Is it me, or have we been getting "January Movies" in March for the past 5 years? Lol. Shit, SPLIT was released in January in 2017 but then CHIPS came out that same year in March
For me it was when the neighbor played by an actress that can’t act to save her life, decided to have a weird ass excited freakout moment in Chauncey’s world.
15:29 THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. You are so real Cody!!! Thank you for always giving us insightful, raw, and authentic reviews. I've basically stopped watching out film reviewers and exclusively watch you because of how diligently you cover different projects. Cheers!
Not a surprise it sucks. 9 times out of 10 Blumhouse makes is trash. They should be renamed to Outhouse for all the crap they produce. The director made 2 of the worst Blumhouse horror movies "Truth Or Dare" and "Fantasy Island'.
Blumhouse has had so many misfires lately. It makes me nervous they want to acquire more horror licenses because they haven’t proven that they are capable of handling them properly
I had the same Hellraiser II thoughts during the movie, and I have to say that sequence was the best part for me. I took two of my kids and they had a good time, which makes me happy.
This was basically Night Swim deja vu. The first half is fine and you can forgive some issues, but it completely nosedives in the second half. The script felt like a first draft that was never touched up. The exposition and over-explaining was ridiculous. It’s clearly a movie geared for teens but also believes the audience is stupid every single scene and has to explain everything you literally just witnessed. Blumhouse at this point clearly doesn’t believe in “show don’t tell”. Blumhouse feels like the MCU right now. They used to be firing on all cylinders, but now they stumble on basically every project. They need some serious quality control.
Remember when you wrote down your idea in your journal about making an imaginary friend horror movie, change that to good imaginary friend horror movie
Just came back from watching this in theater and eh. I feel like it is a horror movie for children and was poorly advertised. Going in blind I expected a horror comedy but aside from a slight chuckle here or there, this isn’t a horror or a comedy. More of a supernatural drama about a blended family that attempts to hit the same beats as Pan’s Labyrinth, Coraline, Insidious and Ted, but never quite hits the mark. The acting was very confusing. There are parts where too much backstory is given and then points where not enough is given. My favorite part was the bits of familial ties between the step mother and her father. The stepmother’s father had all of 7 lines but his performance was the only one that felt authentic to me due to the set up of the film. IMDB gave the movie a 4.8 and for once I agree. Imo it’s somewhere between a movie released in theater and something on Tubi, so very middle of the road if you know you are going to see a popcorn flick geared towards children.
in 2018 for one of my writing classes I wrote a prompt very similar to this one, with a few big differences (mine had the teddy bear be sentient and not possessed by an entity, things like that) and it was crazy seeing this trailer and concept finally happen. Unfortunately the movie doesn’t seem very good
They're such an odd production house tbh...seeing their name on the screen doesn't guarantee anything...it sways all the way from excellent to basically unwatchable...very topsy-turvy.
I genuinely believe that modern films like imaginary are using Chat GPT and other AI to write scripts. I am in marketing and the past six months my marketing manager has done nothing but push chat GTP on all social media posts, our blogs, website design, everything. They are throwing it at us nonstop and it sounds so robotic and foreign. This has to be what they’re doing with film.
After seeing the trailer 1 I already saw the whole movie basically because ya know blumhouse trailers. 2 The very premise was lackluster and kinda boring😅 At least it wasn’t a let down when I had no expectations going in.
I really didn’t think it was that bad. It wasn’t great by any means but I enjoyed it. The first two acts was pretty rough go get through cause it was slow. But I really liked the child actor’s performance and I liked there was a lot of creepy unnerving entity in the back of the room scares. I also think the jump scares were pretty good. I’d give it a 6/10
Cody, I’m just throwing it out there now that you made my day by referencing “Don’t look under the bed”.. I’d definitely watch some old DCOM reviews from you😂😂🔥🔥🤙
...ok when was the last time you watched Don't look under the bed? Because I challenge you, as an adult, to try to sit through that garbage film now. We all loved it as kids but as someone who rewatched all the spooky dcoms last halloween? It's trash pure trash and we definitely were idiot children amazed at the twist. Mark my words, heed my warning. Don't look under the bed is pure torture to sit through. Halloweentown is average at best. Phantom of the megaplex holds up and was actually fun. And same goes for Mom's got a date with a Vampire.
While I think a review would do quite well on the channel, I do respect Cody for sticking to his guns in not giving money to people who have unfairly insulted and disrespected him for months.
