"This Sword, which is an equipment, which require creatures to equip to, is really held back in its capabilities by requiring a creature to equip it to." lol
Truth and Justice is pretty much mandatory in any infect deck in commander. The +1/+1 doesn't really matter that much, though it is nice. You really take it to add an extra poison counter on every opponent. Equip it on Atraxa and she's immune to getting hit by Swords to Plowshares (the single most common removal spell) and you can get two proliferation triggers out of her every turn.
Yeah, but that still makes it less generically good and requires a board state for a 5 drop to be worthwhile. Doesn't mean it's bad in the deck, but not the strongest
Maybe Top 10 Best/Worst Guild Mechanics? With three trips to Ravnica that makes for a total of 30 mechanics so there should be enough for one if not two lists.
Not sure why it's mentioned that you need a creature to equip the sword of x and y as a downside in ranking of 10 equipment that all require creatures...
The only thing Silver-bordered about Sword of Dungeons & Dragons these days is the fact it makes a gold-colored dragon. Personally, I’d Rule 0 it as a dragon that’s all colors.
Sword of Once and Future goes insane in my Zada commander deck. Pro B/U is really good and the combat trigger is a.) really easy to deliver if I have a trample enabler and b.) able to take amazing advantage of the vast majority of spells in that deck.
If there are more options suitable for the list but not able to make it, an honorable mentions would be pretty great to explain what went there and why
A niche but fun use for Hearth and Home is that you are able to blink target creature you OWN, rather than control. This means if one of your creatures has been stolen by an opponent, you can use this ability to return them to your control. Essentially "finding their way home".
When the Final Fantasy set comes out there is a 99.99% chance they'll make a Gilgamesh legendary creature who will make the perfect commander for such a deck.
There's already several good Commander options for a deck like that. Godo, Bandit Warlord: Ignore the near infinite with Helm of the Host which has a similar result as an after thought, and go grab Sword of Hearth and Home to start flickering Godo and grabbing more swords. Rafiq of the Many: Easy Double Strike to double up on triggers from swords, and access to white which has a lot of equipment synergy cards like Sigarda's Aid or search effects like Steelshaper's Gift. You also get access to additional combat control cards like Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist, so you don't need to worry about being overrun. Galea, Kindler of Hope: same colors as Rafiq, but instead of being inherently good at wielding swords, Galea can help you find them and attach them by playing them directly from the top of your library. Kellan, the Fae-Blooded: Comes with an equipment tutor, has Double Strike, and is in both colors that care about equipment. You get access to almost all the equipment tutors and things like Fighter Class to also help reduce the cost of equipping everything. And this is only a few of the great options available that directly care about equipment. For example, Diaochan, Artful Beauty is a silly option that really only cares about the Protection from Red swords so she can't blow herself up, but can help buy you time to get all the swords.
@lordjaraxxus5418 Actually, there is Sword of Wealth and Power. It came out in Outlaws of Thunder Junction. 3 mana, 2 equip, protection from instants and Sorceries. When equipped creature deals combat damage, copy the next spell played, and create a Treasure token.
The Sword of Once and Future is a sleeper. That thing has done so much more for me than I thought. It has allowed me to play easy tutors from my graveyard for free, whether it be a nature’s lore, farseek or just a good generic tutor, plus pro black and blue is really good
Sword of body and mind is also just good in any token army style deck, though I agree that it's bad against graveyard decks. However, I will say that unless your opponent has a resurrection based commander, the milling can still cause them to just lose the draws they needed for graveyard access, which is always fun
I have had some decent success with sort of hearth and home in Mono white Angels as well as ranar ever watchful. it helps in both decks a lot, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must have. You definitely something big with evasion which both decks have
It was revealed that an 11th sword would be coming out of Thunder Junction. Don’t remember the name, but instead of giving protection from 2 colors, it gives protection from instants and sorceries, and the usual +2/+2.
once and future is the only sword I own, and I was so hyped when I pulled it, except it's currently worth less than $2 and all the other swords are at $7-$40 :(
I assume this is a joke, but not everything is a cycle. To people who don't know, Pestilence/Pyrohemia is a colorshift. It's a card made for one color that also mechanically works in another color and gets a near identical card for that color. Some other examples include Wrath of God/Damnation, Elvish Spirit Guide/Simian Spirit Guide, and Serra Angel/Serra Sphinx.
Once and future is so underrated. The ability is just as strong, its just more build around. Its a colorless sunforger esc effect from you GY. Do I think it should make the top 5? probably not no, but its clearly slept on. Not as splashable with a clear build around requirement is what makes it low and unplayed.
I only disagree w/ the placements of Light & Shadow and of War & Peace. Despite W&P having one of the weaker triggers, I did actually run it in an old version of a Stoneforge deck bc its protection ability was against the most relevant removal colors in modern -- esp before the Fury ban. That said, Light & Shadow and Fire & Ice put more work in pretty much every time. Can't speak to its usefulness in legacy vs Miracles, tho.
You call Sword of Body and Mind the weakest of the original cycle, but it wasn't part of the original cycle. Darksteel only had two swords and Body and Mind wasn't one of them. It was Fire and Ice + Light and Shadow in Darksteel. Dunno when Body and Mind was added, I think maybe return to Mirrodin or something. I had temporarily stopped playing magic around then.
Body and Mind was in Scars of Mirrodin, Feast and Famine was Mirrodin Beseiged, and War and Peace was New Phyrexia. So those three were the “completion” of the OG set of the enemy pair swords in the SoM Block.
Feast and famine is stronger than fire and ice and you can't change my mind. On opponent with an empty hand and doubling your mana is absolutely insane.
I'm struggling with the fact that I kinda want to take all of the swords of x and y out of my Galea Kindler of Hope deck because they make colored equipment fall off
The protecrions arent "universally good" theres a stringent heriarchy first being colors with good creature removal then colors with good artifact removal being the order White=black> Red=green> Blue Swords with protections considered definitely changes the dynamic

Since you were ranking these based on the other formats, you should've used something like a walking Balista or hangerback walker. As those are much better mana sinks that see competitive play in Hardened Scales lists in Modern
I disagree with some of the list. 1. The colours the swords give protection from matter a lot. For example, pro red and black tend to be better than blue and green. 2. You treated mays as musts, which isn't great. Hearth and Home for example can just be ramp. 3. You over rated format availability. Sword of once and future is the worst sword is the worst sword in the cycle as you have to build around it to fully utilize the abilities. Yes you can potentially ramp but if you cant play the 2 cards you exile then you just loose those cards forever. Also maing it #9 for me. Also the best sword of the bunch is Feast and famine. Untapping your lands and making your opponent discard can just be very strong as you ether have you mana to do something precombat or have your mana up for your opponents turn. Forge and Frontier just requires casting post-combat instead. It's pretty easy to adjust to, and the only thing you have to do to utilize it to the fullest in deck construction is not put instants in the deck, while sticking to sorceries you always want to cast instead of only in niche cases. On average it'll pump out more card advantage than Fire and Ice, and its protection is more relevant due to green just being better to have protection from than blue.
