Camera Lucida - A personal journey into the medium of photography
THIS VIDEO:
What’s most important to understand when reading Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida, is that writing of the book was a part of his grieving process. He started the working on it in 1977 - the same year that his mother died - these two things can’t be separated. He explores the link between grief, death and photography - He was aware that every photograph depicts someone who will eventually pass away…and that every moment that’s been captured has also passed. Every photograph becomes a micro-death and therefore a tragedy. He also died three years later when he was knocked down by a laundry van. Found family photographs are significance in this text so I’ll run some images that I find particularly relevant.

I thought that it might also be interesting to add in a Photobooks section, this time. The news this year, has been particularly lively - with the continuing war in Ukraine, the Israel conflict, the US election, the US border crises, hurricanes,...
Gesture - Conveying an emotion
Переглядів 2,3 тис.21 день тому
THIS VIDEO: The word gesture is thrown about in photographic discussions, but what does it actually mean. The definition refers to an action that conveys a feeling. But for this discussion, I’m going to extend its meaning to include any visual element or group of elements that sparks an emotional response. So, this could be a physical act, a movement or a bend in a tree branch. For me something...

Gregory Crewdson - photographs from his inner world

As much as he tries to push away from this core sensibility, he finds hims...

Thanks very much for this - a really good summary. I've always found Barthes' book to be profound, even if I'm never quite sure that he captures what it is about photos - I don't feel convinced that every photo is a memento mori. I do think that he's aiming for understanding in a way which Susan Sontag's book doesn't. She seems to be thinking superficially, to me.

Mmmm ... I'llget round to reading it. All in the intepretation of the viewer and the snapshot aesthetic. Some great wee photo's though ... but as for each photo is a 'little death', thats just pretentious and meaningless drivel.

I don't know if you are aware that in the UK you can find 'lost family photos' printed on postcards. As people often on holiday had personal postcards made. The local business photographer printed them directly onto postcard blanks within hours of them been taken.

Makes me think about what disappears when someone's memories are cancelled, burned or destroyed, without those memories we didn't exist. We kind of disappear. You experienced apartheid yourself, where people were erased from this world for no reason, apartheid is happening now in many places and memories are buried forever with someone's life, life experiences and emotions. It is scary how important these documents are

Brilliant, Graeme. Far and away the best video treatment of the book on the internet. (There are loads of really atrociously bad ones.) You might have mentioned that the book is short, illustrated and very readable.

Counciousness is a mystery. My brain is hidden in darkness in my skull, but still create the experience of being. Photography is a mystery. Fixating a glimpse of a moment long gone. Every photographic image is a mystery. We all have our own unique experience when viewing images - the experience of viewing the image is a unique and personal moment.

Barthes grieving confession is a siginficant view of the medium's status, deeply personal and an aspect in which we all can swim at times. I can't be sure but I think he might have been aware of Walter Benjamin's article 'A small history of photography' from 1931 which is equally perceptive but in a different direction and less personal. Not sure of the chronology here.

I enjoyed hearing how this groundbreaking photographer came from a family of wealth and could create exactly as he pleased with absolutely no concerns for socialist New York Art critics and their stilted and shortsighted judgements. In the old days artists and composers had “patrons.” This was long before the bureaucrats in the NEA got into the act. Guess it just goes to show Capitalism has its finer moments.
