This was just a bunch of friends hanging out trying to make each-other laugh, and I am so here for it. This episode felt so good. It almost had a last minute feel to it, but in a really good way.
I LOVED this episode!! More writers, including Michelle, Sam, and Skyler, on the show, please!! The flow is phenomenal!! (And you KNOW how much I love alliteration!!)
Before the word comedian existed, in ancient Rome, comedians were called truthsayers. They would stand on pedestals speaking truth against the regime with absurdity in order to soften the effects of reality while also creating space for the conversation to be had about the thing they are speaking truth to. Comedy is THEE most important check against power. Comedy makes power look foolish and if that power can not stand criticism then that power is not for the people but a minority. And the people of history have never allowed this power to last very long. Things must get worse before they can get better because the people that won the vote are convinced that things can't get worse for them. They refuse to listen that it can so they must be shown. The wheel keeps spinning and the pendulum will always swing back to the other side. The balance of the climate has been disrupted and nature will always find a way back to balance. The same is true of all life and societies. Comedians are a part of the natural order of a civilization. We find relief and strength in levity. We love you, Taylor.
Totally on a different tangent here, thinking about the future evolution of After Midnight versus past efforts... There was once a game show called The Match Game which featured Gene Rayburn in the proverbial catbird seat that Taylor Tomlinson currently presides. If we were to add three seats to the panelist's side of the stage, and then place two contestants to Taylor's right, we'd have Match Game. Three of those six panelists would be "regulars" like writers from the show, and then the other three would be a revolving cast of fresh meat. The two contestants could just be random folks picked from the audience. You grok me? The future of After Midnight could easily evolve into a 21st century equivalent of Match Game, but much better.
I always loved old clips of Match Game. They have brought the show back here and there to moderate success. I think After Midnight (and @midnight) definitely captured some of the spirit of Match Game with a loose quiz/game show structure and then so much room for shenanigans.
Anyone else see this pop up in their feed with the timestamp perfectly obstructing the title to say "Using the Power of Come to Heal a Divided America"?
7:33 Michelle Sam & Skyler are astute, but I disagree w/the presumption Mark Twain or William Shakespeare were the first stand up comedians. We have no evidence because modern cameras could never capture these moments, but we CAN surmise that people like Twain & The Bard would have improvised humor over whiskey & tobacco at pubs. Before them? Court Jesters, wandering minstrels, & troubadours for the masses. Even perhaps before Greco-Roman times one can safely presume there have always been kings & emperors fighting over property and power, but there have always also been critics who bring laughter and talent to the table. To quote from The Bible, John 1:5. the light shines in the darkness & the darkness will never put out the light.
BTW I'm an atheist, and an ex-Southern Baptist, but I still quote John 1:5 every chance I get. Laughter is light. Laughter is the first, last, and best weapon against darkness and blood-thirsty evil. "We will not go quietly into the night. Rage against" anything that dares to harm "the light." Apologies to Dylan Thomas for my taking liberties. "Death shall have no dominion."
I appreciate your insightful comment for its merits and wisdom. I would respectfully suggest that it was part of the improvised joke to pick a figure who would be familiar to everyone as a humorist, recognizable to the audience, and is from a pretty old time. That’s why Shakespeare and Mark Twain came up, because most everyone in the US knows who they are. There probably were “comic” types even before recorded history, but it’s not as snappy in a joke as those two. But still, I want to add this isn’t really intended as criticism. The power of comedy is one of the guiding lights in human history.
Am I the only one that clicked because we can only see, "THE HEALING POWER OF COME" because of the time. I thought this was a different kind of video where Taylor learns how to.... "Heal herself" finally and she stops being so sardonic and filled with hate.
So, but like, what WAS the deal with bubonic plague? Like… for real, for real. … Just like. No. Ew. Also. Yuck to today as well. We need heroes like these folks right here. Veni, vidi, vici. But like, conjugated to they. They come, they see, they conquer/slay all day with laughter.
Wait, Sam's gay? So you're saying I have the opportunity to sleep my way onto the show instead of being funny? Thank God. Everyone that nobody has more power than comedy writers
I wouldn’t say we are divided. Some were deluded by politicians, media, and celebrities. Once you set aside your delusions and accept reality, you can begin to recover. Start with the premise that all three lie for a living.
Sam is correct. The predominant difference between comedies and tragedies is death. Don't get me started on "histories." I can't prove this but in my college days I spent a good deal of time mulling over the works of Shakespeare. I rather imagine The Bard knew his way around a library and read the words of The Greeks. Did the Greeks do better than Shakespeare? Did he learn from Aristophanes Thepsis and his other predecessors? Have we learned from them? Why fry over minutiae? Tragedy is dark. Comedy is light. The Histories are.. oh, don't get me started.
@@ZachsMindhomie called the tragedies “dramas” while correcting someone else for forgetting about the Histories You completely missed the irony/ point of nitpicking the mistakes of someone nitpicking someone else’s mistakes to illustrate how pedantic they’re being (PS. What makes something a tragedy is a sympathetic lead with a major moral flaw that ends up destroying them or the people they care about. The point is to show why you shouldn’t do certain things. While common in the genre, death isn’t a defining feature)

This is the episode I needed. Just family laughing together.
I think having the writers on is a brilliant idea!
Question: how do we know these three are actual writers?

Absolutely here for starting with 420 points great work

Even the outfits are chill in this episode, amazing!

Enjoying the writers as participants :)
“In high-nsight”
Skyler saying “speak on it” for EVERYTHING michelle says is so good
ok I love them. this should be regular thing if it's not already?
When the world has gone mad, you might as well laugh maniacally at it.
love how this lineup was able to do a bit together

The 420 points right as I’m about to smoke some weed sent me
This is great.
6:43 That was my mom's very first thought.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What about clowns though?😁
My favorite part of this segment was when the camera panned out and the swan was still spinning pretty!
this is so good
I'm glad you all started at 420 points to remind me that I need toxge high for this ( the election, not the show - this show is hilarious ) 😂

In fairness to Mark Twain, he died in 1910 and we've put a ton of money into R&D since then
In the surfing clip, WHAT IS IN HIS MOUTH??
During the plague? You mean Jerry Seinfeld didn't invent observational comedy?

"they look to comedians for answers" yeah because this country is a joke, and comedians are the only ones who can fix that lol

Shakespeare broke his plays into dramas, comedies, and histories. You're thinking of the Greeks.
Tragedies, Comedies, and Histories. If you’re gonna correct someone maybe do a google first?
