I been fly fishing this area since the early 70’s. As you and your family did, we stayed at Ole Bull state park. There are quite a few gems in this area. It’s a little easier to fish now days since we have a camp near Conrad. Good access to the Kettle creek, First Fork and Pine Creek tributaries. I am still amazed of the Brook trout’s survival in drought situations. I have caught few native brookies in the 10”+ range in creeks where you could almost jump across. And saw ones larger in the headwaters during turkey hunting. The best part is the solitude you encounter while fishing these areas other than the occasional deer or bear. Tight lines.
Hi Gordon, yes that area is God’s Country with lots of flowing Holy Water. It is just a majestical area of Pennsylvania. 10+ inch native brookie is a prize in those tiny streams and it is amazing how they survive the summer drought and the winter freeze over. They are so incredibly resilient when they don’t have to deal with pollution. Congrats on your camp. You are fortunate to have it in such a prime location. Solitude can be priceless and so is the wildlife. All the best . 👊
Only took me 3 weeks to finally watch your video, but man, was it worth it. Assume video, and the colors and the size of those natives were amazing for the little trickle that they live in. I'm glad you and your equipment survived the spill. It could have been disastrous. Do me a favor and get some anti-squeek oil for them boots for the next hike, LOL. Can't wait for the next installment of Wild Trout Man.
Thank you David!! You are a dedicated fan. Much appreciated!! 👊👊 Yes, the stream was amazing to have such quality native brook trout. I think many of our unpolluted streams would be this way if more guys practiced catch and release. This stream was quite remote so the stunning brookies were less likely to go home on a stringer. Got lucky with that nosedive… Tight lines, buddy, and maybe Santa will have some anti-squeak wader oil in my stocking this year!! Merry Christmas!! Next video is dropping on Christmas Eve…. Snow Trout - Native Brookies on a Snowstorm 🙂
Another well put together production. I'm sure this trip was well worth the effort after all of those years of waiting. Beautiful environs in search of our state fish. What more could one ask for, especially with the splendor of the fall colors both in the forest as well as the fish. It was incredibly dry in that area of the state, so it was nice to see some water there and knowing that some of those natives survived. I found it interesting to hear you mention Henry Ramsey as he is a local to my area. Take care and God bless.
Thank you for watching and thank you for your articulate comment. It was a dry summer and it was good to get some rain and have flowing water. Native brookies sure have a tough life. Always awesome to see a mature native in its prime. We have to keep these streams cold and clean and pollution free. Henry and I have gone on some wild trout fly fishing adventures. He is a great guy and passionate about wild trout. Gotta love that. He had given me a new wing material that I was trying out on my Super Adams creation. It worked very well. Tight lines!! 🤠👊
Once again a spectacular show and snap shot into who you are! We have talked of this amazing place you wanted to revisit. What a great reliving of your past and thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much, buddy!! Yes, you got to hear the story and now see it. It really was a special place in my mind for such a long time. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the stream at some point. I met 2 hikers when I was on the wrong trail and they were headed to a waterfall further upstream. That needs to be explored and I can dream about the big native brookies swimming in its depths. 🙂
Thanks for sharing (Yeah, easy going in and always a hard hike out after a few hours of fly fishing) I LOVE Pennsylvania Bluelining too in Potter and Clinton Counties. It's fun to hit those Class A Streams and catch the little wild ones. Thanks again for sharing.
Hey David, thanks for watching and commenting. Oh, how I love Potter and Clinton County!! What amazing Class A streams in the mountains of Pennsylvania and the gorgeous native brookies swimming in those picturesque waters. Tight lines and a gentle release. 👊
Much appreciated samunderwood!! Yes, fly fishing for native trout is amazing especially because of the incredible environment where they are found. It is my holy water. Tight lines!! 👊
Hey, I was able to get it viewed earlier than I thought I would. Absolutely amazing. I usually have something witty to say along with my impressed comments. But I feel this time I will curb those thoughts, cause this was obviously an important and emotional day for you as you stated in you story about your dad, brother and cousin fishing as a teen, and being told of this location. 40 years in the making. I can appreciate that. Your first catch had an awesome gold strip on its snout. Don't think I've ever seen that before. See...I'm still behaving. And the big catch was so colorful on its belly, and fins. Outstanding!!! Still being straight. Wonderful surroundings. So colorful, peaceful and tranquil. And....ok, I can't hold it in any longer.......Looks like you had a nice "trip." See you next "fall". Sorry, but like the scorpion said to the frog..."it's my nature " 😂😂😂😂
Well I was Rewatching this since we have snow and high water here in Berks , that was a beautiful brookie from That skinny water....My cabin is about 12 Miles north of Ole Bull...congrats again on a great adventure....
Hi Berks!! That was such an amazing brookie from that stream. I’m sitting by a fireplace right now editing another adventure. It’s from a stream one mountain over from where I caught that brookie. Remote and so gorgeous. Great memories!! Your cabin is in an incredible location. Wow. Anytime you want to invite me to fish that amazing part of the state, I’m in. lol. Stay warm and tight lines!! 👊
Beautiful video. I'm not a fisherman, but seeing your shots of the Pennsylvania wilderness and wildlife remind me of my childhood in Sullivan County. We had the Loyalsock and Lopez Creeks close by and numerous smaller runs throughout the area with Ricketts Glen State Park within 15 miles of home. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Michael!! Yes, that is such a beautiful area of Pennsylvania. I love Worlds End and Ricketts Glen. I know those parks well. I’m glad the video reminded you of your childhood. Happy New Year.
