I love straightforward DIY projects that save a ton of money and can be reused for years to come. Best of all, you didn't call it a "life hack." Thank you for sharing!
I have seen a lot of videos of cheap diy targets but material still cost around 100€. This is the TRUE cheap diy target. Thank you!
Bonus Tip: Get used Pallet Wrap, which most places will just throw away. Those large big box stores like Home Depot (Bunnings in Oz), particularly where they might sell large bags of potting mix off a pallet. Those pallets have to be wrapped well due to unstable bags (unlike boxes that might have a light wrap), so if you enquire what day they get most of their deliveries they can put some aside for you. The benefit here is that it is the one type of plastic, so is consistent and is free.
I was about to waste a stupid amount of money here in Norway to get a decent target because my first attempt of making a DIY one was a disaster (I used small branches from bushes in my garden to fill it). I never thought of using plastic and it seems perfect for the wet weather and wet grass I use to have around! Thank you!!!
You are very welcome 😊
Love it!! Funny this starts off to be all British and ends up in “Hagebaumarkt” greetings from Hessen :)
The best place I have found to get a ton of plastic is from Mattress warehouses. All the new mattresses are wrapped in it and they literally just throw it all away. I was quick and just dumpster dived but I’m sure they would have given it away if I asked.
We used to stuff onion bags or burlap sacks with grocery bags. It worked surprisingly well to stop arrows, especially if it was suspended. The lightweight targets would stop the arrows, even if you missed the thickest center part, by rolling with the shots.
Brilliant mate. Thanks and greetings from South Africa.
I've seen several DIY target ideas and I have to say this is the best one! Thank you and I look forward to future DIY vids.
Those few penetration holes on the back side are actually a nice feature. They would help facilitate the packing to drain and dry out a bit quicker after a rainstorm. I would consider drilling some holes right from the start, just for that reason.
Without using any wood or woodworking tools, I like this build very much!
You have restarted my archery feelings. All I have to do is re-Fletch the arrows and exercise the bow and find a suitable container. Thanks so much.
You are very welcome 😇 Have fun and shoot straight!
From one cheep bastard to the next..this is brilliant!! I'm doing it right away!!
Great ideal plus on the cheap for those that don't want to drop a lot of cash. Seen a lot of DIY on targets for Archery and most get into a lot of work or required power tools. Not to mention a long list of materials to buy that can really increase the cost to manufactured models seen in stores or in online shops.
I think a few who have posted below have missed the point. Clearly this is just a ideal where one can modify to fit his or her needs. Anyways, great ideal @Robin Hood Archery!
Nice idea, I made my target out of an old suitcase filled with expanding foam and wrapped the whole thing in parcel tape, works a treat.
Been using mine for a few months now, works amazing! 🏹 I've put the target inside the house after im done shooting, so it should last forever. Sometimes theres little pieces of plastic on the arrowhead, but this depends on the filling used and how messes up it gets after hundreds of shots, might have to change it at some point, but that's easy.
Brilliant idea. I sent this video to everyone at my club and a couple of people have made one already. I'll be making mine very soon.
Great idea.
Brilliant! I've been stockpiling plastic bags, bubble wrap, plastic packaging, etc, and some cardboard boxes, but this seems like it would be simpler and have better longevity. I might try it with a large rectangular Rubbermaid container. When not in use, I could probably squeeze the lid on and set it upright to keep it dry.
Excellent. Just in the process of building a home range and these targets will be ideal. My local archery store wanted 147 Euros for a target!
That is the absolute best diy bow target you can build. I built a few of them in wooden boxes to be shot from both sides. Its cheap and super effective. I built one which is 20cm in depth and it stopped a 210lbs compound crossbow bolt.
A Ethafoam target which ca do that will cost you a fortune.
Im amazed ! Thank you for this great great idea !
Awesome feedback! Thank you very much for your kind words :)
That's brilliant Kev! Thank you.
The only downside is that it makes me feel like a fool.
I spent 1200 kronor on a target this year.
That's about 120 euro I think,
I'm going to save a lot of money in the future thanks to this video.
I've been trying all sorts of things to do my own target, and I must admit that I just got tired of it, so I bought one instead.
This one looks like an easy way to do for myself.
So again, thank you Kev!
Greetings from Sweden
Great video! I was wondering how to go about building my first target that wouldn't ruin my arrows.
As soon as you said pallet wrapping, well, I work in a factory where we throw that stuff away, so I knew I could get all that I needed for free.
Plus I used the wood pallet to build a box frame 700mm × 700mm × 200mm.
For the front and back faces I also used a huge bulk bag from work that we also throw away. It's made of the same fibrous plastic material as tarps.
