Again, another video showcasing the excellence this medium can offer. Your work consistently fits this category. And sad, the tragic ending of a man by gun violence.
Pity Monk didn't get to enjoy the recognition he deserved while he was alive. Great work and thanks for making this video so the rest of us can appreciate Monk's work
Your presentation reminds us that we must join our subjects to get full entry into their world. Once inside, a whole new world opens up. Thank you for your careful look into Monk's work.
First class photo's and completely genuine. Totally different from Diane Arbus' voyeurism and also totally unlike some modern working class photographers that just photograph miserable faces and unwashed dishes and call it 'social commentary' whilst lazily feeding a middle class trope. Excellent, what a life story. That would make a great film, but nobody would believe it.
In the 70's in my city (Cordoba, Argentina) these kinds of places appeared, I understand that they had their own characteristics and others very similar to those we see in Monk's photos. Marginalization, poverty, persecution, prejudices, military governments and an immense social need to break with taboos, desire cannot be repressed to such extremes of cruelty without institutions that fight to impose themselves. All this drags sad and painful stories, here and there. At least in Cape Town there was a rebel who was able to leave these magnificent records, in the case of my city nobody bothered to bear witness and today those who remember are fewer and fewer... death, oblivion and the explicit will to deny realities that, even in the present, are unresolved and therefore, very uncomfortable.
Feels like when I was 17 and discovered John Peel's music on BFBS in Germany❤. Your channel is so different. Anders Petersen's work, the pictures he took in Hamburg in the “Café Lehmitz“ share the same relation with the people he took pictures of as the ones of Billy Monk. Never heard of him before. Thank you❤
You continue my education in and well outside the confines of photography despite my attempts in later life to step outside professional confines. Superb photographs, quite exceptional I think.
Good morning from Canada! 🍁 Or should I say good night (it’s 3:33am) What a delightful video! Thanks, Mr. Williams! Loved these Billy Monk’s bw photographs ❤️
Finally a channel that features Photographers that are relatable to those of us who just like taking photos. Thank you ...
I love those 60's B/W shots.
And showing the life in South Africa in that era is rare.
Excellent video 🎉
Thanks for sharing.

Brilliantly constructed account. Thank you, Graeme.
Thank you so much for the excellent presentation ❤

Hey Dirk That is very kind of you, thanks.

Me too!
A new photographer for me, thanks!
The observation on Arbus makes complete sense. Her series on mentally disabled people in a hospital illustrate your point.