Yes, that one brookie was quite special. Such a healthy male specimen in its prime…. The colors and those fins and thick shoulders. Definitely worth the effort to get there. Thanks for watching. 👊
Excellent video! I illustrate Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl for the USDA Forest Service. Your video has sparked several ideas for future illustration locations as well as a deep jealousy for that brook trout! Great work.
Buddy, what weight rod were you fishing?? I love the story!!!! Incredible story and journey!! Love the part about you thinking about you dad, hope my kids say the same!! Potter is sole cleansing for me know it well!! I’m fired in the wool brookie guy. Great Turkey tail on the long steep trail .. They were some studs you caught!!! Glad it’s not class A better kept a secret. You had the opposite reaction with your rig in low clear water, I was spooking the fish with the splash of the dropper took two days for me to stubbornly admit to that then it was the dry for the win. You just never know?? Can you share that super Adams pattern you speak of? Again just a great story. I had a similar one it was a 20 year quest, finally got to the stream it was in great shape back packed in spent the night, it rained got up it looked like Willy woonkas chocolate factory!!! Haven’t been back since, it’s a 4 hour drive in WV. 6 miles to back pack in, maybe this spring. I have had 10 back surgeries so I’m not jumping up and down to do it but it’s in my mind, it has all three species though!!! Killer water..
Scott, Thank you for watching and I enjoyed reading your comment. It’s great that Class A streams get added protection with that designation but it also puts those streams on everyone’s radar. This one fell through the cracks and sometimes that might be a good thing. It’s a treasure. Cool story about your WV stream. That’s a gem with all 3 wild species. Very cool. Super Adams recipe: hook size 14 but can be 12 or 16 also tail - up dn trout material body - grayish brown antron hackle - grizzly and brown wing - white olefin yarn or up dn trout material It’s a beefed up Adams dry fly made to float exceptionally well. The up dn trout tail material floats incredibly well. I do use that material for the wing too because of how well it floats but it only comes in the color gray so this time I used white olefin yarn for the wing because it’s easier to see in a fast tumbling brookie stream. It’s a killer fly that floats high and can support a tungsten bead dropper. That’s an absolutely winning combination and you’ll see with my videos that it’s a combo I use quite frequently with very good success. I do need to make a fly tying video of this creation. Tight lines and nice to meet you!! 👊
@@WildTroutMan thanks for the recipe but can you tell me what the up material is sorry not sure? And I can’t believe you can’t get away with a tungsten bead? The splash alone was spooking the fish and it gets hung up for me big time and that’s with a 2mm bead!! Just today I bought some brass beads just dry droppers. I usually run my version of a CDC caddis as my dry in a few colors floats like a bobber!! Thanks again!!
@@scottnock5241 up dn trout wing material is a synthetic pair of wings preshaped in a V pattern. It floats extremely well. You can also cut it in half for the tail/shuck and have tail material for 2 flies. I wish it came in other colors besides gray. Gray works fabulous and looks very buggy, but white would be awesome and make the fly easier to see in faster water. I tried bleaching the gray material but it didn’t work. Here is a link. www.skyblueoutfitters.com/updntrout-wing-material/
@@WildTroutMan thank you for your detailed responses it’s much appreciated I don’t see much of that in the YT world. I looked at that material and it looks like material I have on flys I have had given to me years ago that’s stout. Does not look like typical parapost material, I will give it a go!! Thanks for the lead. If you ever want to do a vid on that multi species stream lmk ?? She’s a beauty, tough fishing, but man it’s worth it she used to have 28-30 browns.. But unethical locals put an end to that and just like every other stream in the past 15-20 years the water levels have been worse so you have to hit it right.
Hey Scott, yes I’d be interested in hiking to the multi species WV stream. Sounds like an awesome adventure… and with wild trout. That is my specialty!! When are you thinking of going?
Hey Rip!! My favorite fly rod for flipping a dry/dropper rig with a tungsten bead on the dropper is an 8 1/2 foot 4 wt rod. Straight dry fly is fun on a 3 wt rod. Thanks for watching!! Tight lines and a gentle release. 👊
I used an 8 1/2 ft 4 wt rod. It works very well for flipping a dry/dropper rig with a tungsten bead on the dropper. Many times on a small stream you can’t false cast and you’ll need to flip cast because of trees all around. A smaller lighter rod doesn’t allow me to have a pinpoint accurate cast with a tungsten dropper because of the weight of the dropper. It’s critical to have a perfect first cast with wary native trout. 7 ft 3 wt is very fun and works great if you are going to exclusively fish dry flies and not add the dropper on a tiny stream.
Brookies live a tough life. None of these native streams have a neutral pH. Many are in the 5.5 range. That must be optimum for rhododendron growth and certainly hemlock. Not optimum for native brookies but it’s the one trout that can tolerate and maybe even thrive, to some degree, in that acidic water. Interesting comment, Clete.
