    I built this gate two years ago for a client in Oregon. I begged him to send me some quality pics of the Wood gate finished but all I got was a crappy iphone pic. Oh well the gate was still some of my best work.

    The filming is secondary to the work itself. The work speaks for itself and it is shouting out "I am a timeless wonder check me out."

      Kudos for the Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Rassiff Amazing Woodwork Blaster (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for woodworking plans without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan after many years got excellent success with it.

    Is that a .303 British Sporter rifle on the wall? The magazine and rear sight ramp looks very much like a converted Lee Enfield .303 British Mk1 Mod 4, circa WW2.

    I have no real design skills, so I won't be entering the contest, I'm just here to watch you build stuff. That said, while I certainly wouldn't complain about the prizes, I think some small item that you made, nothing too crazy, just a small carving or something like that would have been a better choice. You know, someone makes something for you, you make them something, that sort of thing. Anyway, just a thought I had while you were talking about the contest. Keep up with the good work, I'll keep watching.

  • @blacksheep_77
    @blacksheep_77 7 років тому +4

    No negativity here. This one reminds me why I watch your stuff. I haven't been on the bench in five years and I miss it. Watching your work is a good stand in.
    Anyone that complains that about a prize is...stupid. Being a part of something bigger than myself is prize enough. Helping someone in need is prize enough. Just being given an opportunity to offer something is prize enough.
    Can't wait to see that box of chisels open up again. Love that shot by the way. Especially the pause before you opened it. Perfect.

    The Samurai Carpenter, About the logo thing, I think what you're trying to say is that IF graphic design artists would like to contribute to the success of your channel in an graphic design fashion, they can submit a logo design for a contest.
    I think the problem is that so many of these artists have to stand their ground every day in order to get paid. They get so many requests for "free work" or "work for publicity" type jobs, that even though your request is pretty innocent, it sounds so much like all the assholes who constantly demean their work with similar requests.
    I still think you should pick an artist, commission a logo and pay them appropriately; just because you're kind of a starving artist doesn't mean they're not in the exact same boat. You wouldn't have build Alec Steele his chest if he had promised to compensate you only in publicity, just saying.

    • @Leib33
      @Leib33 7 років тому

      I hear what you're saying and they are valid points, however there are starving graphic artists who would LOVE to get free publicity of any kind. Not only that, but there are artists of the quality of Samurai Carpenter and Alec Steele, who are even willing to show their appreciation without recompense, well, just because. Also don't discount the already successful non-starving graphic artists who'd be more than happy to contribute their time to help our Samurai who, as anyone who has watched all or most of his videos know, that he has a good sized family to feed and extra costs beyond most regular families due to his son's special needs. Also, if you could imagine the time, cost and energy they put into the items they exchanged, I don't think there would be anywhere near the investment of ANY graphic artist big or starving to whip up a logo for him. We're talking about a fairly simple LOGO not asking anyone to produce the next Mona Lisa!

    • @chrisis9030
      @chrisis9030 7 років тому +1

      + Ethan Ah, so it's the same across the Big Pond? You are absolutely right. People seem to think our work should be free for some reason. I'm SO tired of that sh*t :-(...

    • @Approx_99
      @Approx_99 7 років тому

      Thank you Chris. It totally is, and you hear about it from artists all the time. People forget that graphic designers are artisans in their own right, just like carpenters or blacksmiths. It may take them a few hours to whip up a design, but they trained and practiced for years to be able to ONLY spend a few hours whip (not to mention $1000s in supplies, software and hardware)

    • @chrisis9030
      @chrisis9030 7 років тому +3

      + Ethan It's not just that, Ethan. I gave up portait drawing for the same reason. People think it's all fun, just because the results are so beautiful. And it CAN be, but it doesn't come easy, at least not always. And it does take lots of time, dedication and energy.
      I for one wouldn't expect Jesse to build me a gate for free just because I can see he loves his art.

    Hey Samurai, why not make something small for a prize next time? Or maybe a jalanese saw or chisel that you use? You could even make a tiny trophy, video the process and show us all how you did it. Even if it is not that expensive or grand it still would be awesome to own something made by you.