I put it all together the same as yours, and it stops arrows perfectly.
I was worried about pass throughs and ruining my fletchings, but the arrows stop about 3 inches in.
That's using a 40lb recurve at 15 to 20 meters.
I have the bonus of having dual face, now that I know the arrows don't pass through. So when one face is worn out, I'll just spin it around and use the other side.
Top target!!
Great vid, if you go to large garden centre/ nursery, ask them for 90ltr large plant pot, you can normally pick one up for free.
Looks like a big cupcake. Great video
😂
Another guy used corn bags. I commented that I'm in NYC, not man corn bags here... but cement/sand bags - plenty! Awesome tips man! Nice touch with the harp music too!
I've made a similar target, mine is an oblong frame made of scrap 12mm ply roughly 90cm x 60cm x 30cm with chicken wire stapled to the front and back faces and stuffed with pallet plastic before stapling squares of builder bag over the wire. Lasts for ages and enough to easily stop a 40lb recurve/ 125lb crossbow. The last one was made with scrap from the work skip and cost nothing but time!
I can attest that this works perfectly. I covered mine in rubber backed astro turf , rubber side out. Best target I've ever used.
What’s the filling material? Plastic grocery sacs?
@@jspacone yep
@@redcolt777 Great! Now I finally have a use for the 5,000 sacs I’ve been saving.
I love this guy. He makes me smile. Great info!
Too kind sir, too kind! ☺️☺️☺️
Made mine yesterday! Worked perfectly!
So far I have only seen them made with wooden boxes. This is a genius idea.
thank you very much, I've been looking for a good way to make an easy and durable target. This will do the trick
Yea, I use your second option, that is, hessian/jute/burlap sack filled with plastic. Works really well. I do have a similar sack filled with rags. Also works but is heavy even when dry. Best to place both types of targets inside when not used. Flaxen Saxon.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I made one and it works great! Cheers from Utah, USA
Great useful tip. Going to save me a few bucks. Thank you. Happy Holidays,
Fantastic idea, I think I shall make one and mount it on a stand. I can't believe that I have only just found your great content....Bloody UA-cam keeps recommending me content like for example..."how to dye your hamster pink", "how to build a nuclear reactor at home using shoe boxes" or some droid forcing a pound of sausages up his nose....anything bar what I am bloody interested in lol.
Danke für diesen wunderbar günstigen Tipp...hab sogar alles dafür zuhause rumliegen. ❤🎯
Great one, I did the same thing by cutting the one side of a car tire and filling it up with plastic, and then wrapping it up with plastic material like the big gravel bag you had... but it gets shot out very quickly... Very nice and easily portable target, for when I go on a summer vacation...
Thanks for that, plain and simple 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for sharing your great target idea!
I made one like this in october 2018 and it saved me a lot of money.
It works very well for my 30 lbs bow and the target is still in use - only had to replace parts of the surface a few times.
I was quite surprised how fast the material catches the arrows. They only go in a few centimeters.
Very easy and cheap to build and maintain. Perfect :)
I've been using shade cloth tied with cable ties and full of fertilizer bags ( with the stitching and double layers cut off, that is important or you'll have masses of trouble getting your arrows out)
Good idea thanks for showing us, getting the bucket from the builders yard ,you will likely get all the plastic packing as well. as theres normally reams of the stuff been packed into bins ,they would give you it gladly , Greetings from Wales .
Fantastic idea, I'm setting up a walk thru range in my woods on a beer budget. problem solved
Last target uses a buckets for your drinks
I have used an £8 square bag of compressed rags for about 8 months. Just needs taping up when the bag starts to tear. Stops 240fps bolts with average 50mm depth of penetration. Is also fully waterproof.
Going to do one today, thank you for sharing!
This will work great in the Philippines since it is so humid and rainy here! Thank you for the free but great share and idea Sir!
Yep, made these for years with plastic shopping bags. Have made a PVC frame/box 3’ x 3’ x 1.5’ with legs out of hardware store PVC plumbing parts covered with burlap and stuffed with bags. The only issue is if you shoot tight groups. Each arrow compresses the material and each successive arrow goes a little deeper until they start to punch holes out thru the back. They work well But even with plastic you want to put a rain cover/roof over them as they will collect water and get heavy and nasty...
Absolutely brilliant mate !! Very helpful quick and easy
Tipp: if you use old clothes, cut off/out all plastic and metal pieces! Great video, kev!
