thank you guys so much for livestreaming your thoughts on these books. it's clear that your thoughts obviously come from a sincere place of wanting the books to be better. there are also smaller communities on twitter and tumblr where people talk about their criticisms with these books, I should add, and they all line up with the things that you have discussed. For me, I love these books more than I dislike them, which is why I get *so* disappointed when it has these major problems and blindspots that you talked about. I remember being deeply impacted by Kaladin's arc in the first book to the point that he skyrocketed to becoming one of my favorite characters in literature. But seeing him and other characters in his position or worse just not get a chance from the narrative to be themselves or truly express their beliefs has been so disappointing. I can't look past the mistreatment of oppressed characters and the poor representation of their beliefs and politics. I can't look past the books' tendency to defang the violence of the oppressive characters the narrative so clearly favors. It sucks to be let down! And it's not fun being in a position where you're looking at something that could have been even greater than it is, but is limited by its blindspots. That said, y'all are great. And I hope Sanderson will learn from the flaws in this first arc and his previous works and continue to improve his work in a meaningful way.
Thank you so much for joining us during the live! It really helps having people of varying opinions and levels of fandom have conversations on how we want the series to improve. It feels like our reviews (after close to a year haha) are finally reaching the intended audiences. Kaladin could be such an amazing character and I remember how special he was (and even Dalinar!) We so special to me at one point. I hope kaladin and moash get the arc they deserve 🤞
Y'all talk about how many pages these books are, but I have a confession. I've never read any of them. But I've listened to all of them on audiobook multiple times. I find audiobooks are easier because of multitasking ADHD superpowers. Wind and Truth will be a lot of fun to listen to while on Holiday Travels. Again I super appreciate the perspectives expressed in this livestream, it does give me a lot to consider in this story. Since the upcoming RPG allows playing as a Singer, maybe even a Fused, maybe even as Moash, it would be a lot of fun to watch this panel play out the plot with the legitimate criticisms mentioned here brought to the forefront. After you finish your review of the 5th book in February, will you make some type of summary video? I'd love to see a video which could be shared with Brandon, or members of Dragonsteel, by fans such as myself which summarizes your core criticisms of the themes Brandon seemed to be trying to represent, and how he could do better in the future. From my read of the guy, he seems deeply interested in accurately representing perspectives of marginalized groups. Even though he can't rewrite these books, he can consider how to better portray these themes in the inevitable Stormlight TV Series.
Hey 👋🏻! Haha I agree, audio books are amazing especially in assisting with adhd ( i plan on making a video about this cause same. I also love thinking about it as a superpower 💓). we have talked about playing the games and discussing adaptations with our critical lense. Honestly though I would need to figure out a way to do it without spending money because I don't want to financially endorse something I have so many qualms with. We do plan on making one final video after book 5 where we summarize all of our thoughts and reflect on the series development as a whole. I feel like reviews are for reviewers and while listening to fans may have it's benefits I am concerned with the amount of pandering to the audience he does because the quality doesn't follow suit in my opinion, which is also Evident to me in his responses at panels. I do think he has good intentions, for me intentions need to be followed by actions to garner trust. The final summary video will be on Sarah's channel if you want to catch that! Thanks for hanging out with us!
