My First Time Camping with the Jimny

- Jana, our Social Media Coordinator, takes the Jimny for its first spin on a dirt road! 💁♀️ It's also their first time going camping with the Jimny. They piled everything in the back and went back to basics with the setup.
It’s only fair to start from the bottom with this build and figure out what works and what doesn’t. Jana has been having it way too easy getting out with all of the already-kitted Alu-Cab fleet vehicles 😆

Being a countryside truck driver, many dirt tracks and rough lanes. On one journey, I came across a woman in a white Jimny, who quickly lost control (she was driving at quite some speed) and ended up in a hedge, at a 45 degree angle. Facing up towards the sky. In fact, the same day, she managed to do this twice. Anyway. Moral of that story. The vehicle is a little tank. She wasn't hurt, vehicle, no issues or damage. After seeing that. I was amazed with how wonderful these little 4x4s are. So safe travels and have fun. You have a wonderful machine there and I'm sure you're going to love your new wheels 🤙🏻
Thank you for the comment! We will be safe on the road 😉
Cant wait to see an Alucab build on the jimny.
Major Jimny accessories in this order:
1) A GPS (or tablet) equipped with the Tracks4Africa maps.
2) Radial cup protectors.
3) Rock sliders.
4) 215, 75 R15 All-terrain tyres since your factory service warranty may come under dispute when deviating more than 3% from the factory default. Since other brands become difficult to source, you will effectively choose between General Grabbers or BF Goodrich at almost twice the price of the Grabbers.
5) Lift kit with better suspension. Some would place this first on the list, but by first saving up for it you will be buying a more capable unit at this stage, especially if you plan to do any overlanding.
6) Differential breather kit.
7) Snorkel
8) Recovery points front and rear with bow shackles and a capable recovery kit including a spade including an upgraded jack either the Gortech scissors jack or a high-lift kit (dangerous in unskilled hands.)
9) Roof rack.
10) On-board fridge around 40 litres - either the Engel or Snomaster units.
Weight is your nemesis in the Jimny. Aftermarket 80 litre fuel tanks means that at least half the time you will carry the weight of up to 40 litres of extra fuel even when you only need that fuel in exceptional circumstances. My decision has been to carry an extra jerry can for when fuel becomes an issue and to plan my trips with attention to detail. You cannot carry much on the roof-rack and a roof-top tent is all but out of the question - this is a highly contentious statement, but I will stick to it.
I do carry a large 20kg tent on the roof plus a 12kg side awning plus an 11.5 kilogram sleeping stretcher that together with the 8Kg the roof rack itself weighs, is 51.5 kg and not far from being 50% overweight. This means tarred roads at low speed, no crosswinds and gravel roads at very low speeds up to a base camp and from there I have unrestricted day trips without the load on the roof until the return journey. Yes, this puts me out of the overlanding scene unless I am prepared to sleep on the ground in a small tent although on the flip side, in a large tent I almost have the scale and convenience of a caravan.
The problem with add-ons and upgrades is that they cost a lot of money and deliver diminishing returns beyond the first five or six items on the above list.
Thanks for this detailed comment, Casper! Appreciate the time, and looking at your list, it is good to see that I'm on the right track with my build-plan. It will definitely become a bit of a balancing act with distributing the weight of all the necessities and add-ons, but I am looking forward to the challenge.
Yay! There’s so few jimny girls on UA-cam! Glad to see you on here 😊
What a lovely video! One of the best! Thanks for sharing.
Love that camping spot and general ambience of the outing.
Best part was the wolfhond 🐺swimming around waiting for you to get in the water! 😀
Thank you, David! Appreciate the kind words! 😄🐺
Can’t wait to see it being kitted
It’s going to be a vibe!
I love the Jimny. I'm on the process of buying one and that's why I came to this video. But...the Fit For an Autopsy t-shirt convinced me to subscribe.
Great time
Live , laugh, love repeat. Thanks for the translations lovely language. Look forward to additions to your vehicle as of yet we won’t be getting them here in the States to bad.