I like this target idea better than having to build a box but I'll have to see if I can find a tub like that here in the U.S...probably. I'll have to admit, I had to go look up what "Hessian" is. I thought a Hessian was someone from the German State of Hesse, silly me. Of note, it is boat launching season here in the area surrounding the Chesapeake Bay where we live and that means lots of used plastic shrink wrap. People winterize their boats here using shrink wrap coverings, terrible from a plastics in the landfill point of view but I think it will work great to stuff a target. Thank you for the video and idea!
Great video & idea - I would also think any old worn tarp, (blue Wal-Mart type) would also work well.... Now all I have to do is build a bow like Kramer Ammons....
I made a similar target with collected styrofoam cups but your idea inspired me to use a 50 lb. Dog food bag for a skin. Cut in half it is a about 30 inches x 30 inches.
The large bags are Similar to the blue IKEA bags - a woven blue plastic material. It works great because I made 3 Orc targets out of these bags with pvc pipe spines when my kids were little. My kids loved shooting them but eventually I ended up hitting the "spine" with a bigger bow and "paralyzing" the bugger.
What a great idea!! Thanks man. Gonna do this Saturday. North east Colorado
The funny thing is I just got a bow for hunting, and I'm also finishing up painting and restorating a classic car. I have hundreds of feet of that plastic form the painting process.
Here is an idea for you to try instead of the cd. Some businesses get goods shipped on pallets where a thin cardboard is used between the goods and the pallet. How about using the cardboard as a stencil to paint the concentirc circles on the material you use for a target. Or even as a replaceable target in itself that can be pinned to the base target you are using and talked about in the video.
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this: Simple, cheap, easy to build and durable target 👍 You get a thumbs up from Denmark
Great! I’ll definitely build one. Looking forward to more DIYs
Very good Sir, great idea and I really enjoyed it. I'm going to try it. Have a great day
I use old carpet cut into 1meter long, 15 cm wide, tightly stacked in a frame. Add more layers if you are using powerful bows. The arrows will stick between the layers of carpet, and since it is only the friction between the layers stopping your arrow, the target lasts forever, and the arrows come out easily.
Good idea...for x bows....all free materials every trash day
@@kidringo1257 One thing though, on the rare occasion that your arrow sticks in between the thin hard backbone of the carpet, it can get stuck, so take some pliers with you.
That's a long and narrow target ?
@@matoko123 Sorry, I meant, "old carpet cut into 1meter long, 15 cm wide strips, tightly stacked in a frame."
The target is 1 meter tall, one meter wide, and 15 cm thick.
It is important to make sure the layers are stacked tightly. The idea is that the arrows go between the layers of carpet and are stopped by friction, while not actually damaging any fibers.
@@himanshuwilhelm5534 Oh, thank you, I understand now, that sounds good :)
Great idea Kev. Thank you for putting this on here.
I like using different parts of my targets as it helps make them last longer and can be fun. I use stick on smilies I get from the pound shop. You get two sizes and six colours. I put six of each colour on the target scattered around and try to get all of one colour, two into one then two singles then back to first. This is not only fun it also helps with making adjustments like you would if you missed a 3D or center of a target. Also making my homemade boss longer.
I have just one question on what was the plastic you used to fill the target.
Thanks again for sharing this
Greetings from the US. Great video and I plan on making this exact target. thank you
awesome mate! I live in Germany too. Saturday i am paying Toom a visit.
great DIY idea, thnks.
Brilliant Kev. I'm gonna have to make one of these just for the he'll of it.
i did one with the same idea but used a large reusable shopping bags its like tarp material stuff its works
Shade cloth is a good cover too, seems to hold up pretty well, the knitted variety is better than the woven. I use rags to stuff mine, but what you're doing looks just as good.
Nice vid, one of the better example of how to do it right. There's plenty of WOFTAMs on here.
When I first saw you with the plastic I was like mmm to soft but compared to clothes if it gets wet it's does rot and stink but if it's for indoor shooting it's perfect but not all of us have big property so the plastic makes sence for out door shooting weather wise , very nice my friend subbed
Instructions unclear, got in car, ended up in China.
Lol.
Really? Im still at the hardware store looking for buckets all the squeeky voice teels are sending me in the wrong direction.
I don't have gas in my car, so I am stuck.
Lewis! You should have dialled in : Nearest builders merchant in Woverhampton in your GPS, not Wuhan! ( and not Wolfsberg as this Gentleman did ! )
You can buy targets cheap in China so you should be okay.
Thank you SO much! I just made mine and it stops arrows better than the expensive stacked foam target I used to have 😁
This makes me very happy :-D
A bag of compressed rags that garages/ mechanics use works great.
Arrow stopping power is good 👍 The only downside is if it gets wet. The target gets VERY heavy and will start to smell after a while.
