Thanks Sean for this video! I was thinking on using split toning more often but never fully understood how to use it! You are the man! Best teacher on the world! I watched nearly every single class of yours in Skillshare and implemented it on my photography and I improved so fast! Thanks for creating these amazing contents! You are the best photographer teacher out there in my opinion! Thanks again for everything! Looking forward to see how your photography is in a few years! Probably insane!
Hey Ivan thanks for all the love man! Makes me super pumped to hear you’ve been enjoying my content, and even more pumped to hear it’s helping you improve! Hope I can continue to produce content that you enjoy 👌🏼❤️
you are the man!! thaaanks a TON man!! thats what i exactly needed to know about split toning aftfer using it for more than 3 months and still not knowing what to do with it... thank youuu!!
I use Canon software mostly and I haven't figured this out (the only time I've used it was in Instagram's built in editor actually), but what I've been doing is going into the colour settings, and adjusting things based on colour. I also do this in GIMP on files that aren't CR3. I did some pics of myself that a friend took with my camera where I was wearing red and pink, and the background was green. I made the pink and red a little less saturated and lighter to show up less neon, and I made the greens darker to add more contrast. I thought it was really cool, and a lot of fun to play with! I also turned the purple colour more toward the blue since my glasses have purple glare, and I wanted it to look a little more neutral with my blue frames and the green of the environment. It worked, you really don't see the glare as much, just by turning the hue a little! But I do want to see if Canon DPP4 has the shadow tone changes, that would be really cool!
In the Thailand photo, as you mentioned, you also added pink to your face which you liked. But what if I wanted to avoid that? How would I isolate just one portion of the frame during the toning process, even though it's a highlight? Is there a mask that does that in LR? Liked the video a lot, it's very useful for a beginner. Cheers.
Here a year later! Little did I know you were going to be editing photos from Vermont (my home state). Super useful insight and tutorial - thanks Sean!
Going to try this out in my next edit! Your explanation was awesome... you've made it sound easy. My issue will probably be understanding when to stop!!
I actually use split toning a lot. Just like you, what works for me most of the time is blue in the shadows and orange in the highlights. I’ve tried to bring in toning in the midtones but that doesn’t seem to work as good. I’ve also played with different color combos for the shadows and highlights but haven’t found anything I love so far.
Mid-tones is great for changing the global temperature of the image, like making the entire image warmer. But yes, the blue shadows and orange highlights is a solid look and I use it in a lot of my images! Appreciate you taking the time to watch my content and leave a comment man!
I've used split toning and yes there's things you can only do with split toning but I don't think it was fair to compare adjusting white balance to split toning. Split toning is adding color to highlights and shadows but it's also adding saturation to those colors. You can't just do that with the white balance tool. What you should have done is compared the color adjustments to split toning (or even comparing it to Camera calibration). That would have been a more fair comparison
This is such a good tutorial, one of the first videos I watched on Lightroom the guy said it’s not something he uses very often, and the curve he creates and S shape in every colour then adjusts by eye. I started off this way and it just did not work for me at all. The split toning is something I use the most to get a really unique look, and for me I don’t find it necessary to adjust all the colors in the curve tone.
just stumbled on this (but since it's now fall...maybe it was fate!) but got yourself a new subscriber! learned alot about color and some lightroom hacks...thanks! peace and love from wild wonderful west virginia!
Hey Sean, have just subbed and thanks for the easy explanation of this, but can I ask has split toning changed in LRC & Camera Raw to Colour grading? can't seem to find the split toning panel? thanks again for the great tutorial.
How did you get a version of lightroom that has split toning, This looks so much better than color grading. I always get meh results with the color grade wheels but the split toning looks so much better!
I think it’s because he’s using the Lightroom classic version! I didn’t find this feature in regular Lightroom as well. But in his video you can see the LrC Logo in the upper left corner
I've watching over 600,38894000999499 videos on split toning and have never understood it.... until now!!! Thanks a lot Sean! :)
Finally, split toning explained like I'm a 4 year old !
haha thanks for watching Maurice!
agreed. the gradient at the beginning was all i needed. great video!
😂😂😂 I knew this was the video to watch when I seen your comment lol
That last trick, being able to move the eye dropper OUTSIDE of LR is crazy! What an amazing feature I did not know about! Thanks for the share Sean.
now I understand how shadows and highlights and color combination works. This will help me to edit my videos as well. Thank you man 😍
Glad it helped!
Oh mahnnn this is what we want
The split toning full description
What it can be used for the best wowwwwwwww♥️🙌🙌🙌🙌
Haha thank you so much man, appreciate the support! 🤙🏼
Loving the fact that I'm not suffering from information overload from learning this !
you're so underrated, watched 4 different videos on split toning and yours made me understand really well.
thank you so much.
Hey Manoj, thank you for that! I am glad you found it helpful!
Would love to see a video on the new split toning controls, it's totally changed. Previous version was way easier to use?
Thank you! I have seen the panel but never used it. I will now! Really appreciate the time you took to explain it.
I've watched so many LR tutorials before and yet I still learn many new tips here. Thanks so much!

I am so satisfied, just half the way through. Thanks Sean for such a fabulous explanation.
Thank you very much Sean for this information. I admit that I haven't used this tool as often as I should. I do appreciate the explanations you give.
Great breakdown. I’ve been using split toning for a couple years and appreciate seeing how you use it and why.
This was so easy to follow, finally something I can understand! And what a cool trick at the end.
Hey May thank you for watching! I’m glad you found it useful :)
I just watched a class of yours on Skillshare and now this popped up on my UA-cam feed 😁
I watched this video last night and edited my fall photos with this in mind and dang they turned out so good
I think I never comment on UA-cam. But you deserve it bro! Your content is gold! Keep it up!
Appreciate that Amir, it's an honor to be your first UA-cam comment! haha, more to come my man 👌

I took your class on skillshare. I’m so glad to find you on here as well
I never knew if people don't use split toning that much until I watched this video. I always add split toning to my photos to get the color I want.
+sean dalton how to do this without messing color of face/skin tones ?thanks subscribed !
Do newest versions of Lightroom show the tool differently? Mine has a "Color Grading" section but not a "Split Toning" section...
Omggg!!! This is sooo cool! Love how simple you explained it! Beginner like me could understand it. Thank youuu!!!!
Any update to this video transposing its content to the new color grading tab replacing split toning ?

@@seandalt you’re welcome! Is there a way I can DM you to ask you some questions about color toning?
Its 2021 and im now just seeing this..... wow great information Sean! liked and subscribed!
Thank you so much for the reminder. I do it in my black and whites and make it a sepia color.
Just wow. Thanks Sean for this video. It's always a good day when you learn something new, something you can use, and this one delivers. Good job.

Hey, This is a very cool video. Can you do one with the new version of LR colorgrading?
Hey Claude actually scripting one now. Planning to cover all aspects of color in LR and how they play off of each other 🙌🏼

Hey Sean, have just subbed and thanks for the easy explanation of this, but can I ask has split toning changed in LRC & Camera Raw to Colour grading? can't seem to find the split toning panel? thanks again for the great tutorial.
Yes it has, you now have more tonal range on account of the addition of "midtones" :)
Could you achieve the same results with HSL?
