for the rest, I'll wait to see what Mazda brings to the table with the CX 50 & CX 70.

To be fair to the Ascent vs Murano comparison, the Ascent is both AWD, turbo'd and weighs 700lb more than the Murano did, and it still gets equal or better MPG, and it can tow 5000lbs.
We owned a 2015 pathfinder with a CVT that died at 36k. The new one started dying within a couple thousands miles after replacement. I think the reason Nissan went back to automatic transmission is because their specific CVT's were terrible.
My theory on CVTs is a little different. The gain in fuel economy is so minimal, in fact I think there traditional automatics that still get better fuel economy than CVTs. I think CVTs are about the cost to make them. Follow the money...I think it's a cost savings!

Once again .. You forgot to mention the front passenger seat does not raise!!!! That's HUGE for some people and you talked more about Twinkies when I was waiting to see if they fixed the huge error in engineering. Does it raise or not? Thanks.

@@jagajak That's a big gripe of mine as well. Still not fixed for 2023. Honda Pilot requires the Elite trim to get height adjust. No reviewer ever seems to mention this.
@@plmn93 it's hard to find an honest review. Many are in the pocket so to speak. This is a huge issue that no one talks about but every reviewer worth their salt should mention it. Crazy. That's why I pick and choose my reviewers now. My business is brokering new cars and I need to be sure my clients know all the true cons as well. Hard to find for sure. I'm not sure I care about how many Twinkies can fit in the rear side pocket but id sure love to know if the passenger seat doesn't rise up! Take care.
@@jagajak I find a similar lack of review competency when it comes to GM's long-running refusal to give head restraints to rear seat center passengers. These are family vehicles for crying out loud, that's a huge red flag and it's not even mentioned in safety ratings...by anybody. It's something that's easily overlooked by buyers because most just assume they will be there.

Subaru Ascent is too "Soccer Mom" looking to me...I'll take the Telluride! I won't even bother looking at this Ascent if I see it parked at the grocery store.
The Ascent is a good vehicle here's one thing both brands are good at one thing pop quiz Subaru is safe on the road ... Kia has better warranty, good value but think most will go Telluride!!! No one doesn't won't to hear a droning CVT in their ears. I love all cars and trucks been an automobile lover since a kid the Ascent is a nice car chose Telluride over Ascent think get better deal with Telluride.

I think it's really sad that Subaru created this three row SUV and since that time they have done absolutely nothing with it that is one of the most competitive segments not just in the US but around the world if you can't keep up you get left behind
Subaraus are far better vehicles than Kias in every way....not even a competition

Looked at all these suvs. My problem with the Ascent is that it looks like a bloated legacy. And I never liked the legacy. Dash isn't bad but not great.
So I bought a Telluride. I prefer the interior on the Telli. And size has it beat too.

Weirdly I would take the Tribeca over this. Yes it’s horrible on gas with that 6 cylinder and five speed auto, but there’s something about it that I like more than this.

I would take a Telluride any day over this. That being said, I just put a deposit down on a Palisade Calligraphy because the interior is a notch above what the Telluride offers, even though I prefer the Telluride's exterior.