Great idea. Gonna pack mine with polystyrene from new tv. Cheers
Hi, not sure thats gonna stop an arrow tbh. Its too light and fragile in construction. Even if it stops a few it will fall apart very quickly.
Scrumpled up plastic is the way to go 👍
@@RobinhoodarrowsRHA They make and sell targets from it. Its the density that matters. I believe its referred to as packing foam. I'll mix it up a bit. Plastic as the first layer then polystyrene. I think it wil work fine for practice arrows. Thanks for replying.
Coole Idee, Thanks. Das werde ich auch Mal bauen. Danke Dir
Smart tip and good video mate
Outstanding ideas!! Thank you
Larger dog food/ feed sack that is like burlap with plastic threads. Thanks for the great ideas!
Thanks mate. Greta idea for me being in LatinAmerica. Been if we have the US near, comercial targets sold there are cheap but not the shipping. Will work on mine. Thanks.
What a good idea.... Im building one!
Thanks a lot for this Video. Made one myself after watching and it holds my arrows from a short distance of 3-4 yards easily. Great job!
my only concern is the angle of the arrows when penetrate ,
angles are random due to the material inside
you cannot see the parallelism of them ,
so in case of long range shooting , can it be an issue ? I mean : it can be nice to check the balistics of arrow in long distance
in case of layers of carpet , I guess the problem is solved ( but MUCH heavier target )
I cant say Ive ever had that problem
my first bow is coming tomorrow, i filled a baler with plastic and put a full wrap of shrink wrap round it from work, its in garden waiting to dry. Hopefully it does the trick :)
Let me know how it works out for you 👍
Fantastic idea new supporter and a big thumbs up 👍
Thanks, fast and easy and cheap. Great
Great targets ,thanks for the video
Plastic filling melts onto bolts on impact, iv layered close woven fabric, broken with layers of denim just remember to stuff jump up and down and stuff again, mine stops a 9mm round at 50 yards
Nice video, thanks. I'm definitely going to try this
Great target idea, thanks!
Excellent video and looks easy enough. Where does one pick up so much plastic to stuff the inside? Mike in sunny Florida
i have and extra garbage pale in the yard, I might cut it in half and do this. Easy to put a couple pieces of wood on each side to prevent it from rolling.
This video made me subscribe.. Excellent idea.. Thank you so much I will definitely be using this!
sehr gutes Video, super Anleitung. genau danach habe ich gesucht. vielen Dank :)
What a great idea! Thanks mate😊
Great video. Some good ideas and a very likeable guy. Keep it up.
Where did you get all the plastic? You didn't say... And would this stop a crossbow at point blank range?
Great video. Ive been looking at making my own target for honey shooting and this has given me a new idea! I wonder if a big plant pot would also work?
Those $5 party buckets with the rope handles would work too....
I wish I'd seen this a few days ago. I made a target for my 175lb crossbow and it was useless, the bolts went through like a knife through butter. I've spent this morning making another one. If that doesn't work I'll try this one as proper targets to handle a fairly powerful Xbow are very expensive.
Hi Keith, Ive used mine for xbows up to 150# but I cant see any reason why 175# isnt possible. Its all about how tight you can pack the bucket. Pack it tight enough and it WILL do the job :)
@@RobinhoodarrowsRHA I'll see how I get on today. I have basically packed a very large cardboard box full of carboard and newspapers and constructed a timber stop at the back, this will be covered this very afternoon in several layers of one of those builders' bag material.
If I had the cash I'd just buy one of the big and expensive target bags from Merlin Archery that look rather good.
If my solution doesn't work, despite lockdown B&Q are still open!
@@keithmasey664 Lots of tightly packed scrumpled up plastic is the answer
@@RobinhoodarrowsRHA An old job I had throws out tons of that stuff every week. I'll have to give them a call!
So will regular plastic grocery bags work for this? I think I have more than enough to at least make a smaller version of this target (like the size of the burlap sack)
Yep, they should work perfectly :) As long as the target is packed to the correct density just about any thin "sheet" plastic will work. The only one ive found to be a PITA is the freshwrap/clingfilm type stuff. Stops arrows well but just doesnt fuction in the target as well as the none sticky variety
darn it, you had me at the first step
LOVE THIS IDEA, looking forward to trying it
Robin Hood, good idea, thanks.
Great, Thank You very much for sharing!
Have you tried shooting broadheads in the target? If yes how easily can you remove them from the target? I don’t typically shoot broadheads at targets except to check/compare arrow trajectory vs field points taking it from practice to whitetail deer hunting.
It would stop a broadhead Im pretty sure but the target wouldnt last long
If you layer the bottom half of the bucket with cardboard...you won't need as many plastic bags to get it packed super tight....