Great review bro... I'm also mixed on Wadlow but it's not that I do not like his work, I have seen everything he's done. I just can't quite put my finger on what works for me or what's missing. He clearly has a bright eye for telling stories in his way. Never Back Down is an all time teenager classic but for me it's Cry-Wolf that I always go back to. There is something in that movie that feels like it was a few drafts away from truly being great.
You never fail to crack me up. Love your reviews and I agree so much with how out of hand Blumhouse has became. It’s a shame bc I do still have a love for them when they put out good horror movies.
Honestly, I was kinda sympathizing with the creature. It just wanted a friend who it could feed off their creativity. It even offered them a nirvana like existence where her imagination could come true if they just agreed to stay with it and share their imagination. It really wasn't threatening to do anything bad to them if they would just hang out with it.
I disagree with old lad bit bro 6:27 immediate red flags when she said she was obsessed, easy way of corruption to creep in and she did what i assumed she would do, Edit: you got new subscriber i like how you feel about the film, look forward for your other reviews
I think the line was “it hurt you more to say it” which was one of the few lines of dialogue I liked because it reminded me of the actual work of being a parent which is to be brutally honest when their children mess up. Despite appreciating this bit of character development, I didn’t much care for the story or the lore. It felt like the writers were just making stuff up as they went along. The husband becoming a non entity later on is never explained. All in all pretty forgettable. There are some comedic moments mostly having to do with poor effects but overall boring.
This feels like a movie that was supposed to come out next January but blumhouse looked at the schedule and saw no horror to open the month of March and moved it to pick up some more box office.
Hey, Cody! 😂😂😂😂 Starting with good jokes already! I hit the like button as per usual. I’m gonna be quiet and listen, now. Thanks in advance, you’re appreciated!
Why the hell does Jeff Wadlow keep getting work?? Dude Seriously screwed the pooch a decade ago with KICK ASS 2! And just about everything he’s done ever since has been a trainwreck (Truth or Dare and the HIDEOUS Fantasy Island!)
I like your review, but not every movie needs a sequal or a franchise. This one does not need that. At the end, we can already imagine how a next one goes..
IMO the movie should have just been about a living teddy bear running around. Aside from Krampus and Demonic Toys and other similar movies where there's an evil teddy in it, we've never had a movie where the whole focus and main villain is a teddy bear running around.
I was just watching never back down a couple days ago and it randomly came to my mind that you would probably hate that movie 😂 but you said you actually enjoy it which I’m glad since I love that movie. Would you ever review it?
An evil teddy bear? That has wait for streaming all over it. Shoot, probably wait for it to hit something that I'm subscribed to, so I won't feel too bad wandering off to go play video games on my computer while just listening to the rest. 😉 Anyways, enjoyed this, thank you, Cody.
I really enjoyed the first and second act of this movie because I felt it was really fun and self aware of how dumb it was. There was some humour that I enjoyed and I loved the practical effects and the visuals the movie had to offer. But my god the old lady was terrible and the 3rd act was SO BAD. The dialogue was also absolutely atrocious. I was overall really disappointed in this movie, mostly because of the horrible ending.

I actually liked this movie, and i feel like it's getting overhated, Respect peoples opinions, but the twist wasn't noticeable, and i thought at first the old lady was the spirit because, well, for one, she locked the main characters in this imaginary type ish room filled with doors that withhold memories from other children and the main characters memories, but its everything they wanted but not in the right way, i liked that, plus i liked what they did with the ending, They did the smile route where you think that this spirit was defeated, but instead it tricks you
Plus the main child did such an amazing job, people give children actors shit for there performance but for a very young age actor she did an amazing job, and i still agree that children can be very creepy.
I thought it was okay it was pretty good in my opinion but did you catch the shuttle reference to a Nightmare on Elm Street there are tons of Easter eggs
It’s sad that this movie started off really good actually. It had SO MUCH potential that the writers decided to go “Hmm, don’t need that.” Once we met the old neighbor that was played by an actress that makes The Last Airbender look Grammy Nomination worthy, I was done. Then when she had that childlike moment in the Chauncey world, I almost threw up in my mouth. It’s like they couldn’t decide if they wanted to be scary, or satirical. So they went in the middle and it just didn’t work. The little girl was the best part of the movie, it always amazes me when the child actor stands out and is 10,000x better than any of the adult actors. They even had JESUS from TWD, they gave him like 2 scenes. Missed opportunity there too.