  • @RobertGallop
    @RobertGallop 7 років тому +5

    That was awesome, I have to say after seeing that.... before I die, I MUST own a piece of samurai wood art. I would cherish a live edge table or something, but as it is now, I have nothing I can pass on to my kids that I would value as highly. Amazing, amazing, amazing work! I will own a piece someday, somehow, it WILL happen. In the mean time, I feel inspired to start making my own, and hope that one day I get to a level of 1/100th your skill... so many trees are going to hate me before I reach that level, but maybe if I keep at it for 10 years or so, I could make a simple key holding rack that the samurai would approve of? Maybe....

    Hey Samurai, I'm in Portland. I'll go photograph the gate. Just tell me where it is and I'll send you the pics. I know how it is to have a piece of important work that I didn't get decent pics of and its too far away to make them myself. To hire a local photographer to take the pictures will eat up the entire profit and more so that will never happen. The community has spoken. Max

    I really don't get how people can be so ungrateful (ungateful?), as you mention in the end, and also in a lot of your other videos.. I'm sitting here in Denmark, looking at gorgeous woodwork from around the world almost every day, and that is what inspires me, to pursue some of the same skills. Woodworking here in Denmark tends to revolve more around the money and not about doing things out of passion.
    Jessie, you do your thing, and don't let those guys get you down. This is just an amazing gate, and I'm sure, in time, that you'll get to build more gates and make even more videos. I usually don't read a lot of comments, but it really bums me out that people can be so impatient and rude, that you (and others) have to defend yourself so often. Get some perspective, 21st century self-centred, unsatisfied "small" people!
    I'm short on money right now, but when I get a more stable income, or learn to spend the money I have more carefully, I'll support you on Patreon for sure. Heck, if I had the money, I'd fly overseas and pay you to let me sit in the corner and just observe 😅
    Enjoy the summer, woodworkers! /Kasper

    Ya know Mr. Samurai the gate was beautiful, absolutely! the footage, I liked it. your skill as a craftsman no, an artist is undeniable. But that dance party? you wanna talk about commitment to a craft? honoring ones responsibilities as a father, well that's "kung fu" in it's purest form. no doubt your child will have many memories of sharing time with you in your craft, but brother, times like that "dance party" go to the core of what motivates an artist to become what they are. you keep doin' that and you'll give your children a precious gift. Yeah, yer a good woodworker, but from where i sit, yer a good father too.

I don't put so much hope in the home owners for references. or pictures. and only one send me like 8000 pictures from the projects. like references. but no phone calls. everything home owners want is you finish the project and get out from the house. only if they need you to fix anything they will call you back. no everyone is like that. but sadly a big %.

    Wow, built the guy a beautiful gate and he couldn't bother to send you some photos for two years? What an ass! Then he sends a single crappy photo just to "get you off his back"? What a douche. I think I'd have to stalk him and when he got back from vacation his gate will have been repo'd with a check in it's place for what he paid me. What an ingrate!

    Nice job with the Oregon pronunciation! Not surprised your client couldn't get a good pic, weather back home is always crap! Never a sunny day for long

    Your tools are really sharp, I can tell because I used to work as a sushi chef and I know a little about sharpening my knives. Those chisels are japanese right? it might have that feeling of a japanese sword in them. God bless you.

    You can use this for t-shirt design. But use your famous vest. Put an out line of it on a black shirt and put The Samurai Carpenter above the chest clasps. If you do use it I would just like a shirt of it in a 3x.

    Great to see you are back both doing and showing what you are awesome at, not that you're less than impressive at all the rest that you show us. Pity about your client in this case.......too busy, or just doesn't want to give you the credit for the very impressive skill you have. Such a shame there are guys like this in the world. (hope you got well paid!)

    I have been watching your videos now for nearly 1 year and you have make some beautiful things, but that gate is fantastic. If you make anything as good as that again you will video it better and your following will shoot up dramatically.