Thanks, John! 😊
Your weekend away looked amazing. Where did you say we could get the meal boxes please. Thank you for sharing with us 😊
Hi there! The meal kits are from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants
it‘s realy the best way to start like you, because everyone has another desire for camping. Now you can look, which shadow awn or RTT ist the best for your setup. I build my defender two times because after the first setup i noticed more experience. Now wie have the 270 shadow awn and a Gen. 3.1 RTT and we can sleep in the car.
Ja I got one of them and it does tend to drift around badly on corrugated gravel roads... but I wouldn’t trade it for anthing😁👍🏾
Another awesome video. When folding down the back seats remove the headrests. The seats fold down flat then.
Yes, good tip! We've done that.
Real cool to see youre journey with the jimny :) such a cool car
• BFG all terrain
tires.
• Tough Dog
suspension.
• Long Ranger
80L fuel tank.
• Frontrunner
roof-rack.
Go and conquer the world! 🌍🙌🏻
Nice one !!
bacana demais, parabéns. o carro é incrível e teus vídeos também.
Beautiful 😍 couple & nice 👍 video...
Yeah. I wasn’t too concerned about the rear door either. I’d like to add a fold down table to the door so at that stage I might want to have it extend further. I’d love a rooftop tent for the Jimny, but I’m not 100% sure a Jimny is the right car for rooftop tents. The car is really small inside so I’d like to optimise roof space for cargo/gear so that I can use the back seats if I need to. That will mean camping in a small ground tent. True, the car does jump around on the gravel with high psi in the stock tyres.
What would be the best tyres that could fit the standard rims and not require a lift?
Well keep a close eye on Alu-Cab's socials or subscribe to our newsletter as we are going to release a whole lot of cool accessories for the Jimny during the course of the year that you might like (and your opinion about the rooftop tent might change too 😉). In terms of tyres, have a look at the General Tire General Grabbers AT3's 215/75/15. They are a good size, better for fuel economy, and will put less strain on the engine and gearing.
@@alu_cab awesome. I’ll keep an eye out for all the accessories. The Jimny market is a big one and it’s about to get bigger with the 5 door. Sure Alu Cab will do well.
Hi awesome video. Im going to purchase a Jimny this year. If like to know your thoughts on Auto and also the fuel consumption.
I'll b mostly doing urban driving and the odd gravel road.. thanks
Hi Moegamat, thanks for reaching out! The auto Jimny has been awesome so far and I am not regretting it for one second. You will love it, especially for the type of driving you plan on doing. I've been quite impressed with the fuel consumption. Obviously, the tank doesn't last too long because it only takes 40L but I've been getting an average of 13km per litre, but that will probably change as I start adding more weight to the Jimny as I kit it out. Thanks for watching the video! Cheers, Jana :)
I bet, Alu Cab is cooking something for the Jimny🤔
I know I'm not wrong🤣🤣
You know it 😉
Could have left it in 2wd by the looks of it. Drop your tyre pressures to 16psi for gravel and it'll feel way better
Ok now AluCab let’s hope we stick with this build. Still waiting on all the exciting Troopy inventions that where to come last year 😢. #justsaying😢
More Troopy products will be coming in due time. Things change! 😄 Hope you enjoy this build.
How much you paid for your vehicle
What's the name of the campsite?
Suikerbossie Guest Farm in the Cederberg :)
@@alu_cab thank you
always prefer simple and cost effective set up rather than those huge bulky and costly setup.
11:10 which lang?
Afrikaans :)
Ek het my dood gelag toe die hond onder rond swem, asof hy jou aanmoedig om te soring 😆
Shiva soek net ‘n swem maatjie 😆
That is cheating, you didn't bring the mattress inside the Jimny
😂 gotta think smart! Hopefully next time Jana will strap a mattress to the roof.
@@alu_cab 🤣🤣
Simon, hou op Afrikaans praat boet, die ander mense wat kyk kan jou nie verstaan nie.... :)
I asked you before what this has to do with Alu-cab.
Must say I still don’t get it.
If you don’t get what it has to do with Alu-Cab now, you probably won’t get this series. It’s pretty clear that this is the start of an Alu-Cab Jimny-build, and in time all will be revealed 😅
I heard a lot of kids in my school math's class say the same thing......"I need a calculator..."