Cody you ever see the slasher from 2005 venom? I watched it the other night, was expecting it to be complete garbage but was pleasantly surprised, not the best but has that early 2000s teen horror feel, the villain was kind of like a mix between the swamp thing and Jason
Your Segway into the sponsor made me laugh. Thanks for the review. Btw you were totally right with Judgement Night. Checked it out on your recommendation and wish I had seen it sooner.
I saw it and I didn’t think it was that bad. I was kinda interested and wanted the lore behind everything. I would say it wasn’t as scary as it should be.
Well, no. My late father may have been married thrice, but my late mother was his last wife. Our older half-siblings never lived with us. I didn't even know that I was only my mother's oldest child, but was my father's middle child, until I was about 30. That was mom's doing, so I don't think she was a good stepmother.
The thing is I thought the first half of the movie pretty decent, not the best but entertaining at the least. Then the final act kicked in and everything got silly, the setting, the acting, the plot. Movie took a real turn for the worst in the final act when it was doing good at keeping my attention for the first bit
This is honestly the first time my brain mentally walked out. I didn't walk out physically. I'll give the movie's production this, it gave me Nightmare on Elm Street and Beetlejuice vibes.
I more often than not love Blumhouse, but it's the first after a while where I've walked out post film not completely sold on the film. Like Cody said the concept was good but it's not had the punch of previous works
I probably could come up with a better "imaginary friend horror movie" than this. The outcast kid uses her imaginary friend (that happens to be a T. rex) to enact revenge on her bullies. No, I'm not just projecting XD
YES THE SCRIPT AND DIALOGUE IS SO ANNOYING ! like the part u said about real pain then when we watched her dad sacrifice his sanity and she’s like “… he sacrificed himself for me 😢” like girl yes we literally all just saw that oh i hate that
I didn’t “grow up” watching horror like you did Cody so when I saw Don’t Look Under The Bed it scared the pants off me (I’m a day old than you for reference)
Hey Cody! I have a question for you man are you a reader at all? I think I have this really good book/movie idea that I’d love to share with you somehow and see what your thoughts are and if you think it’d make a good movie or not! Your opinion has always been one that matters to me fs
Nightswim was way better.... Lol I thought you were too harsh on it,.... The 2nd half of this movie was way worse. And yes you're correct, it did remind me of Hellraiser pt2 🎬🤘

I watched it today and thought it could've been so much better. At the very least, don't show the "friend" made it seem better
You’d think Blumhouse could take a page out of the film's title and use their imaginations to make something more interesting.

Love the use of Tenacious D’s rendition of Baby hit me one more time it makes the intro funnier
The entire theatre was laughing when i saw it. Which is new since usually I'm the only one who laughs at horror movies
I will say the fire department in this town deserves a raise because they are amazing
Thank you for the review
YES THE SCRIPT AND DIALOGUE IS SO ANNOYING ! like the part u said about real pain then when we watched her dad sacrifice his sanity and she’s like “… he sacrificed himself for me 😢” like girl yes we literally all just saw that oh i hate that
biggest pet peeve in so many movies today tbh like this isn’t disney channel pls just go write a book if u have such the urge to narrate
I didn’t “grow up” watching horror like you did Cody so when I saw Don’t Look Under The Bed it scared the pants off me (I’m a day old than you for reference)
Would a Calvin & Job es horror movie work?
What the heck is going on with Blumhoue lately? Also. where did you get that badass Jason T shirt? I need it!!!!!
Hey Cody! I have a question for you man are you a reader at all? I think I have this really good book/movie idea that I’d love to share with you somehow and see what your thoughts are and if you think it’d make a good movie or not! Your opinion has always been one that matters to me fs
But if not that’s cool I understand you’re a busy man fr love your videos dude
Nightswim was way better.... Lol I thought you were too harsh on it,.... The 2nd half of this movie was way worse. And yes you're correct, it did remind me of Hellraiser pt2 🎬🤘
I really liked this movie, I thought the suspense /horror was done perfectly. But I also hated Megan, I thought it was just boring and dumb. 🤷♂️
My theater was packed with kids. It was a five nights at Freddy’s crowd.
I think everyone (with an exception of Cody) can say that Skinamarink was a far better example of the horror of a child’s imagination than Imaginary
Hell yeah Kimberly the pink ranger was my favourite too. 😂
@danielpatterson5189-Oh, yeah, probably THE crush for boys who grew up in the 90s
